So It Begins
Last night’s friendly in the Pacaembu gave Santos’ fans their first glimpse of the team’s new face in action. The visage was pleasing to look at. The new look starting XI jumped out to a 2x0 lead in a energetic first half before handing the baton off to the reserves. Two more goals were added in the much more pedestrian second phase to leave Grêmio Barueri recovering from a 4x0 battering. Bring on Saturday and the new season.
The lineup for the first half was:
Rafael Cabral, Rafael Galhardo, Neto, Durval, Guilherme Santos; Arouca, Renê Júnior, Cícero, Montillo; Neymar, André.
The new year has brought a return to the 4-4-2 diamond formation with Renê at the base, Montillo at the tip, and the sides being occupied by Arouca and Cícero.
Santos controlled the game as expected. Grêmio Barueri spent most of their time building a wall in front of goal to prevent what seemed to be inevitable. A number of good opportunities were created and wasted before Neymar’s penalty and Rafael Galhardo’s deflected shot gave Santos a 2x0 lead going into the half.
Renê Júnior was the standout performer before the break. He was equally adept at breaking up play and providing good passes to facilitate smooth attacking sequences. Sorry, Adriano. You have already been replaced.
Muricy made eleven changes at the break, and sent out the following players for the second forty-five.
Aranha; B. Peres, Jubal, Gustavo, P. Henrique; Adriano, Alan Santos, Patito, Miralles; Bill, Victor Andrade
The surprising inclusion were the Copinha centerbacks who have a last 16 game on Thursday to prepare for (not Friday as I said last time), and the soon to be departing Bruno Peres.
At this point, the players obviously weren’t too bothered and the game’s tempo fell off quite a bit. Grêmio decided to be a bit more positive but created little of note. The opposition wasn’t the best, but it was encouraging to see Jubal and Gustavo looking so composed at the back. Up front it was Patito and Bill who were most visible. Yes, that is Bill’s name in a sentence that implies competence. He scored an absolute cracker to add cream to the cake.
With about fifteen or so minutes to go the new wunderkind, Gabriel Barbosa, got his debut. I doubt he touched the ball. Doesn’t matter. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of him in the upcoming weeks.
Without further ado, here are the highlights.
