Perú: Farfán, máximo goleador histórico

LIMA -- El delantero peruano Jefferson Farfán se convirtió en el máximo goleador histórico de Perú en fases de clasificación mundialistas gracias a los dos tantos que marcó el viernes en la victoria por 2-1 frente a Venezuela.

Farfán alcanzó, de esa manera, diez anotaciones en procesos premundialistas, con lo que superó los nueve que tiene el centrocampista ya retirado Roberto Chorrillano Palacios.

El atacante del Schalke 04 alemán inauguró su producción goleadora con Perú en estos torneos en 2003, durante la victoria de 4-1 sobre Paraguay, y logró otro en 2004, en la derrota 1-3 sufrida ante Uruguay.

Ese mismo año, conquistó un gol en el 1-2 frente a Chile y en 2005 anotó contra Ecuador (2-2), Venezuela (1-4) y Bolivia (4-1), en este último en dos ocasiones.

En las actuales eliminatorias, Farfán consiguió un gol en el 2-4 frente a Chile y los dos en el 2-1 del viernes frente a Venezuela.

Farfán manifestó su alegría por sus goles, pero remarcó que Perú deberá ratificar que mantiene vivas sus opciones mundialistas para Brasil 2014 con un triunfo frente a Argentina, en el partido que jugarán el próximo martes en el Estadio Nacional de Lima.

Santiago de Chile, 8 de septiembre de 2012.- El técnico de Chile, Claudio Borghi, afirmó que ante Uruguay "ha sido el mejor partido que le he visto a Colombia en el último tiempo", en alusión a la goleada por 4-0 en el partido jugado este viernes en Barranquilla en las eliminatorias sudamericanas del Mundial de Brasil 2014.

"Mostraron una formación netamente ofensiva y la inclusión de Teófilo Gutiérrez y Macnelly Torres le dio a Colombia más poder en ofensiva", destacó el estratega de origen argentino.

"Pero no creo que jueguen igual el martes, porque el partido va a ser más rápido", anticipó Borghi, día en que el representativo chileno deberá enfrentarse al colombiano en el Estadio Monumental de Santiago.

De cara a este partido, el adiestrador argentino confirmó los once titulares donde Arturo Vidal será líbero junto a los defensores Gonzalo Jara y Marcos González.

Borghi dejó en claro que conversó con el hombre de la Juventus y que la discusión sobre dónde debería jugar ya quedó atrás.

"Lo conocemos desde chico y ha jugado en todos los puestos. En este caso yo quiero y le pedí que jugara de último hombre. Con esto se acaba la discusión", afirmó.

La alineación ante Colombia está conformada por Claudio Bravo; Marco González, Arturo Vidal y Gonzalo Jara; Mauricio Isla, Gary Medel, Marcelo Díaz, Eugenio Mena y Matías Fernández; Humberto Suazo y Alexis Sánchez.

Por otro lado, Borghi valoró la posición en que se encuentra Chile disputadas siete jornadas, aunque cree que "lo importante son los próximos tres partidos y dentro de esos son dos de local. No son partidos fáciles, pero manteniendo la posibilidad de ganar en casa tenemos una gran oportunidad de llegar al Mundial".

Burrell hails Whitmore

President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Captain Horace Burrell has described the Reggae Boyz history-making head coach, Theodore ´Tappa´ Whitmore, as a very unique person.

Whitmore helped create history on Friday when he guided the Reggae Boyz to their first ever victory over the United States (US) at the senior level at the National Stadium. Whitmore, who has been at the helm since 2008, is now unbeaten in six World Cup qualifiers.

"Theodore is a special person," said Burrell. "He played professional football, he went to the World Cup and scored two goals, he understands football at the highest level, and I am not sure that many of our other local coaches have had the opportunity and the privilege to play football professionally."

In congratulating Whitmore and the entire coaching staff, Burrell, who watched the national team come from behind to snatch the historic win, said he was always confident that the Boyz would have rallied to win after the first-minute lead by the Americans.

Rodolph Austin and Luton Shelton struck home free kicks in each half to hand Jamaica´s Reggae Boyz a 2-1 win after Clint Dempsey had stunned the home fans.

"Coming from behind and then to win the game in the way we did certainly gives us a a great feeling, and this is certainly something that we will not forget," Burrell said shortly after the game on Friday night.

Jamaica are now sole leaders of CONCACAF World Cup semi-final round Group A on seven points. The US have dropped to second on four points where they are joined by Guatemala. The Guatemalans defeated Antigua and Barbuda 3-1 on Friday.

´Stop killing the team´

They call him ´The Beast´ at his new English Championship club Leeds United and Jamaican midfielder Rodolph Austin showed why, with a bossy performance in Friday´s historic 2-1 victory over the US in their FIFA World Cup qualifier inside the National Stadium.

Never smiling and with expressions that mirrored a man charged with a huge undertaking, Austin ran from penalty box to penalty box; from touchline to touchline, as he strung passes all across the stadium turf, sent US bodies flying, and had US goalkeeper Tim Howard in misery for the entire 90 minutes with a barrage of long-range shots.

It was Austin´s fierce 25-yard free kick that gave the hosts parity in the 23rd minute after Clint Dempsey had stunned the capacity stadium crowd with a 35-second goal. Reggae Boyz captain Luton Shelton secured the historic feat with another free kick, after a lengthy negotiation with specialist Austin, who reluctantly stepped aside and watched as the skipper lodged his first ever free kick for Jamaica in the right-hand corner of the US goal in the 64th minute.

In truth, Dempsey´s goal seemed to have shot new life into the Jamaicans and particularly Austin, who became a new monster afterwards, charging his teammates with encouragement and taking the game by the scruff of the neck in a performance that will rank as one of his best ever in the Jamaican colours.

not getting carried away

Not a man of many words and still very humble, Austin focused all praise on his teammates and called for more support for the team.

"To God be the glory, the team is working hard and we are doing well. We stick together and we are a part of history now, but we are not going to get carried away," Austin told The Sunday Gleaner minutes after walking off the field.

"We showed heart and we, as Jamaicans, we are breaking a lot of barriers now and it´s just for the public to stop killing the team and get behind us, because we are a strong nation and a strong team." He added. "There are a lot of negative people, but they need to get behind the team and stop come on the TV and hide behind a camera and talk."

"I am playing with a lot of confidence especially when I am shooting, and I am just enjoying life, enjoying playing the game, and this was a nice win for the people to celebrate," Austin pointed out before touching a bit on his own play and approach.

"I just keep my emotions the same way, I don´t get carried away; win, lose or draw, it´s just for the fans to celebrate and my friends and family," he said. "I work hard for everything in life and I am just enjoying it and making my family and the nation proud."

If Jamaica is to qualify to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, then Austin will have to show his beastly side a few more times.
