Mjaeh problemet er jo nok at Leo ikke har spillet for en af de store klubber i Brasilien - selvom han godt nok var på kontrakt i Santos såvidt jeg kan forstå...men han slog aldrig igennem der - man skal have været inde over en af de store for at slå sit navn fast i brasiliansk fodbold.....

Wolfsburg midfielder Josué set to join Atlético Mineiro

Josué´s contract with German team Wolfsburg has been terminated by mutual consent. The 33-year old midfielder had been playing in Germany since 2007, he played 164 games there.

He told Wolfsburg´s site: "Of course I´m sad for leaving Wolfsburg, but this move is a big challenge for me. It was wonderful time at the club, with many good and bad moments. I wish the team all the best and I´m confident they will achieve a lot of success".

Josué started his career at Goiás, but became famous at São Paulo, where he formed a very efficient defensive midfield pair with Mineiro.The midfielder´s best season was in 2005, when São Paulo won Copa Libertadores and the Club World Cup.

The German club´s official site announced that he is joining Atlético Mineiro on a two-year contract.

He was also capped many times, having participated in Copa América in 2007 and the Confederations Cup in 2009

Campeonato Carioca: Nova Iguaçu beat Vasco

Vasco lost their second game in a row in Taça Rio as they were defeated 0-2 by Nova Iguaçu at the Raulino de Oliveira stadium in Volta Redonda.

The game was technically poor although both teams were desperate to win, Vasco were nervous, misplacing many passes while Nova Iguaçu waited for oppornities to counter-attack.

The chance finally came near the end of the first when Léo Salino opened the scoring for Nova Iguaçu.

Vasco did not improve much in second half although Carlos Alberto wasted two good chances to equalize.

Léo Salino made things worse for Vasco when he extended Nova Iguaçu´s lead a few minutes before the final whistle.

Vasco fans demanded that manager Gaúcho be sacked as the team see the chances of reaching the Taça Rio semifinals become less likely.

The board listened to them, sacking him shortly after the game.

The cruzmaltino face Olaria next Wednesday, while Nova Iguaçu play against Olaria on the same day.

Vasco sack manager Gaúcho

Vasco sacked manager Gaúcho following the 0-2 defeat to Nova Iguaçu for the second turn of the Rio de Janeiro State Championship.

Gaúcho was appointed as Vasco´s manager in November, but he failed to achieve impressive results.

The announcement was made by executive director René Simões shortly after the game, which was Vasco´s third defeat in a row in the competition.

The decision is likely to please Vasco fans, who demanded his him to be sacked as Vasco were getting beaten by Nova Iguaçu. Gaúcho is likely to stay at Vasco, but in a different role.

Paulo Autuori is Vasco´s preferred option to replace Gaúcho, while Cristóvão Borges and former Flamengo manager Dorival Júnior are also deemed interesting options.

Vasco´s technical director Ricardo Gomes has a good relationship with Paulo Autuori, which could facilitate a deal, despite Autuori´s high salary demands.

The team´s next game will be played next Wednesday against Olaria, for the Rio de Janeiro State Championship.

Rodolfo extends contract with Flamengo

Flamengo´s 19-year old midfielder Rodolfo has extended his contract with the club until December 2017, the new agreement was signed yesterday.

Rodolfo was owned by Madureira, and was at Flamengo in a loan deal, but the rubro-negro will now control his full transfer rights.

Flamengo have also bought 25% of his economic rights, while Madureira will keep the remaining 75%.

The midfielder has impressed this season so far and was wanted by other clubs, encouraging Flamengo to sign him permanently.

Rodolfo is happy with the new deal, he told Fox Sports Brasil: "I intend to keep doing what I have done so far, I´ll keep showing my football to the fans and the manager. I want to establish myself in the first team".

The buyout fee for foreign clubs is now 50 million Euros, he is the second promising player to renew his contract with the club. His teammate Rafinha signed a new contract last month.

Zambrano excluido de la selección peruana por lesión

Lima, 20 de marzo de 2013.- El defensa Carlos Zambrano, jugador del Eintracht Frankfurt alemán, fue desconvocado hoy por lesión de la selección de fútbol de Perú que se enfrentará el viernes a Chile, en partido por las eliminatorias al Mundial de Brasil 2014.

"El jugador Carlos Zambrano ha sido desconvocado; en su lugar ha sido convocado el jugador Jesús Álvarez", se informó hoy en la cuenta oficial de Twitter de la selección peruana.

El médico de Perú, Julio Segura, ya había señalado que Zambrano podía tardar una semana más en recuperarse de una lesión en el hombro que sufrió en el último partido que disputó en la Bundesliga, por lo que fue sometido a nuevas pruebas médicas en las últimas horas.

Los medios locales han señalado que el jugador será reemplazado en la defensa titular de Perú por Christian Ramos, jugador del Juan Áurich local.

La selección peruana también mantiene en duda la participación del centrocampista Juan Manuel Vargas, jugador del Génova italiano, quien llegó a Lima con una fatiga muscular y ha sido sometido a trabajos de recuperación física.

Si Vargas no logra recuperarse plenamente, será reemplazado en el partido contra Chile por Paolo Hurtado, figura del Paços de Ferreira portugués.

"Llego en buen momento por las cosas que me vienen pasando en Portugal, es el reflejo de mi trabajo y, si me toca estar, trabajaré para que la selección gane. He venido trabajando hace mucho tiempo para conseguir estas cosas y gracias a Dios estoy acá", declaró Hurtado.

Santiago de Chile, 20 marzo de 2013.- El seleccionador de Chile, el argentino Jorge Sampaoli, avisó hoy que Perú, su rival el próximo viernes, se juega en ese partido buena parte de las opciones de llegar al Mundial de Brasil 2014, aunque recalcó que los puntos también son fundamentales para las aspiraciones chilenas.

"Perú se juega la última carta que tiene y de local se hace muy fuerte, pero tenemos la obligación de ganar porque queremos clasificar" al Mundial", dijo Sampaoli en una rueda de prensa.

El argentino explicó que estos días ha trabajado para concienciar a sus jugadores sobre la relevancia del partido en Lima porque, en estos momentos, Chile está fuera de los sitios que dan acceso al Mundial.

Chile ocupa la sexta posición con doce puntos, cuatro más que Perú, que marcha octavo, en el penúltimo lugar.

"Hoy estamos fuera del torneo más importante y hay que ir a buscarlo", señaló Sampaoli, que el viernes debutará oficialmente con la selección chilena.

El técnico tiene ya prácticamente definida la alineación titular, en la que muy probablemente no estará el mediapunta Matías Fernández, que llegó tocado desde Italia y está siguiendo un tratamiento para ver si puede jugar algunos minutos.

Con Jorge Valdivia descartado por lesión y Fernández renqueante, el seleccionador chileno le restó importancia a la ausencia de un recambio natural en la zona de creación y aseguró que cuenta con alternativas para esa zona del campo como Charles Aránguiz y Rodrigo Millar.

Uno que tiene un puesto asegurado en el equipo titular es Alexis Sánchez, un jugador "determinante" para la Roja gracias a su polivalencia en ataque, según destacó el entrenador.

"Alexis puede jugar en los dos extremos y de delantero centro", señaló Sampaoli, quien adelantó que el ariete del Barcelona se moverá con libertad por la zona de ataque para aprovechar su capacidad de desborde.

El dibujo táctico que plasmará Sampaoli en la cancha dependerá del planteamiento de la selección peruana, ya que el técnico quiere tener superioridad en defensa.

De este modo, explicó que si Perú juega con tres atacantes, como ha venido haciendo en los últimos partidos, plantará una zaga de cuatro hombres.

Si Perú juega con dos jugadores arriba, Chile podría plantear una línea defensiva de tres, como hacía habitualmente el exseleccionador Marcelo Bielsa, un referente para Sampaoli.

El seleccionador prevé un partido de "alta intensidad" ante un combinado peruano peligroso al contragolpe y con mucho poderío en la mitad de la cancha.

Para Pellegrini es importante explotar la gran generación de jugadores que posee la selección

Santiago de Chile, 20 marzo de 2013.- El chileno Manuel Pellegrini, entrenador del Málaga español, afirmó hoy en Santiago que su país tiene "una gran generación" de jugadores para luchar por una plaza en próximo Mundial de Brasil 2014 y manifestó su deseo de que la Roja lo logre, de la mano del técnico Jorge Sampaoli.

"Desgraciadamente en estos momentos estamos fuera de la clasificación", dijo Pellegrini en el aeropuerto de Santiago, a su llegada a Chile para descansar unos días, aprovechando el receso de las ligas europeas por las eliminatorias mundialistas.

A su juicio, para Chile el camino hacia Brasil ha sido "un proceso bastante movido en relación a lo que se comenzó", en alusión al buen arranque del equipo, que incluso lideró un tiempo la competición y después decayó, a tal punto que el seleccionador Claudio Borghi fue destituido.

Jorge Sampaoli recibió a la selección en el sexto lugar de la clasificación, con sólo doce puntos a su haber.

"Ojalá tengamos la capacidad futbolística, porque es muy importante para Chile llegar a un Mundial", manifestó Pellegrini, para quien todos los técnicos quieren jugar a la ofensiva y ganar, pero lo importante es que cuando se juega, "el nivel de los jugadores esté en su mejor momento".

"Creo que Chile cuenta con una gran generación (de jugadores) y ojalá que Sampaoli lo consiga", remarcó el exentrenador del Real Madrid y el Villarreal, que también elogió al delantero Alexis Sánchez, que ha sido criticado en España por el nivel que ha mostrado en la actual campaña del Barcelona.

"Me parece que Alexis está viviendo un sueño, primero por estar en el mejor equipo del mundo, como es Barcelona y, segundo, está con una generación de jugadores que lo han ganado todo", dijo.

Sánchez, en su opinión, "es un jugador importante. Cuando se está en ese nivel, obviamente que se reciben críticas, pero creo que Alexis ha sabido absorberlas. Nuevamente está siendo titular y creo que tiene un gran futuro", manifestó el ´Ingeniero´, que se declaró "muy contento" por el presente de su club, el Málaga.

"Muy contento, porque estar con el Málaga entre los ocho mejores equipos de Europa no era una misión fácil. La gente me ha apoyado mucho, está toda la ciudad contenta, así que vamos a ver hasta donde nos permite llegar", dijo Pellegrini, cuyo equipo se enfrentará al Borussia Dormundt alemán en los cuartos de final de la Liga de Campeones de la UEFA.

"Ha sido una temporada bastante difícil, el equipo ha respondido en todos los frentes, tanto en la liga, donde estamos permanentemente en lugares de (clasificación a) Europa, como en la Champions, donde hemos logrado estar entre los ocho mejores y ojalá podamos hacer semifinales", concluyó

The Saints get their Pope

Crowds thronging Saint Peter´s Square on Wednesday to welcome the new Pope knew that, quite apart from the fact his predecessor is still alive, they were witnessing an historic event. Francisco I (as he´s known on his home continent) is the first Latin American to become leader of the world´s Catholics, and also the first Jesuit. Of course, everyone who had their Papal fact-checking priorities right had only one question on their minds; which football team does this Argentine Pope support?

The answer´s a fitting one really, because Jorge Mario Bergoglio is not only a fan, but a paid-up member of San Lorenzo de Almagro, a club named after a saint (after a local priest helped the club´s founders find a plot of ground to train on), and known - among other nicknames - as El Santo, ´the Saint´. Perhaps also fittingly for a man widely lauded for his humility, San Lorenzo are also the only one of Argentina´s ´Big Five´ clubs to never have won the Copa Libertadores.

That latter fact has inevitably already been the source of various jokes from fans of other clubs, not least of course because photographs of a high-ranking priest lifting a precious metal-plated cup aren´t too hard to find (just add the caption ´this is the only cup you´ll be seeing´... you get the idea), but the club have been quick to act on the enormous publicity boost this appointment has given them, tweeting a scanned image of Bergoglio´s membership card shortly after his confirmation as pontiff. Although his membership (the current membership, at least) only began in 2008, he´s been a fan for much longer; when he was a young boy, his father played for the club´s basketball team, and took him to watch the football side regularly.

Suddenly finding himself rather overshadowed is the man who, before Wednesday, used to enjoy the title of ´World´s Most Famous San Lorenzo Fan´ - Viggo Mortensen. The actor spent a large part of his childhood in Buenos Aires (he speaks fluent Spanish and even starred in an Argentine film, ´Todos Tenemos Un Plan´, last year), and has been a San Lorenzo fan since then, and until recently, wrote a guest column on the club´s website. In May 2012, he was almost arrested in Dulles Airport, Washington, after celebrating a goal in a match he was watching on his laptop rather too enthusiastically.

Viggo´s other expressions of support are a little less controversial. He recently put his name to a UK flower seed company´s product after they agreed to release packets of petunia seeds coloured in the club´s blue and red for charity (don´t go away, I´m not making this up), and if you´re a film award ceremony watcher, just pay attention to small details like the colours of his tie next time you notice him at one.

Of course, vitally important through all of this is that San Lorenzo aren´t the only football team hoping to benefit from the preferences of the new Pope. Because seemingly every Argentine football fan has, over the last few days, been eager to point out that the country´s footballing trilogy is now complete; Diego Maradona has long been referred to as ´God´, and Lionel Messi as his heir, or ´the son´, an analogy helped by the fact that the Spanish word for ´Messiah´ (´Mesías´) is so similar to his surname. They´ve now got a Pope to put alongside those two.

Argentines, even at the best of times, don´t need much of an excuse to blow their national team´s trumpet and insist that any number of factors mean they´re destined to win the next World Cup. I was told by one fan before the last World Cup that the fact that it was 2010 - a year ending in Diego Maradona´s shirt number, with him as manager - meant the trophy would be theirs in South Africa. What makes this latest theory even more beautiful is that one of the other candidates for the Papacy was Brazilian. And where´s next year´s World Cup being held? Brazil! When they put it like that, it really does start to look somewhat inevitable, doesn´t it?

The fact that no sitting Pope has seen his country win the World Cup since the second World War has either passed these people by, or is being ignored. But let´s not let that get in the way of a nice prediction. And if you ever wish you were living in South America and writing about football for a living, just bear in mind I´m going to have to put up with these kind of predictions and jokes on an almost daily basis between now and Brazil 2014.

As the incoming Pope has some of his personal effects, including items of San Lorenzo memorabilia, shipped over to his new home in the Vatican, the club have also sent him a letter expressing their pride and congratulating him. They´ve also had a special one-off shirt made for this Saturday´s match against Colón de Santa Fe, with a halo over the club badge - a motif that´s been used before, in 2000-01, when they won their last domestic title.

It´s unlikely that any good results for the rest of San Lorenzo´s season will be directly influenced by the Almighty - who´s surely got more important things to worry about - but highly probable, of course, that the press at least will be referring to miracles with every late winner and moments of divine inspiration when a forward pulls off something outrageous.

As for those who prefer to look for Francis I´s influence on the national team, they´ll get their first chance to see whether Argentina can break that poor run of the Papacy in international competition on Friday night, when Lionel Messi and company play Venezuela in the World Cup qualifying campaign. The visitors will be hoping it´s only the eleven opposing players they´re up against.

Ríos: "Hoy estamos mucho mejor"

MONTEVIDEO -- El centrocampista de la selección de fútbol de Uruguay, Egidio Arévalo Ríos, destacó que el equipo tiene en la actualidad mejor ritmo de competencia que meses atrás y que saldrá desde el inicio a buscar la victoria frente a Paraguay en el partido del próximo día 22 por las Eliminatorias Sudamericanas.

"En los partido que jugamos en las últimas jornadas no teníamos el ritmo de competencia que te de la continuidad. Hoy estamos mucho mejor", aseguró el centrocampista del italiano Palermo.

Egidio Arévalo, fijo en el equipo celeste, afirmó que la selección uruguaya "saldrá desde el inicio" a buscar la victoria frente a Paraguay "pero tratando de mantener el equilibrio, que es fundamental", agregó.

Los celestes solo ganaron uno de los últimos doce puntos que disputaron en las eliminatorias sudamericanas tras empatar 1-1 con Ecuador en casa y perder a domicilio frente a Colombia 4-0, Argentina 3-0 y Bolivia 4-1.

Tras la sucesión de tropiezos los uruguayos cayeron a la quinta posición en la clasificación con doce puntos y necesitan la victoria para recuperar el ánimo, en tanto que Paraguay es el colista con siete.

Tras recibir a los paraguayos en la undécima jornada de las eliminatorias sudamericanas, Uruguay visitará el 26 de marzo a Chile en la duodécima jornada.
