Belize, Trinidad play to scoreless draw

BELMOPAN, Belize - Belize and visiting Trinidad & Tobago played to a 0-0 draw in a CONCACAF Gold Cup warm-up match Saturday at the FFB Stadium. It was the second goalless draw between the two sides in two all-time meetings.

The encounter produced no shortage of action, but neither side could find the back of the net despite the presence of veteran players with proven offensive credentials.

Deon McCauley, who tops the scoring table in 2014 CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying with 11 goals, played nearly the entire game for Belize. The potent attacking Trinidad duo of Kenwyne Jones and Cornell Glen were paired together up front for sixty-six minutes.

Glen had two opportunities to score in the opening 20 minutes. Both efforts, however, went just wide of the mark.

After 30 minutes, McCauley dragged a shot inches wide of the left post for the host´s best chance of the game.

Port Vale midfielder Chris Birchall was outstanding throughout the night for the Soca Warriors and came close four minutes before the interval.

The second half was marked by the 75th minute ejections of Trinidad´s Devorn Jorsling and Tyrone Pandy of Belize.

Afterwards, Keyon Edwards forced a save from Belize goalkeeper with a low drive from outside the box.

The 2012 Caribbean Cup runner-up nearly grabbed a winner two minutes from time, but could not connect following a goalmouth scramble.

Trinidad travels to South America for a friendly against Peru on Tuesday, while Belize will be idle.

Former Inter Milan striker Adriano needs treatment, says Flamengo director

Flamengo´s Director of Football Paulo Pelaipe ruled out signing former Inter Milan striker Adriano and added that the Imperador needs treatment.

Adriano has also recently offered himself to Palmeiras, but the Paulista club decided not to sign him.

Paulo Pelaipe told Rádio Globo the following about the striker: "Adriano needs a psychiatrist, he needs treatment. This Adriano of recent years can´t play for Flamengo. He is ruining everything".

The director also added: "Unfortunately, when it comes to Brazilian football, Flamengo don´t regard Adriano as a player anymore. He needs treatment".

Adriano had a very successful career, shining at Flamengo, Parma and Inter Milan, but he went downhill since his father died.

He briefly regained his old form in 2009, when he helped Flamengo win the Brazilian title and nearly got called up for Brazil´s 2010 World Cup squad.

The striker recently had spells at Roma, Corinthians and Flamengo, but failed to make any positive impact.

Campeonato Carioca: Seedorf is sent off as Botafogo beat Madureira

Botafogo beat Madureira 2-1 to remain in first place in Group A in Taça Rio, which is the second turn fo the Rio de Janeiro State Championship.

The match was played at Bangu´s Moça Bonita stadium, the game was more notable for the poor refereeing than for the football played by the teams.

It was a fairly uneventful game until the 30th minute, when referee Georg Bennett ruled a penalty for Botafogo, only to change his mind and rule that actually it was not a penalty.

The decision annoyed Botafogo players, including Dutch star Seedorf, who would make the assist for Dória´s goal shortly before the first half was over.

Madureira managed to equalize the game in the second half with Jean, but Seedorf placed Botafogo ahead again.

The Dutchman was subbed off near the end of the game, but left the pitch from the side deemed wrong by the referee and was thus carded. He complained about the decision and was given his second yellow card.

Elsewhere, Volta Redonda beat Friburguense 1-0 at the Raulino de Oliveira.

Dely Valdes: Jamaica did not pressure enough

His team stole a point at The Office in Kingston, Jamaica on Friday, but Panama national coach Julio Dely Valdes was a little disappointed his team came away with a 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw.

“I believe the tie here in Jamaica is very important although we came here to win and taking a point is crucial … and any team that comes to play in Kingston is going to have a rough time because Jamaica is a good football team,” Valdes said through an interpreter to the Jamaica Observer.

“I was surprised how Jamaica played. I expected them to come out in their classic style play which they did, but the only thing I was expecting, which they did not do, was pressure more on the defensive court and high press.”

Los Canaleros (0-0-2, two points) will host Honduras (1-0-1, four) in its qualifier on Tuesday, while the Reggae Boyz (0-0-2, two) will visit Costa Rica (0-1-1, one) the same day.

Jones out of US WCQ with sprained ankle

Midfielder Jermaine Jones is out of the U.S.-Mexico World Cup qualifier in Mexico City on Tuesday.

Jones suffered a sprained left ankle during the U.S.’s 1-0 win over Costa Rica in Commerce City, Colo. on Friday night.

The injury left the Americans with 22 players for the match.

Among the possible replacements for Jones are Maurice Edu, who has partnered with central midfielder Michael Bradley before, Kyle Beckerman and Sacha Kljestan.

The U.S. (1-1-0, three points) enters the match in second place in the CONCACAF hexagonal while Mexico (0-0-2, two) faces a must-win situation at Azteca Stadium at home.

Surgery to keep Nosworthy out for four months

Injured central defender Nyron Nosworthy will be able to return to the Reggae Boyz fold in about four months if his surgery is successful.

The 31-year-old Watford central defender had to be replaced after suffering a lower right leg injury in the first half of Jamaica’s World Cup qualifier against Panama on Friday last, at the National Stadium, in a game marked by very rough play.

Medical examinations subsequently revealed that he had suffered an Achilles tendon injury which will require surgery.

Nosworthy, who capped 10 times for the Reggae Boyz, will have the surgery done in England and was flown home.

Once the surgery is done, according to the medical report, the Achilles tendon will take six weeks to heal and another eight to 10 weeks of rehabilitation for him to return to full fitness.

His place in the squad to face Costa Rica on Tuesday was taken by Harbour View defender Montrose Phinn.

“The Federation made all the arrangements for Nyron’s comfortable return to the UK and his club. We have sent a full medical report from our team to the club whose medical team will examine in consultation with their specialists," Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) General Secretary Raymond Grant said.

“Our management team is in constant contact with his club and will continue to monitor his progress,” Grant said.

Nosworthy had formed a solid central defensive partnership with his former club mate Adrian Mariappa with their almost telepathic understanding playing an important role in Jamaica’s historic draw with Mexico on February 6, as they blunted the threat of Manchester United star Javier ´Chicharito´ Hernandez.

Coach Theodore Whitmore acknowledged the value of Nosworthy to the unit but said there was enough strength in the squad to get the job done against Costa Rica on Tuesday.

“What Nosworthy brought to the team was obvious. He was a really valuable member of the squad as his partnership with Mariappa was important to our defensive strength but we have a strong squad.

“We have players who can step up and do the job. Jermaine Taylor was a starter in central defence before both players came in and only a suspension due to cards made him ineligible to play in our first qualifier against Guatemala and Mariappa and Nosworthy made the positions their own,” Whitmore said.

Whitmore even said that this situation could provide the team with the opportunity to show its depth.

“In the same way that Nosworthy and Mariappa made use of their opportunities, Taylor or whoever comes can make the position his own and improve the competition in the squad. This would be a very healthy situation for us,” Whitmore added.

Besides Nosworthy, forward Jermaine Beckford also suffered an injury in Friday’s game but is fit enough to play.

The Huddersfield Town striker suffered a “closed fracture of the fourth metacarpal of the left hand” but has been cleared to train and play in a splint.

Reggae Boyz get minds right for Costa Rica

Audley Boyd, Assistant Editor - Sport

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica:

FOLLOWING their disappointing 1-1 home draw with Panama on Friday night, Jamaica´s Reggae Boyz added a notch to their mental and physical recovery for tomorrow night´s CONCACAF Final Round World Cup Qualifying (WCQ) football match against Costa Rica.

The team went through a 90-minute training session, working on maintaining its shape, especially where it concerns the central midfield pair of Rodolph Austin and Marvin Elliott.

This follows several discussions after the Panama game, and a pool session in which the Boyz were engaged on Saturday evening, hours after landing in this Central American country.

"It was good, they realised and agreed with what we discussed," said Alfredo Montesso, the Jamaica senior men´s national team´s assistant coach.

"We have been moving too much inside of the field and lose the shape of the team, especially when we lose the ball we were not established, we were not compact and organised on the pitch and when that happens we are always going to be unbalanced in the game," he observed.

"So that is what we were trying to set with Austin and Marvin and they reacted pretty well, especially towards the end of the training session.

"They were keeping more composure and every time at least one of them was central in the middle of the pitch to give options for the team to move the ball from the zone of the pressure, this is what we were talking to them about," he noted of corrections to deficiencies that saw Jamaica squander its lead to give up two points at home.

Deflating

Elliott had given Jamaica the lead with a 23rd-minute header, but Luiz Henriquez equalised for Panama at the 66th.

The draw was deflating, especially as the team was coming off a morale-boosting historic 0-0 tie with powerful Mexico at their treacherous high-altitude Azteca Stadium.

Now besides their shape, Montesso says they are also working to develop the players´ frame of mind.

"The plan was to get them focused back in the competition," he pointed out.

"We had a talk with the team because I believe we lost an opportunity to win the game in Jamaica. I think that we didn´t believe that we could kill the game after we scored the first goal."

He added: "It is good to get our minds back into the game, realise what we did and approach this game against Costa Rica because it will be another test to remain in the competition."

The result left Jamaica on two points, the same as Panama and Mexico, which also drew on Friday, 2-2 at Honduras. The Hondurans lead the six-team play-off series with four points, followed by the United States, which beat Costa Rica in a snowstorm in Colorado to go to three points. Costa Rica have one point.

"We believe that this phase of the campaign is really tight between all the teams and it will be decided by details and always it will be important to capitalise on these points," Montesso said, again reflecting on the Panama situation.

"This is not what we would want today, we would have wanted to win the game at home and go to four points. But at least we got a point and that is important."
