Costa Rica vandt Copa Centroamericana 2013 efter en finalesejr på 1-0 over Honduras (jeg skulle desværre lidt for tidligt op til at jeg kunne se kampen). Forsvarsspiller Giancarlo Gonzáles fra norske Vålerenga scorede kampens eneste mål efter 37 min.

Grêmio director of football denies link to Liverpool´s Coates

Grêmio have denied reports that they are set to bid £7m for Liverpool´s Uruguayan defender Sebastian Coates.

Director of football Rui Costa has denied reports that the club are in negotiations with the Reds over the transfer of Coates according to respected Brazilian journalist Paulo Freitas.

This comes after English publication, The Daily Mirror, reported that a £7m deal was in the making.

The six foot seven centre back joined Liverpool in 2010 in a £6m deal from Nacional after an impressive series of displays for Uruguay at the Copa America.

But it seems now that Liverpool are willing to listen to offers for the defender after failing to displace first choice centre backs Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is believed to have misgivings about the player´s ability to play in the current setup and reportedly wants a new centre back in either January or the summer.

São Paulo coach Ney Franco: "Ganso is here to be a starter"

São Paulo coach Ney Franco insists that attacking midfielder Paulo Henrique Ganso is in his first-team plans, having left the player on the substitutes bench for the midweek Copa Libertadores clash with Bolivar.

Ganso, 22, played among a second-string São Paulo side on Saturday night in the state championship and impressed, scoring in his team´s 2-1 win over Atlético Sorocaba.

Post-match, Ney Franco was forced to answer questions over the player´s role—especially pertinant since the club spent around €7 million to purchase 45% of his economic rights just a few months ago.

“He is exceptional and he is here to be a starter,” the coach told reporters. “You need to give some players time to evolve. Some can be in good shape early in the season, while others need more time. We have to get him ready.

“For tactical reasons, against Bolivar, I preferred to change the team´s style of play. At the moment, Jadson is better than Ganso—mainly due to fitness.”

Indeed, when São Paulo take on Bolivar in the return leg on Wednesday night, it is Jadson who is once more expected to occupy the starting role.

In the club´s opening fixture of the 2013 state championship, Ney Franco trialled a system incorporating both players, but has reverted to the side´s familiar tactical setup for this week´s important Copa Libertadores qualifying fixtures.

Dória unlikely to join Juventus in January - agent

Brazilian football agent Jolden Vergette does not believe that his client Dória will leave Botafogo for Europe this transfer window, with Juventus failing to offer close to the club´s valuation of the young defender.

Dória, 18, starred in the 2012 Brasileirão after being handed a surprise first-team opportunity and impressed sides from all over Europe, with Juventus quickly expressing an interest in his signature.

Botafogo´s board are reported to be asking for a €9 million fee for their prize youngster´s services, with Juventus´ best existing offer closer to the €6 million mark. Vergette is not expecting further developments.

“The European transfer window ends next week, on the 31st,” he told reporters. “A proposal that meets Botafogo´s valuation has not arrived and I don´t think it will come in these final days.”

The player was recently part of the Brazil Under-20 side that underperformed in exiting the South American Youth Championship at the first-round stage in Argentina. Dória, though, was one of the few to emerge from the event with his reputation in tact.

The player´s economic rights are currently 40% owned by Botafogo, with Banco BMG owning 20% and an unnamed group of investors retaining a further 40%.

Campeonato Gaúcho postponed after 245 die in Santa Maria nightclub tragedy

The Gaucho Football Federation have postponed the third round of championship matches following a fire in a Santa Maria nightclub that killed at least 245 people.

The organisation has said that the new dates for the cancelled matches would be announced early next week, with both of the region´s major sides, Grêmio and Internacional, sharing their condolences.

Reports suggest the fire was caused by fireworks let off by a band performing in the club, with estimates from the local media indicating as many as 500 people were in the place at the time.

Firefighters have confirmed that victims died of smoke inhalation or were crushed to death, while reports say that sound proofing in the building caught fire, leading to toxic smoke quickly filling the club.

FIFA cancel 500 days celebrations in light of Santa Maria events

FIFA have announced that they will no longer be holding a celebration to mark 500 days until the opening game of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The announcement comes after tragic events in Santa Maria which has seen at least 245 people lose their lives in a nightclub fire.

Jerome Valcke, FIFA general secretary, was in Brazil and had this to say: "I am a father. And on behalf of Fifa send my sympathy to the relatives of the victims. I can not imagine the pain they are now, it is not natural for a parent bury a child."

The fire, believed to have been started by fireworks, claimed many lives on Saturday night as thick smoke enveloped the venue and people clambered for the few available exits.

The story, which has been developing throughout the day, has captured major attention worldwide due to the scale of the devastating incident.

Campeonato Gaúcho fixtures have also been cancelled today as the area´s two big sides, Internacional and Grêmio were due to play their games.

The statement was issued by the state football federation on their official website, once the scale of the tragedy began to emerge. A new date for the fixtures will be announced in due course.

Velkommen i klubben! San Lorenzo har virkelig nogle fantastiske fans. England havde nogle imponerende fans før tiden, men jeg synes den engelske fan-kultur de senere år er blevet lidt for pæn og lidt for kontrollerende over hvad man må gøre og hvad man ikke må gøre.
