U de Chile viajó a Sao Paulo

SANTIAGO DE CHILE -- La Universidad de Chile viajó a Brasil para enfrentar al Sao Paulo en la revancha de los cuartos de final de la Copa Sudamericana, en la que tiene que superar el 0-2 que sufrió la semana pasada en el encuentro de ida, jugado en Santiago.

"Vamos con la fe intacta, este grupo ya ha demostrado que nada es imposible y, a medida que pasan las horas y se acerca el partido, crece la ilusión de este grupo para seguir haciendo historia", sostuvo el capitán de la U, José Rojas, antes de embarcarse junto a sus compañeros.

Para seguir en carrera, el actual campeón de la Sudamericana debería superar por más de dos goles de diferencia al Sao Paulo, algo que en Chile se considera poco menos que imposible, dado que el equipo universitario tiene un problema que ya parece endémico: la falta de gol.

En una prolongación de esa flaqueza, la U solo empató este domingo 0-0 con la Universidad Católica en la edición 175 del "Clásico Universitario" chileno, enmarcado esta vez en la decimosexta jornada del torneo de Clausura.

"El grupo está tranquilo y sabe que cuando lleguen los goles todo cambiará. No hemos perdido la característica de juego, no es que lleguemos al arco y nos echemos atrás. Este equipo siempre va para adelante y lo que importa ahora es marcar los goles en los partidos importantes", sentenció al respecto Rojas.

"Todos los partidos son diferentes, esperemos que este partido pase a la historia grande de la U", agregó.

"Ya es parte de este grupo dejar todo en la cancha. Ese mensaje pasa a segundo plano porque estamos acostumbrados a eso y ni hay que decirlo", finalizó Rojas, quien volverá a la formación titular tras haber descansado en el parido con la UC.

También volverán al once titular el portero Johnny Herrera y el centrocampista Charles Aránguiz.

El lateral izquierdo Eugenio Mena no viajó, al haber sido expulsado en el partido de ida.

Aunque el técnico Jorge Sampaoli definirá el equipo titular este martes en Sao Paulo, la U de Chile podría jugar con Johnny Herrera; Osvaldo González, Albert Acevedo, José Rojas; Matías Rodríguez, Charles Aránguiz, Sebastián Martínez (o Guillermo Marino), Roberto Cereceda; Gustavo Lorenzetti; Sebastián Ubilla y Enzo Gutiérrez.

"La Supercopa sería coronar gran año"

BUENOS AIRES -- El volante Jorge Ortiz, listo para reaparecer en el equipo de Arsenal que enfrentará a Boca Juniors, se mostró ilusionado con ganar mañana la Supercopa y "coronar un gran año" tras consagrarse en junio último en el torneo Clausura.

Arsenal viene de ser goleado 5-1 ante Vélez y está de mal en peor en el torneo Inicial, pero ahora tiene la chance de ganar una nueva copa más. "Duele estar en esta situación en el torneo, pero ahora tenemos una final y de tener la suerte de ganarla, coronaríamos un gran año después de haber ganado el Clausura", sostuvo Ortiz por radio La Red.

Va amainando el dolor de la goleada en el Viaducto: "Hicimos el duelo ayer y hoy también un poquito, hablamos, dijimos lo que teníamos que decir".

Ortiz, ausente frente a Vélez por una distensión muscular, explicó que "decidimos parar un partido para llegar bien a esta final que para nosotros es importante, más por jugar contra Boca".

El ingreso de Ortiz por el chileno Gonzalo Espinoza sería la única variante respecto del partido ante Vélez, ya que se espera que el delantero Gustavo Canales, con una sobrecarga muscular, esté presente (de no ser así lo suplirá Milton Céliz).

Luego del entrenamiento matutino, Arsenal programó viajar a Catamarca, sede de la final, en vuelo chárter de Lade con partida prevista desde El Palomar a las 17.

Armenio quiere a Maradona Jr

BUENOS AIRES -- Noray Nakis, presidente de Deportivo Armenio, de la Primera B, confirmó este martes que están "en negociaciones para incorporar a Diego Maradona Jr.", pero supeditó su llegada a la opinión que tenga Diego Maradona, con quien lo une "una amistad de hace muchos años".

"Es verdad que estamos en negociaciones para incorporarlo (a Diego Jr.), pero para poder avanzar me interesa hablar con su supuesto padre, Diego Maradona, por la amistad que nos une", explicó el directivo a Télam.

"Necesito un sí o un no de Diego y por eso mañana voy a intentar hablar con él", agregó Nakis, en referencia a que Maradona se encuentra de gira por Asia.

En tanto, el titular de Deportivo Armenio aceptó que la contratación de Diego Jr., de 26 años, puede darle una gran repercusión mediática al club, pero aseguró que también el jugador puede aportarle mucho al equipo desde el aspecto futbolístico.

"Es un apellido fuerte y tenemos que estar preparados para lo que pueda generar mediáticamente. Pero también futbolísticamente nos podría dar cosas interesantes", aclaró.

Buffarini, expulsado ante Quilmes, sanción que cumplió frente a Boca, volverá seguro pero el técnico definirá si lo hace como lateral, tal cual jugó los dos partidos bajo su comando, o vuelve como volante por derecha.

Deberá aguardar que Matías Mirabaje se recupere de un edema en el recto anterior de la pierna derecha que lo obligó hoy a hacer trabajos diferenciados. Estiman que llegará.

Pizzi develará mañana quién juega por Jara como media punta y uno de los que tienen chances es Alan Ruiz, quien en ese caso cambiaría de posición.

The price is wrong! Chelsea cool interest in Falcao and turn to less expensive options


Loic Remy and Jackson Martinez could be available for far less than the Columbian´s £46m price tag

Chelsea are going cold on Atletico Madrid hitman Radamel Falcao - because Roman Abramovich is no longer convinced the Colombian is worth his asking price.

Falcao has been the revelation of Atletico´s impressive start to the season, including the outstanding hat-trick that sank Roberto Di Matteo´s Blues in the UEFA SuperCup Final in Monaco in August.

But with Abramovich retaining faith in Fernando Torres despite his lack of goals, the Chelsea owner is now signalling he is less than keen on meeting Atletico´s £46million price for the South American.

While a January swoop is not out of the question - there are still two months to go before the window opens and Chelsea have swapped targets at short notice before - the Blues are now looking at cheaper alternatives to add to their fire-power.

Marseilles´ France striker Loic Remy, who was on the Chelsea radar at the close of the summer window, is now understood to be back on the agenda, with the £15m tag not seen as too onerous.

And the other potential target is Falcao´s fellow Colombian, Porto´s Jackson Martinez, who has scored nine in as many league appearances - and 14 in all competitions - for the Portuguese side since his £8m arrival from Jaguares, beating the club records set by Falcao and Brazilian Hulk.

Porto President Pinta Da Costa, who forced Chelsea to pay £13m to land Andre Villas-Boas in 2011 and played hardball with Spurs over Joao Moutinho this summer, is likely to ask for nearer £20m for the 26-year-old but Chelsea are looking to give Torres back-up until the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are scouting Wolfsburg’s Swiss international left back Ricardo Rodriguez.

WCQ Hexagonal Schedule Set

MIAMI - CONCACAF announced that the schedule of play for the fourth and final round of the CONCACAF Qualifiers to the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014™ was determined Wednesday evening through a random drawing performed in Miami by FIFA Head of World Cup and Olympic Qualifying, Mr. Gordon Savic. As a result of the drawing, the first round of matches in the CONCACAF Hexagonal round, which will begin on Wednesday, February 6th, 2013, will feature Mexico hosting Jamaica, Honduras hosting United States, and Panama hosting Costa Rica.

The six countries that have advanced to the CONCACAF Hexagonal -- Costa Rica, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, and the United States -- represent the top two finishers from group play in the third round of FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers. In the Hexagonal round, each team will play every other twice—once at home, once away—for a total of 10 matches per team, and 30 matches total. The top three teams at the end of the Hexagonal round will automatically advance to the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil. The fourth place team will advance to an intercontinental playoff, where it will compete against the first place team from the Oceania Football Confederation in a home-and-home match-up in November of 2013.

"We want to thank FIFA for holding this draw as we are proud for our six Member Associations who will be competing for the honor of representing CONCACAF at the next FIFA World Cup," said CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb. Xelaju and Herediano look to go distance

GUATEMALA CITY -- Two teams from the Central American region are through to the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals, making for an impressive sum, even if in some ways it wasn´t an overly prolific group phase for Central American clubs on the whole.

The defining images this year, though, will be the scenes of triumph surrounding successful bids to advance by Costa Rica´s Herediano and Guatemala´s Xelajú, each of which obtained tickets to the quarterfinals with scrappy efforts away from home on the final match day.

A sterling group phase saw Herediano endure Group 2 without a loss and turning in a solid all-around effort under difficult conditions in Utah, securing a scoreless tie with 2010/11 finalist Real Salt Lake.

Xelaju pulled off what was perhaps an even more unlikely feat by going to Estadio Omnilife in Mexico and scoring a priceless away goal late, ending the first round even with Guadalajara on points, but advancing on away goals scored in head-to-head matches between the pair.

The survival of Central America´s representatives came down to the wire. At the end of the day, having a pair of teams through to the quarterfinals makes for solid representation from the region.This is particularly significant given that the last edition of the CONCACAF Champions League saw only one Central American side advance to the knockout phase.

In 2011-12, El Salvador´s Isidro Metapan earned a quarterfinal berth, but then fell to Pumas, leaving Central America without a presence in the semifinals.If last season´s lone quarterfinal entrant marked a bit of a lull for the area, the high water mark under the current group format came in 2009, when Comunicaciones, Arabe Unido and Marathon all made the quarterfinals, only to be eliminated in that round.The previous year, Marathon advanced from the region.

Two years ago, two Central American teams also made the quarterfinals.Saprissa and Olimpia faced off in the first elimination round, assuring regional representation in the semifinals for what would be the most recent time to date.

In 2013, Xelajú and Herediano will both be looking to update that record by progressing to the semis.For the Costa Rican side, there is plenty of precedent for success in the CCL.Saprissa was in the semifinals as recently as that 2010/11 campaign, and also made the 2008 final of the then Champions Cup, nearly adding to a regional title won in 2005.

Where Xelajú is concerned, the Quetzaltenango side has already matched the point of reference for Guatemalan clubs -- Comunicaciones´ 2009/10 quarterfinal run.The Cremas´ quarterfinal appearance and subsequent loss to eventual champion Pachuca marks the furthest advancement for a Guatemalan club since the continental championships moved to the group stage format.

In attempting to improve upon those performances, neither Central American team will have it easy this time around.In the home-and-home playoff series to kick-off in early March, Herediano will face 2011 MLS champion LA Galaxy, while Xelajú is faced with an equally stiff task in being matched against two-time defending CCL champion Monterrey.

Opponents will underestimate the Central American teams at their own risk.As the remaining representatives of a region looking to continue a tradition of excellence in international play, both proud clubs can be expected to provide solid challenges to the region´s giants come 2013. Getting this far has proven that Central America´s CCL entrants are certainly up to the task.
