San Lorenzo for fanden.
Forza Napoli Sempre!
Så er der en rigtig klassiker og must see kamp i aften, 19.30 dansk tid, mellem River Plate og Boca Juniors. Det skal nok blive sjovt...
Tr1986...

Bernard

Who?

Name: Bernard Anício Caldeira Duarte
Date of Birth: 8 September 1992
Nationality: Brazilian
Position: Attacking-midfielder
Club: Atlético Mineiro

Making his Name:

Bernard arrived at his current side Atlético Mineiro in 2006, aged 13, and spent the next few seasons quietly making his way through the youth ranks at the club, to little wider attention. By 2010, though, it was considered that the 17-year-old was ready to take initial steps into the world of first-team football and Bernard was loaned to Minas Gerais state second division side Democrata (SL) where he immediately displayed his undoubted potential, scoring 14 goals to finish as the tournament’s top-scorer. ”The period at Democrata contributed a lot to my maturity as a player,” Bernard later told Lancenet. “I encountered big problems, played in front of supporters and alongside great players that have been at many clubs. I gained a new-found maturity which was important for me, so I could then arrive with the first-team confident and motivated.”

After the success of his loan-spell spell, Bernard was called to the Atlético Mineiro first-team for the start of the 2011 season, making his first few appearances as an improvised right-back for Dorival Júnior’s side. Mid-season, though, after a handful of appearances in the state championship, Bernard returned to youth football to participate in the Taça Belo Horizonte. The step-down proved to be another opportunity for Bernard to shine, scoring the winning goal in the final as Atlético picked up their fifth title, before collecting the Player of the Tournament award for his displays. An immediate return to the senior squad followed and the 5’5″ youngster finished the season strongly, with supporters around the country beginning to take notice of his dynamic performances in an Atlético team that was still fighting hard against relegation.

It was 2012, though, that proved to be the breakthrough year for the playmaker, making the step-up from being known as a promising youngster to winning matches for his side single-handedly. His rise to prominence was, of course, aided by much improved displays from Atlético as a whole, as the Belo Horizonte side strode to the Minas Gerais state championship title – thanks, in part, to two goals from Bernard in the second-leg of the final as they overcame local rivals América-MG 4-1 on aggregate. His performances were enough to earn a call-up to the initial Brazil Under-23 selection for the Olympic Games, although he would eventually miss out on the final squad.

The tone was set for a positive season and, with the arrival of superstar Ronaldinho in early June, there was a belief at Atlético that they could win the Brasileirão league title. Bernard would miss the side’s disappointing exit from the Copa do Brasil through suspension, but with the arrival of a new creative partner and the start of the league season, the youngster came into his own, scoring six goals and adding six more assists by mid-September, as Atlético lay in second-place in pursuit of leaders Fluminense. In the same month, Bernard completed his rapid ascent to the summit of the Brazilian game, earning a call-up for the Brazil squad to face Argentina in the Superclassico das Américas tournament, as well as signing a new five-year contract to remain at Atlético.

Style of Play:

Bernard, when on form, is the life-and-soul of his side, combining industry to no small amount of talent. Given his slender frame and diminutive stature, he would be forgiven for hiding from his defensive duties, but what the youngster does so well is to contribute to all areas of the team’s set-up. His enjoyment for football is clear and this represents itself in his desire for the ball, whether demanding a pass off a team-mate, or hassling an opponent for possession. When his Atlético side have gone through their lowest spells in the 2012 season, it has been Bernard who, at times, has single-handedly dragged them through games and to valuable points in the race for the league title. The one downside can be that, due to his dogged determination and enthusiasm, Bernard has picked up his fair-share of cards at senior level, both yellow and red.

As is the expectation of Brazilian attacking-midfielders, Bernard is supremely comfortable in possession, able to play as the team’s main No. 10 playmaker, or in a supporting role from a wider position or off the striker. With excellent close control, the Belo Horizonte born midfielder likes nothing better than to dribble directly at opposition defenders and has shown himself capable of clever improvisation when required (as shown in the video below). His first-touch and short passing have proven to be amongst the best that Brazil currently have to offer and with his lightening short-distance speed, he is well suited to fast, fluid attacking football. Should he step-up to international level, or move to Europe, a period of adaptation would be required and may take longer than for others, given his physical composition, however there appears little doubt that he is capable of playing the dynamic role required of the modern midfielder.

What Others Say:

“He is a big talent. It’s a pleasure to share in the moment when another star is born. I am happy and I hope he continues in this manner for many, many years.” - Ronaldinho, Atlético Mineiro team-mate, September 2012.

“Bernard is arguably the best young player in the Brasileirão in 2012, often outshining his team-mate Ronaldinho. He is fast, technically brilliant and seems to have a good mentality as well.” - Paulo Freitas, Football Manager Head Researcher for Brazil, October 2012. (Han er åbenbart god i FM ;-) )

The Future:

With Atlético Mineiro set to qualify for the 2013 Copa Libertadores, Bernard’s first step along the road to fulfilling his talents will come at continental level, in a tournament that regularly presents numerous challenges for the latest batch of Brazilian revelations. He will doubtless finish 2012 with the prestigious ‘Revelation of the Brasileirão’ award to his name and continue to attract interest from abroad – indeed, it has been confirmed that Atlético rejected bids for his services this summer. However, given the club’s financial position and reliance on player sales to fund operating costs it is likely that, following completion of their Libertadores campaign, Bernard will be sold should a suitable offer emerge. Inter Milan are amongst those to have been recently linked to the 20-year-old midfielder.

With his performances at club level continuing, there have been many observers who suggest that Bernard could add an extra dimension to the Seleção and it is likely that the opportunity will shortly present itself following his recent call-up to the squad for the home-based internationals with Argentina. The World Cup is still two years away and, especially with the regularity of recent changes to the composition of the national team, there is still ample time for the Atlético midfielder to make his mark and play in the Brazil-based tournament.

In order for Bernard to achieve that aim, though, he will need to continue his form of 2012 into the new year and ensure that when the transition to European football does come, he hits the ground running. It may be the speed of the transition to the game in the Old Continent that decides whether the 2014 event is a viable aim. A fast start and he can carve himself a late opportunity in Mano Menezes’ plans; likewise a slow start could see the end of those ambitions. Longer term, though, there can be little doubt that Bernard will pull on the Canarinha for years to come – providing he continues to maintain the form that has brought him to wider attention over the past twelve months. The future promises much, but it is now up to Bernard to prove that he can take his game to the next level.

Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”
1-0 mand!
