Gremio stamps their ticket to the next round

The Brazilian team Gremio classified for the round of sixteen in the Copa LIbertadores 2013 after tying 1-1 in a visit to the Chilean champion Huachipato, who has now been eliminated from the tournament. The game was played in Talcahuano as part of Group 8 competition.

The goal for the Brazilian squad came by means of veteran midfielder Zé Roberto at 32 minutes, while the Chileans managed totie when defender Miguel Ceval scored at 88 minutes.

Both teams have 8 points, but the goal differential is what separate the two: Gremio (+4)classifies while Huachipato (+2) will not.

Several talented players shined for Gremio, including Zé Roberto, Argentinian forward Hernán Barcos, and young star Fernando, whose goal of the game - the only goal - gave his team not only the victory but also classification for the next round.

For its part, Huachipato needed to win to keep advancing in the international tournament, but never but together a coordinated and orderly attack to have a chance to win against a powerful Gremio squad. If their goal was to send in long passes for their players to recover for a chance to score, they failed. While they managed to send some passes deep and their star forward, Uruguayan Brian Rodríguez had good isolated plays, it was not enough to avoid elimination.

Gremio will play against Colombian team Santa Fe in the round of sixteen of the Copa Libertadores, while Huachipato has become the third Chilean team eliminated from the tournament.

Fluminense beats Caracas and arrives at the round of sixteen as leader

The Brazilian club Fluminense beat Caracas FC 1-0 this Thursday as part of the sixth and last round of games in Group 8 Copa Libertadores 2013 competition. Fluminense is now leader of their group, and as such will pass to the next round of competition.

Rafael Sobis scored the only goal in the game at 53 minutes.

With the result, and with the 1-1 Gremio - Huachipato tie, Fluminense has accumulated 11 points, followed by Gremio, who also have classified, with 8 points. Huachipato also has 8 points, but with a lower goal differential. Caracas is in last point with 6 points.

In the round of sixteen, Fluminense will face off against Emelec of Ecuador, the second place team in Group 4.

The important victory is the first home victory by the team coached by Abel Braga in this year´s Copa Libertadores tournament. They lost 3-0 to Gremio and tied 1-1 with Huachipato.

Caracas, for its part, stays winless when they visit Brazilian teams in this year´s Copa LIbertadores competition.

The game was played in Sao Januario stadium, which belongs to Vaco de Gama sporting club, as Engenhao, where Flumense was playing while the famed Maracaná stadium was being remodelled, was closed indefinitely for structural problems.

Engenhao stadium will host part of the athletic competitions during the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic games.

Sporting Cristal de Perú derrotó 1-0 este jueves a Palmeiras de Brasil en el estadio Miguel Grau del Callao, vecino a Lima, en partido de la sexta fecha del Grupo 2 de la Copa Libertadores.

El gol del equipo peruano fue anotado por el delantero Irven Avila a los 48 minutos.

El plantel celeste, eliminado prematuramente de la Libertadores, encaró el partido con la única motivación de despedirse con una victoria ante su parcialidad, mientras que el ´Verdao´, clasificado a los octavos y con un equipo alterno en el campo, buscaba un resultado positivo para ganar la llave.

Los celestes dispusieron de las mejores situaciones de gol, con los volantes Lobatón y el uruguayo Cazulo muy activos en el frente de ataque, en tanto que el ´Verdao´, con Souza y Caio, propuso jugar al contragolpe, pero no ofreció mayor peligro al portero peruano Diego Penny.

A pesar de la derrota, Palmeiras ganó la llave con 9 puntos, los mismos que sumó Tigre de Argentina, que venció 5-3 a Libertad de Paraguay en Asunción, pero con mejor diferencia de goles (0 contra -1).

Libertad y Sporting Cristal quedaron eliminados con 8 puntos.

Sporting Cristal defeats Palmeiras

Sporting Cristal of Peru defeated on Thursday Palmeiras of Brazil 1-0 at the Miguel Grau del Callao stadium, near Lima, in the sixth round of Group 2 at the Copa Libertadores.

Sporting got their goal from the boot of striker Irven Avila in the 48th minute.

Sporting had already been eliminated from the tournament and was playing for pride while Palmeiras was on their way to the next stage and so started a young side looking for a positive result to win the group.

Sporting had the best scoring chances with midfielders Lobatón and Cazulo very active in the front of attack. Palmeiras on the other hand with Souza and Caio proposed play on the counterattack, but offered no real threat to Peruvian goalkeeper Diego Penny.

Despite the loss Palmeiras won the group with 9 points the same as Tigre of Argentina, who defeated Paraguay´s Libertad 5-3 in Asuncion, but with a better goal difference (0 against -1).

Libertad and Sporting Cristal are eliminated with 8 points.

Tigre advanced to the round of 16 on Thursday by soundly defeating Paraguay´s Libertad 5-3 in the sixth round of Group 2 play at the ´Nicolás Leoz´ stadium in Asuncion.

Tigre got goals from Rubén Botta (10 and 78), Pérez García (28 and 54) and Gastón Díaz (35). Libertad´s goals came from Miguel Samudio (14), Ariel Núñez (37) and Pablo Velázquez (90+1).

The Argentinians, coached by Néstor Gorosito, opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Rubén Botta scored on a great individual play.

Four minutes later left back Miguel Samudio temporarily calmed the home crowd by tying the game.

Matías Pérez García took a pass from Botta to put one more on the board in the 28th minute.

The beginning of the end for the Paraguayans came in the 32nd minute when Gastón Díaz scored from the spot.

Libertad, coached by Uruguayan Rubén Israel, was resurrected partially through Ariel Núñez´s goal, thanks to a Pablo Guiñazú setup, in the 37th minute.

Matías Pérez García put the fourth past the Libertad keeper in the 54th thanks again from an assist by Botta.

Botta wasn´t left out of the party when he scored from distance in the 77th minute. He scored after a pass from Pérez García in the most spectacular goal of the night.

With this result Palmeiras of Brazil, who at the same time lost 1-0 to Peru´s Sporting Cristal in Lima, ended in first place in the group with 9 points, the same as Tigre but with a better goal difference (0 against -1).

Libertad and Sporting Cristal are eliminated each with 8 points.

´Bolillo´ Gómez, despedido del DIM

BOGOTA -- El técnico Hernán Darío Gómez fue despedido por el Independiente Medellín, amenazado por el descenso en el fútbol colombiano.

La decisión fue tomada por la directiva del club, luego que el estratega, de 57 años, se negara a dimitir, según informó a los medios el preparador físico Elkin Sánchez a la salida de una dilatada reunión.

El presidente del conjunto rojo, Sergio Betancur, confirmó más tarde la medida. "Se tomó la decisión de retirar el cuerpo técnico por los malos resultados... para Hernán Darío fue una situación muy dura, pero lamentablemente los resultados no se le dieron", dijo Betancur a la radio local Caracol.

"El viernes hablaremos con los jugadores y su situación (permanencia) la definirá el nuevo cuerpo técnico, que esperamos definido lo antes posible", indicó Betancur.

"Quizás en dos semanas tengamos resuelto el tema del nuevo cuerpo técnico, no sabemos", cargo para el que hay "varios nombres en carpeta" aunque el directivo declinó referirse a nombres o nacionalidades.

´Bolillo´ Gómez, ex técnico de las selecciones de Colombia, Ecuador y Guatemala, llegó al Medellín a mediados de la pasada temporada y sorpresivamente lo llevó a la final del torneo Clausura.

La posición de Gómez y sus asesores se debilitó por la pobre campaña en el Apertura y la derrota 3-2 ante Atlético Huila el miércoles en la 11ma fecha acabó con la paciencia de los directivos.

Bajo la dirección de Gómez, el DIM logró este año 9 puntos de 33 posibles. Si el torneo terminará en este momento, sería el equipo que perdería la categoría pues figura último en la tabla del descenso.

Gómez asumió la dirección del Medellín tras abandonar el banco de la selección colombiana, en medio de un escándalo por un incidente con una mujer en agosto de 2011.

Medellín figura antepenúltimo en el Apertura con nueve puntos, 11 menos que el líder Santa Fe y encabeza la tabla especial del descenso con 89 puntos, tres menos que Alianza Petrolera.

Juninho Pernambucano admits blame for Red Bulls red card

New York Red Bulls´ midfielder Juninho Pernambucano has admitted his fault as he was sent off in a Major League Soccer game against Sporting Kansas City.

The midfielder kicked a ball at Sporting Kansas City´s goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen in the last minutes of the game, leading the referee to send him off.

The former Vasco player told reporters after the game: "I’m not happy about it and I don’t know how many games I’ll get as far as a suspension, it wasn’t my first card, but I hope it was my last one."

Juninho blamed the Sporting KC players for the situation, he said: "I was very frustrated with the goalkeeper, who was delaying the game a lot and I tried to rush him but I felt he exaggerated a lot. I don’t think I hit him in the face."

Red Bulls´ manager Mike Petke admits he will talk with him, he said during the post-game press conference: "He’s a competitive person and I certainly know that sometimes the emotions get the most of you."

He added: "Of course, I’m going to speak to him but he is a total team player and perhaps [this is] a bit out of his character. He’s an emotional person who wants to win and he let his emotions get the best of him. It’s happened to me hundreds of times, happens to many of these players."
