Real Madrid´s Marcelo fined €6,000 for driving without a licence

Real Madrid defender Marcelo has been fined €6,000 after being caught driving without a licence.

The Brazilian full-back was stopped close to the Spanish champions´ training ground in Valdebebas on February 12, according to AS.

Marcelo’s previous licence was later revealed by the Civil Guard to have been revoked as he had clocked up the maximum number of points.

The 24-year-old is the second Blancos player to have been guilty of driving offenses this season, after Karim Benzema was clocked driving at 216 kph in the early hours of February 3, more than twice the speed limit of 100 kph.

The French striker faces losing his licence as well as a possible fine, a period of community service or even a short prison sentence, according to Spanish law.

The two incidents, as well as recent transgressions by other high-profile players, have drawn criticism from a Spanish association which supports victims of traffic accidents.

"Many players are persistently breaking traffic laws and they are people with a significant influence on the majority of the population, especially young people," the ´STOP accidentes´ group said in a statement on their website (stopaccidentes.org) on Tuesday.

The association added that they had written to all 20 of Spain´s top-flight clubs and the professional league urging them to join a campaign to raise traffic safety awareness.

Real Madrid legend Ronaldo has stated that he hopes Manchester United "lose every single game" after Sir Alex Ferguson’s recent remarks about his weight.

The United boss described Ronaldo as the "old and fat one" when asked to compare the Brazilian to his namesake Cristano ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League win at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old previously responded to the Scot’s comments with a diplomatic response but has since stated that his former side "shut his mouth" and that he hopes the Premier League side lose all their games under Ferguson.

He said: "I haven´t placed any jinx, Real Madrid shuts his mouth for me.

"But I think it was a lack of respect. A very experienced football professional honored with the title of ´Sir´ in England spoke such words as a lack of respect to me. I thought this was not polite.

"I have no more words for this gentleman except that I hope his team lose every single game they play."

The Brazilian is widely considered one of the best ever players, after scoring more than 400 goals during an illustrious career that saw him win the World Cup twice and earn the FIFA World Player of the Year award three times.

However, Ronaldo was also well-known for his issues with weight, which recently saw him turn to reality TV to lose more than four stone throughout the course of Brazilian show ´Medida Certa´.

Palmeiras players attacked by own fans following Copa Libertadores defeat to Tigre

Palmeiras players were attacked by their own fans at Buenos Aires city airport on Thursday after they conceded an injury-time goal to lose 1-0 against Argentina´s Tigre in the Libertadores Cup.

Verdão goalkeeper Fernando Prass suffered a cut to his ear and some glasses were broken during the attack by about 30 fans before the team boarded a flight to return to São Paulo.

The club said in a statement: "Palmeiras repudiate the acts of violence which injured Fernando Prass and do not recognise the people who took part in this sad episode as supporters of the club."

Club president Paulo Nobre described the assailants as "irrational bandits and not passionate supporters."

Argentine sports daily Ole and Brazil´s Globo said the fans were mainly after Chilean midfielder Jorge Valdivia, who hid in airport restrooms as hooligans fought with players and security personnel until police intervened.

Palmeiras will compete in Série B this season following relegation from the top flight of Brazilian football last season.

El colombiano Luis Suárez convocó a 23 jugadores para el seleccionado hondureño con vistas a los partidos frente a Mexico y Panamá

TEGUCIGALPA - El entrenador de la selección de Honduras, el colombiano Luis Fernando Suárez, convocó a 23 jugadores para los partidos contra México y Panamá por la eliminatoria del Mundial de Brasil 2014, que se disputarán el 22 y 26 de marzo.

Entre los convocados por Suárez figuran doce ´foráneos´, incluido Jerry Palacios, quien retorna a la selección tras su buen desempeño en la Liga Deportiva Alajuelense costarricense, donde ha convertido seis goles en los últimos siete partidos que ha disputado.

Según dijo en rueda de prensa, el estratega de Honduras tiene previsto trabajar en principio solamente con once de los jugadores que están participando en el torneo Clausura local, mientras que después lo hará de manera conjunta con los futbolistas que militan en el exterior.

La selección hondureña se concentrará en San Pedro Sula, norte de Honduras, donde se jugará el partido contra México, el próximo día 22.

Honduras, con tres puntos tras vencer como local en febrero pasado a Estados Unidos, encabeza el hexagonal de la Confederación Norte, Centroamérica y el Caribe de Fútbol (Concacaf), que se completa con Costa Rica y Jamaica.

Neymar: I don´t have a preference between Barcelona and Real Madrid

Santos star Neymar has insisted that he has not yet made a decision on his future and would be open to either Barcelona or Real Madrid.

The Brazil international is continually being linked with a move to Europe, with most reports suggesting that the Camp Nou will be Neymar’s likely destination after his contract with the Peixe expires in 2014.

However, the 21-year-old says he is in no rush to wave goodbye to his boyhood club and that he has no preference regarding the La Liga giants.

Neymar told Cope: "I have no preference for Barcelona or Real Madrid. They are both great clubs that are respected by everyone. They each have their own history and fantastic players.

"In the past few years, Barcelona have impressed the entire world with the way they play. They are one of the best teams in the world.

"Playing in Europe continues to be a dream, but I do not know whether it will happen soon. Only I decide when I´m ready for it.

"I will make the move when I make the decision myself. It´s not about anybody else, but solely my call. If I feel I have to go now, I´ll leave now. But if I want to stay for five more years, I´ll leave in five years."

The forward also had his say on Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and had nothing but praise for the pair.

"They are two amazing players who any team would love to have. You cannot compare them. They each have their own qualities," he added.

"However, if you asked me to vote for the best player in the world, I´d say Messi."

Ex-Flamengo goalkeeper Bruno Fernandes jailed for plot to kill lover


Former Flamengo goalkeeper Bruno Fernandes has been sentenced to 22 years and three months in prison for orchestrating a plot to kill his lover and hide her remains.

The 28-year-old "meticulously calculated" the abduction, murder and disposal of Eliza Samudio in 2010, a judge said on Friday morning.

Fernandes denied fathering her son and disputed child maintenance, but DNA tests showed the baby was his.

The court in the state of Minas Gerais heard Miss Samudio’s remains were fed to dogs after she had been strangled.

Judge Marixa Fabiane Rodrigues Lopes said Fernandes was "cold, violent and secretive", believing he could escape justice by hiding the body.

"Your personality is distorted and evades the minimum standards of normalcy," she said, according to Brazilian website G1.

"The guilt from these crimes is intense and highly reprehensible.

"The victim left a child of only four months orphaned."

Earlier this week, Fernandes wept in the dock and read a Bible as he denied arranging the killing alongside eight others, which included his ex-wife Dayane Rodrigues.

Bruno, who had been tipped to play at the 2014 World Cup, was captain of the Flamengo team that won the Brazilian championship in 2009 and made 134 appearances for the club.

Obese fans to be offered World Cup tickets

The 2014 World Cup is set to be the first FIFA tournament to offer seats for obese fans.

FIFA has told the Associated Press that obese fans will be offered special tickets at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Under Brazilian legislation at least 1% of seats in each stadium are to be made available for people with disabilities, including those classified as obese.

FIFA confirmed it is the "first time tickets for obese people are offered at a FIFA event", with supporters from all nations entitled to the tickets, which will also be available for June´s Confederations Cup.

"FIFA is generally following local legislation of the host countries, and is in Brazil guided by the General FIFA World Cup Bill and a separate decree related to obese people," football´s governing body told the Associated Press.

"The number of tickets available for disabled people depends on the infrastructure provisions of each stadium and the distribution between seats."

FIFA said that to qualify for a ticket, people are required to submit a medical certificate that proves they have a body mass index of 30 or more, as recognised by the Brazilian Ministry of Health and World Health Organisation.

PSG owners eye LA Galaxy group

The Qatari investment fund that owns Paris Saint-Germain is involved in a push to take over the entertainment empire that includes Los Angeles Galaxy, according to L´Equipe.

The French sports daily´s website reported on Thursday that the Qatar Investment Authority, whose sports arm Qatar Sports Investments took over PSG in 2011, has joined forces with Colony Capital, former majority shareholders at the Parc des Princes, in an attempt to buy out AEG owner Phil Anschutz.

Three bidders remain in the running to purchase the group, which - in addition to Galaxy - owns NHL franchise the LA Kings, holds shares in the LA Lakers, owns the O2 Arena in London and is a major player in the music industry.

L´Equipe reports that a deal for AEG would cost between $7 billion and $10 billion.

Lombardi "respalda" a Cagna

LA PLATA -- El presidente de Estudiantes de La Plata, Enrique Lombardi, descartó el jueves "un cambio de técnico" y respaldó el trabajo de Diego Cagna al frente del equipo, que no ganó en la primeras cuatro fechas del torneo Final.

"Estamos evolucionando y somos optimistas que con un par de resultados todo mejorará. Nos sentimos muy conformes con Diego (Cagna) por su calidad de persona y forma de trabajar. Por eso, lo respaldamos y queremos que siga", afirmó el dirigente durante el acto de presentación de la nueva camiseta, en las instalaciones del club.

Cadena perpetua a barras

LA PLATA -- La Justicia penal platense condenó el jueves a prisión perpetua a dos barras bravas de Estudiantes de La Plata, acusados de asesinar a un policía federal en marzo de 2010 durante un enfrentamiento entre hinchas del mismo club en la estación de trenes local.

La condena recayó sobre Esteban Gallardo y Raúl Gómez, acusados de ser "autor" y "partícipe necesario", respectivamente, del crimen de sargento Sergio Rodríguez, herido de muerte de un disparo en la cabeza en la estación de trenes de esta capital.

El fallo, de los jueces Carmen Palacios, Claudio Bernard y María Martiarena, a cargo del Tribunal Oral Criminal 5, encuadró el hecho como "homicidio calificado por ser la víctima integrante de una fuerza de seguridad y portación ilegal de arma de guerra".

El hecho ocurrió la tarde del 3 de marzo de 2010 en la estación de trenes, cuando un grupo de 40 hinchas que era escoltado por personal policial hacia la terminal para participar de un partido en Quilmes fue agredido a pedradas por otra facción de simpatizantes que se encontraba en las puertas del lugar.

En medio de la pelea, por una calle lateral apareció un automóvil Chevrolet Corsa color bordó desde donde se dispararon varias descargas de armas de fuego contra el segundo grupo.

Una bala impactó en la cabeza del efectivo policial Sergio Rodríguez, quien falleció horas más tarde, mientras que otro proyectil dio en la pierna de un agente del Servicio Penitenciario Bonaerense y un tercero pegó en la rodilla de un joven de 17 años.

Los tres agresores que iban en el vehículo escaparon de la zona de la estación y dos de ellos intentaron seguir la huida a pie, pero fueron todos detenidos: dos en 2 y 41, cerca de la terminal, y el restante, esa noche en 162 entre 523 y 524.

De los detenidos, uno fue liberado por falta de mérito, mientras que Gallardo y Gómez se negaron a declarar, quedando detenidos por orden del juez de Garantías Fernando Mateos, bajo la carátula de "homicidio cuádruplemente calificado", a la espera del juicio oral que concluyó este jueves.

Por el crimen de Rodríguez fue procesado el por entonces titular del Comité Provincial de Seguridad Deportiva (CoProSeDe), Rubén Pérez, acusado de "incumplimiento de los deberes de funcionario público" por presuntamente no colaborar en la prevención del enfrentamiento, aunque en febrero de 2012 fue sobreseído.

Durante la investigación también fue detenido Omar ´El Hache´ Alonso, supuesto jefe de una facción de la barra brava de Estudiantes, quien recuperó la libertad por falta de pruebas, tras un careo con testigos que dijeron haberlo visto en la escena del crimen.
