Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”

Lanus held in La Bombonera and River take advantage to close the gap

The league’s top three sides were in action yesterday and it was River Plate who profitted the most as leaders Lanus could only draw and Newell’s Old Boys were defeated by Colon meaning only 2 points seperates all three. Lanus made the short journey to Boca, an all too familiar trip for Lanus manager, Guillermo Schelotto who played under Carlos Bianchi in his famous Boca side some years ago. This reunion was the biggest talking point unfortunately as the two sides cancelled each other out resulting in a 0 – 0 draw. Earlier in the day, a second string, Newell’s side were defeated at home by Colon. With the midweek Libertadores game clearly in their plans, Colon were able to take full advantage and two goals from the league’s top scorer, Emmanuel Gigliotti gave them a 2-1 win. The day’s big winners were River Plate, who won 2 – 0 in Avellaneda against Racing. With both Lanus and Newell’s dropping points, River were able to close the gap to just 2 points.

RACING 0 – 2 RIVER PLATE

River got back to winning ways with a good performance against Racing. They took an early lead when Leandro Gonzalez Pirez thundered home a header from a corner and despite not getting the second until the closing minutes were good value for the three points. As Racing pushed to salvage something, Manuel Lanzini was able to capitalise on a loose pass and run clear on goal, skipping around the goalkeeper to finish and make certain of the win.

NEWELL’S OLD BOYS 1 – 2 COLON

Emmanuel Gigliotti scored twice in the second half to give Colon the win against a Newell’s reserve 11. Despite getting a consolation goal through Horacio Orzan, Newell’s failed to take advantage of Lanus dropping points.

BOCA JUNIORS 0 – 0 LANUS

Both sides had their share of chances but neither could find a way through. Boca are still searching for a win since the opening day of the season, with the Libertadores obviously taking priority. For Lanus, it is two draws in a row but they remain top of the table.

U-17 Sudamericano: Colombia-Venezuela without goals

Paraguay sits on 7 points followed by Venezuela and Ecuador (4) and Argentina and Colombia (3).

In the next round of games, the last of the group stage, Venezuela will go up against Paraguay and Colombia faces Argentina. Ecuador has completed its first stage commitments and their qualification is tied to the results of the other games.

Colombia was closer to scoring and generated at least a dozen situations although they couldn´t finish and failed to capitalize on the advantage that was given them by Venezuela when defender Franko Díaz was expelled from the game at the 51 minute mark.

Being shown yellow cards were Jeison Angulo Trujillo and Juan Mosquera for Colombia and Andrés Ponce and Beycker Velázquez for Venezuela.

The match was played at the Juan Gilberto Funes stadium in the city of La Punta, in San Luis which will be the site for the next stage to be played April 14 to 28.

In Group B, Uruguay is leader with 5 points followed by Brazil (4), Peru (3) and Chile (2). There are two rounds of games left in the group to complete the first phase. All games from this group are being played in the city of Mendoza.

The three top teams from each group face off to see which four will be playing in the World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. The tournament will be played this year from October 17 to November 8.

U-17 Sudamericano: with strength and forcefulness Paraguay advances to the next stage

https://www.youtube.com/…Vj5GjUWVSeA

Paraguay thrashed Ecuador 3-0 on Monday and ensured their qualification to the next round of the U-17 Sudamericano played in Argentina for four places to the World Cup to be held in the UAE later this year.

With this win and with one remaining game to be played in Group A, Paraguay has tallied 7 points followed by Ecuador (4), Argentina and Venezuela (3) and Colombia (2).

Paraguay still has to play Venezuela this coming Wednesday. Venezuela played this Monday against Colombia at the Juan Gilberto Funes stadium in the city of La Punta, in San Luis, 800 kilometers to the west of Buenos Aires.

On the other hand Ecuador concluded their first round commitments and their qualification now depends on the results of other matches, as Argentina (with a free date Monday), Venezuela and Colombia can overtake them in the standings.

The goals were scored by Jesús Medina Maldonado (50 and 83 minute) and Antonio Sanabria (53) from a free-kick.

The grand figure of the Ecuadorian team was goalkeeper Xavier Cevallos who saved at least half a dozen shots on goal.

Ecuador managed to produce some scoring chances but poor shooting by their strikers was to blame for the goose egg on the scoreboard.

In the first stage of this tournament Ecuador has a win, a draw and two defeats.

In the last round for Group A, on Wednesday, Paraguay will face Venezuela and Argentina will play against Colombia.

Libertadores: preparing for a week of qualifications to the round of 16

Seven teams will seek this week to qualify for the knockout stages of the 2013 Copa Libertadores in the framework of the eleven matches to be played between Tuesday and Thursday.

Libertad, Emelec, Peñarol, Santa Fe, Universidad de Chile, Newell´s and Fluminense are the seven clubs that are looking to punch their ticket to the round of 16. Five of the seven teams could qualify if everything falls into place.

Those that are in the best position are Paraguay´s Libertad in Group 2, Santa Fe of Colombia en Group 6, and Brazilian club Fluminense en Group 8. The premise is simple, win and they are in.

However Libertad has to win in Sao Paulo when they visit Palmeiras on Thursday. The Paraguayans have 8 points followed by the Brazilians with 6.

Rounding out the group is Sporting Cristal (5) and Argentina´s Tigre (3) who play on Tuesday in Buenos Aires in order to win and stay alive.

Santa Fe for their part has a tough job as visitors in Ibagué on Tuesday to face Deportes Tolima in Group 6 play.

Santa Fe is on 8 points while Tolima is one point behind, the same as Real Garcilaso. Cerro Porteño (0 points) is already eliminated. The Peruvians need to win on Wednesday in Cuzco against the Paraguayans to have any chance of moving on.

Fluminense has a shot at qualifying in Group 8 but has to travel to Porto Alegre to face Gremio. ´Flu´ has 7 points which is one more than Gremio. Huachipato (Chile) lead the group with 7 points.

Besides the three candidates there will be a second team to qualify out of Group 4: Peñarol and Emelec will decide who accompanies Vélez Sarsfield to the next stage.

Peñarol, 5-time Copa Lib champion, has the hardest road. They have to beat on Tuesday the already eliminated Deportes Iquique (Chile) in Montevideo, hope that Vélez defeats Emelec and then see how the goal difference shakes out.

For the moment the "Electrics" from Ecuador have 9 points and a +1 goal difference while Peñarol has 6 points and is -3 in goals.

Finally Newell´s Old Boys of Argentina can qualify from Group 7 if they get at least a draw on Thursday on their visit to the already qualified Olimpia of Paraguay.

Universidad de Chile will hope that this doesn´t happen and will try to score as many goals as they can against Venezuela´s Deportiva Lara in Barquisimeto. Olimpia has 10 points followed by Newell´s with 9, Universidad de Chile with 6 and Lara with 4.

In Group 5, Corinthians of Brazil -the defending champion of the Copa Lib and the Club World Cup- and Mexico´s Tijuana, both of whom have already qualified for the next stage, will meet each other on Wednesday to see who gets to claim first place of the group.

They close out their participation in the second stage with the respective matchups at home against San José from Bolivia and Colombia´s Millonarios.
