http://www.youtube.com/w…zqJ3oDG53ecBelize wins first-ever Copa Centro game SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - Belize won its first-ever game at the UNCAF Copa Centroamericana and grabbed the inside track on an automatic berth in the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Nicaragua on Tuesday at the Estadio Nacional.
The scoreboard was opened against the run of play in the 29th minute, when Midfielder Trevor Lennen ran onto a ball at the top of the box, and rifled a shot into the back of the net that Nicaraguan goalkeeper Denis Espinoza could do little about.
Nicaragua continued to press, but it was Belize that nearly extended its lead two minutes before the half. Harrison Rochez shot strongly from the top of the box, but his drive was denied by a diving Espinoza, and Lennen´s follow up shot rolled just wide of the Nicaraguan goal, sending the game to halftime with Belize up one.
In the second half, Nicaragua upped the pressure even more, pushing for the tying goal that would keep its quest alive to qualify for the Gold Cup. But they were denied time and time again by Belize´s superb goalkeeper Woodrow West.
In the 70th minute, team captain David Solorzano put Belize on notice, placing a free kick just high from 20 yards.
The stage was set for a dramatic finish, and it wasn´t until the 85th minute that Nicaragua finally broke through.
A long ball was settled skillfully in the box by Felix Rodriguez, who cut back for Elvis Figueroa. The 24-year-old pounced on the bounding ball and slammed the equalizer past West.
Nicaragua was inspired and just two minutes later Samuel Wilson cracked a drive off West´s post from 20 yards.
The game went to stoppage time and looked headed for a draw, until Belizean forward Deon McCauley caught up to a hopeful long ball up the middle and tapped past a sprawling Espinoza to give Belize the lead and, as time was signaled, the victory.
The victory was Belize´s first in the competition after 23 games. Nicaragua´s defeat extended its Copa winless streak to seven and eliminated it from contention.
Belize is now second in Group A on four points in Group A, two ahead of Guatemala. The Chapines will face first-place Costa Rica later in the evening. If Guatemala fails to beat Costa Rica, Belize will qualify for its first-ever Gold Cup.
Costa Rica, Guatemala tie; Belize to Gold Cup SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - Costa Rica and Guatemala wrapped up the group stage at the UNCAF Copa Centroamericana on Tuesday with a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Nacional, leaving the Guatemalans set to play for fifth place on Friday and giving Belize a place in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
It wasn´t long before the host - already into the semifinals by virtue of wins in its first two matches -- was pushing forward in numbers.
In the 11th minute, Jairo Arrieta took advantage of defensive imprecision from the Chapines, and slammed a shot past goalkeeper Cristian Alvarez into the net for the 1-0 lead, which would last through half time. It was the Columbus Crew forward´s tournament leading second goal.
The visitors, knowing they needed a win to advance to the semifinals, attempted to push forward throughout the second frame. The clearest early opportunity, though, was for Costa Rican forward Randall Brenes, who pushed his header just wide on 69 minutes.
Guatemala would continue to work with industry, and Jose Manuel Contreras finally equalized in the 90th minute with his first-ever goal in the competition.
The tally got the Guatemalans a share of the points, but couldn´t get them through to the final four.
The Chapines finished Group A competition in third place with three points, one less than Belize, which qualified for its first Gold Cup.
The next opponents for Costa Rica and Guatemala will be decided after a draw later this evening to determine the teams that finish either second or third in Group B between El Salvador and Panama.
Honduras is Gold with Panama draw SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - A hotly contested 1-1 draw between defending champion Honduras and Panama wrapped up Group B action Tuesday night at the UNCAF Copa Centroamericana in Costa Rica, leaving three teams tied on two points.
The Hondurans ultimately topped the group by virtue of goal difference and, as result, advanced to the competition´s semifinals and booked a ticket to its 11th CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Later in the evening, Panama and El Salvador will face a draw to determine second and third positions in the three-team group. The second-place team will also advance to the semifinals and qualify for the confederation´s biennial championship. The third-place team will play in the Copa Centroamericana fifth-place match.
Both Panama and Honduras - two of six finalists in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying for Brazil 2014 -- took the field looking for the win.
After some back and forth play to start the match, Marcos Sanchez gave the Panamanians the lead in just the 14th minute, heading home sharply from a Carlos Rodriguez cross.
Honduras, though, leveled matters 17 minutes later. Anibal Godoy handled just outside the Panamanian area, leading to a yellow card and a free kick. Oscar Boniek Garcia delivered the dead ball expertly into the area for Juan Pablo Montes to score firmly with his head.
Garcia was the creator again in the 42nd minute, this time feeding Jerry Bengtson on the break, but the forward could only put his shot off the right post of an onrushing Jaime Penedo´s goal.
The second half was less wide open, with Panama - which knew it needed a goal to avoid a draw for second place with El Salvador - taking much of the initiative.
Despite that, clear chances were hard to come by against the solid Honduran defense, and the match wore down without further goal scoring.
Honduras is now unbeaten in its last seven Copa Centroamericana games. Panama is unbeaten in its last 10 UNCAF outings, including four-consecutive draws.
The Copa Centroamericana will return to action on Friday with fifth-place and semifinal action.
