Denner sad to miss shot at Chelsea
Corinthians may have the chance to test themselves against the likes of Chelsea at the Club World Cup, but they will do so without their most promising young talent – with left-back Denner sidelined for six months following knee surgery.
Denner, 18, ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his right-knee during his first-team debut against Bahia last month, ending his dreams of travelling to Japan and helping the side compete for the much sought-after trophy.
Now, the Brazil Under-20 international will be forced to watch the clash from home and admits that his absence could have long-term effects on his career, with Corinthians now in need of cover at left-back for the start of next season.
“At the time, I was thinking of the Club World Cup. Everything came into my head,” Denner told Lancenet. “It was my debut and December was so close. I thought of the state championships also.
“I know that the first-team will only return in the middle – that I would have more chances. I knew that this was my time. They now need someone as back-up to Fábio [Santos]. You cannot improvise for six months. What will be, will be. It’s only to be expected.”
On an international level, the injury will also deprive Denner of the opportunity to participate in the South American U20 Championship in January, a platform that has quickly shot many players to greater things.
A talented wing-back, who played a key role in his side’s Copa São Paulo youth championship success of last January, it can only be hoped that the player quickly regains his previous status and can go on to fulfil the career that his undoubted talent deserves.
