Friday: Newell’s go top with win over Velez and Racing Colon ends in draw

On Wednesday night Newell’s Old Boys and Velez Sarsfield will meet again, this time in the Copa Libertadores last 16, and it will be Newell’s who will feel more confident after an impressive win in Liniers and the three points that sends them to the top of the table. Missing top scorer, Nacho Scocco, it could have been easy to assume that Newell’s would pose much less of an attacking threat but the 3 – 1 scoreline shows that there is more than just Scocco to this side. There was a scare at the final whistle when Velez defender, Ivan Bella collapsed suffering from, what has now been identified, as an epileptic seizure but thankfully the player is ok. In the later game, Racing drew 1 – 1 with Colon in Avellaneda. World cup winner, Mauro Camoranesi had given Racing the lead only to see Ivan Moreno y Fabianesi equalise late on.

Despite the absense of Nacho Scocco, Newell’s scored three good goals. The first a well taken finish by Martin Tonso, which was cancelled out by Velez’s Ezequiel Rescaldani, the second a long range effort by Marcos Caceres (which perhaps the keeper should have done better with), and the third a fine strike from outside the box by Maxi Urruti. The result provides an interesting talking point ahead of the Libertadores clash.

Racing will be frustrated not to have picked up all 3 points from this game as they created a number of good opportunities. The goal came from a nice knockdown by Luciano Vietto and Mauro Camoranesi finished well but really they should have finished the game off. Instead, the resiliant Colon side, since Morant’s appointment, fought until the end and in the 85th minute Ivan Moreno y Fabianesi tapped in the equaliser from Jorge Achucarro’s cutback.

Synd for Keylor, at han ikke holder den helt hjem, men han var prisgivet ved målet.

Værd at bemærke var han af træner JIM decideret foretrukket over en ellers kampklar Munúa, der som bekendt har lukket en del mål ind mod både Real og Depor.

Så er det Valencia - Málaga, hvilken kamp er endnu bedre repræsenteret af det amerikanske kontinent.

U-17 Sudamericano: Venezuela in first place

The Venezuelan goals were scored by Andrés Ponce who was the star of the day with a brace.

Beto Da Silva scored the opening goal on the day for Peru in the 34th minute.

The final round is being played in the Juan Gilberto Funes stadium in the city of La Punta, in San Luis, 800 miles west of Buenos Aires.

Venezuela leads all teams with 7 points followed by Brazil and Argentina (4), Paraguay (3), Uruguay (1) and Peru (0).

Peru started the game well with good pressure on the opponent´s side of the field which generated several scoring chances but Venezuela was better on the day and came back to win.

The Peruvians came into the game fresh from two defeats to Argentina (0-2) and Paraguay (1-3).

U-17 Sudamericano: Uruguay at the World Cup´s doors

Uruguay defeated Paraguay 3-1 this Sunday in the third round of the hexagonal final of the U-17 Sudamericano. They are in the middle of the fight for the four spots given to the 2013 World Cup to be held in the United Arab Emirates.

The Uruguayan team jumped to four points, together with Argentina and Brazil, followed by Paraguay (3) and Peru (0), while Venezuela climbed to the top with 7 points after a 2-1 win over Peru on Sunday in the match that opened the third round.

Uruguay got goals from Marcio Benítez (1 minute), Kevin Méndez (8) and Franco Acosta (16) while Antonio Sanabria (68) got the lone goal for Paraguay from a free-kick.

The game was played in the Juan Gilberto Funes stadium in the city of La Punta, San Luis, some 800 kilometers to the west of Buenos Aires.

The Uruguayans, world runners-up, got back to winning ways against Paraguay after tying Argentina (3-3), who scored in the last minute, and a loss to Brazil (1-0) in the first game of the hexagonal.

Paraguay on the other hand lost 1-0 to Venezuela in the first game and then got their first 3 points by defeating Peru 3-1 in the next game.

In the next round of games on Wednesday Uruguay will face Venezuela, Paraguay goes up against Argentina, and Brazil will measure themselves against Peru.

The tournament gives four spots to the World Cup to be held from October 17 to November 8 in the United Arab Emirates.
