LA begins CCL fresh, Chorrillo restarts
The LA Galaxy will have a few things going for them when they open their CONCACAF Champions League campaign Thursday night against Isidro Metapan.
They will be at home in The Home Depot Center -- and they´ve had a weekend off.
"It was good. We had a lot of weekend, weekday games for quite a while so it was good to get a couple of days off and clear our minds heading into another physical challenge in these next four games," defender A.J. DeLaGarza told MLSsoccer.com.
"It´s another big stretch. Obviously CONCACAF is huge and for our first two games to be here, they´re must win games."
Los Angeles, which reached last season´s Champions League quarterfinals in March, is in fourth place in Major League Soccer´s Western Conference and played the Columbus Crew to a 1-1 draw in their last game on August 15.
Metapan already has three points, having beaten the Puerto Rico Islanders 3-1 on three goals by Nicolas Munoz on August 1 at Estadio Jorge Calero Suarez.
Including the Champions League win, Metapan has lost only one of seven matches this season, including Saturday´s 1-1 draw with Juventud Independiente in the Salvadoran Apertura.
However, the loss was costly with goalkeeper Henry Hernandez suffering a fractured tibia, an injury that is expected to sideline him for approximately four months.
Also on Thursday, Chorrillo will look to rebound from a 5-0 loss to Monterrey in its Group Stage opener on July 31 when the Panamanian side hosts Municipal at Estadio Rommel Fernandez.
Chorrillo has won three straight games in the Panamanian Apertura, including a 3-1 victory against Alianza FC on Saturday.
"It is a very difficult game, very difficult," Chorrillo coach Miguel Mansilla told RPC Radio. "Municipal is one of the best teams in [Central] America. They´re going to try to win and we will do the same at home."
The match will serve as a homecoming for Municipal´s Panamanian goalkeeper Jaime Penedo. But Mansilla is more concerned about gaining three points.
"It´s an attraction to have Jaime Penedo come to play in Panama," he said. "We respect Penedo, but he is defending Guatemala and we are defending Panama and will trying and score goals on him."
Municipal will travel to Panama with nearly a full squad, missing only Honduran striker Oscar Isaula, who injured his right knee in training. The team includes the dangerous striking duo of Brazilian Leandro Barrios and Guatemalan Juan Valenzuela, two of the top scorers in the Guatemalan Apertura this season.
Municipal is unbeaten in its last six matches, including a 1-0 victory over Malacateco Saturday for its third straight win that moved it into second place in the Apertura, one point behind Comunicaciones.
