San Lorenzo: no vendrá Coloccini

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente de San Lorenzo descartó al zaguero central, Fabricio Coloccini, como posible refuerzo para el plantel que conduce Juan Antonio Pizzi.

Matías Lammens, máximo directivo del equipo de Boedo, manifestó que la llegada del defensor del Newcastle de la Premier League de Inglaterra es "muy complicada" para reforzar el equipo para el Torneo Final.

"Es muy complicado que Fabricio Coloccini venga a jugar, por ahora, a San Lorenzo", indicó el mandamás del club en declaraciones a Radio La Red.

"Está muy difícil, pero nos encantaría", agregó.

Por otra parte, el presidente de San Lorenzo se refirió a la llegada de Juan Antonio Pizzi y dijo que "le dio paz al equipo".

Romagnoli: "Puede ser campeón"

BUENOS AIRES -- Leandro Romagnoli destacó en "La Oral Deportiva Extra" la levantada futbolística de San Lorenzo, pero remarcó que todavía tienen que "sacar muchos puntos" y aseguró que "este equipo puede ser campeón".

Mientras se recupera de una grave lesión de rodilla, el mediocampista destacó en su charla con ESPN Radio en Rivadavia que le sacaron varios puntos a Independiente, pero recordó: "Estamos ahí abajo. No estamos de mitad de tabla para arriba, estamos pendientes de la situación del promedio. El semestre que viene va a ser fundamental. Tenemos que hacer una buena pretemporada y la expectativa es pelear por el campeonato. Tenemos que sacar muchos puntos"

Y se aninó a augurar que "este equipo puede ser campeón. Tiene grandes jugadores". Cree que la clave no es tener muchas figuras sino generar "un equipo compacto" y una buena pretemporada para pelear arriba.

En el día a día, Romagnoli contó que habla mucho con sus compañeros sobre Juan Antonio Pizzi. "Llega con las pocas palabras que dice y eso es muy importante para el jugador. El estilo de juego también hace bien y favorece al equipo", detalló.

"Tuve algunas conversaciones con el técnico, pero muy poco porque no entreno junto al resto del equipo. Sus colaboradores también trabajan mucho".

Pero la levantada del equipo no fue sólo desde lo futbolístico, Romagnoli ve que "el club está bien" y eso le da tranquilidad al plantel para trabajar. "Antes siempre había un problema diferente. Para el jugardor es muy bueno todo este cambio, venís de otra manera. Antes todo era problemas, ahora cambió muchísimo".

"Sé que había muchos problemas económicos y eso provocaba un gran desgaste. Estaba mal el club y también el quipo, era todo un caos", aseguró Pipi, quien aceptó que mantuvo una buena relación con Carlos Abdo, el anterior presidente, aunque reconoció: "No supieron manejar al club en lo económico. Hicieron todo lo posible para sacarlo adelante, pero no pudieron".

"La llegada de (Marcelo) Tinelli con (Matías) Lamens fue muy importante para el club. Lo que dije en su momento por el contrato que tenía Tinelli conmigo ya pasó. Ya aclaramos los tantos y tenemos una buena relación".

Romagnoli también se refirió al anterior entrenador, Ricardo Caruso Lombardi. Aseguró que tenía "buena relación", más allá de los comentarios porque lo dejaba en el banco.

"Tiene dos caras la actuación de Ricardo en el club. La salvación del descenso es una. Con los referentes hablaba siempre, pero los resultados no se daban dentro del campo. Había muchos empates. Llegó un momento que no se soportó más la situación y tuvo que dar un paso al costado. Pero la relación con los referentes y todo el plantel era buena", señaló.

También reveló que el plantel le recomendaba al DT no exponerse tanto anten la prensa, pero no su carácter lo llevaba a salir siempre al choque. "Los referentes le decíamos a Caruso que no se tenía que exponer mucho con la prensa. Los que estamos hace mucho sabemos como es el periodismo, pero Ricardo es así. Le pedíamos que este más tranquilo y se enfoque mas en el equipo. Pero esa es su manera de ser y no la va a cambiar. Pero tendría que estar un poco mas tranquilo".

TRES TEMAS APARTE

•Ramón Díaz: "Volvió a donde él quería. Salió campeón con San Lorenzo, la gente lo quiere, pero su idea fue siempre estar en River. Es hincha del club la gente lo quiere. Ojalá le vaya bien, menos contra San Lorenzo. Contra nosotros que pierda, pero después quiero que le vaya bien".

• Lionel Messi: "Es un gran jugador, no creo que vaya a haber otro como él. Veo todos los partidos que puedo. Todos los años sorprende y supera sus propios records. No tiene techo".

•Cristiano Ronaldo: "Es muy bueno, pero Messi lo supera ampliamente. Le saca la diferencia con el pique corto y la pelota al pie. Por eso, primero viene Messi y duespués, Cristiano. En tercer lugar pondría a Iniesta Y Xavi. Son los que hacen jugar a Messi, muy buenos".

Sobre su presente, Romagnoli le contó a ESPN Radio que se está recuperando "con tranquilidad", aunque sabe que la rehabilitación de la rotura de ligamentos cruzados de rodilla demanda un mínimo de seis meses (se lesionó en agosto).

"Quiero tratar de volver cuanto antes. Pero tengo que estar tranquilo porque uno se desesperar si no, por suerte tengo a Pizzi, sus ayudantes y mis compañeros que me apoyan y eso es fundamental".

De cara al futuro, Romagnoli aseguró: "Mi idea es retirarme en San Lorenzo. Tengo lesiones, pero sigo adelante y entrenando para jugar. Si veo que ya no puedo más, lo pienso y me retiro. Tengo 31 años y todavía tengo unos años para jugar".

Además, dijo que la posición que le gusta es como enganche, pero admitió que jugará como volante por los costados si es necesario y destacó: "Lo que me puso muy contento es que con Alan Ruiz el equipo tomó otro vuelo y le dio aire futbolístico".

"Quiero jugar unos años mas y luego me gustaría ser técnico. Estoy haciendo el curso y me faltan 6 meses para terminarlo".

Finalmente, afirmó que la vuelta a Boedo "es muy importante". "Todos estamos esperando que se haga la cancha y ojalá pueda jugar ahí algún día".

Carlos Arano: "Estoy muy dolido"

BUENOS AIRES -- El lateral izquierdo Carlos Arano, al que hoy el técnico Ramón Díaz le anunció que no lo tendrá en cuenta para el próximo semestre y por lo tanto se alejará de River Plate, confesó que no "pensaba" irse del club de Núñez "porque en el plantel no hay jugadores" en su puesto.

"La verdad es que pensaba que iba a seguir, ya que en el plantel no hay jugadores en mi puesto", reconoció Arano en una entrevista con el programa radial Deportivo Télam.

"Ramón me comunicó que me tenía que ir después de la práctica de esta mañana y la verdad es que estoy dolido, porque nadie se quiere alejar de un equipo grande", admitió.

"Chiche" aceptó que "dentro de lo malo, al menos es bueno que esto se produzca ahora, antes de la pretemporada, para poder buscar otro club".

"Díaz me habló de frente y como balance de lo que hice en la institución debo ser autocrítico y reconocer que después de un buen primer campeonato, ya en la B Nacional me lesioné y perdí continuidad", describió.

"Y sinceramente nunca me importó demasiado el hecho de poder haber quedado marcado por el descenso, ya que fui uno de los pocos de ese plantel que continuó jugando en la B Nacional y la gente no me maltrató", apuntó.

El ex defensor de Racing Club y el Huracán de Angel Cappa destacó que con "Matías Almeyda las cosas se hablaron y no hubo problemas. Con él no jugué, pero el tema lo charlamos. Físicamente estoy bien porque jugué las últimas siete fechas del campeonato de reserva".

"Lo que debo hacer ahora es negociar mi salida con la dirigencia, ya que mi contrato vence en junio del año que viene y el pase es mío. No tengo representante y los temas legales los manejo con mi abogado, pero de lo que sí entiendo es de números", advirtió.

"Por lo pronto ya recibí ofertas de equipos de primera y también de la B Nacional. Tengo 32 años y pienso seguir jugando hasta los 37 o 38, para después iniciar la carrera de entrenador. De hecho en estos días me estoy recibiendo de director técnico", indicó.

Sobre la intempestiva salida de Almeyda aceptó que lo "sorprendió. No esperábamos que se fuera así, a dos fechas del final. Claro que no sabíamos que iba a pasar a fin de año. Pero si el técnico debió irse fue porque los jugadores no rindieron".

"En cuanto a los técnicos que más me marcaron en mi carrera, uno fue Cappa, el otro Héctor Cúper, que me dirigió en el Aris Salónica, de Grecia, y Diego Simeone, que era mi compañero un día y al siguiente mi entrenador en Racing", puntualizó.

"Y entre los que juegan o jugaron en mi puesto puedo mencionar a dos ex River a los que siempre admiré como (Juan Pablo) Sorín y (Diego) Placente, que tiene mucha técnica y nunca se pone nervioso", precisó.

Finalmente Arano aseguró que le "encantaría volver a Huracán", que su estadía en River representó "un paso grande" en su carrera y que si no aparecen laterales en el fútbol argentino "es simplemente porque los chicos ya no se van a probar para esas posiciones en las divisiones inferiores".

L. Vella: "Triste, no me lo esperaba"

BUENOS AIRES -- El defensor de River, Luciano Vella, afirmó que se sintió "triste", cuando el entrenador Ramón Díaz le comunicó que no será parte de su proyecto futbolístico de cara a la próxima temporada.

"Es una noticia que me pone triste, pero el fútbol es así. Aunque no me la esperaba", apuntó el ex defensor de Newell`s Old Boys (2002-2006 y 2010-2011) e Independiente (2009-2010), en diálogo con radio Cooperativa.

Vella, de 31 años, es uno de los cuatro jugadores, junto a Carlos Arano, Daniel Vega y Andrés Ríos, que no será tenido en cuenta por el actual DT de River Plate para el próximo campeonato.

En ese sentido, el lateral por la derecha destacó el gesto de Ramón Díaz, a pesar de la decisión: "me lo dijo en la cara de manera simple y habla muy bien de él".

A su vez, indicó que aún le quedan 6 meses de contrato con el club de Núñez y deberá resolver su futuro: "Es difícil conseguir un equipo porque son 2 incorporaciones".

En tanto, señaló que su desempeño como lateral por el sector izquierdo en la derrota ante Belgrano de Córdoba por la primera fecha del torneo Inicial, en el retorno de River Plate a la primera división del fútbol argentino, lo perjudicó.

"El partido que jugué como lateral por izquierda contra Belgrano me condenó, no tuve una buena actuación y lo pagué caro", expresó.

Luciano Vella, campeón con Newell`s en el torneo Apertura 2004, se incorporó a River Plate para la temporada 2011/2012, cuando la institución disputó el torneo de la B Nacional, donde obtuvo el título y el ascenso a Primera División.

Una vez finalizado el torneo Inicial, Vella buscará otro club para continuar su carrera futbolística.

Central American Weekend Preview

The finals are set to get underway in domestic action in Nicaragua and Honduras, while finalists will be decided this weekend in Guatemala, Costa Rica and El Salvador.

NICARAGUA

The finals begin in Nicaragua, as three-time defending champion Real Esteli visits the capital on Sunday to take on familiar foe Walter Ferretti, the last team to win the Nicaraguan title before the Tren del Norte began its run in 2011.

There is some precedent for this finals match-up, most recently the 2011 Apertura. A year ago, Walter Ferretti was on the brink of a title, when a second half stoppage-time goal by Luis Gonzalez instead gave a second straight championship to Real Esteli.


HONDURAS

Olimpia and Victoria, the two top clubs of the Apertura 2012, meet in the first leg of the final on Saturday, with both teams hoping to gain an early advantage. The clubs are led by two of the top scorers of the Honduran tournament -- Olimpia´s Roger Rojas leads the way with nine goals, while Colombian Mauricio Copete (Victoria´s all-time leading scorer), has seven, good for third this season.

These two teams have met in two previous finals, most recently in 2006, when they disputed a hard-fought series from which Olimpia eventually prevailed a 4-3 aggregate win. The previous encounter came in 1995, when the team from La Ceiba made history by capturing the only title in its 77-year history.

GUATEMALA

Comunicaciones and Malacateco played to a scoreless tie in a downpour on Wednesday afternoon, and now head back to the capital for a Saturday evening showdown at the Estadio Cementos Progreso.

The Cremas led the regular season table, and need only a tie to advance. But the home side is well aware of the danger posed in a battle of Costa Rican coaches, as Mauricio Wright´s Malacateco side knocked off defending champion Xelaju in the opening playoff round.

In the other semifinal, played in Morales, Heredia and Municipal tied 1-1 in the first leg. The home side opened the scoring in the 26th minute through Uruguayan Andres Marquez, but Municipal´s Santiago Lopez tied matters in the second half, to send the series back to the capital all level ahead of Sunday´s rematch.


EL SALVADOR

Finalists will be determined this weekend in El Salvador, as defending champion Aguila looks to overcome a deficit on the road, while FAS and Alianza resolve matters in San Salvador.

In the first legs played last weekend, FAS and Alianza played to a 1-1 tie in their opening match in Santa Ana, while Isidro Metapan went on the road to shock the defending champs, 2-1. The game in Metapan is scheduled for Saturday night, while the match in San Salvador will take place Sunday afternoon.

COSTA RICA

In the two versus three semifinal series, Herediano and Saprissa head back to the capital tied at one. The Purple Monster and defending champion Herediano, a 2012/13 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinalist, face off again on Monday afternoon for a spot in the final.

In the other tie, Limon will need to overcome a one goal deficit when it travels to Alajuelense on Sunday, after falling by the minimum difference to La Liga in the opener. In a match played Wednesday night at the National Stadium, Alajuelense came out on top on a 36th minute goal from Johnny Acosta.

Comunicaciones, Gonzalez target Guatemalan title

GUATEMALA CITY - As far as the standings go, there´s little doubt that Comunicaciones has been the best team in Guatemala in 2012, coming out on top of the table in both tournaments played this year. But as long as the proud club has no trophy to show for that accomplishment, Cremas´ fans and the organization as a whole won´t rest easy.

Comunicaciones´ Costa Rican head coach, Ronald Gonzalez, admits as much. The former Tico international, who defended the back line for Cremas from 1998 to 2001, took charge of the club at the close of 2011. In his two tournaments at the helm, the ex-Costa Rican U-20 chief has produced consistently impressive results, with the notable exception of a semifinal setback in the Clausura 2012 to archrival Municipal.

This time around, though, the former Costa Rican captain, capped 65 times for his country, isn´t prepared to fall back on a spectacular regular season, in which the Cremas banked an impressive 50 points from 22 matches, leaving the competition in the rearview mirror with ease. Instead, the coach and his team know that even such a feat will be meaningless if they can´t lift the Apertura trophy later this month.

"There´s no other explanation or reason, we have to be champions," Gonzalez told CONCACAF.com in an exclusive interview. "The fans aren´t going to remember me or my team as the one that got 50 points in a season, never. And total we have 96 in two tournaments, which is a lot, but if we don´t have the cup and the title, that means nothing."

To realize that challenge, Comunicaciones will have to get through three playoff rounds, after the Liga Mayor expanded the post season to eight teams for this tournament. Remembering the reverse suffered at the hands of Municipal in May, Gonzalez recognizes that teams play with a different intensity in the Liguilla.

"The rivals mark you differently, there´s another level, another type of attention, another type of demand, it´s an elimination match," the coach said. "It´s not a game in the fifth round of the regular season, but rather a semifinal, and that weighs on you. We have to have the maturity to manage that as well."

Comunicaciones passed the initial test, in the quarterfinals against Marquense, a team with a strong tradition that finished eighth in the regular season, but still posed a stiff challenge for the leaders in the opening round of the playoffs.

Under the watchful gaze of Gonzalez, the Cremas came back after falling behind 2-0 early, to tie the away match on the road. Comunicaciones then overcame the team from San Marcos, 3-0, at home last Saturday at the Estadio Cementos Progreso, to advance once again to the semifinal round.

Gonzalez attributes the quarterfinal victory to a wholly team effort, something which is becoming a hallmark of this Comunicaciones squad.

"What I told them at half time is that we depend not on a good 20 minutes, or a half," said the Costa Rican skipper. "We fall back on our long term work. Nothing that´s happened here has been coincidence. They´ve been consistent, everyone has chipped in, and this team has played without nine, ten starters, when we´ve sent players out to the national team. Thinking that everyone on the team is important is one of our strong points."

The going wasn´t easy against Marquense, as the tie was still deadlocked in the 73rd minute of the second match, when defender Carlos Castrillo scored to send the Cremas on their way to the semifinals.

There were moments, on Saturday and during the course of the long, successful season, when the fans lost patience with their team and its coach, and began to whistle or boo Gonzalez. But the Costa Rican recognizes that such frustration is normal among fans everywhere, no matter how well the season might be going.

"I´d love to win the title today, but we still have a ways to go," Gonzalez said. "Football brings out emotions, and it´s a way for people to get their tension out. In one moment they can be whistling and the next, singing ´ole.´ One moment they can be yelling at a player for missing a goal and the next he puts it in the angle, and everyone celebrates. It´s a roller coaster of emotions that with the years, you learn to manage, and that the players game by game learn to manage better."

With the club now in the semifinals, the pressure is only building on the Costa Rican and his team, due to Comunicaciones´ constant role as favorite, and the expectation of victory and even domination that comes with each match.

But even if Gonzalez admits to feeling that pressure, the coach says that both he and his team need to manage it wisely, since it´s something he characterizes as completely normal in the club game at the highest levels. For the past Costa Rican international captain, who scored for his country as a 19-year-old at the World Cup Italy 1990, these experiences at the helm of Comunicaciones leave him with important lessons as he grows as a coach.

"They´re very hard lessons," Gonzalez said. "I´ve been on that bench, and I´ve been cheered, and I´ve been booed. It´s a constant not only for me, but for the famous coaches in the world. Mourinho has that pressure week to week, when he´s eleven or twelve points behind his archrival. In Italy there´s pressure, in Argentina. You have to come through it and let it forge your character, and try to transmit that to the players."

The pressure will continue to build on Gonzalez for the time being, as he and his team seek the Cremas´ 25th title, second only to Municipal in the history of the Guatemalan league.

On Wednesday, in a downpour in San Marcos, the Cremas played to a scoreless tie with Malacateco in the away leg of the semifinals. The return match will be played Saturday at the Estadio Cementos Progreso, with Gonzalez´s team in its usual role as favorite, and all the expectations that generates.

The Grand Final in Guatemala is set for next week, with a possible renewal of hostilities between the Cremas and the Rojos, the most historic rivalry in Guatemalan football. And while it would represent a certain level of accomplishment for most clubs just to make it to a final, Gonzalez knows that given the history of Club de Futbol Comunicaciones, the only result that will serve him when all is said and done is to lift the cup at the conclusion of the Apertura 2012.

Honduras U17s impress in UNCAF win

SAN MIGUEL PETAPA, Guatemala - Central American qualifying for the finals of the 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship commenced Friday with an eventful day Estadio Julio Armando Cobar.

Honduras cruised to a convincing victory 5-2 over El Salvador, while host Guatemala could manage only a scoreless tie with a determined Nicaraguan side.

In the opening match, the Catrachos got off to a flying start in just the fifth minute, when midfielder Brayan Velasquez penetrated the left side of the Salvadoran defense and placed a shot past goalkeeper Cesar Jerez and into the back of the net.

El Salvador managed to settle in and soon equalized through midfielder Julio Amaya (23´), whose shot from distance rippled the back of the Honduran net.

Just when it looked as if the game would be even at the break, El Salvador committed a foul in the area led to a penalty. Devron Garcia converted the resulting spot kick to give the Catrachos a 2-1 halftime lead.

In the second half the Hondurans kicked their formidable attack into high gear, finding success in the 61st minute. High pressure forced an error from Jerez, who let the ball loose in front of his own net for Velasquez to tap home his second.

Five minutes later active Honduran forward Alberth Elis notched the fourth.

El Salvador once again cut the lead through captain Mario Jacobo´s header (72´), before Jorge Bodden closed the scoring with a header of his own (82´).

"I think we played well, but we´re just finding our feet," said Honduras head coach Jose Francisco Valladares. "El Salvador was a good rival. Hopefully we can come back on Sunday and put ourselves in a position to advance."

In the afternoon opener, host Guatemala pushed forward early and often, but failed to break an organized Nicaraguan defense. With impressive offensive efforts from Paolo Ortiz, Pablo Samayoa and Mario Hernandez, the Chapines came close on several occasions, hitting the post and the crossbar in the second half.

But given a strong showing from the visitors and goalkeeper Rendel Hodgson, the home side was unable to break through, leaving both teams in second place after one match day, behind the impressive Hondurans.

"It´s an effort that will serve us well," Nicaraguan head coach Luis Londoño said. "They were strong in attack, but we held up. Now we look forward to the next round."

In the second round of matches on Sunday, Honduras takes on Costa Rica in the early game, while El Salvador will look to bounce back in the late match against host Guatemala.

Haiti and Trinidad draw in Caribbean Cup

ST. JOHN´S, Antigua -- In a meeting of past champions, Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago kicked-off the Caribbean Cup finals with 0-0 Group A draw at the Antigua Recreation Ground on Friday. Antigua and Barbuda will face the Dominican Republic in the second game of the doubleheader.

The two regional football giants were both on the defensive from the opening whistle. It was clear that neither side wanted to risk an early defeat in what is expected to be a tightly contested group.

In a tale of two halves, Haiti held a slight edge in the first 45 minutes, while the Soca Warriors were more assertive in the second half. Key stops by both goalkeepers, however, and some wayward shooting, ensured a goalless result.

Trinidad´s Atullah Guerra used every inch of his long frame in the 20th minute to rise over the Haitian defense and head the ball towards goal only to be denied by the outstretched arm of Jhony Placide.

Haiti´s best chance to take the lead came on the edge of halftime, when Fritznel Louis spun from 25 yards and fired a shot just to the right of Trinidadian keeper and captain Jan Michael Williams.

A few minutes earlier, a close-range attempt by Pascal Millien flashed just inches high of the Trinidad goal.

Trinidad, which last won the Caribbean Cup in 2001, played with increased urgency in the second half and moved Hughton Hector into a more attacking role. The tactical adjustment almost paid dividends in the 51st minute, but Placide pulled off a diving save after the 28-year-old midfielder slipped past his mark.

Hughton combined well with Aubrey David to put pressure on the Haitian defense, while second-half substitute Lester Peltier gave Trinidad another weapon upfront, but they could not find the back of the net.

Next up for Haiti is a meeting against the Dominican Republic on Sunday, while Trinidad meets Antigua the same day.

Faña Farias powers Dominican Republic to win

ST. JOHN´S, Antigua -- A last-minute goal from Jonathan Faña Farias completed a Dominican Republic comeback to defeat host Antigua and Barbuda 2-1 in the Caribbean Cup on Friday at the Antigua Recreation Ground. The result gives the Dominicans first place in Group A with three points, two ahead of Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago, who played to a scoreless draw earlier in the evening.

Antigua, which advanced to the semifinal round of 2014 CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying before being eliminated in October, came out of the gate with all cylinders firing.

In the 2nd minute, Quinton Griffith hammered a 25-yard free kick against the post, leaving the goal to wobble in its wake.

Peter Byers broke through 15 minutes later, giving the home side a 1-0 lead with a shot from 18-yards out that eluded Dominican goalkeeper Miguel Lloyd.

As the game went on, the Dominican Republic started to settle and develop a rhythm, but it could not pierce the Antiguan backline.

The Benna Boys, though, constantly threatened to double their lead. Tamorley Thomas should have done just that, but after breaking free towards goal, he shot tamely.

Antigua came out of the break in a buoyant mood and continued to play some enterprising football. Several near misses resulted as the visitors made the decision to advance their attacks down the right side of the pitch.

Domingo Peralta thought he equalized in the 55th minute, only to have a goal disallowed for offside.

The Dominican Republic was rewarded for its persistence in the 74th minute thanks to a Cesar Peralta free kick, making the score 1-1.

Second-half substitute Erik Lopez made his presence felt, setting up Faña Farias with a delightful through ball that the 25-year-old hit past goalkeeper Molvin James with a minute left in regulation time. It was Fana Farias´ seventh goal in this year´s competition.

Antigua had one last chance, but the duo of Byers and Randolph Burton could not place a loose ball, which slipped out of Lloyd´s hands, into an open net.

The Dominican Republic´s next outing is on Sunday against neighbor Haiti, while Antigua will meet Trinidad & Tobago later that same day.

HONDURAS

Olimpia and Victoria, the two top clubs of the Apertura 2012, meet in the first leg of the final on Saturday, with both teams hoping to gain an early advantage. The clubs are led by two of the top scorers of the Honduran tournament -- Olimpia´s Roger Rojas leads the way with nine goals, while Colombian Mauricio Copete (Victoria´s all-time leading scorer), has seven, good for third this season.

These two teams have met in two previous finals, most recently in 2006, when they disputed a hard-fought series from which Olimpia eventually prevailed a 4-3 aggregate win. The previous encounter came in 1995, when the team from La Ceiba made history by capturing the only title in its 77-year history.
