Former Brazil star Paulo Cesar slams Scolari appointment

Brazil legend Paulo Cesar has slammed the CBF for appointing Luiz Felipe Scolari as Brazil boss, claiming Pep Guardiola should have got the job.

Cesar, who was a member of the 1970 World Cup winning squad, feels Scolari has not proved himself worthy of the job after failed stints at Chelsea and Palmeiras.

"We have now an ugly way of playing with figures of between 50-to-100 wrong passes on average per match. Everything is going wrong.

"Brasileiro Serie A, Brasileiro Serie B, Brasileiro Serie C, clubs academies, and so on. When you spend a month reviewing the national team situation and then the coach is fired you say, thank God.

"But then they hire a coach who is so old, he is not up to date in terms of tactics. He was terrible at Palmeiras and the club was relegated this season because of him.

"He´s won nothing in the last few years. He didn´t win anything as coach of Portugal. He saw them lose to Greece 2-0, playing the Euro 2004 final in Lisbon.

"Then he was hired by Chelsea and a couple of months after ended up fired. Then he went to Uzbekistan. And now he´s back because of what he achieved in 2002? So why not to hire Zagallo? He won the World Cup four times. We had a great opportunity for change."

Cesar had backed former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola for the job: "It´s been a year now that I´ve been saying Guardiola was the right man for the job. He could had changed the philosophy of our football.

"To get things back to the way it was originally, playing the real beautiful game with Guardiola.

Ronaldinho: Atlético fans made me stay

Atlético Mineiro´s Ronaldinho Gaúcho says the fans made him decide to stay amd sign a new one year contract at the club.

The former Seleção star says the passion of the supporters struck him from day one as he agreed the contract with club president Alexandre Kalil.

Ronaldinho told reporters: "Since the day I arrived at this club I have been made to feel so welcome.

"I have a great relationship with everybody; the president, my teammates, the coaching staff but most of all the fans, who have really won my affection. All of those factors convinced me to stay."

The announcement ends speculation of a move to rivals Fluminense, who pipped Atlético to the Brasileirão title.

The former Ballon D´Or winner scored nine times and assisted for a further 11 goals this season and was also named in the the league´s Team of the Year.

River: Chapa Zapata hará 3 cambios

BUENOS AIRES -- Gustavo Zapata, el director técnico interino de River hasta que Ramón Díaz asuma la próxima semana, realizará tres cambios en el equipo que jugará el domingo ante Lanús, con las presencias de Marcelo Barovero, Luciano Abecasis y Ariel Rojas entre los titulares.

Así, los once para jugar el domingo a las 17 en el Monumental serán: Barovero; Abecasis, Gabriel Mercado, Jonathan Bottinelli, Diego Martínez; Carlos Sánchez, Leonardo Ponzio, Ezequiel Cirigliano, Rojas; Rodrigo Mora y Rogelio Funes Mori.

Al igual que el jueves, Zapata probó hoy con un equipo en el que hubo tres cambios en relación con el que viene de igualar 2-2 ante Independiente: Barovero por Daniel Vega en el arco, Abecasis por el suspendido Leandro González Pirez en la defensa y Rojas por Daniel Villalba en el mediocampo.

River suma 23 puntos en el Torneo Inicial, y marcha en la 9º posición.
Lanús, su rival, marcha 2º, con 33 unidades, y con chances de ser campeón.

Ramón Díaz, presentado en River


El presidente bromeó: "Mirá que no vas a jugar"...

- "No, ya no", contestó Ramón.

"Vamos a dar lo máximo para que este River funcione", prometió el riojano, agradeciéndole al dirigente esta oportunidad de volver al club.

Y dedicó sus primeras palabras a su antecesor en el cargo: " Nunca se olviden de Almeyda porque le ha dado mucho a este club".

"Hace mucho tiempo quería volver, esto es muy importante para mí y quiero agradecerte (a Passarella) por esta oportunidad", continuó Díaz, quien sonó varias veces como candidato, pero hace 10 años que no dirige a River.

Sobre el acuerdo para su regreso, el DT coincidió con Passarella y aseguró que fue "todo muy rápido. Yo solo arreglé lo deportivo, Castellanos (su representante) se encargó de lo económico".

Y agregó: "Todos saben por qué no volví al club antes, y más cuando estaban (José María) Aguilar e (Mario) Israel", quienes lo echaron en su último ciclo en el 2002.

Sobre sus objetivos en este regreso, sentenció: "Espero conseguir el equipo ganador que todos queremos". "Yo quería volver al Club, siempre lo expresé, todos ustedes lo saben".

"Nosotros primero queremos armar un equipo para que pelee el campeonato. Y primero que juegue bien, para poder pelearlo", se explayó.

Y fue un poco más allá: "Los tiempos cambian pero River sigue siendo el más grande de todo el país. Quiero pelear campeonatos y jugar bien".

Ramón Díaz reiteró en varias oportunidades su idea de conseguir refuerzos de categoría -River podría incorporar tres este verano-. "Ya hay algunos pibes (jugadores)que me han llamado y que quieren venir, porque saben que River es un club grande y algunos ya lo conocen". No dio nombres, pero sí admitió su interés por Andrés D´Alessandro y Martín Demichelis.

"Varios de los que dirigí en algún momento ya me llamaron.Tengo un jugador en mente que no ha jugado en River, a ver si lo podemos convencer", adelantó pero manteniendo el misterio. No obstante, aclaró que las llegadas dependerán de las ganas de los jugadores.

"Vamos a tratar a todos los jugadores de la misma manera, vamos a evaluarlos y después decidir el plantel para el año que viene", señaló como sus primeros pasos en este regreso.

Sobre si cree que esta vuelta puede ser utilizada políticamente en el club (Passarella lo prometió en su campaña presidencial), al DT no le preocupa. "En la parte política no nos vamos a meter, la gente es muy importante no sólo el socio, sino el hincha también".

"Yo soy una soldado del Club Atlético River Plate", contestó cuando le preguntaron por el ciclo anterior donde Almeyda se había nombrado "soldado de Passarella". El riojano agradeció de nuevo la oportunidad al presidente, pero se puso a servicio de la institución por sobre los nombres.

"Le pedimos a la gente que nos apoye, es muy importante para el club y el equipo", reiteró el DT, que espera un gran recibimiento en el Monumental, donde el domingo acompañará al equipo, pero no lo dirigirá. En el banco estará Gustavo Zapata.

Sobre sus 10 años fuera del club, y consultado si cree que este es su momento, Díaz comentó algo risueño:"Yo si hubiera sido Passarella, me hubiera llamado antes. Cuando asumió".

"No guardo rencor (a la gestión que lo echó). Pero si lo sufrí estando fuera. Lo que no va cambiar nadie es que soy el entrenador más grande en la historia de River", recalcó.

No obstante, ya piensa en darle una idea a su equipo: "Vamos a buscar un equipo agresivo, que siempre sea protagonista, inclusive en estos dos últimos partidos".

Consultado sobre cómo vivió del descenso, dijo que lo sufrió como todos los hinchas de River, pero remarcó que "eso ya quedó atrás". Y volvió a elogiar el papel de su antecesor: "Almeyda tuvo mucho coraje, lo tengo que felicitar. Nadie se va a olvidar que lo trajo de nuevo a la A".

Y preguntado si hubiese dirigirdo a River en la B Nacional, afirmó: "Si me hubiera llamado, sí". Además, cree que con él, River "por supuesto que no se hubiera ido al descenso".

Botafogo to hand Sassá debut Brasileirão start


Botafogo are set to hand a debut Brasileirão start to 18-year-old centre-forward Sassá this weekend, as they prepare to take on Flamengo in the final round of the Brazilian Championship.

With Elkeson in the process of completing a €6 million move to China, the club do not want to risk injuring the player, while fellow teenager Bruno Mendes has trained separately from the squad while a legal dispute over his potential permanent transfer to Botafogo is resolved.

Sassá has recently been in fine form for Botafogo´s Under-20 side, scoring three times in the two-legged final of the Torneio Octávio Pinto Guimarães last week, in a narrow defeat to Flamengo.

The Under-20 international also scored three-goals in the prestigious Copa São Paulo youth tournament at the start of the year and was the club´s joint top-scorer in the Under-20 state championships with eight goals.

Botafogo will also be without the suspended Jefferson, Dória, Antônio Carlos and Andrezinho for the encounter, leaving the team light in defence, while it has already been confirmed that first-choice left-back Marcio Azevedo will not start after 59 appearances already this year.

Wallace wants Copa Libertadores win before Chelsea move


Fluminense full-back Wallace is hoping to secure a Copa Libertadores title with the club before his scheduled €8.6 million move to Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Wallace, 18, has already secured a state championship and Brasileirão title in his 18 months at first-team level and hopes that he can add a continental crown before heading for Europe.

The player had confirmed on Thursday that the deal had been completed, after initial reports broke earlier in the month but were not corroborated by either party.

“I was very happy when I received the Chelsea news,” the right-back told Globo Esporte. My agent called me and told me that I would sign the contract—when I saw the pile of paper I was sure it was true!

“I always believed that one day I would go to Chelsea, who already owned 40% of my economic rights after the signing of Deco. But, I had to work hard to achieve this dream.

“I participated in the conquest of two major titles and, God willing, next year we will win the Libertadores. If we do, then I can leave Fluminense happy.”

Wallace will first take part in the Under-20 South American championship next January, having been named in the provisional Brazil squad earlier this week, before setting his mind to challenges ahead with Fluminense.

Scolari demands tougher opponents for Brazil


New Brazil manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has told reporters that he intends to speak with UAE-based company International Sports Events (ISE) to ensure that Brazil face strong opponents ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

ISE signed a contract with former CBF chief Ricardo Teixeira in November 2011 which allows them to arrange the Seleção´s fixture list, however Felipão admits he is not happy with the arrangement.

The new National Team head coach told his first press conference: "It´s not that we can´t choose [the opponent]. But, there is a probably a clause with the company that controls this area and, where possible, we will ask that they help find us strong opponents. It´s important."

Since the Olympic Games this summer, Brazil have been criticised for not always facing challenging opponents, with games against South Africa, China and Iraq coming under the microscope.

In the past eighteen months, Brazil have also faced Gabon and Egypt in encounters they were never expected to lose, with new CBF chief Jose Marin admitting that his organisation no longer controlled who the side would be facing.

In 2013, however, Brazil have already lined up home and away fixtures with England, as well as an encounter with France, all ahead of the Confederations Cup in June.

Boca: Rolando Schiavi no hizo fútbol


BUENOS AIRES -- El zaguero Rolando Schiavi, capitán de Boca Juniors, no participó de la práctica de fútbol que el equipo xeneize realizó con miras al partido del domingo próximo frente a Arsenal de Sarandí, al que visitará por la 18va. y anteúltima fecha del torneo Inicial de fútbol.

De todas maneras, habrá que esperar qué sucedió con Schiavi, por si sufrió alguna lesión o simplemente no participó de la práctica de fútbol por precaución, debido al mal estado del campo de juego por la lluvia que signó la jornada en la Capital Federal.

Boca (30 puntos), que comparte la tercera posición con Belgrano y Newell`s a cinco del líder Vélez, visitará al equipo de Sarandí (25) el próximo domingo desde las 20.15, con el arbitraje de Silvio Trucco.
