Honduras - 14 Runde

Belize, Trinidad to meet Saturday

BELMOPAN, Belize - Belize and visiting Trinidad & Tobago will continue their preparations for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, when they face-off on Saturday evening at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan. According to FIFA records, it will be the second-ever meeting between the squads and the first since a scoreless draw on September 10, 2010, in the Central American nation.

Trinidad qualified for the Gold Cup for the first time since the 2007 edition, finishing as runner-up to Cuba in the 2012 Caribbean Cup after dropping a 1-0 decision in the final.

Co-head coach Hutson Charles wants to see each member of his 19-man squad compete for places in the biennial confederation championship with a good showing against Belize.

"This game is a good opportunity for the players to go out there and perform, not only to try and bring home a good result for the country but to also try and stake a claim for themselves for the final squad that will be going to the Gold Cup," Charles told TTFF Media. "The game itself is one we will be using to see how some of the new players coming back into the squad fit into our plans and then we will know how we can move forward from here."

North East Stars striker Cornell Glen, hoping to add to his international goal tally of 35, will get his first chance to appear for the national team since November 2010 in a Caribbean Cup encounter against Martinique.

"It´s good to be back in the national team," commented Glen, who has 62 caps. "It´s always a privilege to wear the national colours."

"Personally I will like to get among the goals again but most importantly I want to bring something to the team that can help take us back up because we´ve been suffering for some time. The team did good at the Caribbean Cup and now I want to be part of the effort to lift the level, especially in our attacking play as we look ahead to the Gold Cup."

Belize qualified for its first Gold Cup after finishing fourth in January´s UNCAF Copa Centroamericana. The Belizeans got their first-ever Copa Centroamericana win after 23 attempts by defeating Nicaragua 2-1 in the group phase, before losing to Honduras 1-0 in the third place match.

"The Belize team is very excited about this game," said Dean Flowers, Belize´s team manager. "We had some pretty good performances in the UNCAF tournament and now we want to put on a good show and get a good result at home against Trinidad and Tobago.

Campeonato Carioca: Flamengo, Fluminense held to draws

The second round of the Taça Rio continued yeaterday with five matches, featuring Flamengo and Fluminense.

The Tricolor played first against Duque de Caxias at the Raulino de Oliveira in Volta Redonda. They were missing several key players such as Jean, Fred and Diego Cavalieri, who are in Europe representing the Brazilian national team.

Deco returned to the first team while Chelsea-bound Wallace started for the first time.

Flu´s performance was disappointing though, despite dominating most of the game, while Duque de Caxias were happy to just get a point, getting pleased with the 0-0 result.

Jorginho made his debut as Flamengo´s manager as the rubro-negro faced Boavista at the Engenhão stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Flamengo failed to create many chances and were booed off by their own fans, while Boavista barely posed any threat.

The game also ended in a 0-0 draw, Flamengo still have not won any game in Taça Rio as they lost 2-3 to Resende in their first game.

Bernard wants to play all Atlético Mineiro games

Atlético Mineiro´s winger Bernard affirmed that he wants to play all his club´s games in order to increase his visibility.

Bernard has only missed one of the 10 games Atlético Mineiro played in 2013, but he feels he has to play all games, he said "I want to always be playing, it´s important to get visibility, to have a good sequence of games, even to return to my best as quickly as possible. It´s very good to have a good sequence of games".

Atlético Mineiro´s manager Cuca has not decided the line-up for Atlético Mineiro´s game against Nacional today, but Bernard feels he is ready to play, he said "I am always ready but it´s up to manager Cuca to decide, we already talked about it, and if he needs, I´ll play the game, let´s see what will be his criteria".

Cuca has, however, already decided that Ronaldinho Gaúcho will be rested and other players might not face Nacional.

Atlético Mineiro are currently in second place in the Minas Gerais State Championship, and in first place in their group in Copa Libertadores.

Flamengo manager Jorginho wants new signings for the Brasileirão

Flamengo´s new manager Jorginho feels the team need new signings, following the 0-0 draw against Boavista for the Rio de Janeiro State Championship.

He feels the squad is too young and lacks the experience needed for the Brazilian national league. Jorginho said: "We have a relatively young squad, it´s not easy to given them too much responsibility. We will need new signings for the Brazilian League".

The manager also said: "We have to stay calm, work with the squad we have, it´s possible to have good results".

Jorginho added that patience is needed, he said: "Maybe the results won´t be so good in the short term, but if we are smart, we need to recognize that the board has credibility to do a medium to long term work. We have to think in long term".

He also talked about how the current board is changing the financial situation of the club, Jorginho said: It´s not good to have employees that are not paid when it´s due. The payment of salaries isn´t delayed here anymore".

Flamengo are currently in sixth place in Group B in the Taça Rio, which is the second turn of the Rio de Janeiro´s State Championship.

The rubro-negro will face Santos in May, in their debut in the Brazilian League

The heat is on Mexico, de la Torre in so many ways

Posted on March 23, 2013 by Michael Lewis

So, you thought the United States was under plenty of pressure to produce a win against Costa Rica on Friday night?

Now, that’s nothing compared to what Mexico faces when it returns home to face its fanatical public nd the United States in what has to be a must, must, must win World Cup qualifying game for El Tri on Tuesday.

A pair of lackluster results to the supposed kings of CONCACAF will do that.

The Mexicans started the CONCACAF hexagonal with a rather lackluster scoreless draw with Jamaica at Azteca Stadium on Feb. 6, one of only a handful of times that the opposition walked away with a qualifying point. Moreover, Mexico did not look like Mexico and you could make a valid point that the Reggae Boyz deserved to win more than the hosts.

On Friday, Mexico grabbed a 2-0 advantage at Honduras and allowed the heat wilt away their lead and eventually they settled for a 2-2 tie in 105-degree heat in San Pedro Sula. The visitors went down hill after their two best attacking players, Javier (Chicharito) Hernandez and Giovani dos Santos were forced from the game with cramps in the second half.

Saying that, what happened to El Tri’s much vaunted supporting cast?

Mexican fans always expect much of their National Team. Given what has been accomplished the past several years, the expectations are even greater these days.

The achievements include an Olympic gold medal in last year’s London Summer Games, the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2011, a third-place finish in the U-20 FIFA World Cup and two consecutive CONCACAF Gold Cup titles.

This is supposed to be a golden generation of Mexican soccer players. But it’s one thing to say it, it’s another to prove it on the field.

Except for a few flashes of brilliance against Honduras, we haven’t seen that much out of this team.

Mexican coach Jose Manuel de la Torre was supposed to be the pragmatic coach to put many of the Mexicans’ problems in the past. Well, during this qualifying cycle, something has been missing.

Think of it:

Two games, two draws, two points.

Not what you would think you would get from the kings of CONCACAF.

But it’s incredible what a win will do for public perception, confidence and even saving one’s job.

If Mexico defeats the U.S. — now if that confrontation doesn’t motivate El Tri nothing will — many of the negativity will be forgotten, at least until the next qualifying run in June.

But if El Tri manages only a tie — or a worse loses at their so-called invincible arena — heads could roll. And it wouldn’t be the first time that it occurred during a dry spell in World Cup qualifying.

Javier Aguirre twice was brought in to rescue Mexico’s flagging hopes — in the 2002 and 2010 competitions and he did the trick.

I don’t know if Aguirre would want to return for a third time to be a miracle worker, but the Mexico Football Federation has a history of not being afraid to make moves for flagging sides, even this supposed talented team.

One thing: I am quite surprised that Mexico did not schedule Tuesday’s encounter against the U.S. during the day, to use all the gamesmanship it could muster. The altitude will always be there. But the Mexican heat and the smog — factories are churning away full time during daylight hours — would be key factors to help the home side.

Every team uses gamesmanship — from Honduras playing in the heat of San Pedro Sula to the U.S. hosting Mexico in Columbus, Ohio.

If the Mexicans fail to accrue the full three points on Tuesday, they will only have themselves to blame — not just on the field, but failing to use gamesmanship that they have been masters of through the years.
