Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”

The Strongest es campeon!

UNCAF Championship U-17

Guatemala - El Salvador 3-2

Honduras - Costa Rica 3-0

Honduras, Guatemala win in UNCAF U17 play

SAN MIGUEL PETAPA, Guatemala -- The second match day of action at the 2012 UNCAF Under-17 Championship proved just as exciting as the first, with two more games taking place at the Estadio Julio Armando Cobar on the outskirts of Guatemala City.

Honduras faced a stiff challenge from Costa Rica, making its first appearance of the tournament, before the Catrachos pulled away late for their second straight win on the strength of a hat-trick from Alberth Elis.

In the late game, host Guatemala got a hat-trick of its own to also gain an inside track towards qualifying for the finals of the 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship in Panama.

El Salvador played the Guatemalans evenly through much of the game, but the locals rode Christopher Ortiz´s three-goal performance to victory, giving the Guatemalans four points and the provisional second place.

Ortiz opened the scoring in the 28th minute, taking advantage of a loose ball in the area to get off a shot, and then netting his own rebound to break a scoring drought for the host, who was shutout by Nicaragua on Friday.

The standout Guatemalan forward scored again seven minutes after the interval to double the lead, this time on a splendid free kick from just outside the Salvadoran area.

A determined El Salvador side refused to give up, and cut into the lead in the 57th minute via defender Juan Barahona, who sliced home a cross.

Just six minutes later Guatemala was down to ten men, as Rafael Arriaga was sent off with a double yellow. Salvadoran Jose Contreras then saw straight red six minutes later, leaving the teams again level.

The score was then leveled as well on 73 minutes, when Oscar Hernandez headed in a corner, setting up a dramatic conclusion.

With just minutes remaining, Ortiz was fouled in the box, and stepped up to deposit the resulting spot kick to give the host a valuable 3-2 win, which puts them close to qualifying for the confederation championships.

"We´re just glad to get the win and get on track," said Ortiz. "Now we´ll come back in the next match against Honduras, and we´re going for first place."

In the early game, early tournament leader Honduras had its hands full with a determined Costa Rica side, in action for the first time in Guatemala after a first match day bye.

The Ticos looked lively on the ball under the hot midday sun, and nearly opened the scoring several times, including early in the second half, when defender Elmer Guity flashed a corner kick just high of the Honduran crossbar.

Betting on its speed and the counterattack, Honduras instead broke through in the 51st minute, as speedy target man Alberth Elis raced onto a long pass and finished past Costa Rican goalkeeper Jorge Jara.

Down a goal, the Ticos continued to press, but their efforts to tie the match were severely hampered by a red card to Andrey Mora midway through the half.

Honduras eased to an eventual 3-0 victory from there, as Elis scored a second on a quick counter in the 72nd minute, before finishing another break, and his impressive hat-trick, six minutes later, to leave the Catrachos atop the group after two rounds with a perfect six points.

"We´re happy to get another win," said midfielder Brayan Velasquez, the provider on two of Elis´s goals on the day. "It puts us in good position, but nothing is settled yet. Our goal is to come out on top every game."

The next round takes place on Tuesday, when Honduras can clinch a spot in the regional finals with a win against Nicaragua. Costa Rica and El Salvador then face off in the late match, both looking for their first win of the tournament.

Carribbean Cup 2012

Sejr til Antigua & Barbuda og Haiti vandt kampen om Hispanola.

Haiti tops Dominican Republic 2-1 in Caribbean Cup

ST. JOHN´S, Antigua -- The battle for Hispaniola lived up to the hype as Haiti earned the bragging rights with an exciting 2-1 win over neighbor Dominican Republic on Sunday in Caribbean Cup finals play at the Antigua Recreation Ground.

The win vaulted Haiti into first place in Group A with four points, one ahead of the second-place Dominicans. Host Antigua and Barbuda will face Trinidad & Tobago later in the evening.

Against the run of early play, Haiti took a 10th minute lead, when Leonel St. Preux found himself unmarked in the six-yard box to slot past goalkeeper Miguel Lloyd.

The resulting celebration was cut short, however, as the Dominican Republic pulled level two minutes later through Kerbi Rodriguez. The 23-year-old attacker easily beat Frandy Motrevil after the Haitian goalkeeper pushed a shot from Jonathan Faña Farias into his path.

The first-half action did not end there, however. A defensive error by the Dominicans in the 39th minute allowed Jean-Philippe Peguero to pounce and easily beat Lloyd to give Haiti a 2-1 lead. It was Peguero´s first goal of the finals and his sixth of the competition overall.

Following the break, both teams made every effort to maintain an entertaining brand of play, though the second half produced no additional goals.

Particularly outstanding was 17-year-old Dominican midfielder Carlos Martinez, who plays in Spain with Barcelona´s "A" youth team. For Haiti, team captain Jean Monuma Constant, 30, proved to be an unremitting handful for the Dominican defense.

Haiti, which has won six of its eight Caribbean Cup matches this year, will complete group play on Tuesday with an encounter against Antigua, while the Dominican Republic must prepare for Trinidad & Tobago.

Antigua stifles Trinidad 2-0

ST. JOHN´S, Antigua - Trinidad & Tobago found itself on the brink of elimination from the Caribbean Cup after falling 2-0 on Sunday to Antigua and Barbuda at the Antigua Recreation Ground. The result left the eight-time Caribbean champion with only a single point from two Group A games, while the host bounced back from a 2-1 loss to the Dominican Republic to secure its first points.

Haiti, which defeated the Dominican Republic in the evening´s first match, is in first place with four points.

In an even first half, both teams played a waiting game as a premium was placed on denying, rather than producing, opportunities. The action was principally wedged in the midfield and the forwards were left mostly anonymous.

Hughton Hector had the best chance for Trinidad in the 38th minute, but his shot from just inside the 18-yard box was parried by Molvin James for a corner. The Antiguan goalkeeper flashed his talents once again two minutes later, thwarting Atullah Guerra from close range.

Antigua´s Kimoi Alexander created a semi-chance just before the break that failed to bother Soca Warriors goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams.

Quinton Griffith gave the home supporters something for which to cheer, conjuring a moment of magic in the 51st minute to give the Benna Boys a 1-0 lead. The 20-year-old defender collected a rebound of his own free kick and lashed it past Williams from 20-yards out.

Randolph Burton nearly doubled the advantage a few moments later, hitting the crossbar after being on the receiving end of unselfish service by Tamorley Thomas.

Kevin Molino tried to bring the visitors on level terms in the 65th minute with a low volley that James handled easily. Devon Jorsling hit the crossbar just a few minutes after.

Antigua secured the needed insurance goal in the 73rd minute and it had the dependable Peter Byers to thank. The 28-year-old forward got into the box and after a hesitation dribble, slipped a shot past Williams for his second tally in two Caribbean Cup games.

Group A, which was expected to be tightly contested, concludes play with a Tuesday doubleheader. In the opener, Trinidad & Tobago will need to beat the Dominican Republic to have any hope of progressing. Immediately afterwards, Antigua will take on Haiti.

The top two teams will advance to the semifinals and book tickets to the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Grêmio hoping to tie Fernando down to new contract

Grêmio are hoping to offer midfield star Fernando a new contract to fight off interest from a host of European clubs.

Fernando, 20, has been targeted by CSKA Moscow and Porto as a possible transfer target once the January transfer window opens, however the volante is keen to think about his future during the Brazil off season, before committing to a new deal.

“My contract is until 2016,” Fernando told Lancenet!

“But today we know that no player’s contract is unbreakable. Now I want to think a bit on vacation, for the year was hard.

“And then I will decide about any negotiations. But for now, I will be present on January 3 for the pre-season.”

And despite the speculation around his future, the Brazil Under-20 star was happy to take part in the opening of the new Grêmio Arena on Saturday evening against Hamburg.

“We know that the field is not in the best condition. The Arena is not all completed yet, but we´re very pleased to have participated in this festival, which will go down in history.”

Samba har været inde på det tidligere...men just a reminder....

Brasileirao 2012 Team of the year

One week on from the climax of the 2012 Brasileirão it is time to reflect on the stars of an enthralling competition. Attendances may not have been inspirational, but the season continued upon and upward trend for the domestic game. Another Brazilian side were crowned kings of the continent while the transfers of Diego Forlán and Clarence Seedorf also raised interest in the competition. There are a number of stories to be told: from the jubilation of Palmeiras´ Copa do Brasil win to the despair of their relegation to second flight months later, the revival of Atlético Mineiro and Ronaldinho as after narrowly avoiding relegation in 2012 they became potential title challengers. Here, though, we chronicle the tales of the top XI individuals who served to make the campaign a memorable one for numerous fans.

Goalkeeper: Diego Cavalieri - Fluminense

There can be no over who the best keeper in the 2012 Brasileirão was. Diego Cavalieri provided Flu with a solid base from which to build their charge to the title. Just as Fred´s goals propelled them up the league, as did a string of solid performances from the keeper. He displayed immense agility and composure, nowhere more so than in the Round 7 win over Náutico when he performed stop after stop for the most deserved clean sheet of the season.

Right-back: Marcos Rocha - Atlético Mineiro

Brilliant after joining from América-MG, Marcos Rocha made the spot on the right of the defence his own in his first season for Galo. He bombed forwards with electric pace and showed a decent standard of delivery week after week, often providing a devastating source on the counter attack. Though he may lack height, he is the archetypal Brazilian full-back and his impressive season has warranted interest from Europe and, according to Globo Esporte, most recently from Newcastle United.

Centre-back: Réver - Atlético Mineiro

A rock solid defender, Réver was consistently excellent at the heart of the Alvinegro defence. Almost impenetrable, the 27-year-old has developed a reputation as one of the most dependable defenders in the league. He also offers a threat in the opposing area, something which was borne out in his six goals for the season.

Centre-back: Gum - Fluminense

Almost an ever-present at the back for the champions, the towering Gum missed just four games in the season (two of which came after the title was won). He effectively marshalled the defence that conceded the joint-fewest goals in the season, and for that alone he deserves recognition. The Fluzão player hardly put a foot wrong in 2012.

Left-back: Carlinhos - Fluminense

It is perhaps predictable to have a back four made solidly up of players from the top two teams in the league, but Carlinhos has grown since making the position his own this season. His pace regularly offered relief to the defence when they most needed it and it also supplied much of Flu´s width in the final third. Rarely beaten and did not neglect his defensive duties and beats Grêmio´s Anderson Pico to the spot.

Defensive midfield: Paulinho - Corinthians

The 2011 champions were perhaps fortunate to hold onto Paulinho during the summer but the Club World Cup proved to be enough to convince him to ignore persistent interest from Inter. His dynamism in midfield made the Timão absurdly effective in the transition and he once again chipped in with an impressive seven goals. A regular in the Brazil squad in the latter days of Mano Menezes´ reign, Corinthians may be forced to let him leave this winter.

Defensive midfield: Souza - Náutico

Not an obvious choice, but for his impact in a decent debut season for the Timbu Souza deserves praise. He provided the building blocks for some of the best moments at Aflitos and showed that he is capable of switching a game on its head. Be it from craft or from finishing, the set piece specialist was integral to a decent Série A season that pushed Náutico forward and kept their heads above water.

Attacking midfield: Bernard - Atlético Mineiro

The revelation of the season, Bernard looks to be a real gem of a player. He possesses pace that can be used in the wide areas and superb crossing ability to match. Also capable of drifting in field, he has proved to be a clinical finisher. Easily the most exciting player to watch last season but talk of a move to Europe is perhaps premature now that Copa Libertadores football is on the table. However, there is no doubt he will be a star across the Atlantic Ocean soon enough.

Attacking midfield: Elano - Grêmio

The former Manchester City midfielder enjoyed a renaissance after his move from Santos early in the season as he stepped into a key role for Vanderlei Luxemburgo´s side. His ingenuity and passing ability blossomed behind a talented group of strikers which included Kléber, Marcelo Moreno and André Lima. His form may have tailed off towards the end of the season, but some real moments of brilliance ensure his spot in the team.

Attacking midfield: Ronaldinho - Atlético Mineiro

Reinvigorated by his move to Galo, Ronaldinho proved all the sceptics wrong with some magnificent displays for the Belo Horizonte side. The lethargic, arrogant player that sauntered around the Engenhão pitch seems a distant memory as the two-time World Player of the Year flourished in a more withdrawn role in Cuca´s side. His experience served him well as an impressive return of goals and assists brought R49 as close to his best since he left Europe.

Striker: Fred - Fluminense

The best striker in Brazil over the past 18 months, Fred led the line for the champions superbly and ended the season as the tournament´s highest scoring player with 20 goals in 28 appearances. Capable of poaching a goal, challenging in the air or even an acrobatic stunner, the Tricolor Carioca striker came into his own in 2012. It was fitting that he scored a late winner which clinched the championship for Fluminense.
