Santos in position to reach CCL quarters

Santos is fairly comfortable about getting to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League. Tigres is less so.

Santos goes into Wednesday night´s Group 1 finale against Toronto FC in Torreon, Mexico, with a three-point lead over the Canadian side and a 3-1 victory in their first encounter at BMO Field.

For Toronto to reach the quarterfinals for a second straight year, it has to beat Santos Laguna by at least three goals or two goals - so long as it scores four.

It is a daunting task made even more difficult by Toronto FC´s injury woes.

The Canadians could be without defenders Logan Emory and Darren O´Dea, as well as striker Eric Hassli. All three are listed as questionable. Emory left Saturday´s 0-0 draw with the Montreal Impact with a lingering shoulder injury.

O´Dea returned from World Cup qualifying with Ireland with a thigh injury and while Hassli returned from a sprained ankle on Saturday, he could miss the trip to Mexico because his wife was expecting to give birth.

"We´ll just take a deep breath and assess it," Toronto coach Paul Mariner told MLSSoccer.com.

Santos , which leads Group 1 with nine points, is hoping for a repeat of last season´s semifinals second leg in Torreon, when Santos won 6-2. It enters the match coming off a 4-1 loss to Toluca in the Mexican Apertura.

"Los Guerreros" are looking to add to Mexico´s dominance in the Champions League since its inception. Tigres UNAL would too, but its position is more precarious.

It trails Group 6 leader Alajuelense by two points entering Wednesday night´s match at Estadio Universitario, and needs a victory to avoid becoming the first Mexican team to fail to get to the quarterfinals.

The teams played to a 2-2 draw in the first Group Stage meeting on August 22 at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto as Luis Miguel Valle struck the dramatic equalizer in the first minute of second-half stoppage time.

Tigres is hoping to ride the momentum from a 5-0 victory over Pumas UNAM in the Mexican Apertura on Saturday. Alberto Acosta scored three goals in the victory that snapped a three-game losing streak and a six-game winless skid.

"I hope the team comes out with this confidence in their teammates and what worked," Tigres coach Ricardo Ferreti said. "Advancing to the next round is one of the goals we set, seeking qualification in both tournaments."

Alajuelense, though, is not entering with the idea of merely playing for a draw.

"The team can spring a surprise, because we´re going with the mentality to win," Alajuelense coach Oscar Ramirez told Nacion.com. "What happens is that we still do not know what we are going to face.

"If they (Tigres) will focus on the domestic season, or if CONCACAF interests them more. Those are the circumstances which with we have worked."

While Group 1 and Group 6 are undecided, Seattle already has clinched the top spot in Group 4 and will work for better quarterfinal seeding when it hosts Marathon Wednesday at CenturyLink Field.

The Sounders enter the match having clinched a top three berth in Major League Soccer´s Western Conference with a 3-1 win over FC Dallas Saturday.

"I think we are hungry, more than anything," Seattle midfielder Brad Evans told the Seattle Times. "We can compete with anybody and we have shown that throughout the year. For us, I think we are confident, but we aren´t overconfident."

Despite having being mathematically eliminated from reaching knockout stage, Marathon, which lost to Seattle, 3-2, in San Pedro Sula on September 19, is looking to end its Champions League campaign strong.

"We will take this match with the same responsibility to represent the country and we hope to do it in the best way," captain Mario Berrios told Diez.hn.

Xelajú ready for Guadalajara challenge

QUETZALTENANGO, Guatemala -- The mission for Xelajú is clear enough.
To progress to the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals, the defending Guatemalan champion need not win at Guadalajara on Thursday. All the Super Chivos require to seal a place in knockout round on their visit to the Estadio Omnilife is at least one point, but under certain circumstances a narrow loss would be enough to make history.

Hernan Medford´s side knows it won´t be easy -- no Mexican club has ever fallen short of the CCL quarterfinals. Last month, Guatemala´s Municipal headed to Monterrey with a chance to advance and was subsequently dismantled 3-0 by the Rayados.

Xelajú will need to be more competitive on Mexican soil to fulfill its dream of advancing. Such an achievement would certainly provide a boost to the Guatemalan game following the national team´s agonizing elimination from qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

After a memorable 1-0 win over Chivas in August, Medford´s troops travel to Guadalajara with plenty of confidence. In that match, Edgar Chinchilla´s second half goal made the difference, as the Mexican giants were surprised away from home in what was for them the opener of their CCL campaign.

That loss, though, wouldn´t be the end of Chivas´ struggles. After a triumph at home over Trinidad & Tobago´s DirecTV W Connection, they labored through a 1-1 draw in the return match on the road last time out, meaning only a win on Thursday -- perhaps by multiple goals -- will prevent disaster for the fabled club.

To obtain the necessary result against Guadalajara, it is essential that the Super Chivos be on the receiving end of more luck than they had at the weekend, drawing 1-1 with Suchitepéquez in the domestic league. Playing in its mountain fortress at the Estadio Mario Camposecoin Quetzaltenango, the home team dominated the action, but hit the post four times, missed two penalty kicks, and scored an own-goal in dropping points at home.

Medford´s squad has been more fortunate during the CONCACAF campaign, coming from behind to tie on the road at DirecTV W Connection, edging Chivas at home, and fighting off a stiff challenge to earn a valuable three points when the Trinidad & Tobago team came to visit last month.

Xelajú tuned up further during the recent international break with a trip to the USA, where it emerged victorious in a friendly match against an all-star team of international veterans led by former Mexican internationals Luis Hernandez and Claudio Suarez, played in Tennessee.

Now, Medford has his focus set squarely on qualifying: "We´ll be playing eleven versus eleven," he told local media as the team prepared for Tuesday´s flight to Mexico. "If Chivas doesn´t respect that, then they´ll be in some trouble. The result here wasn´t because they played badly, it was because of the things our team did on the field."

With seven points from three matches, undefeated Xelajú leads Group 8 by three points over Guadalajara. The Guatemalans can move on with a win or a tie on Thursday, while the Mexicans can assure themselves of advancement by winning the match by more than two goals.

A 1-0 win would also mean a quarterfinal spot for Chivas, but any other scoreline in a one-goal win by the home team would put Xelajú through on away goals between the two sides.

Alajuelense heads to Mexico with confidence

ALAJUELA, Costa Rica - With plenty of optimism and hopes of qualifying for the quarterfinals of the 2012-13 edition of the CONCACAF Champions League, Alajuelense departed Monday for Mexico, ahead of a Wednesday night showdown with Tigres in Monterrey.

It´s all come down to this final match in Group 6, with the Costa Ricans sitting atop the table on seven points, and the Mexican side just two back.

That makes the scenario for the final group match absolutely clear for both sides: Tigres need a win to advance, and avoid becoming the first Mexican team to miss out on the quarterfinals since the tournament went to the group format for the 2008-09 season.

Given the high stakes, Alajuelense´s players are categorizing this match as one of the biggest of the year for them.

"We know what we´re playing for," goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton told the club´s website, lda.cr. "This is one of the biggest matches, maybe the biggest of the semester for us, because we´re close to qualifying."

The Rojinegros finds themselves in a promising position after having navigated the group stage undefeated to this point. When the two teams met on August 22nd in Costa Rica, Tigres was only seconds away from earning a valuable victory on the road. A goal one minute into second-half stoppage time from Luis Valle gave La Liga a share of the points.

That result will be a boost to the Costa Ricans´ confidence heading into the Estadio Unversitario, but they know all the same that a different environment awaits them in the building known as "The Volcano."

"This game is a final, we´re not holding anything back," said attacker Allen Guevara. "We´re going to get the points. We studied the last match that we played here (in Costa Rica), though we know going there that things will be totally different."

Despite the standings, the Costa Ricans say they have no intention of playing for a tie, and the single point that would hand them the classification. As the game wears on, though, head coach Oscar Ramirez´s team will be conscious of the opportunity to get a result and make history.

"We´re going to play a good game, to go for the win and if not, at least the tie," said defender Kenner Gutierrez. "Everything is in our hands to bring back the qualification we desire."

Aside from an advantage in the Group 6 table, Alajuelense will have some history on its side when it takes the field Wednesday night. While this is Tigres´ first participation in the CONCACAF Champions League, Alajuelense won the tournament in 1986 and 2004, when it was known as the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Erviti quiere ganar y jugar mejor

Vélez recupera a Peruzzi
