With a tie, Emelec gets ticket punched for next round of competition

Emelec managed to classify for the next round of Copa Libertadores 2013 competition when they tied 0-0 while visiting Vélez Sarsfield. The Argentinian squad will also pass to the next round.

With the result, Vélez and Emelec classify for the next round, with Vélez as leader and Emelec as runner up in Group 4 competition. The Argentinians finished at the top of the leader board with 13 points, followed by the ´electric´ team - Emelec - with 10. Uruguayan squad Peñarol ended up with 9 and Chileans Deportes Iquique with 3 but they will not be able to advance.

In an intense game, Vélez, who already had established its position in the next round, still played to win. Emelec, who only needed one point to qualify, played hard and with the tie got themselves a much-sought-after classification berth for the next round of Copa competition.

Sebastián Gallegos (38), Marcelo Zalayeta (74) and Matías Aguirregaray (76) scored goals for the victorious team in gold and white jerseys, but that was not enough for them to classify for the next round of Libertadores competition. The teams from their group that will pass - Vélez Sarsfield of Argentina and Emelec of Ecuador - played to a 0-0 tie in Buenos Aires.

Vélez, who leads the group with 13 points and Emelec, with ten points, qualified. Peñarol, with 9 points and Iquique, with 3 points, round out the group.

The will to win was evident on the part of both teams from the very start of the game. The teams made no effort to hide their goals: Peñarol launched a powerful attack hoping that with a Vélez victory in Argentina they would be able to classify while Iquique was just hoping to avoid humilliation.

Gallegos put the first points on the board on the way to victory with a goal on a free kick in the first half.

The goal had a calming effect on the team directed by Jorge ´Polilla´ Da Silva, who watched the game from the stands due to a suspension. His team didn´t need his presence on the bench: the goals scored at 74 and 76 minutes by Zalayeta and Aguirregaray put the game out of reach for the opposition, 3-0.

Brasil avanzó este martes a la ronda final al vencer 3-1 a Bolivia, a flote aún en la competencia, mientras Chile igualó 1-1 con Perú y acabó con su sueño de lograr una de las cuatro plazas en juego para el Mundial de Emiratos Árabes Unidos.

Con estos resultados Brasil lidera las posiciones del Grupo B con 7 puntos, seguido por Uruguay (5), Perú (4), Chile (3) y Bolivia (1).

Pese a estar en el último puesto Bolivia aún tiene esperanzas de meterse en el hexagonal final y para ello deberá derrotar a Uruguay el jueves en el cierre de la fase de grupos, y esperar que Brasil haga lo mismo con Perú.

De su lado Chile ya no puede seguir sumando porque completó los cuatro partidos de la primera ronda.

Ambos partidos de este martes se jugaron en el estadio Malvinas Argentinas de la ciudad de Mendoza, 1.100 kilómetros al oeste de Buenos Aires.

Clasificarán al hexagonal los tres mejores posicionados del grupo que se enfrentarán a sus pares del Grupo A, integrado por Paraguay (7 puntos), Venezuela (4), Ecuador (4), Colombia (3) y Argentina (3).

En la cuarta y última fecha del Grupo A, el miércoles, Paraguay se medirá con Venezuela y Argentina con Colombia, en tanto Ecuador ya completó todos sus compromisos.

Los partidos se jugarán en el estadio Juan Gilberto Funes de la ciudad de La Punta, San Luis, 800 km al oeste de Buenos Aires, que del 14 al 28 de abril será escenario del hexagonal final.

TORREON, Mexico -- Santos is off to its second straight CONCACAF Champions League Final after hanging on for a 1-1 draw with the Seattle Sounders on Tuesday in the second leg of their semifinal series to advance 2-1 on aggregate.

Having won 1-0 on the road last Tuesday at CenturyLink Field, Santos took the lead in the second leg through a brilliant first-half free kick from Carlos Darwin Quintero.

Lamar Neagle gave the Sounders some life with his first goal of the competition, when he scored with 18 minutes remaining. The quest for the all-important second goal, however, proved fruitless.

Quintero´s goal came on a free kick in the 21st minute after Herculez Gomez drew a foul just outside the Seattle penalty area. The Colombian smashed the ball off the crossbar and over the line. It bounced back in to the field of play to Herculez Gomez, who hit the back of the net, but the call had already made.

It was Quintero´s 16th career CCL goal, which puts him second on the tournament´s all-time scoring list. Cruz Azul´s Javier Orozco leads the way with 25 goals.

Seattle created some opportunities in the first half, but Steve Zakuani and Eddie Johnson each missed.

Needing the two goals that would advance them to the finals, the Sounders pressed for much of the second half and were eventually rewarded in the 72nd minute.

Neagle had come on for Johnson just 12 minutes earlier and scored after leading a rush up the right side. He crossed to Zakuani, whose initial shot was stopped by Santos goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez, but Neagle smartly followed the play and had an open net to bang in the rebound.

Santos had the ball in Seattle´s net another time in the 79th minute through Oribe Peralta, only to be ruled offside.

Seattle had a handful of chances to get the second goal. One opportunity came in the 81st minute, when Djimi Traori jumped up to get to a cross from the left. In the end, the former Liverpool star could only get his shoulder on it, allowing an easy stop for Sanchez.

PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Honduras overcame a one-goal deficit to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2013 CONCACAF Championship behind a 4-1 Group D win over Cuba on Tuesday night.

Devron Garcia secured a brace in the first half for the Central Americans, who added insurance goals by Brayan Velasquez and Rembrandt Flores in the second half at Estadio Rommel Fernandez.

The Cubans (0-2-0, no points), who dropped a 5-1 decision to Mexico on Sunday, were eliminated from the competition. Honduras (1-0-0, three) will meet Mexico (1-0-0, three) for the group title on Thursday.

The Hondurans enjoyed the early run of play, taking two shots in the opening four minutes -- a 35-yard blast from Luis Santos that sailed wide left in the third minute and a header from inside the penalty area that was saved by goalkeeper Silvio Bell a minute later.

But the Cubans settled down and to assert themselves. It paid off in the 17th minute. A ball was lofted into the area and Reinier Arencibia headed it out to Yorjandy Somonte, who snapped an 18-yard bullet to the lower right corner for a 1-0 advantage.

Ten minutes later, Honduras equalized. Bell produced a nice kick save of a close-range shot, but the ball went straight to Garcia, who converted the rebound past a sprawled Bell to tie things up at 1-1.

Bell was tested several more times in the opening half. In the 31st minute. Velasquez fired an eight-yard shot that the Cuban keeper managed to knock out of harm´s way.

Bell wasn´t as fortunate three minutes later as he left another rebound that changed the course of the game. Kevin Alvarez sent the ball into the box to Alberth Elis, who turned and launched a 10-yard shot that Bell blocked with both hands. Again, the rebound came to Garcia, who put it home for a 2-1 lead.

Los Catrachos came close to extending their lead in the 37th minute as Kevin Alvarez looped in a long free kick that hit the crossbar.

Cuba came close to tying things up in the 45th minute as Arencibia put a close-range shot off his right thigh to goalkeeper Cristian Hernandez.

With the second half barely three minutes old, Velasquez gave the Central American side some breathing room. Elis, who had the ball in traffic in the middle of the box, sent a short pass to his right to Velasquez, who powered a shot to the lower right corner for a 3-1 lead.

Velasquez almost collected his second goal of the half in the 71st minute as he slammed an 18-yard blast off the crossbar. He injured his left leg on the play and was replaced by Darwin Arita in the 75th minute.

Flores completed the scoring in the 87th minute, when he beat Bell from a difficult angle on the left side.

Guatemala Wins 3-1 over Haiti U17

PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Christopher Ortiz struck for a pair of first-half goals and set up an insurance tally in the second half to boost Guatemala to a 3-1 Group C win over Haiti and into the quarterfinals of the 2013 CONCACAF Championship on Tuesday night.

The loss eliminated the Haitians (0-2-0, no points) from the competition, while the Guatemalans (1-0-0, three) will battle the United States (1-0-0, three) for the group title on Thursday night. The U.S. defeated Haiti on Sunday, 3-0.

Haiti struck first on a brilliant individual effort by Jean Derival in the 12th minute at Estadio Rommel Fernandez. Derival found himself with the ball at midfield and motored down the right side, beating two defenders before firing a 12-yard bullet into the upper near post past goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen.

The Guatemalans equalized on a Ortiz´s first goal in the 24th minute. Diego Meda penetrated into the right side of the penalty area before he sent a cross that was deflected off Haitian defender Carlens Arcus to Ortiz, who flicked it home at the left post past keeper Cleef Cadet for a 1-1 tie.

Ortiz scored a spectacular goal of his own in the 28th minute as he volleyed home a 40-yard pass from Kenndell Curup. Ortiz beat Arcus and chipped a 10-yard shot past Cadet for a 2-1 advantage.

Haitian coach Raphael Novaes was forced to use two substitutions before halftime as he replaced Alessandro Campoy with Therson Philippe in the 38th minute and an injured Derival with Derrick Etienne two minutes later.

The Guatemalans came out in the second half on the attack, playing as though they needed to the equalizer. Three minutes in, Luis Samayoa came close, firing a blazing low shot just wide right of the net.

The Haitians finally found their attack, although they had trouble penetrating into the area. So, they tried to equalize from distance. Jonel Desire tried a 20-yard attempt that Hagen easily caught in the 72nd minute. Only a minute later, Philippe ripped a 28-yard shot that barely went wide right of the net.

Ortiz turned playmaker in the 78th minute. With room on the left side, he crossed the ball to Mario Hernandez, who slotted the ball in from seven yards for a 3-1 lead.

El Papa recibió a Lammens

BUENOS AIRES -- El Papa Francisco I saludó este miércoles en el Vaticano al presidente de San Lorenzo Matías Lammens y al grupo que lo acompañó hasta Italia.

Lammens, el tesorero Leonardo Lipera y el vocal Miguel Mastrosimone presenciaron la audiencia general que brindó Francisco en la Plaza San Pedro, y luego mantuvieron un breve contacto, en el que aprovecharon para entregarle algunos presentes.

Marcelo Tinelli, vicepresidente del club, finalmente no fue parte de la delegación del club, aunque siguió de cerca el evento y minutos después publicó una foto en la red social Twitter.

"Momento único e irrepetible. Nuestro presidente Matias Lammens y el tesorero Lipera junto al Papa en el Vaticano", escribió Tinelli para acompañar la imagen en la que se ve a Francisco recibiendo presentes de Lammens y Lipera.

Entre otras palabras que el Sumo Pontífice les dedicó este miércoles a los fieles, se destacó un saludo especial a los hinchas del"Ciclón: "Saludo al grupo del Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro, de Buenos Aires".

El martes, San Lorenzo difundió la carta que Francisco le respondió a Lammens, en la que, entre otras cosas, mencionaba gratos recuerdos de su infancia, en la que siguió de cerca la campaña del equipo campeón de 1946.

Facundo Ferreyra, cerca del regreso

BUENOS AIRES -- Facundo Ferreyra, sin rastros de la sucesión de lesiones que lo afectaron en el último tiempo y que podría retornar al equipo titular de Vélez Sarsfield el próximo domingo ante Colón, en Santa Fe, sostuvo que el objetivo es "levantar en el torneo local y sumar para clasificar a la próxima Copa Libertadores".

"Tenemos que sumar la mayor cantidad de puntos pensando en la próxima Libertadores", señaló el delantero del conjunto que visitará el domingo 16.10 al ´sabalero ´en la capital santafesina.

"Colón es un equipo complicado. Vienen de ganar dos partidos seguidos, vienen en racha" analizó ´Chuky´ sobre el rival ante el que Vélez intentará repuntar en el certamen local, dado que lleva solo 9 unidades en el torneo local.

"Ya estoy entrenando a la par de mis compañeros, ojalá pueda estar y si no es el domingo, que sea el miércoles contra Olimpo (por la Copa Argentina)" dijo Ferreyra, quien se recuperó de una distensión en el muslo derecho que sufriera el 12 de marzo ante Peñarol en el Amalfitani.

"Varias fechas me perdí este año, mala suerte, entonces ahora lo mejor será pensar en lo que se viene, que son cosas importantes", analizó respecto de la distensión que sufrió y un esguince de tobillo que también lo marginó de las canchas.

"Pasaron muchos días, nunca estuve tanto tiempo lesionado" se lamentó el delantero, quien añadió que "esta parte es la más linda y no me la pierdo. Por suerte el equipo pudo clasificar y lo hizo muy bien", dijo con la mira puesta en los octavos de final de la Copa Libertadores.

"Los resultados en el torneo no son los mismos que en la Copa (Libertadores). Hubo partidos que merecimos más pero no se nos dio: ahora hay que tratar de sumar la mayor cantidad de puntos y terminar lo más arriba posible", enfatizó.

La semana próxima Vélez iniciará su participación en la Copa Argentina ante Olimpo de Bahía Blanca, el miércoles 17 a las 22.00 en Catamarca, y en Liniers seduce pensar en ganar el cupo que otorga para el torneo continental.

"La Copa Argentina es un torneo que hay que tener en cuenta porque te da una plaza para la Libertadores. Son cinco partidos los que hay que jugar. Hay que tomarla con la mayor seriedad".

El ex Banfield entrenó hoy a la par de sus compañeros sin tener muestras de molestias por la lesión de la cual se recuperó, y lo hizo junto con el grupo que no jugó frente a Emelec anoche, en el cierre del grupo 4 de la Copa Libertadores.

El plantel que conduce el entrenador Ricardo Gareca realizó hoy trabajos con pelota y luego fútbol en espacios reducidos, mientras quienes jugaron anoche ante los ecuatorianos hicieron ejercicios regenerativos.

JM Martínez: "Debo dar mucho más"

BUENOS AIRES -- El delantero Juan Manuel Martínez aseguró que él y sus compañeros están en condiciones de dar "mucho más" para que el equipo mejore.

"Puedo dar mucho más, es una realidad. Tanto yo como todos los demás. Uno o dos jugadores no pueden hacer nada porque esto es un juego de equipo, de once jugadores y todos dependemos del compañero. Yo siempre digo que cuando uno levanta el nivel individual, levanta el nivel grupal", sostuvo el Burrito Martínez por radio La Red.

Según Martínez, "si acá mejoran dos o tres jugadores y los demás andan bien, vamos a ganar. Pero tiene que haber por lo menos siete u ocho jugadores que te terminen los partidos. Yo el fútbol lo veo de esa manera".

Rechazó que su paso por el fútbol de Brasil le haya mermado su nivel de juego. "No me perjudicó nada porque estuve solamente dieciséis partidos de los cuales en tres fui titular y en los demás suplente".

Quitó relevancia a que haya estado en el banco ante Lanús, puntero del torneo Final, al sostener que la respuesta a su condición de suplente la debe dar el entrenador, aunque apuntó que "hay que saber rotar y ver los jugadores que llegan de la mejor manera".

Borrelli: "Gallego no pensó renunciar"

BUENOS AIRES -- Enrique Ezequiel Borrelli, ayudante de campo de Américo Gallego, aseguró este miércoles que el técnico de Independiente "nunca quiso renunciar después de perder con All Boys, como se dijo por ahí".

"Gallego nunca quiso renunciar después del partido con All Boys. Sí estaba golpeado, porque siente el peso de no poder devolverle a la gente con resultados todo el cariño que recibe, pero si se va es una decisión personal que tomará cuando vea que le está haciendo daño a Independiente", destacó Borrelli en Deportivo Télam.

"Lo que pasa es que el `Tolo` ama mucho a Independiente y si ve que le está haciendo mal, no va a querer lastimar a nadie. Pero lo que yo tengo claro es que si se queda, yo lo acompañaré, y si se va, me iré con él", avisó.

En el mismo sentido el ex jugador de Chacarita Juniors apuntó que Gallego "está fuerte de ánimo y tiene mucho carácter, pero la realidad es que en estos meses que estamos en el club, a la gente solamente le dimos una alegría: ganarle el clásico a Racing".

"Por eso los jugadores están sometidos al nerviosismo general, ya que ven que los partidos pasan, no podemos sumar de a tres puntos y ya no nos queda tiempo", reconoció.

La polémica salida del delantero Ernesto Farías de cara al partido con Unión, fue un tema abordado por Borrelli sin histerias, ya que más allá de señalar que la "decisión es resorte exclusivo de Gallego", afirmó que el "Tecla" es "un jugador más del plantel y puede volver a jugar en cualquier momento".

"Lo que sí puedo decir es que a pesar de los malos resultados, nunca tuvimos problemas con los jugadores. Por eso coincido con (Claudio) Morel Rodríguez cuando dice que está enojado porque algún ex futbolista dijo que se había hecho expulsar con All Boys para no estar con Unión. Se ve que no lo conocen", remarcó.

"Y si bien es cierto que el partido con Unión del próximo viernes es una final, porque es un rival directo, también sabemos que desde que llegó Facundo Sava a la dirección técnica ellos crecieron mucho y juegan bien. Por eso, si salimos a jugar el partido `palo y palo` podemos pasarlo mal. Habrá que tomar recaudos", anticipó.

Sobre este juego Borrelli manifestó confiar "en el árbitro (Juan Pablo Pompei), que seguramente será justo al tomar decisiones", y advirtió sobre "la necesidad de refundar el equipo a partir de la obtención de los tres puntos".

"Hoy empezamos una concentración larga en Ezeiza para estar más juntos todos, pero no nos fuimos de Villa Domínico porque pensábamos que podía visitarnos la barra, sino porque el predio quedó muy afectado por la inundación de la semana pasada", explicó.

"Lo concreto es que nuestros rivales a superar son Quilmes y Atlético Rafaela, pero a esta situación no llegamos por culpa de una sola persona, sino de seis campeonatos malísimos", concluyó.
