Sabella: "Me voy satisfecho"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador del seleccionado argentino, Alejandro Sabella, aseguró que se retiró "satisfecho" por el trabajo realizado por sus dirigidos aunque algo dolido por perder en "los penales" ante Brasil en La Bombonera.

"Perdimos en los penales pero me voy satisfecho porque los muchachos hicieron un gran trabajo. Jugaron una jornada en medio la semana pasada. Fue un partido parejo, disputado y se le ganó a Brasil. Ellos tuvieron más eficiencia en los penales y nos ganaron ahí", consideró el adiestrador.

Durante el encuentro a Sabella se lo vio muy activo dando indicaciones a sus dirigidos, y adujo que sólo tuvo "una práctica" con los jugadores.

"Sólo pude practicar ayer en la tarde con los jugadores. De todos modos con poco trabajo los jugadores demuestran estar a la altura. Estos partidos con Brasil se han definido por cuestiones muy finas. Salvo el partido en Belén del año pasado donde nos ganaron por dos goles, luego siempre fue parejo. El balance es muy bueno", consideró.

Por último y haciendo una evaluación del año del combinado albiceleste, Sabella destacó que desde las matemáticas las conclusiones son "excelentes".

"Desde las matemáticas el balance es excelente y creo que desde el juego es muy bueno. En líneas generales la forma en la que se jugó luego se reflejó en los resultados", resaltó.

El delantero Ignacio Scocco consideró que el seleccionado argentino doméstico hizo "un partido inteligente" al ganarle a Brasil 2-1 al cabo de los 90 minutos jugados en La Bombonera, más allá de que luego se haya perdido la copa del Superclásico de las Américas al caer en el desempate desde el punto del penal.

"Se hizo un partido inteligente, pudimos ganar, que era lo que buscamos y lo más importante. Por mala fortuna en los penales no se pudo dar", evaluó Scocco, autor de los dos goles durante el tiempo regular y quien además acertó su remate a la hora del desempe desde la corta distancia.

Y añadió: "Esta clase de partidos se tienen que ganar. Los penales eran suerte. Me toco convertir en el partido y en los penales, pero perdimos".

En tanto, el zaguero Sebastián Domínguez, de Vëlez, comentó: "Haciendo un balance general en Brasil hicimos un partido inteligente, cedimos la posesión a ellos y no tuvieron ocasiones. Acá intentamos presionar, por momentos lo logramos y estamos contentos por haber ganado, aunque los penales fueron para ellos".

Lanzini esperaba más apoyo del DT

BUENOS AIRES -- El mediocampista creativo de River Plate Manuel Lanzini admitió este miércoles que esperaba un respaldo mayor de parte del entrenador Matías Almeyda, pero también, que rindió menos de lo previsto.

"Son decisiones que ha tomado el entrenador. Me podría haber dado más confianza. En los primeros cuatro partidos fui regular. No desentoné", evaluó Lanzini, en declaraciones para Radio 9.

Más allá de que hubiera deseado un apoyo más firme de parte del director técnico, el juvenil enlace también fue autocrítico y reconoció que su producción resultó inferior a lo pretendido y a su capacidad potencial.

"Debo ser autocrítico también. No puedo decir que la culpa es de tal persona. No he rendido de la manera que se esperaba. Creo que me sacó por eso", asumió quien regreso a River tras jugar un año a préstamo en el Fluminense brasileño.

Eso sí, en su descargo, el futbolista que fue promovido al plantel principal millonario cuando el conductor era Angel Cappa, aclaró que Almeyda cuando lo puso en Primera no lo utilizó como armador, que es el puesto en el que se siente más cómodo.

"Cuando volví (de Brasil), hablé con Almeyda y le pedí usar la diez. Quería que la agarrara y fuera el conductor, que tenía todo para serlo. Se dio otra situación. Jugué en una posición que no es habitual para mí. No es donde yo me encuentro en la cancha. Ojalá me hubiera tocado jugar de enganche", remarcó Lanzini.

De todos modos, Lanzini definió su relación con el azuleño como "normal" y subrayó que en lo personal pretende contribuir para en 2013 "poner a River en lo más alto".

"Quiero triunfar en el club. Hay que sacar la mayor cantidad de puntos. Tratar de hacer una buena pretemporada y poner a River en lo más alto", fijo como meta.

Cruzeiro ´lead race´ for Diego Souza

Belo Horizonte giants Cruzeiro have emerged as leading candidates to sign free-agent midfielder Diego Souza following his return to Brazil after a tumultuous six months in Saudi Arabia.

Diego Souza, 27, has been heavily linked with both Santos and former-side Vasco da Gama, but Minas Gerais news agency Portal Uai report that there is a 95% chance of the midfielder joining Cruzeiro in the new year.

That report has since been denied by agent Eduardo Uram, talking to Lancenet, but the Brazilian super-agent did insist that the player would be interested in talking to A Raposa.

"If Cruzeiro continue to have interest in the player, we will talk with them," Uram told Lance. "They are a great club with a good structure.

"There are no negotiations in process, though, as Diego has only recently returned to Brazil."

It was recently confirmed by the player´s lawyer, Marcos Motta, that Diego Souza should be able to move to a Brazilian club on a free transfer, following the failure of Saudi side Al-Ittihad to pay the midfielder for several months after his July transfer.

Willian José to sign 18-month Santos deal this week

São Paulo striker Willian José should put pen to paper later this week on an eighteen month deal with rivals Santos, after a loan deal was struck with owners Deportivo Maldonado.

Willian José, 20, has fallen out of favour at São Paulo since a free-scoring state championship at the start of the season and has not been offered a new deal by the club.

The player, whose economic rights are owned by agent Gustavo Arribas, and is registered with Uruguayan side Deportivo Maldonado, from where he has been on loan at São Paulo for two seasons.

Santos, who have lost strikers Alan Kardec and Borges in recent months, look set to allow Bill to return from his loan spell to Corinthians in the new year and manager Muricy Ramalho was delighted to have secured a replacement for the new year.

"We want long contracts to form a more successful generation than the last," Muricy told reporters.

Damião: I´d love to reunite with Chelsea star Oscar

Internacional striker Leandro Damião is hoping to possibly reunite with Chelsea star Oscar in the near future, but insists he is currently focused on life in Brazil.

Damião, 23, who was tipped by Liverpool midfielder Lucas to make a big impact in the Premier League, also admitted in the interview that he would be interested in a move to England, but it is the chance to pair-up with Oscar once more that resonates with the striker.

"Oscar is a fantastic player, an absolute craque at Chelsea," Damião told The Elastico. "I had an excellent relationship with him on the field at Internacional and it is true that I would like to be reunited with Oscar.

"We still play together when fielded for Brazil. But, I have a contract to honour at Internacional. Regardless of the fact that Internacional will not play the Copa Libertadores next year, I maintain my focus here at Internacional.

"It is not an incentive to leave. When a European club will come to the fore, we will see."

The Elastico‘s Samindra Kunti recently spoke to long-term Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Leandro Damião, who discussed his career to date, the Brazil national side and his plans for the future – including his desire to be reunited with Chelsea star Oscar. Read the full transcript below!

Your path to being a football player wasn’t straightforward, enlighten us…
Yes, I started at Ibirama and Atletico Tuburao, small Brazilian clubs, and I really had to fight for my place in team. I also switched position from midfield to central-striker. I had set out to become a professional player and always maintained that goal. I think I worked hard and always looked for a way forward. This contributed in a big way to eventually becoming a professional. I made my professional debut agasint Ypiranga in the Campeonato Gaucho. It was the best debut one could have hoped for. The Internacional team had a lot of quality at the time and that obviously helped a lot in scoring two goals and giving two assists.

What role did Luis Fernando Roese have in your development as a player?
O Ortiz – he had a fundamental part in my development as a player. He was a great craque in Futsal – winning the World Cup with Brazil 1992 – and he is still working in the youth development department for Internacional. My early career meant that I was not the finished article when I arrived at Internacional. He invested a lot of time in me, pointing out and teaching me certain aspects of the game that would help on my way to becoming a real professional.

Celso Roth had a policy of rotation during your first season at Internacional in 2010. It must have been difficult to settle down?

I established myself as a professional bit by bit, by working hard. Internacional played the final of the Copa Libertadores that season. It was very emotional as I started on the bench. The coach then gave me a chance by bringing me on in the second half and it was a moment I wanted to seize, rewarding my coach’s faith and so I scored a goal, winning possession on the half-line. It helped Internacional to win the Copa Libertardores and it was a defenitely a memorable moment.

The emotional rollercoaster continued with a call up for Brazil…

Indeed, it was very emotional again. It all went rather quickly. I arrived at Internacional and soon I got the call up. As a small kid I dreamt of wearing the yellow jersey and respresenting my country. Against Scotland, early in 2011, it became reality.

You quickly became a regular for Brazil, ousting Pato as Brazil’s true number 9!

I do not consider Pato a rival. Remember that he played for Internacional as well – he is a great striker and a friend. But it is for Mano Menezes to decide who he starts up front. Do not worry, I am convinced Pato will return to the Seleção. There is no rivalry between us. There is no jealousy within the Seleção. It is a group of players with a strong sense of cohesion.

What is your perception of the Seleção’s evolution under Mano Menezes?

The Seleção has clearly been improving. Not winning the Olympics was bad, but it was very competitive as every opponent provided us with serious resistance. Whether sacrifying Hulk for Alex Sandro after the quarter-final against Honduras was a tactical error, is not for me to judge – you should ask Mano Menezes! My belief is that Brazil is growing as a team.

In recent friendlies against Iraq and Japan, Brazil played a 4-2-4 withour a recognized number 9 – a worry?

That is a matter of positional play and different systems should be used and tried by Brazil. I was slightly injured at the time, although I travelled with the Seleção. But I am sure I will have more opportunities in the future to play for Brazil.

Your performances at Internacional and for Brazil led Ronaldo to saying your were the next craque of Brazilian football. How would you describe your own qualities as a player?

I am grateful for Ronaldo to have said that. He was my childhood hero – I have never seen any player like him since. As to my qualities as a player, I would say I am good with both feet and know how to keep the possession – physical and direct in the box, always looking to score. I am gaining in experience every game, but I still have room for improvement.

Your physicality would make you great for the Premier League. What is the situation looking like right now?

I have a contract until 2015 with Internacional and for the moment, despite all the rumours, I am staying where I am and that is in Porte Alegre with Internacional. The Premier League holds great attraction, of course. I was in England for quite some time during the Olympics and it is a great country with good people. But for the moment I am staying put.

Recently though, you indicated that you’d like to be reunited with Oscar…
Yes, Oscar is a fantastic player, an absolute craque at Chelsea. I had an excellent relationship with him on the field at Internacional and it is true that I would like to be reunited with Oscar. Well for the moment, I am still at Internacional. I think that to be a club great, like Falcão, Dunga or Taffarel for example, I will still need to contribute a little more to this great club in the future!

SANTIAGO DE CHILE -- El técnico argentino Jorge Sampaoli está a un paso de convertirse en el nuevo seleccionador de Chile, hecho que podría concretarse cuando su actual equipo, la Universidad de Chile, termine su participación en el torneo local, informa este jueves la prensa chilena.

Según el diario La Tercera, la Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (ANFP) de Chile ya ha llegado a un acuerdo con el entrenador y la directiva de la U para que el argentino ocupe el puesto que dejó su compatriota Claudio Borghi, que fue despedido la semana pasada.

El rotativo sostiene que Sampaoli y sus ayudantes ganarán alrededor de 1,5 millones de dólares al año más un bono de un millón si la selección se clasifica al Mundial de Brasil 2014.

El acuerdo final, sin embargo, no se haría oficial hasta que la Universidad de Chile termine de jugar el torneo de Clausura. Este miércoles, en la ida de los cuartos de final, empató sin goles ante la Unión Española.

El tema más espinoso en el fichaje de Sampaoli es la cláusula de 1,1 millones de dólares que debe recibir la U por la salida anticipada de su entrenador.

Según la edición digital del diario El Mercurio, la sociedad que administra la U y la ANFP han alcanzado un acuerdo para el pago de la indemnización, aunque todavía no se conocen mayores detalles de la operación.

José Yuraszeck, presidente de la Universidad de Chile, parece resignado a la partida de Sampaoli y ayer señaló que buscarán a su reemplazo en América Latina.

Uno de los entrenadores que más gustan en la U es el argentino Eduardo Berizzo, aunque en las últimas horas ha reafirmado su intención de permanecer en el O´Higgins.

Otros nombres que aparecen en la lista de candidatos son los argentinos Gerardo Martino, del Newell´s, y Julio César Falcioni, del Boca Juniors.

Martino era otra de las alternativas para dirigir al combinado chileno, aunque en los últimos días la opción de Sampaoli ha tomado más fuerza.
