El Salvador - Costa Rica 0-1http://www.youtube.com/w…doCRlkla-2ACosta Rica downs El Salvador, heads to final SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - Host Costa Rica defeated El Salvador, 1-0, on Friday to secure a place in the final of the UNCAF Copa Centroamericana against regional rival Honduras.
It took the Ticos more sweat and time than the home crowd would have liked to break down a gritty visiting side on a cool night at the Estadio Nacional in San Jose, but a second-half strike from substitute Rodney Wallace proved to be the difference.
Costa Rica took the game to their visitors from the onset in front of a partial home crowd, attacking in waves and earning chance after chance throughout the first half.
Try as they might, though, the Ticos couldn´t crack the Salvadoran defense. When they did, they found goalkeeper Dagoberto Portillo up to every challenge.
In the second half, the Salvadorans found some more convincing offensive impetus, forcing Costa Rican goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton into a pair of good stops.
Those efforts set the table for 71st minute heroics from Wallace, who entered the field only eight minutes earlier for Jairo Arrieta. The 24-year-old forcefully headed in an Osvaldo Rodriguez cross from the right wing to give the home team a lead it would not relinquish.
The six-time UNCAF champion then held off El Salvador´s bid to mount a comeback, as Pemberton heroically stretched to palm away a goal-bound attempt from Rafael Burgos in second half stoppage time.
Costa Rica extended its unbeaten streak in UNCAF semifinals to six games (4 wins, 2 draws, 0 losses), though it did fall on penalty kicks to Honduras in the 1995 edition after the teams played to a 1-1 stalemate.
El Salvador lost in the competition for the first time after posting three straight draws and will meet Belize for third place on Sunday. The Cuscatlecos will be aiming to equal their best-ever finish after coming in third on four previous occasions.
The Ticos lost to Honduras 2-1 in the 2011 Centroamericana final and will be pleased for the opportunity to avenge that result in front of their own supporters at the Estadio Nacional, also on Sunday
Honduras -Belize 1-0http://www.youtube.com/w…2CGA2Q9HQdcHonduras advances to UNCAF final SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - Defending champion Honduras edged upstart Belize, 1-0, Friday night in the semifinals of the UNCAF Copa Centroamericana to earn a place in the championship match against the winner of the late match between host Costa Rica and El Salvador.
The teams played through an extremely active, but scoreless, first half in which the chances came frequently and were evenly divided. Top-notch goalkeeping from Belizean Woodrow West and his Honduran opposite number Donis Escober denied multiple scoring opportunities.
The proceedings became increasingly tense as the second half got underway, with both squads aware that a trip to the final was on the line.
Honduras came close several times through the pairing of U.S.-based attackers Oscar Boniek Garcia and Jerry Bengtson. But it was Belize with the clearest chance of the second half´s early going, when right back Evan Mariano tried his luck from distance, only to miss just wide.
The Catrachos finally broke through in the 67th minute, as rambling right back Bryan Beckeles got up the field and into the Belizean area, where he rifled a shot past West for the 1-0 advantage. It was the 27-year-old´s first international goal, though, he has scored twice in the CONCACAF Champions League for Olimpia.
Belize continued to attack bravely and had its best minutes in the late going, when Elroy Smith curled in a free kick that was narrowly cleared out for a corner by the Honduran defense.
Despite the Belizean pressure, Honduras managed to hang on for a narrow victory.
The Hondurans head into Sunday´s final unbeaten in their last eight Copa Centroamericana games and have conceded one goal or less in their last 14 outings in the competition.
After not playing a game in 2012, Belize will contest its fifth in 10 days in the third-place match, also on Sunday.
Panama - Guatemala 3-1http://www.youtube.com/w…Ss_GTbWPTo4Panama wins, qualifies for Gold CupSAN JOSE, Costa Rica - Panama clinched the twelfth and final spot in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup on Friday, posting a 3-1 win over Guatemala in the fifth place match of the UNCAF Copa Centroamericana.
The game started as could be expected, with both teams looking for an early upper hand in their quest to make the confederation championship field.
Panama eventually began to take the initiative through the brawny attacking duo of Blas Perez and Alcibiades Rojas.
Perez hit the post off a Rojas feed from the left wing on 27 minutes, and, only seconds later, the FC Dallas forward opened the scoring when he got a second chance to head home off another Rojas cross.
The game would wind to halftime with the one goal difference, but the Canaleros put matters away shortly after the second half kicked off.
In the 55th minute, Rojas drove a shot from 20 yards that eluded Guatemalan goalkeeper Cristian Alvarez and found its way into the back of the net to give Panama a two goal advantage.
Just three minutes later, a streaking Alberto Quintero tapped in to make the lead three for the Gold Cup bound Panamanians.
The Guatemalans got themselves on the scoreboard in the 75th minute through forward Minor Lopez, who netted his second career Copa Centroamericana.
The victory extended Panama´s Copa unbeaten streak to 11-consecutive games, a stretch during which it has conceded only three goals. After drawing three straight in the competition, the loss left Guatemala with only one win in its last 10 UNCAF outings.
With the win and fifth place in the Copa Centroamericana, Panama completes the 12-team field for the 2013 Gold Cup, which also includes UNCAF semifinalists Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Honduras, all set to play later in the day.
