Jorginho officially announced as Flamengo´s new manager
Jorginho has been officially announced as Flamengo´s new manager, replacing Dorival Júnior, who was sacked on Saturday. He signed contract with Fla until December 2014.
The 48-year old manager played for Flamengo and other teams, and was in Brazil squad when the Seleção won the World Cup title in 1994.
He started his managerial career at America-RJ in 2006 and was Dunga´s assistant manager until 2010. He would later manage Goiás and Figueirense. Kashima Antlers hired him in 2012.
Jorginho fits in Flamengo´s new policy of not overspending, and fits the club´s idea of having a young manager strongly identified with the club.
The club´s vice-president Wallim Vasconcelos told the official site the following: "Jorginho has a lot of international experience, was part of the national team, is respectable and as a former player he has a history at the club. He is certainly a good name for the club".
Former player Aílton Ferraz has been hired as the new assistant manager and as like Jorginho, he shares an identification with the club.
Chelsea-bound Wallace debuts for Fluminense in 2013
Fluminense´s right-back Wallace made his debut in 2013 as his team beat Audax 1-0 for the Taça Rio, which is the second turn of the Rio de Janeiro State Championship.
The Tricolor had a hard time dealing with the rain and with Audax´s tight defense, Flu´s goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri made several saves.
The winning goal was scored early in the second half by Wellington Nem, after a cross from right-back Bruno.
Bruno felt pain in his thigh a few minutes later and had to be replaced, making room for Wallace, who will join Chelsea in August.
The young player made little impact, although looked motivated and tried to contribute to Fluminense´s plays.
He was recently in Brazil´s squad in the South American Under 20 Championship, but like the rest of the team, Wallace failed to impress and the team were eliminated in the group stage, failing to qualify to the Youth World Cup for the first time since 1979.
Wallace has been struggling to get a place in Fluminense´s starting line-up as he faces competition from Bruno and Wellington Silva.
Paulinho set to miss Brazil friendlies with thigh injury
Corinthians´ midfielder Paulinho has been removed from Brazil´s squad for the upcoming friendlies against Italy and Russia after suffering a left thigh injury that will keep him out of the pitches for 10 days.
Paulinho has been playing as a starter in Brazil´s national team midfielder along with Ramires.
He is widely regarded as one of the best players in Brazil and was part of the Corinthians squad that won the Club World Cup last year.
Brazil´s national team doctor José Luiz Runco affirmed that the injury is not serious but the decision to remove him from the squad was made along with Joaquim Grava from Corinthians.
No replacement will be called up, Paulinho is the second player to miss Brazil´s next games due to injuries.
Lucas Moura was recently removed from the squad with a knee injury. São Paulo´s in-form Osvaldo was called up to replace him.
Brazil play against Italy in Genéve on March 21 and against Italy in London on March 25.
Campeonato Carioca: Flu beat Audax, Vasco lose at home
The opening round of the Taça Rio was completed yesterday with two games. Fluminense beat Audax 1-0 while Vasco were beaten at home 0-1 by Volta Redonda.
Vasco played first, at São Januário against Volta Redonda. The cruzmaltino dominated most of the game, but made too many errors, annoying their fans.
Voltaço scored their goal early in the first half with André Alves and were able to keep their lead until the end. They played a very tactically organized game, frustrating the opponent.
Fluminense played later, against newly-promoted Audax, at the Engenhão stadium. It was a difficult match as Audax played all out defense during most of the game.
The first half was poor with few chances for each team, but Flu improved in second half, eventually scoring their only goal with Bruno.
Bruno had an injury and was eventually subbed off, allowing Chelsea-bound Wallace to make his debut in 2013. He had little impact though.
Vasco will meet Nova Iguaçu on Wednesday, while Fluminense play a few days later, on Saturday, against Duque de Caxias.
Abel Braga admits Fluminense did not play well against Audax
Fluminense coach Abel Braga admitted his side did not play well in their 1-0 win over Audax in the first round of the Taça Rio.
A second-half goal from Wellington Nem proved enough for the Tricolor to claim all three points in a rainy encounter at the Engenhão stadium on Sunday evening.
Audax made the Brasileirão champions work hard for their victory with Brazil goalkeeper Diego Cavelieri being forced into action on a number of occasions during the first half.
Speaking at a press conference after the game, a relieved Abel Braga said: ´´I´m happy with the win. It was important not to concede a goal. The team will now start to regain their confidence.
´´We did not play well, but we deserved to win because we created more opportunities.´´
Fluminense´s next game is in Taça Rio against Duque de Caxias at the Estádio Raulino de Oliveira on Sunday.
