Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”

Flamengo near record-breaking Adidas kit deal

Flamengo could have a new shirt sponsor for next season’s Brasileirão should they agree a ten-year contract with Adidas, worth up to R$ 465 million (£143m).

Olympikus, who currently sponsor Flamengo, are concerned about their sales and want R$ 35 million (£11m) compensation for early termination of their contract, which expires at the end of 2014.

The brand also wants to recoup a portion of their R$ 10.4 million (£3m) investment in building the Museum of Flamengo, which has been suspended due to the dispute.

Within the club there are divisions as to whether the Flamengo board should accept Adidas’ offer or stay with current suppliers Olympikus, mainly due to the contract length.

Leonardo Ribeiro, President of the board, said: “What we want is a readjustment of the values after a five-year contract. I said I could not vote if it was a contract of adhesion.”

Flamengo did have 100 days to make a decision but negotiations have taken longer due to the club’s current deal with Olympikus, who pay part of Vagner Love’s salary.

Should the Rubro-Negro reject the offer, Adidas will be taking the proposal to other European clubs, which includes a number of bonuses for title wins.

São Paulo make initial moves for 2013 targets

São Paulo have already set about making initial progress in the recruitment of players for the 2013 season, according to numerous reports in Brazil.

It is believed that topping the list of targets currently is Figueirense striker Aloisio, 24, scorer of nine Série A goals for the relegation-bound Santa Catarina side.

Lancenet report that conversations have already taken place with the out-of-contract player´s agent, Eduardo Uram - who already manages the likes of Maicon, Cortez and Cicero at the Morumbi.

Elsewhere, the club have been looking at the Série B market for talent. ASA striker Lúcio Maranhão, 24, has scored 37 goals this year to attract attention, whilst the club´s midfielder Valdivia, 19, is also under observation. Lucca, 22, a forward at second placed Criciuma is another player linked.

São Paulo have, of course, already secured the signing of Paulo Henrique Ganso, who is considered unlikely to play ahead of the 2013 season, but will lose Lucas Moura to Paris St-Germain. Out-of-contract Willian José is another likely to leave the club.

The Paulista outfit are intent on refurnishing their options for the new season, including a revamp of their youth teams. The club have already agreed a deal for the Desportivo Brasil quartet of Gladestony, Diego Carlos, Daniel Chula and the highly-rated Lucas Evangelista ahead of the 2013 Copa São Paulo de Futebol Junior.

Flamengo new-boy Renato Santos could debut against Corinthians

Renato Santos could make his debut for Flamengo on Wednesday when his new club travels to Corinthians.

The 25-year-old defender moved from Avaí to the Rubro-Negro last month, along with teammate Cléber Santana, following some impressive performances in Série B.

However, Renato Santos arrived with a left thigh problem and has been working on his recovery up until last week.

He said: "I´m physically 90% ready, and it is still taking a little more rhythm to reach 100%.

"That only comes with games because in training you can train as it is, but the game pace is different."

Flamengo coach Dorival Júnior may have to select the defender due to the absence of Chilean centre-back Marcos González.

Renato Santos added: "I´ve been preparing for this very day [debut] since my treatment and my recovery.

"I can be available to Dorival for the game with Corinthians.

"If he needs me, I´ll give my best."

Flamengo visit the Estádio do Pacaembu on Wednesday in the 29th round of the Brasileirão, with the game kicking off at 02:00 BST.

Giuliano: My team-mates all want Neymar´s shirt

Dnipro midfielder Giuliano has revealed that his team-mate´s were all delighted with his selection for the upcoming Brazil fixtures, as it gave them an opportunity to get a shirt from Neymar.

Giuliano, 22, made his debut in 2010 but had dropped out of the national team picture since his move to the Ukraine, during which time Neymar´s global status has rocketed.

Now, as the player himself has discovered, the mohicaned Santos star is a big draw wherever he goes - including in the Ukraine.

"My team-mates came and said: ´When you go to the Seleção bring me a shirt from Neymar´," Giuliano told Globo Esporte.

"I told them to get in line. It will be difficult, but I will try to get his shirt. Only, if I get one it will be for me - not for them!

"They always ask about Neymar. He is a great player, better than most and recognised worldwide. As well as that, he is also a great person."

Chelsea defender David Luiz: Kaká should have been called-up before

Chelsea defender David Luiz has told reporters of his delight at the return of Kaká to the Brazil squad for the side´s upcoming friendly fixtures.

Kaká, 30, will return to the Seleção for the first time under manager Mano Menezes and the first time since the 2010 World Cup.

Luiz insists that, in his opinion, the former World Player of the Year (2007) should have been called up to the squad earlier:

"We were all delighted with the news," David Luiz said on arrival in Poland. "He should have been called-up earlier, he was the best player in the world."

Brazil will travel to Sweden for a fixture with Zico-managed Iraq on Thursday evening, before returning to Wroclaw in Poland to play Japan on Tuesday next week.

Chelsea defender David Luiz is expected to start alongside captain Thiago Silva at the heart of the defence, as Mano Menezes looks to build a team for next summer´s Confederations Cup.
