Winners and Losers of the Liga MX "Draft"

The Liga MX "Draft" was completed this week. Some big moves were made along with plenty of little ones. Jason Marquitz breaks down the most interesting player transfers while handing out awards.

Liga MX completed its "draft" for the Clausura 2013 season on Wednesday. It´s a little tough to call it a draft as much as a bunch of guys haggling in a hotel ballroom. Actually, considering the backward "gentleman´s agreement" system in place, this is more a bunch of feudal lords attending a serf auction. Mexican clubs toss out piles of cash to their brethren, swapping players in the hopes of finding gold.

While the results of this grand swap can be measured in dollars and new contracts, it can be difficult to decipher successes and failures. Acquiring a bunch of known commodities doesn´t necessarily translate into on the field performance. This summer, Pumas and Pachuca were lauded for opening their wallets wide to bring in some "big names". Both teams proceeded with dreadful seasons and multiple manager firings.

With all of that being said, I´m going to plow forward and pass some (more) judgment on these "draft" proceedings. There were winners. There were losers. And there was most certainly comedy.

Best Unloading: Cruz Azul

This one almost brought tears to my eyes ... tears of joy. Bravo´s year at Cruz Azul was less than ideal. Bravo never became a regular and failed to contribute positively while on the field. The home fans jeered him due to his Chivas past (which is likely to occur again at Atlas), and he never provided a reason to halt the negativity. Bravo admits that his time with Cruz Azul was a failure, and vows to turn things around at Atlas. Anything is possible, except of course this. Bravo´s days as an impact player seem to be past him.

Best Acquisition: Pachuca

Angel Reyna is a controversial figure in Mexico. He tends to find his way in to headlines too often, and it´s rarely for positive reasons. Yet, his skill set and past performances must command a ton of respect. He can be an offensive difference maker for any team, including the national team.

His success will largely depend upon how he is handled in Pachuca. Reyna is someone who needs consistent playing time, which was hard to come by in Monterrey. However, it probably behooves the team to avoid having Reyna be "the man." If Reyna could buy in to the team´s approach this could be a steal for Pachuca.

Greener Pastures: Jose Torres

Moving from the dysfunctional debacle that was Pachuca to the well-oiled machine of Tuca Ferretti´s Tigres is a nice move for ‘Gringo´ Torres. Jose Torres spent his entire career with Pachuca. Moving to a new team for the first time will undoubtedly be a challenge. Yet, if Torres is able to step up to the task, he will be much better for it. Ferretti has a talented and disciplined squad. Playing in Ferretti´s Tigres could be a great step in the career of Torres.

Who Needs a Plan: Santos Laguna

Santos finalized a bizarre swap of players with Pachuca. Santos sent Daniel Ludueña and Christian Suarez to Pachuca in exchange for Nestor Calderon and Mauro Cejas. Ludueña was actually one of Santos´s most consistent scoring threats this past season. Suarez is another attacking midfielder who proved to be a valuable asset to Santos, especially in their title run last spring.

Changes were to be expected. They are coming off an incredibly disappointing Apertura season. However, their major flaw continues to be a porous defense. Santos has been ridiculously stacked with scoring threats, but is consistently weak in the back. Sending quality like Ludueña and Suarez out in exchange for players that could bolster the backline would make a lot of sense.

Nestor Calderon and Mauro Cejas won´t be doing that for Santos. This was a trade of two offensive midfielders for two other offensive midfielders (who might not be as good). Ludueña and Suarez had proven themselves as assets at Santos. Cejas has been a valued member of Pachuca, but Calderon failed to live up to the potential he showed with Toluca.

Santos has been such a quality team for some time that they need to be given the benefit of the doubt. But this move really makes me wonder what the long term plan is. Actually, it makes me wonder if there is a plan at all.

Like the Good Ol´ Days: Puebla

Puebla doesn´t operate on the largest budget. Their moves need to be smart without a lot of swinging strikes. The return of Felix Borja just might be a quality hit.

Borja played with Puebla in 2011, before being transferred to Pachuca. Pachuca is currently cleaning house and sent Borja back to Puebla. The Ecuadorian forward had a successful run with Puebla the first time. Puebla is surely hoping for a repeat performance.

Felix Borja has sparks of brilliance in front of goal (including his celebrations). He can be a real target man for Puebla, a team that has desperately needed another quality goal-scorer. Borja hasn´t always been in great form, but a return to Puebla just might be the answer.

Biggest Gamble: Leon

Leon is coming off a remarkable first season in Liga MX. After ascending to the first division, they proceeded to take the league by storm. They finished third in the league, qualified for Copa Libertadores, and gave Tijuana everything they had in a tightly contested semifinal.

There were many keys to their success, including coach, Gustavo Matosas. Matosas must get plenty of credit for the job he has done with this team. Another important aspect of their team was their willingness to stick with their winning core. The core of team largely remained intact after achieving promotion to the top division. This was a group that learned to play winning soccer in the Ascenso division and successfully carried that over to Liga MX.

Leon has now rolled the dice with the chemistry that got them this success. They brought in two players with a wealth of talent but very different degrees of success.

Rafa Marquez is not only a world-class player but a legend in Mexico. His time in Europe, including seven seasons and twelve titles with Catalan giant, Barcelona, solidified him as one of the two most successful Mexican football players in history.

However, in 2010, after being released by Barcelona, Marquez signed with MLS and the New York Red Bulls. His time there has been less than ideal. He has displayed disdain for the league, his teammates, and apparently maintaining his level of play. Red Bulls and MLS fans alike are more than happy to see Marquez leaving the league.

The question remains as to whether Marquez will be able to regain his stellar form. Surely another reason for bringing in Marquez is the hope that he could be a positive leader in the locker room. Leon is a young team and could benefit from the guidance of someone who will instantly command a ton of respect, like Marquez.

The likelihood is that Marquez will right the ship and perform at a higher level now that he is back in Mexico. Certainly, with the added Libertadores participation, experience like that of Marquez will be a valued commodity.

For as much of a gamble as the Marquez acquisition is, the Nery Castillo signing was completely bizarre. There will be no tears shed from Pachuca fans for the departure of Castillo. He was brought home from his long European exodus to Mexico by Hugo Sanchez in the summer. Neither Sanchez nor Castillo impressed during their short stay. While it´s clear that Pachuca is dismantling much of Sanchez´s team, it´s still not a good sign when a team ditches a player five months after signing him.

Castillo is a player with great skill. He displayed it in the past with Olympiacos and El Tri. It´s just been a while since he has played to the level that put him in those positions.

No matter how these two signings work out, it´s clear that manager, Gustavo Matosas, has his work cut out for him. Balancing the collective spirit of the locker room and the magic they had together with these two new acquisitions will likely be monumental task.

Worst Overall: Toluca

It´s difficult to judge who missed out and who took the biggest misstep at this point. There were several teams that remained silent through this process. Time will tell if avoiding this crop of available players was a wise move or not.

There was one team that did pick up a few players, and some of those players seem like strange choices. Toluca had a great run this season under returning manager, Enrique Meza. Finishing the regular season in first and reaching the final when few had them picked to finish in the top eight is quite the feat. So, a drastic overhaul this offseason would be a strange choice. Adding a few pieces here or there would make more sense. However, the pieces they did add are just a bit off.

Bill Simmons likes to point out that it´s never a good sign when the fans of the team that let the player go are overjoyed to see him off. Los Angeles Angels fans laughed when the Red Sox signed John Lackey to a long term deal. Red Sox fans have since despaired. Toluca picked up defender, Fausto Pinto, and midfielder, Xavi Baez, this week. Neither of their previous teams will miss these two.

As a whole, Chivas fans never seemed overly thrilled with the exploits of Baez. Whatever promise he once might have shown, his performances of late reek of missed potential. Fausto Pinto, once a regular starter for Cruz Azul, has struggled to find regular playing time since the departure of Enrique Meza. His little time on the field of late has made the reasoning behind this clear. He´s just not that good any more. Pinto is a yellow card machine who consistently makes bad tackles in the worst of times. Meza clearly still has an affinity for him, but the fans at Estadio Azul won´t miss his presence.

Best Overall: Chivas

Hey, Chivas won something! It´s meaningless, but still ...

The acquisition of Miguel Sabah is an absolute steal for the Guadalajara club. Sabah has been one of the most consistent scoring threats in the league over the past few years. He is now able to reunite with his former teammate Rafa Marquez Lugo. Sabah and Marquez Lugo constituted one the scariest front lines in the league with Morelia. Reuniting at Chivas with the speed and playmaking abilities of some of the talented Guadalajara midfielders behind them will make for a much more competent scoring offense. Chivas only managed to score seventeen goals in seventeen matches this past season. This boost should make them a much more competitive team.

On a smaller scale, they were able to let go of the aforementioned Baez and avoid acquiring Angel Reyna. I´m obviously a fan of Reyna, but with his Club America past, Chivas fans would likely not be that welcoming.

Adding Sabah accompanied with two minor wins for the fan base gives the edge to Chivas this offseason. Enjoy it Chivas fans, or Jorge Vergara will challenge you to a duel.

Porto move to secure defender Diego Reyes

FC Porto have announced the signing of Mexico defender Diego Reyes from Liga MX outfit CF America for an undisclosed fee, following interest from both Chelsea and Benfica.

Reyes, 20, was a gold medallist with his country at the 2012 Olympic Games, as well as winning three senior caps at the 2011 Copa America in Argentina and participating at the Under-20 World Cup of the same year. He will now move to Portugal at the end of the current season, in June 2013.

The centre-back, who made his league debut as a 17-year-old, had also been a suggested January target for rivals Benfica and Chelsea in the past month, but it is the Dragão’s who have moved quickest to secure his services on a five-year contract, for a fee rumoured to be in the region of €7 million.

Reyes later revealed that the deal had been long in planning, stating: “It’s been a long process, lasting almost ten months. I’m very happy to have signed for a great team like FC Porto. I know I will learn a lot. I think we took the best decision: my family, my agent, the board and I.

“My intention now is to work hard, learn Portuguese and improve my physique. We know what FC Porto is capable of: they nurture players for two or three seasons then negotiate them with clubs of a bigger financial dimension.”

Only last week, though, the defender had attempted to play down talk of a move to the Mexican press: “They were talking about me going there, in the Portuguese press, but I never heard anything from my representative or the board of directors.”

Also able to play at right-back, Reyes will become the first Mexican to play in the Liga Sagres since Francisco Fonseca last played for Benfica in 2006.

Rivaldo´s son Rivaldinho signs for Corinthians

Corinthians have secured the signing of Brazilian wonderkid Rivaldinho, the 17-year-old son of Brazil legend Rivaldo.

The striker sealed a three year contract with the club after originally being on loan.

Rivaldinho told the press in Brazil on signing for Corinthians: “I’m used to being the son of Rivaldo. That does not bother me and doesn’t help anything.

"I know my potential. It is not because of him that I will or won’t be a great player. I will deal with the pressure. I have a history and so does he. My father is my idol.”

The youngster will be following in the footsteps of his father if he plays for the first team as Rivaldo spent a year at the club in the 1993/94 season.

He also spent time at his father´s former clubs Olympiakos and Mogi Mirim.

Chelsea target Paulinho going nowhere says Corinthians president

Corinthians have dismissed reports that Paulinho is set for a move abroad and claim that the midfielder will be staying at the club.

Paulinho has been linked with English giants Chelsea and Manchester City as the two clubs look to shore up their midfield.

But club president Mario Gobbi Filho is adamant the player is staying: "Paulinho will not move from here, nobody has asked about him and we have no intention of selling."

Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez is believed to have put the Brazilian at the top of his shortlist with Mikel´s absence due to the African Cup of Nations likely to leave Chelsea short of defensive options.

Manchester City are in a similar situation with Yaya Toure, while Roberto Mancini is also unconvinced by Jack Rodwell and Javi Garcia.

Alexandre Pato to Corinthians deal done says agent

AC Milan have agreed a deal to sell Brazilian striker Alexandre Pato to Corinthians according to the player´s agent.

The forward has long been linked with a move back to his homeland with Corinthians deep in negotiations with AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani.

But now Pato´s agent has revealed that a deal has been struck between the two clubs for the striker´s transfer.

Gilmar Veloz told Radio Bandeirantes: "AC Milan said yes to the transfer, we are defining the details. The deal will happen."

This means the end of a six year association with Milan for Pato after he joined in 2007 from Internacional.

Pato netted 63 goals in 150 appearances for the Rossoneri and 9 in 20 for the Seleção during that period.

The signing is a huge boost for the Brasileirão and could yet be followed by other high profile signings such as Robinho who is reported to be in talks with Santos.

Pinga becomes latest Santos addition

Santos have added another name to their roster for the 2013 season, with the arrival of Al Dhafra (UAE) attacking midfielder Pinga.

Pinga, 31, arrives at the Vila Belmiro after five years away from Brazilian football, having also spent spells in Italy and the Middle-East.

The diminutive creative midfielder came through at Ceará, but has only played for Internacional out of Brazil´s big thirteen sides.

"It´s all agreed, but he still has to pass medical tests yet," vice-president Odílio Rodrigues told Lancenet!

"He has the backing of the coaching staff and is a player of great quality. He has been outside of Brazil since 2008 and has spent time in Italy and Internacional."

Pinga will become Santos´ fourth signing of the summer, joining Guarani defender Neto, Figueirense left-back Guilherme Santos and midfielder Renê Júnior from Ponte Preta.

Cris set for Grêmio after Galatasaray exit

Veteran centre-back Cris is set for a return to Brazilian football with Grêmio after parting ways with Turkish giants Galatasaray by mutual consent, Sambafoot understands.

Cris, 35, joined Galatasaray last summer after eight years in French football with Lyon, but will arrive back in Brazil tomorrow after receiving an offer to join the Rio Grande do Sul outfit.

The centre-back, who has 27 Brazil caps to his name, played for both Corinthians and Cruzeiro before heading to Europe, playing a major role for the latter as they won a domestic treble, or Triple Crown, in 2003.

At Lyon, he would go on to win four Ligue 1 titles and three cup competitions, before a switch to Istambul in August 2012.

Within months of joining, though, his Turkish adventure has come to an end and he is set to join Brasileirão giants Grêmio under manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo.

The Gaúcho side have been in the market for a centre-back in recent weeks, following the confirmation that Gilberto Silva would return to former side Atlético Mineiro for the 2013 season.

The deal is set to be announced in the coming days.

Grêmio await response from FC Porto over offer for midfielder Souza - Report

Grêmio are waiting to hear back from Portuguese giants FC Porto over their offer to sign midfielder Souza on a permanent deal, after the loan agreement between the two clubs came to an end in December.

Souza, 23, played 60 games for Grêmio last season, with only Leo Gago and Marcelo Moreno coming close to as many appearances, and scored three goals, as well as contributing four assists.

With the loan deal coming to an end, Souza has returned to Porto and will start training with the club on Thursday while the two clubs look to come to an agreement over the player’s future.

Lancenet! are reporting that Porto have valued the midfielder at €10 million, but that is too much for the Porto Alegre club, who have counter-offered with a bid of €3 million for 50% of the player’s economic rights.

Grêmio are now waiting to hear back from Porto but are confident as the Portuguese club have made it clear they want to sell the player.

Cruzeiro hoping to sign Dynamo Kiev defender Leandro Almeida
Cruzeiro president Gilvan de Pinho Tavares has revealed that the Belo Horizonte club are trying to sign Dynamo Kiev defender Leandro Almeida.

Almeida, 25, started his career with Cruzeiro’s city rivals Atlético Mineiro before moving to the Ukraine giants in 2009 but is said to be keen to return to Brazil in the near future and has been linked with a move to Atlético Paranaense, who were promoted from Serie B last season.

“We are short a defender and there is a great chance of Leandro Almeida coming,” Tavares told TV Band Minas.

And the player, who was born in Belo Horizonte, has revealed he would have no problem signing for the great rivals of his former club.

“I have a great admiration for Atlético. I was raised there and thank you for all you have done for my career.

“But I´m a professional. Cruzeiro is one of the largest teams in Brazil. If you have a good proposal for me and for Dynamo Kiev, I believe that trading can happen.”

Internacional looking to reduce number of foreign player’s in the squad
Internacional will continue to try and reduce the number of foreign player’s in their squad, despite receiving no offers for the players during the close season.

The CBF rules state that only three non-Brazilian player’s can be included in the match day squad, and with Inter having five foreigners on their books, this means that each week two player’s will miss out.

Inter are looking to sell at least two of the five player’s - Pablo Guiñazú, Mario Bolatti, Andrés D´Alessandro, Jesús Dátolo or Diego Forlán – but will leave it up to new coach Dunga as to who stays and who goes.

“There is a statutory requirement, it is the rule of the game,” executive director Newton Drummond told Radio Guaiba.

“No use training, training and not playing. The players are frustrated. We will resolve it, but for now, there is no proposal. The five will work and Dunga will have to decide who plays and who is left.”

One of the problems in moving the player’s on, as director of football Cesar Luis Souto de Moura told Radio Bandeirantes, is the high salary that Inter pays.

“Inter practices a level of compensation above the other Brazilian clubs and not to mention the rest of South American. Meanwhile, we have to wait and live with the situation.”

Bernard: This is the year of the Galo

Atlético Mineiro star Bernard is confident of a successful 2013 for his club, after telling fans “It’s the year of the Galo”.

Bernard, 20, was the revelation of the Brasileirão last season, and, along with former Barcelona star Ronaldinho, helped Atlético challenge for the title before finally finishing in second place.

The young attacking midfielder has already attracted interest from Europe, with the Belo Horizonte club turning down an €11.5 million offer from Russian club Terek Grozny.

But Atlético president Alexandre Kalil has promised not to sell any of their star player’s until at least the end of the Copa Libertadores in July, and Bernard hinted to fans via his Facebook page that he may stay even longer.

He said: “This is the year of Galo [Atlético’s nickname], you bet. May God illuminate our way into another cycle. We will be together for another year!

“I can only thank God for this year that has been so wonderful to me.”

Napoli confirm Vargas, target of three Brazilian clubs, will leave on-loan in January

Napoli’s sporting director Riccardo Bigon has confirmed the Italian club will let Chilean striker Eduardo Vargas, who has been targeted by Grêmio, São Paulo and Flamengo, leave the club on loan in January.

Vargas, 23, has failed to adapt to life in Italy since moving to the Naples club in January 2012, and will now be allowed to leave the club to try to resurrect his career elsewhere.

“He will be loaned. We have several alternatives in Europe and South America,” he told Italian newspaper La Republicca.

“We will analyse them to choose the best for him to continue developing. Adaptation to Italian football and life on a day-to-day basis has proved more difficult than expected.”

Both Grêmio and São Paulo, who see the player as a replacement for Lucas Moura who has just moved to PSG, have submitted loan offers for the former Universidad de Chile, while Flamengo have also registered an interest in the player.

However, the three Brazilian clubs will face competition from team’s in Mexico and Italy to sign the forward.

São Paulo announce new three-year kit deal with Penalty

São Paulo have officially announced on Tuesday a new partnership with sports goods company Penalty to supply the club´s merchandise until the end of 2015.

The club, who were previously supplied by Reebok, will receive more than R$35 million-a-year (€13 million) from the new arrangement, which will debut on January 19 when São Paulo take on Mirassol in the Paulista state championships.

“Penalty have an important history alongside São Paulo, lasting nearly two decades. Together we have enjoyed glorious moments such as the double Libertadores success of 1992 and 1993,” Roberto Estefano, president of Penalty, told the club´s official website.

His comments were echoed by São Paulo director Julio Casares, who added: “We welcome the arrival of Penalty—a great Brazilian company who excel in quality and advanced technology. They have already worked with us and helped us build our status in the international arena.”

The company have made a commitment to “innovate technologically” and supply the club with “modern designs”, as well as assisting in marketing strategy.
