U-17 Sudamericano: Uruguay gets a draw against Chile and remains leader of Group B

http://www.youtube.com/w…e1eYaXgfKiE

Uruguay drew 1-1 with Chile on Sunday and remains top of Group B of the U-17 Sudamericano which is being played in Argentina until April 28 and gives four spots to the World Cup to be held in the UAE.

Uruguay surprised Chile with a goal in the first minute of play scored by Gonzalo Latorre, while the Chileans got the equalizer through Vegas Orellana (44).

The Uruguayan team coached by Fabian Coito failed to take advantage of the initial goal and committed many faults to try to stop the Chilean advance. Uruguay played a man down after the expulsion of Maicol Cabrera in the 46th minute.

Chile didn´t lack the courage to try to score but lacked depth, although defender Orellana was outstanding on the day and scored a masterful header.

Apart from Cabrera being sent-off Uruguayans José Etcheverry, Pablo González and Gonzalo Latorre were shown yellow as was Dino Delgado for Chile.

On Tuesday in fourth round Group B action Chile will face off against Peru while Uruguay will have their bye returning to action against Bolivia on Thursday.

The top three teams from this group will pass on to the next round that begins on April 14 to face the top three teams from Group A which includes Argentina, Paraguay, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela.

The top four teams from the tournament will qualify for the World Cup to be held in the United Arab Emirates from October 17 to November 8.

U.S. starts U17s with win over Haiti

PANAMA CITY, Panama - Christopher Lema scored a goal in each half and the United States beat Haiti 3-0 on Sunday in their 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship debuts at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez.

The victory leaves the U.S. atop the Group C standings on three points, while Haiti needs a win or a draw against Guatemala on Tuesday to keep its hope of advancing to the quarterfinals alive.

"I´m happy because we got the result against a great opponent," said Richie Williams, the U.S. head coach. "There were nerves at the start."

Despite the apparent early unease, Ahinga Selemani nearly gave the Americans a lead before sixty seconds had elapsed, but Haiti goalkeeper Cleef Cadet was well positioned at his left post to make a stop.

After Jonel Desire found himself on the end of two valid scoring opportunities for Haiti, Jean Wisner Derival saw a 16th minute effort swept away before it reached the U.S. net.

In the 24th minute, Corey Baird was pulled down in the Haitian box and referee Christophel Stewart pointed to the spot. Two minutes later, Lema calmly stroked his penalty kick to the left of a diving Cadet to give the defending tournament champion a 1-0 lead.

Arcus Carlens nearly leveled for Haiti just prior to the interval, forcing an alert Elijah Martin to head off-the-line at the left post.

Lema netted his second goal in the 73rd minute, finding the back of the net with his left foot from 18-yards off a headed assist by Rubio Rubin, who guided a Baird cross in the direction of the New York Red Bulls youth product.

Selemani got his name on the score sheet four minutes from time. The 17-year-old shrugged off a Haitian defender on the left side near the end line, regained possession after the ball took an unusual spin and placed a shot a right-footed shot past Cadet.

The U.S. is idle until Thursday, when it faces Guatemala.

Mexico defeats Cuba 5-1 at U17s

http://www.youtube.com/w…QNocj4-EfZo

PANAMA CITY, Panama - Mexico defeated Cuba 5-1 in CONCACAF Under-17 Championship action on Sunday at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez. Luis Hernandez and Marco Granados scored two goals apiece in a winning effort.

The Tricolor combined excellent touch and technical ability with tremendous off-the-ball movement throughout the game, creating numerous scoring opportunities that the Cuban side did well to limit as best it could.

The impressive Alejandro Diaz gave Mexico a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute, powerfully heading home a cross from six-yards out.

Four minutes later, demonstrating power and pace, Diaz turned provider. The Club America product dribbled into the left side of the Cuban box and delivered a cross on the ground that Hernandez raced towards to slam past goalkeeper Silvio Bell.

The Caribbean Lions halved the deficit in the 29th minute, when Reinier Arencibia beat Mexican goalkeeper Raul Gudino with a brilliant free kick from 25-yards out.

Hernandez restored Mexico´s two-goal cushion in the 36th, slamming an effort into the back of the net off another assist from Diaz.

Substitute Marco Granados was the star of the second half, closing Mexico´s goal account with strikes in the 71st and 86th minutes.

Mexico -- the reigning world under-17 champion -- sits atop Group D with three points. The next group game takes place on Tuesday, as Honduras joins the fray with an encounter against the Cubans.

The Mexicans will face the Central American side on Thursday
