Former Rangers striker Claudio Caniggia hails Seleção star Neymar

Former Argentina striker Claudio Caniggia has described Brazil star Neymar as a "great player", and one that will get even better, but believes this era will belong to his fellow Argentine, Lionel Messi.

Caniggia, 45, became a national hero in Argentina in 1990 when he scored the only goal of the game as Argentina knocked Brazil out of the World Cup finals in Italy, and speaking to reporters at the Soccerex football convention in Rio de Janeiro, the former Glasgow Rangers striker hailed the latest Brazilian sensation.

He said: "Neymar is a great player. Surely, as I always say, Neymar is a player with more imagination in the world.

"He has a lot of imagination, is creative and finds different ways to score and create a move.

"He will surely be one of the best. He is only 20 years old. We have to give him time. Within a few years, he will be one of the best."

And while he thinks the Santos striker will be one of the best, there was no hesitation in Caniggia´s mind as to who is the current best player in the world.

"This is the era of Messi. There will always be many stories of the careers of players like him. How was Pele, Cruyff, Di Stefano, Maradona ... No matter the order of who is the best.

"The moment is Messi´s. I find it very cool that Argentina has three players among the six, seven, best in the world of all time. Maradona, Messi and Di Stefano," he added.

Corinthians head coach Tite thinks there are other coaches more worthy of Seleção job than Pep Guardiola

Corinthians manager Tite is one of the favourites to take over the vacant role as head coach of the Brazilian national team after the sacking of Mano Menezes last week.

And while he would not be drawn on his own future, the coach was happy to discuss the credentials of former Barcelona manager, and another favourite for the role, Pep Guardiola.

Tite, 51, has managed 14 different clubs since he took up coaching in 1990, and says that, while he sees the talent that Guardiola has, he prefers coaches who have built a career.

He told Lancenet!: "Anything is possible for manager´s in clubs and national teams. I see the competence. I see the job he did, the titles and how long he was there. Barcelona are extraordinary.

"But I like to see professionals who have built careers. Speaking of Jose Mourinho, for example. See what he did in Porto, in Chelsea, Inter Milan ... he has a sequence of work. Guardiola has only Barcelona."

The Corinthians boss did not mean to belittle the achievements of the former Barcelona man, but was suggesting that Barcelona have a philosophy that has been in place for a long time.

"And what is the coach if he did not have those players? The essence of football is in the athlete. Not disregarding the professional. But Barcelona has 40 years of histtory in playing the ball, using triangles, playing it short."

Former Brazil defender Carlos Alberto criticises CBF for Menezes sacking
Former Brazil right-back Carlos Alberto has criticised the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) for their sacking of Mano Menezes.

The 50-year-old was released from duty by the organisation only 19 months before the start of the 2014 World Cup, following disappointing performances in the Copa America and London Olympics.

Alberto, who made more than 50 appearances for the national team, is not surprised by the action, but the timing of the decision left him bemused as the Seleção had just beaten their closest rivals.

He said: "I would be more surprised by the sacking of Mano Menezes if I weren´t Brazilian and didn´t know how football works.

"This is nothing jaw-dropping, people had been talking for sometime that he was going to lose his job. It seems to me the time to send him packing was not the best.

"I have the impression the decision was already made by the Brazilian FA but I still don´t understand why the guy loses his job right after beating Argentina away."

The 68-year-old then gave praise to former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, but feels a foreign coach could face problems adapting to the environment with the World Cup just over a year away.

He added: "I am not against having a foreign trainer for the Brazilian national team and Guardiola is certainly a name that could be considered for the job.

"But it would only work if the new coach had more time to work. Had a foreigner been chosen right after the last World Cup, it would have been ok.

"We need to remember that appointing a coach from abroad would represent a big change in terms of methods, from training patterns to tactical philosophy. That cannot be done in one day.

"We also need to take into account that Brazilian players can be quite rebellious and sometimes refuse to accept what the coach is telling them to do. That is why I think it would be difficult to appoint a foreign boss now.

"I am certainly not against it, but I don´t think there is enough time for everybody to adapt to this change. Perhaps it´s an option to consider for the 2018 World Cup. Then, why not? A quality foreign manager could have a lot to give to Brazil."

Aguirre estaría viajando a Barcelona

BARCELONA -- Javier Aguirre estaría a solo unas horas de convertirse en el nuevo entrenador del Espanyol donde milita el mexicano Héctor Moreno, según reportes de la prensa española. El estratega azteca arribaría a Barcelona esta tarde para reunirse con la directiva del equipo y ser el sustituto de Mauricio Pochettino, quien fue cesado por los malos resultados.

El Espanyol, quien se encuentra último en la clasificación de la Liga BBVA con tan solo nueve puntos, habría examinado a otros candidatos, sin embargo, Aguirre, parece haber sido el favorito de la directiva ya que ha entrenado a equipos con problemas de descenso.

Según informa Marca, el representante del entrenador mexicano, Pere Artigas, estaría llegando a la Ciudad Condal para negociar el contrato del ´Vasco´. El mexicano tendría como competencia para hacerse del banquillo a Marcelino García Toral, quien también se perfila como uno de los principales candidatos para ocupar el puesto.

Aguirre ha dirigido en España al Osasuna, Atlético de Madrid y Zaragoza, donde ha dado buenas actuaciones y demostrado que tiene capacidad para dirigir en el país ibérico.

Brazil chiefs rule out Pep Guardiola for Seleção role and hint at Scolari return

President of the Brazilian Football Confederation José Marin has essentially ruled out Pep Guardiola as the next Seleção coach, whilst a colleague hinted that Luiz Felipe Scolari is set to return to the role.

Guardiola has recently been linked with the national team role, after it became vacant due to the sacking of Mano Menezes on Friday.

However, José Marin believes that although the ex- Barça boss is a superb trainer, he might not be suited with taking over the national side.

The 80-year-old said: "I find it hard [to believe] that Brazil´s next coach will be foreign.

"I have the greatest respect for Guardiola, but Brazil has won all of its five World Cups with Brazilian coaches.

"I haven´t talk to any [possible coaches] yet. I´m waiting for the end of Brasileirao. A decision might be made in January, in which case I will talk to reporters in a press conference and announce the new coach.

"The next coach must have an adequate profile to lead Brazil to its top goal, which is winning the 2014 World Cup."

Marin also made it clear that Brazil have moved on with a positive outlook on the future since the dismissal of former trainer Menezes.

"The past is the past; we won´t talk about this again. We must think in the present and the future," he added.

Director Andres Sanchez expressed his disappointment over the release of the coach and revealed that Scolari is set to take over the Seleção.

He said: "I haven´t spoke with the president [Marin] yet, but there´s a possibility that I´ll leave [the board].

"As far as I know, Felipão [Scolari] has agreed terms. I know from credible sources that this happened.

"I´m sad because of all that happened. Do you think that I wanted to be here, explaining the dismissal of our coach? We´re going through a moment of insecurity, we don´t have a coach.

"There´s absolutely nothing that can shake Brazilian football."

Buffarini: "Dependemos de nosotros"

BUENOS AIRES -- El mediocampista de San Lorenzo de Almagro, Julio Buffarini, consideró hoy que su equipo depende de sí mismo para despegar de la zona baja de la tabla de los Promedios y destacó al entrenador, Juan Antonio Pizzi, porque "entró muy bien en el plantel".

"El rival de San Lorenzo es San Lorenzo, si nos lo proponemos salimos de abajo. Después del partido con Boca hablamos entre todos y nos dijimos que no podíamos dejar pasar más puntos. A partir de Godoy cruz comenzaba una nueva etapa para nosotros y por suerte pudimos descontar", indicó el autor de un gol en el triunfo por 2-1 ante Argentinos Juniors, que significó la segunda victoria consecutiva para su equipo.

En declaraciones a distintas emisoras radiales y acerca de los promedios, afirmó: "Del descenso se habla. Yo lo viví en carne propia y no es lindo volver a pasar lo que ya pasamos".

"Tenemos que tener los pies sobre la tierra y sacar la mayor cantidad de puntos posibles, que luego te lleva a pelear y soñar otra cosa. Hoy la prioridad es sumar por el descenso", admitió.

Acerca del siguiente encuentro, el clásico ante Independiente, otro urgido de puntos para escapar de la zona baja de los Promedios, el ex Ferrocarril Oeste y Talleres de Córdoba consideró que San Lorenzo tiene "la obligación" de qudarse con los tres puntos. "Venimos con una buena seguidilla. Vamos a salir a buscar el partido e intentar ganarlo. Gracias a Dios estamos consiguiendo los resultados y agarrando rápido la idea que quiere Pizzi. El grupo es muy bueno y Pizzi entró muy bien en el plantel", remarcó.

Sebastián Sosa: "No bajar la guardia"

BUENOS AIRES -- El arquero de Vélez Sarsfield, Sebastián Sosa, sostuvo que de todos los equipos que pelean por el título en el torneo Inicial el conjunto de Liniers es el único que "depende de sí mismo" y eso le da una pequeña ventaja.

"Somos los que estamos primeros y los únicos que dependen de sí mismos. Es el momento para estar más tranquilos que nunca, pero no bajar la guardia, porque el que viene ante Unión será un partido muy duro", señaló Sosa.

El uruguayo fue una de las figuras claves en la victoria que Vélez consiguió ayer ante All Boys, la cual, sumada al empate de Lanús, le permitió al equipo dirigido por Ricardo Gareca quedar como único puntero a dos fechas de la finalización del torneo.

"Hace tres o cuatro fechas cuando Newell´s también ligaba le decían ´la suerte del campeón´. Así que ojalá sea suerte y que después del próximo partido, que sea suerte de campeón", agregó.

Cuando se le preguntó por el significado del empate que Lanús, que hasta ayer compartía la punta con Vélez, alcanzó con Estudiantes de La Plata, Sosa indicó que "después de finalizado el encuentro nuestro, Lanús empató y eso es un envión anímico muy importante de cara al partido que viene".

River pasó de los sueños a la realidad

BUENOS AIRES -- A lo largo de la temporada venimos marcando los vaivenes futbolísticos de los cuales es presa River. Desde hace ya muchas fechas que el plantel Millonario debió configurar de manera diferente su temporada.

Aquel sueño inicial de realizar una campaña como en los viejos tiempos para hacer olvidar el traumático paso por la B Nacional, nunca dejó de tener categoría de ilusión. La idea jamás pudo ganarse un sitio en la convicción del hincha.

Por eso, tras los primeros partidos, el objetivo comenzó a ser zafar del descenso, juntar los puntos necesarios para que River no volviese a pasar sobresaltos en la tabla tan temida.

La cifra habitual para escaparle a dicha sombra es de 50, es decir, 25 por campeonato. Luego se instalaron los 30, algo que los protagonistas desmienten haberse puesto como meta, pero más allá de este embrollo numérico lo que se pretende es señalar que, a dos fechas de la culminación del Torneo Inicial, el equipo de Núñez tuvo que ir modificando sus aspiraciones.

Con objetivos nimios, algo que viene ocurriendo en los últimos tiempos. No porque se lo impongan como meta en el comienzo de la temporada, pero sí porque sus propias limitaciones lo empujan a ese sitio de tibieza inquietante.

Contra Independiente, River exhibió una involución. No jugó bien. Y quedó como saldo preocupante que fue claramente dominado por su rival, algo que hasta ahora sólo le había sucedido con Vélez, hoy a un paso de ser campeón.

Esta vez le ocurrió con un equipo que no viene teniendo una buena temporada, tanto es así que se encuentra muy complicado con el tema del descenso.

Las lesiones condicionaron (y condicionan) a Matías Almeyda a la hora de armar el equipo, principalmente en la defensa. Que fue el sector de la cancha que peor se desempeñó el pasado fin de semana. Una muy mala labor en conjunto que no terminó en derrota sólo por esas cosas que tiene el fútbol, que a veces te da y otras te quita.

Hasta Leonardo Ponzio, figura indiscutible y necesaria, lleva dos presentaciones sin poder repetir aquellas estupendas actuaciones. Entró en el desconcierto general. Y los delanteros siguen con la pólvora mojada. De cara a lo que se viene, River necesita urgente de refuerzos.

En realidad necesita urgente de Andrés D´Alessandro. No de otro. Alguien que puede manejar al equipo, inyectarle fútbol, optimismo, que conseguiría absorber las presiones que hoy tanto trauman al ochenta por ciento del equipo. De una vez por todos la dirigencia deberá hacer el gran esfuerzo económico. Al cual nadie, ni la oposición, que hoy es tan descarnada, le pondría reparos.

Y la segunda incorporación que le permite efectuar el reglamento tendrá que ser de la misma jerarquía. Inclusive los directivos no pueden dejar de comenzar la gestión para que en la AFA les gestionen un pedido de excepción, como efectuó Argentinos (y le fue concedido) y que ahora formalizó Independiente, para poder incorporar a raíz de todos los lesionados que posee sin la diferenciación de que debe ser un futbolista libre.

River necesita reforzarse porque el plantel actual no tiene la jerarquía que muchos creen, y para las grandes campañas se necesitan futbolistas que vayan en sintonía con las aspiraciones. Deberán aprender del pasado reciente y no volver a subestimar momentos ni situaciones, como ocurrió en el semestre previo a que se consume la pérdida de categoría. La tan anhelada gran campaña no puede (ni debe) demorarse.
