Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”

U-17 group stage offered drama and more

PANAMA CITY, Panama - A thrilling group stage is over and done at the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship in Panama, and the knockout action gets underway on Saturday with two key clashes that will determine the region´s first two tickets to the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

One of the first to look for its ticket to the world stage will be host Panama, which takes on Trinidad & Tobago in Saturday´s nightcap at Estadio Agustin "Muquita" Sanchez in La Chorrera, where the Canaleros won a hotly contested Group A.

The host had a bit more trouble than hoped navigating the group stage, as Jorge Dely Valdes´ charges had to come up with a tense victory over a surprise Barbados side that fell just short of advancing to the quarters. A standout performance from forward Ervin Zorilla, though, led the Red Tide to the 2-0 win over the Caribbean side in the final group match, and put Panama through.

Panama´s slight struggles were due also to a strong group performance from Jamaica, whose pair of draws led to a second round date with Canada, the leader of Group B, in a match that will kick off action on Saturday at 5 PM local time.

"The staff and the players have done everything they can to prepare for tomorrow and we are simply asking the team to focus on putting in a good performance," said Canada head coach, Sean Fleming. "Credit has to go the boys for how they have performed so far in Panama in some difficult conditions and we know we will have to be at our best to beat Jamaica tomorrow."

The Canadians looked excellent in group action, overcoming Trinidad on the opening day, before playing Costa Rica to a 1-1 tie. They will, however, be without Marco Dominguez-Ramirez against Jamaica, after the standout midfielder accumulated two yellow cards in group play.

The other side of the draw produced clearer group winners, as both defending tournament champion United States and defending World Cup champion Mexico managed two wins from two outings in Group C and Group D, respectively.

Mexico racked up an impressive seven goals for and just one against, while motoring to wins over Honduras and Cuba. The Catrachos also advanced to the quarterfinal stage by virtue of their 4-1 triumph over the Caribbean side, behind a brace from central playmaker Devron Garcia.

Honduras will face the U.S. on Sunday, after a strong defensive showing led the Americans through to the quarters. Led by goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell, the U.S. was the only team not to give up a goal in the group stage.

Guatemala seized the final spot in the quarterfinals with a win over Haiti, on the strength of two goals from Christopher Ortiz. The Chapines will be in search of their first-ever under-17 World Cup appearance, when they meet Mexico in Sunday´s late game, which will round out the region´s field for the 2013 World Cup.

Paper review – Veron, Maradona, Pope Francis plus injury and crime updates

Veron could be making a comeback

With last night being the first time in some time that there wasn’t a game to write up I’ll take the opportunity to bring a quick review of the stories making the news today. One thing that can be said about Argentine football is even when there is no action on the pitch there is still plenty to discuss. Juan Sebastian Veron could be following in Riquelme’s path and making a shock return to action as Diego Maradona heads to Venezuela to assist one of the presidential candidates in the election. The Pope has welcomed a contingent from San Lorenzo in Rome (not that San Lorenzo mention the Pope much….), David Trezeguet faces months on the sidelines so we look at some of the other injuries, Independiente players are threatened as they arrive for training and there is a mysterious death at Velez’s stadium.

THE RETURN OF VERON?

Following the woeful start to the season by Estudiantes is has emerged that legend, Juan Sebastian Veron is back training with the squad with the possibility that he could make a return to action. His retirement in 2012, due in part, because of a ankle injury meant that this looked unlikely but now Veron is seeking advice on the ankle and has admitted that he would love to play again. Having seen Riquelme return for Boca, Veron may feel that he has something to offer Estudiantes. Frankly, they can’t get any worse this season so even a half fit Veron may be a blessing. For now, he remains in his role as Sports Director but we will wait to see if this changes.

VOTE FOR DIEGO?

Well not quite, but Diego Maradona will be arriving in Venezuela to help Presidential hopeful Nicolas Maduro. Maradona was a close friend of former President Hugo Chavez and so has been persuaded to appear and encourage voters to support Maduro. Not sure affiliation with Diego is the way forward politically but you never know. Perhaps Ed Miliband should take note and enlist the help of Gazza.

POPE FRANCIS MEETS WITH SAN LORENZO BOARD

Sadly this is not with a view to a big money transfer but merely a well publicised meeting where club President, Matias Lammens and other board members have travelled to Rome to meet the Pope. Pope Francis was quoted as saying, “I cordially greet the group from Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro, Buenos Aires, that’s very important, ” There are also rumours that San Lorenzo’s planned new stadium, once they move back to their spiritual home of Boedo, could be named after Francisco.

ARGENTINA THE THIRD BEST TEAM IN THE WORLD

That is according to the latest FIFA rankings. Following last month’s win over Venezuela and a draw with Bolivia, Argentina remained in third, behind Spain and Germany. Even better, for Argentina, Brazil have dropped down to 19th.

TREZEGUET OUT FOR SEASON

River Plate’s World Cup winning forward, David Trezeguet will not play for possibly 5 months as he is need of knee surgury. A bitter blow for a 35 year old who has spoken of his desire to win something with River and play in the Libertadores. Ramon Diaz will also be disappointed as Trezeguet had looked sharper this season and he is already missing key members from the squad. Ramiro Funes Mori, Martin Aguirre, Germán Pezzella and Johnatan Maidana are all out of action at present.

MORE INJURIES

Juan Roman Riquelme has not travelled with Boca to San Juan as it looks like Bianchi is holding him back for the Libertadores clash with Toluca. The league is already out of reach so the focus is on the Libertadores. Despite already qualifying from their group, Boca will be keen to get as many points as possible to get a good seeding and avoid any of the big boys in the next round.

MIGLIORE IN A BAD CONDITION

13 days since Pablo Migliore was sent to prison in Ezeiza and his lawyer has claimed that the San Lorenzo goalkeeper is in a terrible condition. Still furious at this injustice, Migliore and his lawyer believe he should be free.

INDEPENDIENTE FANS START TO TURN

Yesterday, as striker Luciano Leguizamon arrived to training he stopped to sign some autographs he was verbally abused and threatened by some “fans”, unhappy at the side’s current plight. Amongst some other pretty unsavoury things, the message was clear “Go down to the B…and we kill you all” This weekend’s game with Union is huge

BODY FOUND AT VELEZ

After their midweek game in the Libertadores a body was found under the stand. The deceased is a Velez fan and tests appear to show that he died of a heart attack and so any foul play has been dismissed. However, the brother of the 36 year old deceased has stated that he was a member of one of the Barra’s, at a time when internal fighting is increasing. The brother’s version has been denied so it’s all unknown at the moment as they wait to hear the news from some more tests.

ALMEYDA’S DEBUT

Matias Almeyda made his debut as manager of Banfield last night. Sadly it wasn’t a glorious start, instead a dull 0 -0. They remain some way of the pace so any promotion will be on hold until next year.

Vasco turn down Cruzeiro first offer for Dedé

Cruzeiro made their first offer for Dedé, but Vasco deemed the offer too low, but the negotiations continue.

A group of investors is helping Cruzeiro and the club´s director Alexandre Mattos is still in Rio de Janeiro.

Vasco demand 5 million Euros for 45% of Dedé´s economic rights, but Cruzeiro offered only 4 million Euros and two players - Anselmo Ramón and Mauricio Victorino.

Dedé´s salary will need to be more than doubled if he joins Cruzeiro, he currently earns 50,000 Euros a month, but intends to increase his salary to around 115,000 Euros a month.

Cruzeiro´s communication director Guilherme Mendes admits that there are other targets, he told press: "Cruzeiro work with other options but I won´t name them or their positions. We´ll only express our position when there is something concrete."

Palmeiras´ centreback Henrique is deemed an option if Dedé is not signed, but his team are still playing Copa Libertadores, which could complicate eventual negotiations.

Rio de Janeiro governor defends privatization of Maracanã

Rio de Janeiro´s governor Sérgio Cabral has defended the hotly contested privatization of the Maracanã stadium.

The issue is a matter of dispute between the government and the Public Ministry, and protests have also took place.

Sérgio Cabral explained his opinion: "The government of the State of Rio de Janeiro have must run a thousand schools, 50 public hospitals, 45,000 military police officers, 70,000 teachers. Why will it run Maracanã? That´s a misguided view".

He added: "we love to talk about European football, then let´s do like European football. We love to talk about the NBA, then let´s follow the logic of civilized countries where the stadiums are not run by the government".

The governor completed: "and it makes no sense that if I defend that airports are privately run, as we know what happens with [Brazilian government corporation] Infraero, so imagine what happens with a stadium?"

Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista and Odebrecht are the two contenders vying to operate the Maracanã.

Freddy Adu eager to impress Bahia fans

American player Freddy Adu was officially presented at his new team Bahia on Friday, he is eager to impress the club fans.

Freddy Adu is impressed with his new club, he said in the press conference: "I´m very happy, as I felt the fans passion. I´m physically ready to play. The Arena Fonte Nova is beautiful, wonderful and incredible, I´m eager to play there."

He also talked about Bahia´s new manager Joel Santana: "Joel [Santana] has a good command of English, communication will be easy."

Joel Santana was the manager of South Africa before the last World Cup, he was criticized for his poor English language skills.

Freddy Adu talked about his experience abroad: "I regret moving to Europe too young. I never imagined that it would be a bad thing to play for many different teams. Benfica loaned me out so that I could gain experience. I am 23 now and I hope to fix the mistakes of the past".

Bahia fans are calling him ´Adivis´ as Adu sounds too similar to swear words that are common in Brazil.
