Santos captain Léo praises young forward Giva
Following two goals for young forward Giva in a 2-1 victory over Mirassol on Thursday night, Santos captain Léo has spoken glowingly of the youngster´s recent progress.
Giva, 20, was integrated into the first-team squad last month after helping the club´s Under-19 team to success in the prestigious Copa São Paulo youth tournament.
Now impressing for the senior side, Léo for one has been impressed and hopes that the club´s other emerging talents can use the striker´s attitude as an example to follow.
He told reporters: “Giva is really at ease [in the first-team]. Of the kids, he is the best. He he has confidence and maturity, he´s scoring goals and helping with the marking, securing the ball from the front.
“Of the kids that have come up, he is the best prepared. I hope the others can use him as an example. It´s a good generation that is always wanting to help.”
Giva signed for Santos in May 2012, joining the Paulista side from Baiano side Vítoria
Criciuma set to sign Daniel Carvalho
Brasileirão side Criciuma have announced on Friday that former CSKA Moscow midfielder Daniel Carvalho will undergo medical tests at the club in the coming days, with a view to signing a one-year contract with the newly promoted Serie A side.
Daniel Carvalho, 30, has now not played competitive football since October 2012 when he last represented Palmeiras before the end of his contract in December.
Criciuma, though, are willing to give the talented playmaker another shot at top flight football.
An important member of the CSKA that won the UEFA Cup in 2005, Daniel was also a regular member of the Brazil squad in the early period of Dunga´s management.
Since his initial success, though, he has often struggled to maintain suitable physical conditioning and spent long spells on the sideline with injury.
Criciuma will play in the Brasileirão Série A this season, having achieved promotion last season with a second place finish in the Brazilian second tier.
Brazilian Série A schedule announced
The Brazilian Football Confederation has announced the Série A schedule for the 2013 season.
The competition will start on Sunday, May 26, a week after the state leagues finals, and will feature 20 teams. Some games are likely to be moved to Saturday, May 25.
The league will be played until December 8.
As the Confederations Cup will be played in June, the Brasileirão will stop between June 9 and July 7.
The top four teams will qualify to Libertadores, while the bottom four are relegated to Série B.
A change in relation to 2012 is that there will not be any derbies on matchday 38, although those derbies were deemed useful to prevent clubs from losing on purpose to harm a rival.
The game between Santos and Flamengo will be played at the Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasília, as a test event for the stadium, which is being renovated for the World Cup.
Current champions Fluminense debut against newly-promoted Atlético Paranaense.
Vasco appoint Paulo Autuori as new manager
Former Qatar manager Paulo Autuori has been appointed as the new coach of Vasco, replacing Gaúcho, who was sacked this week.
Paulo Autuori is a very successful manager, having won the Libertadores twice, as manager of Cruzeiro and São Paulo, as well as the Club World Cup in 2005.
The new Vasco manager has also won the Brazilian League in 1995, and has worked in Japan, Peru, Portugal and Qatar.
His most recent work in Brazil was in 2009, when he managed Grêmio, without achieving the same success he had at other clubs.
Paulo Autuori is bringing his own staff to Vasco, namely assistant manager Renê Weber and fitness coach Gilvan Santos. The new manager accepted to lower his salary demands to fit into Vasco´s financial situation.
Vasco also managed to keep director Ricardo Gomes, who threatened to leave after Gaúcho was sacked.
Paulo Autuori´s first game as the team´s new manager will be played next Wednesday when Vasco face Olaria for the Rio de Janeiro State League.
