Santos coach Muricy Ramalho believes Brazilian football calendar should be like Europe´s

Santos coach Muricy Ramalho has suggested that the Brazilian football calendar should follow the same system as in Europe, to reduce the number of players missing domestic football for international games.

The Piexe boss has previously revealed his frustrations at Neymar missing numerous Brasileirão fixtures due to commitments with the Seleção.

The Chelsea and Barcelona target has only made 12 appearances this season, out of a possible 32, and is just one of the many Brazilian players in the same situation.

Ramalho believes a system like Europe´s, which has international breaks, would be much better.

He said: "We see Europe as having no qualifiers, no championship, and I think it should be like there because it harms no one.

"Sometimes they only play once a week.

"We have to make a study of it [the calendar] and give it an improvement for sure."

The Santos coach, whose side are currently in eleventh, also revealed that he is already looking for reinforcements ahead of next season.

This is because of the upcoming Confederations Cup, taking place in Brazil in June, which will cause selection problems for Ramalho.

He added: "We need to have a number of players, because Santos will lose many players to competitions and of course our main player [Neymar].

"Every year it will be so until the World Cup, we will have to get used to it."

The Brazilian football season is currently very different to the European calendar as fixtures for the Seleção and international games feature throughout the regular season.

The national league starts in May and finishes in December, with teams also playing regional championships in the 26 states and the federal district at the beginning of the year.

Corinthians assistant manager Geraldo Delamore in UK to scout Chelsea

The assistant coach of Corinthians, Geraldo Delamore, was at White Hart Lane on Saturday to witness Chelsea´s 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Corinthians plan to analyse Chelsea intensely before the Fifa Club World Club in Japan this December and Delamore will stay in England for Chelsea´s tie with Manchester United on Sunday.

Corinthians head coach Tite likes to study future opposition in depth and collected extensive scout reports on Boca Juniors in preparation for the Copa Libertadores final. Using this data to restrict the space allowed to Boca´s key man Juan Roman Riquelme, a key part in their historic victory.

The report from Chelsea´s victory over Tottenham though may give the coach some sleepless nights. The new look Chelsea forward line of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Oscar and Fernando Torres was once again outstanding and Mata, now in his second season at Stamford Bridge, was the key man in turning round the second half against Spurs after Chelsea had fallen behind.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has bemoaned that FC Porto’s Colombian winger James Rodriguez would ‘cost a fortune’

Rodriguez, 21, joined Porto in 2010 from Argentinian side Banfield and has forged a burgeoning reputation for himself on the Iberian peninsular.

The Colombia international has been linked with a move to Manchester United for some time, while other reports indicate a growing interest from Real Madrid in his talents.

Ahead of the Premier League side’s clash with Braga in the Champions League, Ferguson was asked about recent reports of an impending move for the young star report Mais Futebol.

“With regards to James Rodriguez, I hope the news is not true,” joked the Scot, before elaborating: “I hope it’s not true because it costs a fortune to sign a player from FC Porto.”

A left-footed attacking midfielder, capable of playing both centrally or from a wide position, Rodriguez has been amongst the goals in the Liga Sagres this campaign, scoring three times in his first six league games of the season, as well as once in the Champions League.

In his two years in Portugal, Rodriguez has won two league titles, as well as a Europa League medal in 2010-11 and a Portuguese Cup to add to the Argentine Apertura title he won during his time in the South American country.

Bogotá, 22 de octubre de 2012.- Millonarios, que viene de perder por 3-1 frente al Palmeiras brasileño en el partido de ida de los octavos de final de la Copa Sudamericana de Fútbol, espera jugar con inteligencia para remontar mañana en el partido de vuelta el resultado en contra y seguir con la ilusión de los cuartos de final.

El equipo dirigido por Hernán Torres necesita mínimo marcar dos goles para igualar el resultado global y obligar a los cobros desde el punto penalti, o marcar tres para seguir de largo en el torneo sudamericano.

Con la tranquilidad que le da al técnico y a los jugadores haber clasificado por adelantado a los cuadrangulares semifinales de la Liga colombiana, Torres ha manifestado que en el compromiso de mañana se jugará la vida.

El Palmeiras, por su parte, llega a Colombia con tan solo catorce jugadores, pero entre ellos está su goleador el argentino Hernán Barcos, en su intención de asegurar la clasificación a los cuartos de final de este campeonato.

Barcos marcó los dos goles con los que su equipo venció por 2-0 al Cruzeiro en la ultima jornada del campeonato local.

Colón va por el milagro para mantenerse en Copa Sudamericana

Asunción. Octubre 23 de 2012 - Cerro Porteño paraguayo recibirá el martes en Asunción a Colón, ante el que buscará dar el gran salto para avanzar en la Copa Sudamericana, tras el 1-2 conquistado en el encuentro de ida, el 27 de septiembre pasado.

El equipo "azulgrana", dirigido por el uruguayo Jorge Fossati, buscará sacar provecho de su condición de local y de la necesidad que impulsará al equipo argentino a salir a buscar el arco rival.

"Seguro que van a venir con la idea de ganar para seguir en la Copa, al igual que nosotros y por eso me parece que se va a dar un partido abierto, donde tenemos que ser inteligentes", opinó el centrocampista ofensivo Jonathan Fabbro con vistas al encuentro.

"Tenemos que tratar de sacar provecho de la necesidad del rival. Jugar y manejar la desesperación de ellos, pero sin rehusar a buscar el arco rival y marcar para asegurar la serie", remarcó el jugador en declaraciones reproducidas por el diario Última Hora.

Cerro se medirá contra Colón en su estadio, el General Pablo Rojas, más conocido como "La Olla Azulgrana", luego de la derrota por 2-1 sufrida ante el Guaraní en la duodécima jornada del torneo Clausura.

Fossati expresó tras ese encuentro que le surgieron algunas dudas que tratará disipar recién el martes y no descartó recurrir a una alienación similar a la presentada ante el Guaraní.

Consideró, además, que el compromiso ante Colón representará una final y se mostró confiado en que obtendrán un resultado favorable.

El equipo argentino, por su parte, tiene previsto arribar a la capital paraguaya en la tarde de este lunes, tras la derrota por 2-0 sufrida el viernes contra el Arsenal en el campeonato local.

Los 20 jugadores del club de Santa Fe que fueron incluidos en la lista de viajeros realizarán esta noche el reconocimiento del campo de juego y luego descansarán a la espera del encuentro.

Colón está obligado a ganar en Asunción para seguir en carrera, tras la derrota de local por 1-2 sufrida el 27 de septiembre.

Pedro Benítez (m.21) y Roberto Nanni (m.77) marcaron en esa ocasión los goles del conjunto paraguayo, mientras que Lucas Mugni (m.45) descontó para los locales.

Brazil look on target without a number nine

"I was too busy scoring goals to learn how to play football," says Dario, a legendary figure in Brazilian football from the 1960s and 70s. A charismatic character, Dario invents phrases as easily as he used to put the ball in the net. "There´s no such thing as an ugly goal," he once said. "Ugly is not scoring goals."

If both remarks sound a little defensive, it is easy enough to explain. Brazilian football has been gifted with so many artists - players capable of snapping their marker in two with a sway of the hips, wrong-footing the keeper and then sliding home - that a little prejudice sometimes persists about the centre forward. The target man number nine whose game is restricted to getting the ball over the line can be seen, at best, as the exponent of a minor art.

Since the Olympics, Brazil coach Mano Menezes has been working along the lines of doing away with this creature in his starting line-up. There was no specialist centre forward in the team that beat China last month, nor in the side that would have played three weeks ago in the abandoned match against Argentina.

The absence of a number nine opens space for an extra player to elaborate the moves. When it works it is very easy on the eye - the whole world drools at the pass-and-move game of Barcelona. But there are very few teams capable of playing their way through the opposition with the exuberant ease of Lionel Messi and company. And Leandro Damiao, Brazil´s centre forward, seems to be developing well. He was top-scorer at London 2012.

I must confess, then, that I was very sceptical about this new tactical direction. I was even more sceptical about the recall of Kaka.

At the time he was named in Brazil´s squad for the recent friendlies against Iraq and Japan, Kaka had not even played a competitive game this season. He had seemed entirely surplus to requirements at Real Madrid, who would have loved to unload him in order to reduce their wage bill. The problem was that Kaka´s recent history of knee and groin injuries made it unlikely anyone would come in with a big-money bid.

How on earth, I thought, could a player in this situation be ready to play for Brazil in the short term, or capable of a significant contribution in the long term?

There is, of course, no way of knowing for sure that Kaka will have enough gas in the tank to make it all the way to a fourth World Cup in 2014. But after his displays in the two friendlies against Asian opponents there can be little doubt he was ready. Announcing his recall, Menezes had said the player was looking good in training - information confirmed by the way the veteran was able to make space against his marker to set up team-mates or shoot at goal.

And just as my scepticism about Kaka proved misplaced, so were my doubts about the formation. In fact the two are intrinsically linked. Kaka was that piece in the jigsaw that completed the side with no number nine.

The new system is something like a 4-2-4-0. Nominally the strikers, Hulk and Neymar, are thrown wide - on the right and left respectively - so both can cut in onto their stronger foot. They can also track back - especially Hulk, whose physical capacity makes him especially useful in this respect.

In front of the back four are two all-round midfielders. Ramires is the more defensive of the two, with Paulinho looking to break forward, although the roles can be reversed. And in front of them are Oscar and Kaka. The Chelsea youngster is more the midfielder, proficient at dropping back to set up the play. The Real Madrid veteran is the support striker, bringing his pace and directness to bear in the final 30 metres. Both, though, are equally likely to pop up in the centre forward position and shoot at goal.

Oscar and Kaka were both on target twice as Brazil ran up 10 goals in the two games. Iraq were swatted away 6-0. Japan were much more of a test - they had just won away against France, and they had their moments against Brazil when they met in Poland last Tuesday. Brazil´s 4-0 win, then, was a remarkable scoreline.

Tostao, himself an improvised centre forward in the Mexico ´70 team, was impressed. "For the first time," he wrote after the Japan game, "I´m hopeful Brazil will have a great team in the [2014] World Cup. The four front players are both midfielders and strikers. All four give passes and score goals. This is the way forward."

He recognises, however, that Japan´s high defensive line and adventurous approach made things easier, predicting greater difficulties "against stronger opponents and also against average sides who mark well, sit deep and counter-attack" - the very type of opposition Brazil are sure to encounter on home ground in 2014.

Brazil will trust that 4-2-4-0 can keep them defensively compact. It was the system Corinthians used this year to win the Copa Libertadores with an outstanding defensive record - just four goals conceded in 14 games.

There is a problem, though, with the left side of Brazil´s defence. For a start, it is less protected - Hulk works back on the right, but Neymar on the left is usually the most advanced player and the target for the quick ball forward. At left-back, Marcelo is far happier pushing forward than defending - even Iraq were able to get into the space behind him. Injury meant he was replaced by Leandro Castan, a centre-back, for the Japan game, which could be worth repeating. Even then the positional sense of left-sided centre back David Luiz can be exposed.

There are, then, some interesting doubts. Can Brazil improve their defending down the left? Will Kaka retain form and fitness? Is the system with no centre forward the best way of playing against all opponents? But doubt is always necessary. My scepticism clearly was not.

Argentina jugará amistoso con Suecia

COPENHAGUE -- Suecia y Argentina disputarán un partido amistoso el próximo 6 de febrero en el nuevo estadio nacional de Solna (Estocolmo), informó la Federación Sueca de Fútbol en un comunicado.

Será el segundo encuentro que acogerá este estadio, que se inaugurará el 14 de noviembre con otro amistoso frente a Inglaterra.

"Los amantes del fútbol en Suecia deben felicitarse, será un partido extraordinario", señaló el seleccionador sueco Erik Hamrén.

Hamrén destacó que su equipo se acaba de medir también a Brasil en un amistoso y a Alemania en partido clasificatorio para el Mundial 2014, "rivales fantásticos para una pequeña nación futbolística como Suecia".

"Messi es un jugador sin igual, una estrella mundial. Ahora se presentará contra Suecia y nuestra propia estrella mundial y capitán Zlatan Ibrahimovic", declaró en el comunicado el seleccionador sueco.

La última vez que Suecia y Argentina se enfrentaron fue en la fase de grupos del Mundial 2002, cuando el equipo escandinavo arrancó un empate (1-1) que le bastó para clasificarse para octavos de final, mientras el conjunto entonces entrenado por Marcelo Bielsa, uno de los favoritos, quedaba eliminado.

BUENOS AIRES -- El defensor Gabriel Mercado está listo para recuperar la titularidad en el Superclásico ante Boca y el entrenador de River, Matías Almeyda, también imagina el equipo para el domingo con las presencias entre los once de Martín Aguirre y David Trezeguet.

Mercado, quien se recuperó de una lesión en la rodilla derecha, participó con normalidad de un partido de ocho contra ocho en la cancha número tres del predio que River tiene en Ezeiza y dejó en claro que estará disponible para el Superclásico del domingo a las 15.30.

Albín y Battaglia se entrenaron

BUENOS AIRES -- Emiliano Albín, recuperado de su lesión, y Lautaro Acosta, que reapareció el pasado domingo durante el segundo tiempo, se perfilan como probables titulares del equipo de Boca Juniors que el próximo domingo visitará a River Plate.

El regreso de Albín, que sufrió un esguince de tobillo izquierdo el 7 de octubre ante Belgrano, implicará la salida de Leandro Paredes, reemplazado por Nicolás Colazo al cabo del primer tiempo frente a Estudiantes de La Plata, con una serie de variantes posicionales y el regreso al esquema 4-4-2 desde el comienzo del partido.

En cuanto al ingreso de Acosta, que desde que llegó a Boca sólo fue titular ante Unión el 25 de agosto, lo más factible es que deje el equipo Lucas Viatri, tal como ocurriera a los 19 minutos del segundo tiempo ante Estudiantes pero no puede descartarse que el que salga sea Santiago Silva.

Una última posibilidad, la que se avizora como la más difícil, es que el director técnico Julio Falcioni se decida por la inclusión de Viatri, Acosta y Silva juntos, el primero más retrasado aunque no en definida función de enganche y en tal caso el candidato a salir de la oncena inicial es Juan Sánchez Miño.

El más probable equipo a presentar por Boca en el Superclásico por la duodécima fecha del torneo Inicial es el siguiente: Agustín Orion; Albín, Rolando Schiavi, Guillermo Burdisso, Clemente Rodríguez; Guillermo Fernández, Leandro Somoza, Walter Erviti, Sánchez Miño; Acosta y Silva.

Todo dependerá también de lo que vayan mostrando los jugadores a lo largo de la semana, a consecuencia de lo cual Falcioni irá definiendo sus ideas pero por de pronto puede darse como casi seguro que Fernández, titular por primera vez en la temporada ante Estudiantes, mantendrá su lugar.

En el regreso a los entrenamientos luego del lunes de descanso, los que jugaron la mayor parte del encuentro en el 1-1 por la décima fecha realizaron ejercicios regenerativos.

El resto llevó a cabo una práctica de fútbol en espacios reducidos, siete contra siete, en la cancha número 3 del complejo Pedro Pompilio, la cual se extendió por espacio de 30 minutos.

Con remeras amarillas y azules jugaron Manuel Vicentini, Albín, Diego Rivero, Cristian Chávez, Cristian Alvarez, Orlando Gaona Lugo y Nicolás Blandi en tanto que con pecheras naranjas lo hicieron Oscar Ustari, Franco Sosa, Matías Caruzzo, Cristian Erbes, Colazo, Paredes y Acosta.

Christian Cellay cumplió con entrenamiento diferenciado por su contractura de gemelo derecho sufrida la semana anterior y después de mucho tiempo, Sebastián Battaglia desarrolló actividad en campo, una sesión de trote por la cancha principal del complejo.
