Villafánez: "Gallego nos hizo bien"

BUENOS AIRES -- Lucas Villafáñez, mediocampista de Independiente, manifestó que a pesar de los resultados, la llegada de Américo Gallego le hizo muy bien al grupo. Además dijo que como carrilero por derecha le "cuesta un poco", pero está a disposición del técnico.

"Nuestro objetivo ahora es claro, vamos a tratar de sumar la mayor cantidad de puntos posibles para salir de la zona de descenso en el torneo", indicó el juvenil en una entrevista con el Diario Patagónico.

"Tenemos que mantenernos tranquilos, trabajar mucho y confiar en nosotros para salir de este momento, tenemos uno de los mejores planteles", agregó.

Con la llegada del ex entrenador de River, éste decidió que Fabián Vargas ocupara la banda derecha del mediocampo, pero ante la lesión del ex Boca, Villafáñez es el hombre elegido por el "Tolo" para esa posición.

"Me cuesta un poco jugar de ´ocho´ porque no es mi posición original, pero de a poco voy conociendo el puesto. Uno siempre está a disposición", remarcó con humildad.

"El ´Tolo´ me pide que encare, que trate de desbordar y tirar centros. También que me encargue de ordenarme defensivamente y ocupar posiciones", reconoció.

A falta de dos fechas para finalizar el Torneo de Liguillas, Real Garcilaso del Cusco se convirtió en el segundo clasificado para jugar el Play Off al empatar César Vallejo y Alianza Lima cero a cero el día sábado y quedar a 8 puntos del equipo cusqueño, que con su triunfo ante el Sport Boys del domingo sumó 81 puntos (11 puntos de diferencia) en la tabla de posiciones.

Excelente campaña del club cusqueño que a través de las fechas fue adquiriendo la madurez necesaria que los llevó a hacerse imbatibles de locales (20 victorias, 1 empate) y sumando puntos de visita que lo posesionaron a lo largo del año en los primeros lugares junto al favorito Sporting Cristal.

La solidez mostrada en la línea defensiva donde Joel Herrera y Fernando Alloco fueron bien respaldados por Huerta y Santillán, un medio campo que se complementó y fue añadiendo fútbol con el correr de los partidos donde destacaron Eduardo y Edson Uribe y el creativo F. Ramos encontraron en el despliegue de Ramón Rodríguez el nexo necesario de recuperación de balón y pelotas bien jugadas que fueron el sustento de los 27 goles que lleva anotados su goleador Andy Pando.

Real Garcilaso mostró a lo largo del torneo ser un equipo serio, equilibrado, bien dirigido por el joven técnico Freddy García que planificó muy bien la campaña del año, lo que unido al apoyo dirigencial, representada por la familia Vásquez Granilla viene dando sus frutos en esta primera experiencia en el fútbol profesional .

Si recordamos que hace 3 años el equipo celeste venía jugando la Copa Perú nos damos cuenta que una buena Gestión Deportiva, que planifica sus logros deportivos y económicos, da como resultado cumplir los objetivos programados y ponerse a nivel de los mejores equipos nacionales.

Si la Dirigencia valora estos logros y le da sustento y continuidad a sus programas de mantener un equipo competitivo, saludable económicamente, puede repetir lo conseguido por Cienciano de campeonar en la Copa Sudamericana el año 2003, el logro deportivo más importante conseguido por algún club peruano y crear una Institución que permita que los hinchas puedan asociarse y participar en el desarrollo de la Institución.

Conocemos lo difícil de jugar en ciudades de altura y Garcilaso tiene la ventaja de jugar la Copa América de local en Cusco (3,360 metros de altura), oportunidad que los dirigentes deben considerar al reforzar su equipo el próximo año contratando jugadores de alto nivel técnico y con experiencia en este tipo de eventos.

Actualmente, en el torneo local se encuentra a 1 punto de Sporting Cristal a falta de 2 fechas de finalizar la Liguilla donde debe visitar en Matute a Alianza Lima y posteriormente jugar con la Universidad César Vallejo de local.

Analizando y de acuerdo a los resultados obtenidos durante el año podría sumar 4 puntos (de 6 en disputa) y esperar los resultados de Cristal frente a Universitario y Cienciano en Lima.

La importancia de quedar primero en la Liguilla es la de tener la alternativa de decidir que el primer partido de la final se juegue de local ó de visita y en caso de ir a un tercer partido, escoger la ciudad a jugar. Mucho se especula que de darse el caso Cristal escogería la ciudad de Tacna y Garcilaso se decidiría por Arequipa.

Instituciones serias como Garcilaso son las que van hacer crecer al fútbol peruano dándole competitividad al torneo local, creando nuevas plazas para que nuestros jóvenes valores puedan alternar y a la vez ser una llamada de alerta a antiguos grandes representativos de nuestro fútbol que han perdido la categoría, camino por los que este año estuvieron pasando "U" y Alianza representantes del clásico del fútbol peruano.

T&T meets Cuba in crucial Caribbean Cup qualifier

The stage is set for Trinidad and Tobago’s redemption when it comes to engaging in battle with Cuba on the football field as this country’s senior men’s team will have it all to do on Sunday from 6 p.m. at the Dwight Yorke Stadium if they are to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Caribbean Cup finals and the CONCACAF Gold Cup next year.

The Soca Warriors (1-0-1, four points), will be keeping a close watch on Sunday’s opening match between Suriname and St. Vincent and the Grenadines (0-0-2, two points) as a victory for St Vincent will see T&T needing a win to guarantee progress to the next stage or at least a draw and a better goal difference. A draw in the early encounter will make life easier for T&T against the Cubans (1-0-1, four).

Suriname will face St. Vincent in the first game of the doubleheader at 4 p.m. The top two teams will advance to next month’s Caribbean Cup Finals in Antigua & Barbuda.

But Cuba has proven to be a nemesis for T&T in the regional tournament, beating the Hannibal Najjar coached team, 3-1, in 2003, again winning, 2-1, in the 2005 Digicel Cup and then getting the better of T&T in the Finals in Martinique in 2010 under Russell Latapy.

T&T has arecord of 11 wins to Cuba’s three in all senior international competition and friendly matches.

Instrumental midfielder Densill Theobald, who was rock solid in Friday’s 3-0 win over Suriname, believed his team can pull it off. He said T&T’s 1-0 win over Bahrain on Nov. 16 in 2005 was also on his mind.

“I was aware of it. It’s a significant date in our history. There was no way I would have slept comfortably if lost to Suriname today,” Theobald told the media after the match which was witnessed by sports minister Anil Roberts, TOP leader Ashworth Jack and TTFF president Raymond Tim Kee.

“We have been working very hard as a team and I think we have been improving every game,” Theobald said. “On Sunday our aim is to win the match but we know it’s not going to be easy. Once we do our part, everything else is in God’s hands.

“This current squad is yet to play to its fullest potential. We’ve not played pretty and we’ve made mistakes. We know that come Sunday it’s now or never for us. We need to advance because if we don’t make it to the Gold Cup, I know it’s going to be an even harder road back to some form of success for us.”

Captain Jan Michael Williams had led his team well, urging his teammates to pull out all the stops in this campaign.

“I think by now every player knows that we have to dig deeper than ever,” he said. “The challenge for this squad has been greater than some of the other national teams in recent past. We have had a lot of struggles and I think this has made the boys stronger but in saying that we have to put out the effort on the pitch and grind out results, especially on Sunday.”

Coach Hutson Charles described the performance by defender Aubrey David as “excellent” on Friday. And he wants the rest of the team to take pattern from the Guyana-born player.

“If we can have all the guys on the same page, putting in the same kind of effort and keeping their heads on then we definitely can bring this one home and continue to push on for the rest of the tournament,” Charles said. “This team has ability. Yes some of them are new to the international stage but they must believe in their abilities and demonstrate that on the field of play. That’s all we are asking of them.”

David was buzzing after scoring his first international goal in his maiden full competitive appearance for T&T.

“First of all I am thankful to God for this opportunity. He is in charge and we got this victory after putting in the work with his guidance. I felt good out there. I was comfortable because I’ve worn the national shirt before and I just gave my best out there tonight,” David said.

“Of course I would have loved to have scored for the country of by birth but this is how it turned out and I’m equally grateful to be playing a role in Trinidad and Tobago’s football. Our ambition is to qualify for the Finals and go on to restore some pride and respect in our football.”
