Name: Cristián Cuevas Jara

Making his Name:

A young Cristián Cuevas began his footballing journey at local side Club Deportivo Santa Isabel, before his parents enrolled him in the academy of Primera División side O’Higgins at the age of six. Having come through the youth ranks at the club, often playing above his age level, Cuevas would go on to make his senior debut in the closing minutes of a 5-1 defeat to Colo Colo on 9 May 2011—shortly after his 16th birthday.

The player, nicknamed “Simby” due to his supposed resemblance of the Lion King character Simba as a child, has since gone on to make just eight more appearances in all competitions. He is now, though, expected to become an important member of the first-team squad in 2013.

In November 2012, having caught the eye playing for Chile Under-20′s during the 2012 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland, Cuevas underwent trials with Premier League giants Chelsea (Photo via. @chelseayouth). He has since returned to Chile, for now, but speculation over a future move still persists.

Shortly afterwards, in January 2013, Cuevas was selected to play at the 2013 South American Under-20 Championships. He has, to date, started both his side’s opening two games at the competition as a left winger, scoring in the final moments of a 2-0 victory over Bolivia.


Style of Play:

Able to play anywhere on the left-flank, or even as a central midfielder, Cuevas has predominantly featured as a left midfielder. Stocky and of average height, the Chilean youngster offers power and competitiveness to his side—with the player himself citing Argentina’s Javier Mascherano as his idol.

Cuevas offers more than just power, though, with good technical ability and a desire to attack that make him a threat as a left-winger. He has shown with the youth ranks of the Chilean national team that he is capable of scoring goals, largely due to his crisp ball-striking and timed runs into the area.

While capable of playing infield, it is on the flank where he is best utilised. His left-footed delivery into the box is generally of a high-standard, while he possesses enough pace and trickery to worry defenders. It appears likely, at present, that his future lies higher up the pitch in a left-wing role.

The Future:


It remains to be seen what the future holds at club level for Cuevas, with indications that his link to Chelsea may yet come to fruition. His trial was brief, but reports in Chile since his return have suggested that the London club are interested in capturing his services.

Speaking of the trial in the Chilean media, he said: “The experience of the week was simply spectacular. I saw things that, in Chile, are nowhere near the level that Chelsea have. I approached the week with maturity, in order to keep improving and arrive there in the future.” (El Tipografo, Dec. 2012)

As Cuevas is not yet 18 years old, an international transfer could only be completed in the summer of 2013 and, judging by O’Higgins’ president Ricardo Abomohor’s recent quotes (featured above), a move is still very much on the table.

Before then, Cuevas will look to establish himself within the O’Higgins first-team setup and, if all goes to plan, will have the prospect of an Under-20 World Cup to look forward to this summer.

Paraguay Apertura 2013 preview with list of transfers

The Apertura is upon us, here we have a look at the twelve participating sides with all the transfer ins and outs to the best of our knowledge. Cerro Porteño

The azulgrana kept their manager Jorge Fossati and star player Jonathan Fabbro after strong rumours linking him to a return to Argentina with River Plate. With the side in debt it was difficult to bring in any big names for the latest tilt at the elusive Copa Libertadores title although veteran Paul Ambrosi has arrived from Liga de Quito who won the Sudamericana with Fossati. Expect the continental tournament to seriously hamper league aspirations.

Olimpia

A terrible Clausura campaign saw Olimpia thrashed on several occassions and they suffered greatly away from home, Recanate has remained as president which means there was still some cash around to bring in the player’s that new coach Ever Almeida has requested. Having said that they owe a lot of money to a lot of people including around 2 million dollars to Pablo Zeballos and his agent. While Almeida’s experience will go a long way there are still questions as to how he will fit in so many players into the side with Pittoni and Guzman operating in a similar space to Salgueiro.

The aurinegro had such a strong start to the Clausura but almost came away with nothing, finally settling for a place in the Copa Sudamericana. They’ve lost an experienced defender in Manzur but replaced him with former Olimpia captain Julio Cesar Cáceres. Diego Alonso has been shrewd in the transfer market, acquiring Rodrigo Teixeira and Guido di Vanni to join Centurión and Dante López up front.

Ruben Israel brought stability and a ruthless streak to the Gumarelo last season as they surged late on to win their 8th title during the Horacio Cartes era. They will be going for the Copa Libertadores as always but expect Israel to maintain a grip on the league and come June they will surely be in with a shout. I don’t know much about Uruguayan striker Mauro Guevgeozián from Fénix but in Pablo Benítez and Pablo Guiñazu they have brough in som experience into the heart of the team.

Gustavo Morinigo made a great start to management and fought right up to the final day thanks to a formidable run towards the end of the Clausura. While he may have lost Teixeira the striker has been replaced by Ramon ‘Tacuarita’ Cardozo who has been in scintillating form in pre-season, expect the Academia’s fortunes to be directly correlated to the goals of the ex-Tacuary man.

The return of Chiqui Arce couldn’t cover the cracks of a very weak squad especially in attack, the albiverde are celebrating their centenary this year so relegation simply cannot be considered. They are much stronger at the back with Servín in goal and the full backs Mingo Salcedo and Raúl Cáceres brought in along with Gimenez of Tacuary. Another Tacuary man Jorge Ortega will hope to hit the net regularly.

Ricardo Dabrowski has built an excellent squad at Sol de América and they are capable of beating all the smaller sides around them and producing the odd shock (beating Cerro and Nacional late on last season). The important thing is to keep the creativity in midfield which they should do having held onto David Mendieta and Sergio Escalante. The major departure is of course Enzo Prono, the talented young striker has moved to Olimpia.

The new boys are likely to have some boisterous home support from the populous satellite town that might help them gain precious points. They have been hugely busy in the transfer market with the main signings Juan Noguera a.k.a The Black Diamond from Sporting San Lorenzo and Julio Santa Cruz, Roque’s younger brother.

They also profited from the excellent form of Antonio Bareiro who joined from Rubio Ñu and was the best player in the division.

A miracle final-day survival thanks to their thrashing of Olimpia means that the Primera keeps one of the best supported sides in the country thanks to their geographical location and the brand new stadium where all home games will be played. Towards the run-in their key player was Ricardo ‘Tom’ Ortiz who has now been signed by Nacional for the new year, it means they will have to find other players to try and lead them to safety this year, a big points total is needed. The main positive is Celso Ayala, the former River Plate defender proved to be a good coach at 2 de Mayo and during the final games of the season that helped keep El Potro in the Primera.

Comunicaciones vinder 1-0 over Heredia på mål af Uruguayanske paolo Suarez træffer, og trækker dermed fra de nærmeste forfølger Suchitepequez som kun fik 1-1 ude mod Petapa. Xelaju er delt 4 efter 2-0 sejr hjemme over Mictlan.

Honduras

2 kampe, lokal derbiet i San pedro Sula mellem Marathon og Real España endte 0-0, men Savio slog topholdet Real Sociedad med 3-1.


El Salvador

Takket være scoringer af forsvarspilleen Jorge SAnchez og angriber César Vázquez sikrede Firpo sig en 2-1 sejr i Ahuachapan over once Municipal - 3 point og dermed maksium efter 2 runder - Alianza slog Aguila 1-0 på mål af landsholdspilleren Osael Romero.

Panama

Et par kampe i nat - mestrene fra Arabe Unido tabte for anden gang i træk da det blev tio 0-1 hjemme mod San Miguelito - Chepo slog Rio Abajo 2-0 , så top 4 (playoff) hedder pt . San Francisco, Tauro, Chepo og plaza Amador.

Union Española knuste Universidad de Chile ue med 3-0 , takket være straffesparksscoringer af den unge talentfulde Oscar Hernandez og Francisco Castro - festen blev startet af den uruguyanske veteran "popeye" Scotti.

Union La Calera slog Santiago Wanderers i Valparaiso med 4-3, efter at have været bagud med både 1-2 og 2-3, men med Leandro Venegas andet mål kort før tid lykkedes det alligevel at hente 3 point på EstadioPlaya Ancha.
