Campeonato Carioca: Botafogo eventually overcome Vasco in Taça Guanabara final

Lucas scored a late goal to give Botafogo a narrow 1-0 victory over Vasco da Gama in the Taça Guanabara final.

Vasco only needed to record a draw to win the final due to their first-place finish in the group stages.

Carlos Alberto should have given them an early lead but he somehow failed to convert from close range after Éder Luis played the ball across the face of Jefferson’s goal.

The two sides went into the half-time break level despite Botafogo’s numerous efforts on goal, which came from set-pieces in particular.

There were strong claims for a penalty after the restart when Vasco goalkeeper Alessandro seemed to take more of Lodeiro than the ball inside the box.

Vitinho failed to convert a header in front of goal and Thiago Feltri almost turned the ball into his own net from Seedorf’s cross as the Fogão continued to threaten.

Oswaldo de Oliveira’s side finally took a deserved lead with less than ten minutes remaining through right-back Lucas.

Clarence Seedorf’s clever back-heel allowed Julio Cesar to deliver a dangerous ball into the box from the left, which Bolívar rolled back for Lucas to place in the bottom corner.

Vasco then had an equaliser disallowed when Fellipe Bastos’ powerful free-kick was spilled by Jefferson and an offside Renato Silva followed up to score.

There was one final free-kick from Bastos but this time the goalkeeper made a strong save and Botafogo eventually cleared the danger to seal the win.

As winners of the Taça Guanabara, ‘opening phase’, Botafogo will face the victors of the Taça Rio, ‘closing phase’, in the Carioca State Championship final to become Rio de Janeiro champions.

Should the Fogão win the Taça Rio too, which kicks off next week, they will automatically be crowned tournament champions and claim their 20th Carioca title.

Dos hinchas de River apuñalados

BUENOS AIRES -- Dos hinchas de River resultaron heridos luego del ataque perpetrado por barrabravas de Colón de Santa Fe, en la previa del encuentro de la 5ª fecha del Torneo Final, en el Monumental.

Los dos simpatizantes "millonarios" fueron ingresados a la guardia del hospital Pirovano y uno de ellos permanecía en estado de gravedad, luego de arribar con pérdida de conocimiento y una incesante hemorragia por una herida de arma blanca.

Los barrabravas de Colón de Santa Fe que apuñalaron a tres hinchas de River fueron detenidos por efectivos de la Policía Federal y trasladados a la comisaría 51 de esta capital.

"Todos los hinchas de Colón que iban en los micros fueron detenidos y llevados a la comisaría 51", confirmó una fuente de la Policía Federal.

El incidente se produjo cuando dos de cuatro micros que transportaban a los hinchas del club santafesino, sin custodia policial, se detuvieron en esa zona de acceso de la parcialidad local.

Allí, los visitantes descendieron y atacaron a un grupo de simpatizantes de River que, según testigos, pertenecían a la filial de la localidad bonaerense de Garín.

Al llegar al lugar, la policía detuvo a 120 personas, la mayoría de ellas hinchas de Colón que se transportaban en los micros.

Cuate Castillo toma al Motagua

TEGUCIGALPA -- Directivos del Motagua, anunciaron que han despedido al técnico hondureño Reinaldo Clavasquin y han contratado para sustituirlo al mexicano Juan de Dios Castillo.

Motagua, que ha sido varias veces campeón del futbol de Primera División, actualmente está en la penúltima casilla de la tabla de posiciones del Torneo de Clausura.

Seedorf: Taça Guanabara just the beginning for Botafogo


Botafogo´s Clarence Seedorf claims that their Taça Guanabara win is ´just the beginning´ for the club as they celebrate a 1-0 win over Vasco da Gama.

Seedorf gave an imperious performance at the heart of Botafogo´s midfield and helped set up Lucas´ eventual winner.

The Dutchman spoke to reporters after doing a lap of the stadium to acknowledge the Botafogo support.

"I´m so happy. I think the celebration after the game showed the importance of it for everyone, for the fans, for the players, the coaches, and for Botafogo.

"We gave our best, we raised our game and gave more conviction. It was great to celebrate, we will celebrate for a few more days, but we know that was just the beginning and we have many more to come."

As winners of the Taça Guanabara, ‘opening phase’, Botafogo will face the victors of the Taça Rio, ‘closing phase’, in the Carioca State Championship final to become Rio de Janeiro champions.

Oswaldo de Oliveira hails Botafogo´s Taça Guanabara win

Botafogo coach Oswaldo de Oliveira is delighted with his side´s performance in the tournament and in the final itself after their Taça Guanabara win over Vasco da Gama.

A Clarence Seedorf inspired Botafogo claimed a closely fought 1-0 win over Vasco thanks to a late winner from right-back Lucas.

Oswaldo was in a jovial mood as he spoke to reporters during the celebrations and hailed the team´s performance.

"The win is important, it gives us confidence. The development work we did has led us to this moment. There has to be that communion with the crowd, on and off the pitch. Today, the understanding of the fans with the team was perfect."

Oswaldo says that there was no relief in the win, only joy: "There was no room for relief, only happiness. People who choose to work in football, especially coaches, have to live with the pressure.

"We have to be assertive, so I congratulate all football coaches. I´m very happy, I always try to keep the balance, this is part of my job."

The coach also believes that their tournament run, in which they also defeated Flamengo, defines how tough it was for Botafogo.

"Flamengo and Vasco were very tough tasks. We required a lot of concentration, and some great participation from Botafogo fans."



Vasco coach Gaucho denies accusations of negativity


Vasco da Gama coach Gaucho admits that they were beaten by a superior team in Botafogo but denied accusations of being negative as the fallout from the Taça Guanabara continues.

Botafogo secured a hard-fought 1-0 win in the final thanks to a late strike from right-back Lucas.

Gaucho admitted to reporters that Vasco performed poorly and deserved nothing from the game.

"Botafogo were more compact and organised. We have a team in transition and only played together for about two months. We didn´t play well and we gave away too many passes."

But Gaucho rejected suggestions that Vasco were negative in their initial outlook: "We couldn´t rush the game.

"We were missing too many players and the team tried to resolve this in a way that gave them more security."

"We can´t play the same way that Botafogo does. We had to deny them space."

Internacional players: It could´ve been eight

Internacional players Fabrício and Rodrigo Moledo claims that they were well worth their win and say that the result could´ve been even bigger.

This comes after Internacional claimed the Taça Piratini thanks to a resounding 5-0 victory over São Luiz.

The highligh of the day was two superb strikes from star striker Leandro Damião, the latter of which had the crowd rising to their feet in awe of the goal.

Fabrício took the time to speak to reporters during the celebrations and claimed they could´ve scored more.

"We had merit, it could´ve been eight goals. We missed three good chances during the game," said the player.

Rodrigo Moledo also added to debate, claiming that Internacional were deserving of the victory.

"The team is to be congratulated for the win. The goals came naturally. Now we need to win the second stage to win it outright."


D´Alessandro: Internacional will win Taça Farroupilha


Internacional captain Andrés D´Alessandro has sent out a message to rivals claiming that they will complete a clean sweep by winning the Taça Farroupilha.

The Taça Farroupilha is the Campeonato Gaúcho´s second stage final and if Internacional were to win it, they would automatically become Gaúcho champions as the two final winners are to play each other at the end of the campaign.

D´Alessandro was in a bullish mood as he spoke to reporters after Internacional´s Taça Piratini win.

"The rain was a problem, but we became accustomed to it. In Caxias, it was much worse. Everyone is to be congratulated. There is nothing better for a player to be at a club like this, feeling at ease and winning titles.

Dunga was full of praise for his captain and spoke of his leadership as vital to Internacional´s cause.

"I do not like to make comparisons, he is the captain, he has this leadership. He is the one pulling the group together. The others look to and follow D´Alessandro."

D´Alessandro was pleased to hear the praise from his coach and says he is still learning the trade: "Having confidence is the main thing, I try to be a leader. I learned a lot from Guiñazu, Indio and Bolívar."

"I think I´m still learning, I want to be a leader on and off the field. The group has that confidence in me," said the Argentinean.

D´Alessandro also had one final warning for Internacional´s opponents in the Gaúcho: "We will win the Taça Farroupilha."

Liberaron a los 120 barras de Colón

BUENOS AIRES -- Los 120 barrabravas de Colón de Santa Fe que fueron detenidos por agredir a hinchas de River en las inmediaciones del estadio Monumental fueron liberados y regresaron a Santa Fe.

Los barras, que permanecieron detenidos durante algunas horas en la comisaría 51 de esta capital luego de agredir a varios hinchas de River, entre ellos a cinco que fueron internados con heridas de arma blanca en el Hospital Pirovano, fueron dejados en libertad en la noche de ayer y de inmediato emprendieron el regreso hacia su provincia.

Según confiaron a DyN fuentes de esa dependencia, los barras del conjunto "Sabalero" sólo "estuvieron algunas horas en la comisaría y a la noche los largaron".

El grupo de hinchas de Colón fue detenido en la previa del encuentro frente a River, luego de agredir a simpatizantes de River que circulaban por la avenida Del Libertador, a dos cuadras del estadio.

Por ese episodio, cinco hinchas de River debieron ser trasladados al Hospital Pirovano, con heridas de arma blanca de distinta consideración, aunque todos ellos estaban fuera de peligro.

El hecho ocurrió luego de un error en la logística del traslado de los hinchas visitantes, que descendieron de los ómnibus en una de las arterias principales de ingreso de la parcialidad local.

Previamente, el mismo grupo de barras de Colón había protagonizado serios incidentes sobre la autopista General Paz, cuando se bajaron de uno de los micros que los trasladaban y comenzaron a golpear a simpatizantes de River que circulaban en otro ómnibus, y también a los autos que quedaron allí varados.

El 12 de febrero último, cerca de 60 barrabravas de Colón fueron detenidos luego de protagonizar incidentes en un corte que se registraba en el kilómetro 42 del ramal Campana de la autopista Panamericana, cuando intentaron abrirse paso a los tiros entre los vecinos que reclamaban por la falta de luz.

En esa oportunidad, los barras de Colón viajaban rumbo a Santa Fe, luego de la derrota de su equipo ante Lanús por 4-0, en la primera fecha del Torneo Final.

No Vidal in Chile "is good news", says Tabárez

"We have the good fortune that Arturo Vidal is suspended. For us it is good news because he is one of the best midfielders in the world, a complete player", said Tabárez in a statement released Saturday by La Tercera newspaper.

Vidal, midfielder for Juventus in Italy, will be absent for the match between Chile and Peru on March 22 in Lima and then four days later against Uruguay in Santiago owing to his sending off in Chile´s defeat to Ecuador 3-1 last October in a qualifier.

Tabárez emphasized that Chile has very good players and that their coach, Argentinian Jorge Sampaoli who won the 2011 Copa Sudamericana with Universidad de Chile, has preoccupied himself with getting to know his players for the qualifiers.

"The Chile of Sampaoli to me is a spitting image of the Universidad de Chile in the Sudamericana", said Tabárez.

The next two qualifying matches for Uruguay against Paraguay and Chile were deemed "decisive" by Tabarez, as Uruguay comes to these games off defeats against Argentina (3-0) and Bolivia (4-1).

"We come from losing a lot of points and having negative results at all levels. We believe it was a matter of football performance, we try to improve (and) we did in two games with Spain and Poland", he explained.

Uruguay is in fifth position with 12 points in the qualifiers and if they would end today they would not have an automatic berth to the World Cup. Chile is in sixth place with the same amount of points but with a lower goal difference.

Peruvian midfielder Joel Sánchez will appeal his FIFA sanction for doping

"I will appeal the sanction so it will be reduced. It is difficult to determine who is to blame for the positive drug test", said Sánchez to América Noticias.

The 23 year old Sánchez tested positive after a 2014 World Cup qualifier between Peru and Bolivia.

FIFA suspended the player for two years after his test came back positive for Methylhexaneamine, a substance included on the prohibited list by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The suspension period began on January 22, 2013, the date on which the player was provisionally suspended by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

The sanction applies to all games, including exhibition and regular, local and international.

Brazil denounce fans assault of Palmeiras players in Argentina

Paulo Nobre, the president of Palmeiras was very upset over what happened and denounced the fans acts of violence.

A group of Palmeiras fans attacked Palmeiras players this Thursday at the Aeroparque when they were about to board a plane after losing 1-0 to Argentina´s Tigre in the Copa Libertadores.

Goalkeeper Fernando Prass was wounded and received three stitches in his head, the club said in a statement.

In the presence of the general secretary of FIFA, Jerome Valcke, who is touring Brazil, the Brazilian Sports Minister, Aldo Rebelo, said the incident "apart from being regrettable cannot be repeated".

"The clubs, the players, can´t be subjected to this type of violence. The police and the judicial system need to take measures to punish those responsible",

The president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the World Cup, José Maria Marin, also expressed outrage.

""We had the episode in Bolivia and unfortunately now this other tragedy. This cannot go unpunished," he said.

In February, a Bolivian boy of 14 years died in a Libertadores match in the city of Oruro after being hit by a flare thrown by fans of Corinthians, which together with Palmeiras, is one of the most violent group of fans in Brazil.

They are "irrational bandits and not passionate fans who participated in this atrocity," said the president of Palmeiras, Paulo Nobre, in a statement.

Brazil is preparing to welcome this year and next millions of fans for the Confederations Cup in June and the 2014 World Cup.
