Panama to meet Mexico in U-17 final

http://www.youtube.com/w…jQq7PWNYrDM

PANAMA CITY - Ervin Zorrilla scored the winning goal 10 minutes from full time to lift Panama to a 2-1 win over Canada in the second semifinal of the CONCACAF U-17 Championship at Estadio Rommel Fernandez Wednesday night.

Panama will play Mexico in the final, while Canada meets Honduras in the third place match Friday. El Tri defeated Honduras, 3-1, in the other semifinal Wednesday. All four teams have qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in October.

Panama, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup before losing to eventual champion Mexico, had to rally from an early 1-0 deficit to beat the Canadians.

Zorrilla received a diagonal pass from Vidal Gonzalez, took a touch and stutter step before blasting a low shot inside the far post from the edge of the 18-yard box for his team-leading third goal of the tournament.

With FIFA president Sepp Blatter watching from the stands, Canada raced in front 1-0 five minutes into the match as Matthew Chow played a perfect cross to the back post where Marco Bustos beat Panama goalkeeper Jaime De Gracia with a diving header.

It looked like history was possibly repeating itself as Canada defeated Panama in the 2011 semifinals on an eighth minute goal by Luca Gasparotto.

Ismael Diaz, though, leveled in the 37th minute with a first-time volley from 12 meters for his third goal of the competition. Jomar Diaz played the ball to Yahir Marroquin, who sent a cross into the box where Diaz leapt and struck for Panama´s first-ever goal against Canada in the U-17 tournament.

Canada, which defeated Jamaica, 4-2 in the quarterfinals, nearly broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute following a defensive miscue by Panama. But under harassment from Panama captain Jesus Araya, Hanson Boakai put his attempt wide of the target from eight meters.

Three minutes later, Marco Dominguez-Ramirez chipped a sublime ball into the box to Andrew Gordon, but he just mishit his header and put it well over the bar.

Panama, which defeated Trinidad and Tobago, 4-2, in the quarterfinals, thought it scored the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute, but Luis Zuniga was ruled offside when he put the ball in at the back post.

There was no stopping Zorrilla six minutes later, although the celebration was almost put on hold two minutes from full time when Canada beat Panama´s offside trap. However, De Gracia slid out and kicked the ball away, eliminating the danger and securing Panama´s passage into the final.

Mexico vs. Peru: Final score 0-0, Domestic-based El Tri fail to impress

Chepo de la Torre´s domestic squad didn´t do much to inspire optimism on Wednesday night in San Francisco.

It would be unfair to cast judgement on Mexico or Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre after a domestic-based friendly no matter the result, but with the struggles El Tri have had in the Hex, their listless performance in a 0-0 draw with Peru on Wednesday night is going to raise some eyebrows. The team was devoid of ideas in the final third and generally unimpressive as they added yet another draw to their string of them in 2013.

Pablo Barrera provided Mexico with one bright spot as he showed some of the same dynamism that made him such a force for El Tri before he tore his ACL. The winger, like most of his teammates, struggled to find options and play the correct ball when he got near goal, but he was quick on the ball and caused problems for the Peru defense when given space to run. Considering the trouble that Mexico have had on the right wing of late, be it with Javier Aquino or Giovani dos Santos, Chepo had to be excited and encouraged by what Barrera showed.

Unfortunately for Mexico, Barrera was one very few players who looked bright. Hugo Ayala was strong at the back and made his case to partner Hector Moreno going forward, while Jorge Torres Nilo put in his best shift in a Mexico shirt. Raul Jimenez also had a couple nice moments up top, but that was about the end of the list of impressive performances and if Jimenez falls into the "impressive" category then it is a low bar.

For all their troubles, Mexico did have a chance to win the match in the 69th minute when Christian Ramos was judged to have taken down Omar Bravo in the area. It was a very, very soft penalty, but a penalty nonetheless and Mexico wasn´t going to turn down the opportunity, but it went for naught. Angel Reyna´s spot kick was poor and Jose Carvallo was able to save it easily.

With a penalty wasted, Mexico wasn´t going to win. They slumped to another draw and another underwhelming performance. Being a friendly with domestic-based players only, it isn´t a match you can draw too many conclusions from or even put much stock in, but that probably won´t stop some people from stoking the fire on Mexico and Chepo.

Premier League move would interest Hernanes says agent

Hernanes´ agent has claimed that the Lazio star would be interested in a move to the Premier League in light of reports linking the Brazilian to Manchester City.

The former São Paulo man has been linked with a €17.5m deal to the Citizens with John Guidetti heading the other way.

But agent Joseph Lee says there has been no official contact from the Premier League outfit and claims Hernanes is happy in Rome.

"These are rumours and for now I do not wish to comment on them," Lee told LaLazioSiamoNoi.it.

"City are a top club at world level and Hernanes loves the Premier League but I have too much respect for Lazio to say any more.

"We discussed many things with president Claudio Lotito in September, including his contract, but the situation has remained unchanged since then. There are no other meetings planned.

"What would happen if an offer came in from Manchester City? I repeat, for now we are talking about rumours, but if it did arrive then Lotito would be forced to call us."

Braian Rodríguez linked with move to Internacional

Huachipato´s highly-rated striker Braian Rodríguez could join Internacional after his club are eliminated in Copa Libertadores.

The transfer fee is estimated in US$ 4 million, but the value may increase if Huachipato reach the Copa Libertadores Round of 16 amd that might also attract the interest of European clubs.

Zero Hora reports that a representative of Internacional was sent to Chile to talk with the striker, but Internacional´s board denies it.

Braian Rodríguez´ agent Gustavo Debeza talked to press about the player´s situation, he said: "All Brazilian clubs follow Braian, he is the Libertadores top scorer. Clubs from Italy are interested too, but no concrete offers yet. but you know football, things change all the time. We might have surprises in the end, but all Braian wants now is to beat Grêmio."

Braian Rodríguez is also deemed a potential replacement for Leandro Damião, who is expected to leave the club in the next European transfer window.

Internacional plan to sign a midfielder and a left-back as well as they plan to strengthen the squad for the national league.

Copa Libertadores judgement time approaches for last Chilean team

Huachipato, now Chile’s sole remaining representative in the Copa Libertadores, looks ahead to a pivotal match against Brazilian side Gremio, in an encounter that will determine whether it progresses to the next stage.

Despite overachieving in a demanding Libertadores group, which otherwise contains Fluminense, Grêmio and Caracas, Huachipato has disappointed in Chile’s Torneo Transición and finds itself in atrocious form when it comes to playing at home. The side has won just one game at its own stadium this calendar year.

To bolster home support, the club announced a “two for one” ticket offer for its decisive fixture against Gremio.

“The idea is that the stadium will be full so that the opposition can feel the pressure,” said veteran midfielder Francisco Arrué. “We need the support of the people, it is fundamental for the team.”

Other Huachipato players were quick to point out the unique magnitude of the game, which presents the club with the opportunity of progressing beyond the group stage of the Copa Libertadores for the first time in its history.

“This match is like a final for both teams,” said midfielder Nicolás Nuñez. “Gremio is known for its constant pressure in the opposition half and attacking style, but we will try and take advantage of this with our speed with and without the ball.”

Despite the significance of the match, one that represents Chile’s last hope of success in the competition, much of the spotlight from local media is focused squarely on a single player from the opposition: Eduardo Vargas.

Gremio now boast the talents of the Chilean star forward, currently on loan in Brazil from parent-club Napoli.

Vargas’ displays of blistering pace and clinical finishing for Universidad de Chile in the 2011 Copa Sudamericana, in which he scored 11 goals and helped his team to the title, earned him individual accolades as well as admiring glances from clubs in Europe. On the back of the all-conquering “La U” campaign, masterminded by current coach of the Chilean national team Jorge Sampaoli, he secured second place in the South American Footballer of the Year and subsequently a move to Italian giants Napoli.

The Chilean saw sparse playing time during his stint in Europe and largely failed to recapture his previous scoring form, offering no goals in his 19 games so far for the club, which in the past played host to South American luminaries such as Diego Maradona and Careca. In January Napoli decided that loaning Vargas back to his home continent would better suit his development and Brazilian club Gremio acted quickly to acquire his services.

Huachipato, meanwhile, prepares for Thursday in the knowledge that nothing less than a win is acceptable. The Chilean side and their Brazilian opponents are level on seven points, however Gremio currently occupies the second qualification place by means of a superior goal difference. As such, Huachipato can only progress to the round of 16 with a victory.

Just two points separate leaders Fluminense from Caracas, who lie bottom, and so all four teams in Group 8 can conceivably qualify. Both games will be held simultaneously, in what is sure to be another dramatic night in the Copa Libertadores on Thursday.

Fluminense
advance to the round of 16 if they do not lose to Caracas
win the group if they win or both matches are draws

Gremio
advance if they do not lose to Huachipato
win the group if they win and Fluminense do not defeat Caracas

Huachipato
advance if they defeat Gremio
win the group if they win and Fluminense do not defeat Caracas

Caracas
advance if they defeat Fluminense
win the group if they win and Huachipato and Grêmio draw

Flamengo set to sign biggest sponsorship deal in Brazil - report

Flamengo are in advanced negotiations with Caixa Econômica Federal, which is expected to commit R$ 35 million (13.4 million Euros) a year until 2015 to be the club´s primary sponsor.

The deal is expected to be signed next week and will surpass Caixa Econômica Federal´s R$ 32 million a year sponsorship of Corinthians.

The value might also be increased as Caixa Econômica Federal plan to support Flamengo´s Olympic sports.

The agreement will help Flamengo meet the goal of receiving at least R$ 80 million (30.6 million Euros) a year from sponsors.

Flamengo are currently sponsored by Adidas and Peugeot and recently started a new program to increase the amount of club members.

The club´s current board has been in charge since January and is lead by Eduardo Bandeira de Mello, who has vowed to improve the club´s financial situation.

Flamengo have let expensive players such as Vágner Love go, and sacked manager Dorival Júnior, whose salary was deemed too high.

Alisson representative confirms Vasco move

The press officer of Cruzeiro attacking midfielder Alisson has confirmed that his client will spend the remainder of 2013 on loan at Vasco da Gama, as part of the deal to take central defender Dedé in the opposite direction.

It has also been confirmed, though, that Vasco will have no option to purchase the talented youngster at the end of the loan period.

Alisson joined Cruzeiro in 2008 and impressed as part of the club´s Under-20 side who won the national title at youth level last season. He will now be unveiled in Rio de Janeiro at the end of the month.

"Alisson is confirmed with Vasco until the end of December. He will come on loan and both sides will pay his wages," Paschoalino said.

" He will be presented on 30 April to allow time to sort some personal issues in Belo Horizonte."

Dedé will be officially named as a Cruzeiro player on Friday afternoon, once medical examinations have been completed.
