Player Profile : What happened to Marc Crosas
We take a look at Marc Crosas’ fall from La Masia starlet to the unknown club of FC Volga in the Russian Premier League.
“I leave with the intention to return, that is my objective.”
Those were the famous last words of Marc Crosas when he left Barcelona in 2008 to join French club Lyon on a short term loan, that loan turned into a permanent move away from the Camp Nou and three years on the statement now seems never likely to happen.
To many it is a suprise that Crosas even started his career at Barcelona, normally a player from the infamous La Masia stays with the club and proves to be an instant footballing star but not all of them do well, not all of them have glittering careers. Crosas certainly doesn’t, once dubbed the “next” Pep Guardiola, he is now under performing for unknown Russian side FC Volga.
Crosas, came through the youth ranks at Barcelona and impressed so much that he signed a five-year professional deal with the club in 2006, a year later he made his official debut in the Copa del Rey against CF Badalona, replacing Andres Iniesta. He impressed and became a regular back-up player, travelling to the 2006 World Club Cup in Japan. Overall, he made 34 appearances for Barcelona with his biggest moment scoring the winning penalty in the final of the 2007 Copa Catalunya against neighbours Espanyol.
His career was hardly blossoming at the Catalan club, but at the time managed by Frank Rijkaard, Barcelona were going through trouble. Big names such as Deco, Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o were underperforming and most of the squad became unmotivated after winning the Champions League in 2006. That led to a change in coaching staff at the Camp Nou, with a man who Crosas was once dubbed – Pep Guardiola taking over, he quickly re-arranged the playing staff and their were a number of casualties.
One was Crosas, the midfielder who had impressed in La Masia but had never been given a real chance at professional level had been axed. He moved to French club Lyon on loan for the end of the 2008 season, the words : “I leave with the intention to return, that is my objective.” will always be remembered as he spoke upon his arrival in France.
Obviously disappointed at his departure from the Camp Nou, Crosas had left the club with words of enthusiasm, he wanted to return and it was up to him to prove he could. However, his time with Lyon did not go well, a change in coach saw him deemed surplus to requirement and he returned to Barcelona.
Could he force his way back into the team at his boy-hood club, no, was the quick answer he received and he quickly became subject of a bid from Scottish club Celtic. That bid became true when he signed for the club in a £1.6m deal, Barca still seemed unsure over his talents though as they inserted a buy-back option in his contract.
Things started to go well for Crosas, a couple of man of the match awards led to him being voted the clubs Young Player of the Season and he won Goal of the season for a 30-yard stunner against St Mirren. However, once again a change in management led to the midfielder being axed. Neil Lennon took over at Celtic and Crosas only played a total of three games in the 2010/2011 season.
The boy from Girona who had been a starlet in Barcelona’s famous La Masia had now become a bit part player at Celtic in Scotland, a far cry from the glittering career he had once looked capable of giving and having.
With no reason to stay in Scotland and no buy-back deal from Barcelona, Crosas searched for a new club in February of this year and had a couple of offers, the most lucrative came from Russian Premier League new boys FC Volga.
He signed for Volga in February 2011 for £300,000, a move that suprised many followers of Crosas, especially those that still felt intrigued by his talents in Barcelona.
At 23, his career now takes a different step, impressing in Russia, especially with a team that are only just new to the Premier League may prove difficult to say the least.
This La Masia starlet was one of the unfortunate ones whose time to be given a chance at Barcelona fell just as the club were in the process of changing their coach and ethics, that pattern of managerial changes has stayed with Crosas ever since he left the club, with Lyon and then Celtic.
His promise to return to Barca one day now seems very distant indeed……..
og nu er han så i Mexicansk fodbold - ligesom den spanske scouser Luis Garcia.
