Honduran Liguilla back in action on Wednesday
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras -- With the results in from Friday´s home legs of the play-in matches of the 2012 Apertura Liguilla in Honduras, Real España and Atletico Choloma are now set to hit the road for away dates on Wednesday, with their work cut out against Honduran giants Motagua and Marathon.
On Friday in San Pedro Sula, Motagua continued what has been a stunning run of form since Reynaldo Clavasquin took over the coaching duties late in the season. The former Platense and Motagua defender, alongside assistant coach Amado Guevara, has motivated the Blues to a run of five unbeaten since assuming the reigns in late October, including four wins.Within a month´s time, the Eagles climbed from second to bottom in the Apertura table to a third seed in the playoffs.
The last in that impressive run was a 4-1 dismantling of Real España on Friday, behind goals from Guevara, David Molina, Daniel Tejeda and Nery Medina. That makes Motagua´s task of getting to yet another semifinal that much more manageable heading into Wednesday night´s rematch, though Clavasquin told local press over the weekend that nothing has been accomplished yet.
"We have a lot of confidence, but we´re not taking this for granted," the coach said."We don´t think that with what we did in San Pedro Sula, we´ve won the fixture. We feel very satisfied, and content with the way the team played, but we have 90 minutes left. We can´t say that Motagua has achieved its objective with 90 minutes still to play."
The one-time national team defender said that Motagua, a twelve-time league champion in Honduras, must respect Real España, itself a ten-time champion, despite the obvious hill La Maquina will have to climb at the National Stadium on Wednesday.
"Real España is a rival we have to respect, one with plenty of history, and in football you can see things that seem impossible, but are at the same time possible," said Clavasquin."They´re going to want to end their season in a dignified way.If they can do that, it will depend on us, on what we do in Tegucigalpa."
For his part, Real España head coach Nahum Espinoza was taken aback by his club´s poor performance on Friday, in which it was behind by three goals after only 22 minutes despite playing at home.
"It was a severe blow," the coach told local press in Honduras of Friday night´s loss."The team in terms of animation is pretty low.We tried to speak with the players so that it wouldn´t be so harsh and they can maintain themselves, and take on this game in the best way possible. But we have to be clear, the disadvantage is tremendous."
While Real España tries to make up for lost ground on Wednesday night in the capital, back in San Pedro Sula, Atletico Choloma will be looking to get the result it needs to oust Marathon and make the semifinals for the first time in the club´s short history.
The northern side has been around since 2008, and made it to the top flight just last year, but has shown a consistent ability to fight for results against Honduras´ most historic clubs under the guidance of veteran skipper Edwin Pavon.
Atletico Choloma would advance with a win, or as the visitor, with any tie in which it scores at least one goal.Marathon, for its part, has the advantage of reincorporating six national team players who head coach Manuel Keosseian largely left out of the lineup on Friday, after the group returned from a midweek friendly with Honduras in the U.S.
"On Friday I didn´t use them not because they were tired, but because they hadn´t trained with the group during the week," Keosseian explained to reporters this weekend.
Of the six (José Mendoza, Quiarol Arzú, Mario Berríos, Wilmer Fuentes, Cristian Altamirano and Mitchel Brown), only Marathon captain Berríos played the away leg.
"We´ve only played the first half of this fixture," the Marathon coach said."The second half is still to be played, and we have to work thinking of that."
Regular season leader Olimpia and second place Victoria await the winners of the play-in legs.If Motagua were to hold on to its advantage, the Blues would face Victoria in the semifinal, with the winner between Atletico Choloma and Marathon set to play Olimpia.
If Real España can overcome the three goal disadvantage in Tegucigalpa, La Maquina would get Olimpia, while the winner of the other fixture would face Victoria home and away in a semifinal to be played in Cortes followed by Atlantida.
