Canada eases past Trinidad in U-17 opener

LA CHORRERA, Panama - Canada commenced its 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship campaign Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago at the Estadio Agustin "Muquita´ Sanchez.

The triumph took the North American side atop the three-team Group B table with three points, while the young Soca Warriors must get a win or a draw in its match against Costa Rica on Monday to remain in contention for a quarterfinal place.

Canada dominated the action from the opening whistle, coming close to scoring an early goal on multiple occasions. Jordan Hamilton shot high in the 13th minute and Marco Bustos went wide five minutes later.

Trinidad started to creep back into the match, but in the 42nd minute, Marco Dominguez-Ramirez netted the game´s first goal, firing in from 18-yards out off a cleverly taken free kick by Bustos.

After the interval, Canada remained on the offensive and was rewarded with a second goal in the 59th minute.

Hamilton dribbled into the right side of the Trinidad box and attempted to chip goalkeeper Johan Welch. The shot was blocked, but the rebound went to Hamilton, who slotted home from close range.

Canada, which lost 3-0 after extra time to the United States in the competition´s 2011 final, will face Costa Rica in its last group match on Wednesday.

Nine-man Jamaica, Panama draw in U17s

http://www.youtube.com/w…_fvUfkMO0T8

LA CHORRERA, Panama - Miliciades Molina scored in second-half stoppage time to give host Panama a 1-1 draw with nine-man Jamaica on Saturday in the Group A opener for each at the 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship.

The late equalizer thrilled the capacity crowd at the Estadio Agustin "Muquita" Sanchez, but disappointed the young Reggae Boyz, who nearly held on for victory despite ending the encounter two players short.

In front of its home supporters, Panama attacked from the opening whistle.

Within 59 seconds, Luis Zuñiga attempted a bold bicycle kick that did not land far from its intended target.

In the 25th minute, a Zuñiga strike from 30-yards out fell to the feet of an unmarked Ismael Diaz inside the Jamaican box. The 15-year-old turned and shot. His effort from 12 yards, however, was well saved by goalkeeper Nicholas Nelson.

The Canaleros would regret that miss 15 minutes later, as Junior Flemmings netted from the penalty spot to give the visitors a 1-0 lead, after Micahel Seaton was taken down by Felix General.

Panama showed no signs of letdown, starting the second half robustly.

After breaking into the Jamaican box alone, Ismael Diaz would have equalized in the 54th minute if not for Nelson´s tremendous, outstretched stop.

Once again, the Jamaicans used a Panamanian near miss as motivation.

A shot from Khallil Stewart hit the post in the 57th and, just minutes afterwards, a Flemmings attempt rolled just wide of an open net as Panama goalkeeper Jaime De Gracia strayed out his box.

Rather than Panama being punished, Jamaica would go down a man in the 68th minute, when Ryan Miller was issued a red card.

As the half wore on, the Jamaicans started to fatigue, but still looked in control.

Then, one minute into injury time, Ervin Zorrilla - who two minutes earlier agonizingly misfired wide with only Nelson to beat - shot off the Jamaican goalkeeper´s finger tips. The ball crashed off the crossbar, allowing Molina to head home, much to the delight of the Panamanian faithful.

Tyshan Hill was ejected three minutes later, leaving Jamaica further shorthanded and unable to muster a possible winner.

In the next Group A match, Jamaica will meet Barbados on Tuesday.

U-17 Sudamericano: Ecuador and Colombia without goals

Ecuador played out a scoreless draw with Colombia on Saturday and now sits at the top Group A in the U-17 Sudamericano played in Argentina that give four places to the World Cup in the UAE later this year.

With this result Ecuador is in first place together with Paraguay (4 points) and followed by Venezuela (3), Colombia (2) and Argentina (0).

The game between the youth of Ecuador and Colombia was a slog-fest, the match ending with seven players booked.

The players who saw yellow were Colombians Jefferson Gómez, Brayan Rovia and forward Caicedo Sinisterra and Ecuadorians Edison Solís, Cevallos Caicedo, David Valencia and Rodriguez Monserrate.

Among the standouts from the Colombian team was Joao Rodríguez, the only member of the team who plays abroad (Chelsea, England). He produced several scoring chances but couldn´t get one past the Ecuadorian keeper.

Argentina beat Venezuela 3-0 on Saturday to keep its chances of qualifying after two consecutive losses in the U-17 Sudamericano played until April 28 for four tickets to the World Cup in the UAE.

With this win the host nation have 3 points the same as Venezuela, with Argentina ahead on goal difference. Paraguay and Ecuador lead the group on 4 points while Colombia is last with 2 points.

The goals came from Sebastián Driussi (4 and 63 minutes) and Matías Sánchez (16), author of the assist on the first goal.

Driussi, the number 9 jersey for both Argentina and River Plate´s youth team, was man of the match in which Argentina looked different and took revenge after defeats against Ecuador (0-2) and Paraguay (1-3).

Venezuela was clearly affected by Argentina´s early goals and couldn´t change the tide. With the defeat they lost the chance to become the sole leader of Group A.

Venezuelans Franko Díaz, Francisco La Mantia, Eduardo Maceira, Ronaldo Peña and Andrés Ponce saw yellow cards while Argentinian Driussi was carded.

The match was played at the Juan Gilberto Funes stadium in the city of La Punta in San Luis, some 800 km to the west of Buenos Aires.

Torneo Final 2013: Results go against Independiente; Vélez & San Lorenzo draw

Friday’s and Saturday’s Torneo Final matches brought just eight goals, but one clear loser; Independiente, one of only two sides in Argentina never to have been relegated, are closer than ever after losing 2-0 to All Boys on Friday night, and seeing results on Saturday go against them – mainly the fact that Atlético Rafaela got a 3-1 win away to Tigre. Elsewhere, Vélez Sarsfield and San Lorenzo drew 1-1, with San Lorenzo’s equaliser coming from a horrendous error from Vélez goalkeeper Sebastián Sosa. And there were 0-0 draws between Unión and Argentinos Juniors, Godoy Cruz and Belgrano, and Quilmes and San Martín.

All Boys 2 – 0 Independiente

All Boys took an early lead through a superb free kick from Brian Sarmiento, and Independiente offered very little thereafter. The visitors improved in the second half with the introduction of Ernesto Farías for the once again awful Juan Caicedo up front, but Ángel Vildozo put some deserved gloss on the scoreline with a fine finish at the end of a counter attack. This result, combined with Rafaela’s win and the fact that San Martín didn’t lose on Saturday, puts Independiente in all sorts of trouble now. They need a truly astonishing turnaround in form, and for at least two of the sides just above them in the relegation table to completely collapse, in order to stay up.

http://www.youtube.com/w…er_embedded

Tigre 1 – 3 Atlético Rafaela

Another early goal in Saturday’s first match, with Sebastián Carrera giving Rafaela the lead after just six minutes. Diego Cisterna equalised for Tigre five minutes into the second half, but two late goals from Jonathan López gave Rafaela the win. If Rafaela get nine points of the 33 they have left to play for, the points-averaging system means Independiente will need twenty-two in order to overtake Rafaela.

Unión 0 – 0 Argentinos Juniors

Unión failed to return to winning ways and Argentinos failed to make it two wins in a row, but both sides are slowly improving, and this result doesn’t change much for either of them; whatever had happened here, Unión are still doomed to relegation and Argentinos are pretty much safe for this season anyway.

Vélez Sarsfield 1 – 1 San Lorenzo de Almagro

After a first half in which San Lorenzo’s pressing had put the frighteners on a slightly heavy-legged Vélez side, following the hosts’ midweek Copa Libertadores commitments, Ezequiel Rescaldani stabbed in the opener for Vélez shortly after the restart. Everton cult hero and former Tigre forward Denis Stracqualursi smashed a penalty over the crossbar for San Lorenzo, before the visitors found an equaliser with eleven minutes to go when a Leandro Navarro free kick from near the halfway line bounced in the penalty area and looped over goalkeeper Sebastián Sosa, who had completely misjudged it.

http://www.youtube.com/w…er_embedded

Godoy Cruz 0 – 0 Belgrano

Godoy Cruz missed the chance to go level with Lanús atop the Torneo Final table – a win would have taken them level on points with the leaders, who play Boca Juniors in La Bombonera on Sunday evening. Belgrano had their chances to win, with Facundo Quiroga missing a penalty during the first half, and Martín Zapata hitting the crossbar in the second.

Quilmes 0 – 0 San Martín de San Juan

With neither Quilmes nor San Martín winning, this isn’t a result that either side will be entirely happy with, but with neither Quilmes nor San Martín losing, it’s another one that looks like a nail in Independiente’s coffin. San Martín remain below Independiente – that is, still in the relegation spots – and Quilmes just above them, safe for now. If Quilmes can take 14 points from the 33 they have left to play for, Independiente need 23 to overtake them.

Oscar: Chelsea pressure doesn´t compare to playing for Brazil

Chelsea midfielder Oscar has revealed that coping with the pressure from Brazil fans has helped him to settle in at Stamford Bridge.

The 21-year-old is continuing to impress during his first season with the European champions, even after only leaving Brazil for the first time last summer.

Oscar has taken everything in his stride and admits that playing for the Blues is easy compared to representing Brazil, where he carries the hopes of a nation ahead of next year’s World Cup.

He told the Daily Mirror: "I didn´t expect my first season here to be so dramatic. I hope next season can be more steady.

"But in Brazil it´s normal to have such dramatic ups and downs all the time. There, the fans put a lot more pressure on the players.

"When you win, you are adored. When you lose, you are hated, and managers change quite a lot.

"But playing here doesn´t really compare to the pressure of playing for Brazil because we´ve won the World Cup five times.

"It´s not only a massive country but football is part of the culture. They always want you to win, so you can never have an off-day.

"But I´m really pleased with how my season here has gone. This is the first time I´ve been in Europe and I think I am doing well in one of the best leagues in the world. But the season isn´t over and I´m hoping to win titles, too."

The young Seleção star, who currently has 15 senior caps, has drawn many comparisons to Real Madrid playmaker Kaká since the start of his career.

However, Oscar insists the similarities only go as far their playing style and not personal factors.

"Some people say I look like him too but I think I’m more beautiful," he joked.

"Religion is an important part of life and culture in Brazil, very important to us as Brazilians.

"The difference is that Kaká is an Evangelical and I’m a Catholic.

"It is a personal thing but it does help me to focus and find calmness, as a person and a player. Before every game I pray, I find solace. It helps me to relax and prepare."

Corinthians resume negotiations for Vasco defender Dedé - report

Corinthians have resume negotiations with Vasco for high rated defender Dedé, according to sports newspaper Lance!.

Directors Edu Gaspar and Duílio Monteiro Alves met Vasco´s executive director René Simões yesterday at Corinthians´ Joaquim Grava training ground.

Corinthians offered a number of players that could be involved in the deal, but Vasco are more interested in Emerson Sheik, who was not included in the list.

The current world champions will also pay part of the transfer fee, while the investors that own 45% of Dedé´s economic rights are also willing to pay a percentage of the fee to ensure that he moves to Corinthians.

Dedé has already expressed his intention of moving to either Corinthians or a top European club, and Vasco have already admitted they need to sell him due to the club´s poor financial situation.

Besides Corinthians, Dedé has also been linked to Premier League teams and to Milan, but no official offer has been made yet, according to Vasco´s president Roberto Dinamite.

Vasco sign Al-Gharafa striker Edmílson

Vasco have signed Al-Gharafa´s 30-year old striker Edmílson until the end of the 2013 season.

Edmílson has previously played for Palmeiras and several Japanese clubs, such as Urawa Red Diamonds.

He is not concerned about Vasco´s financial troubles, he said: "The big clubs are having those financial problems, but I´ll focus on the pitch as this is the reason why I returned to Brazil. We have to leave all of that off the pitch. I´ll work hard hoping the board do their job, do things right. I believe they will".

The striker also talked about Vasco´s recent lack of goals, he said: "Vasco reached the first turn final, lost due to small details, but unfortunately are not scoring goals in the second turn although everyone is trying hard to do so. The forwards Tenório and Éder Luís are trying hard. Sooner or later a goal will be scored again.
