Brasil 2 - 2 Chile

http://www.youtube.com/w…3Za4MoZIt4c

http://www.youtube.com/w…cdMB_tTnoi4

Santos, Monterrey battle to 0-0 draw

TORREON, Mexico - Santos and 10-man Monterrey played to a scoreless tie in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final Wednesday night at the Estadio Corona.

The game was a rematch of last year´s final, won by Monterrey, 3-2 on aggregate. It was the first time that either played in a CCL match that finished goalless.

The second leg will be played May 1 at the Estadio Tecnologico in Monterrey. The confederation´s champion advances to the FIFA Club World Cup this December in Morocco.

Monterrey, the two-time defending champion, was reduced to 10 men in the 66th minute, when Mexican referee Roberto Garcia sent Cesar Delgado off with a straight red card for a late challenge on Herculez Gomez.

The United States international came on for an injured Oribe Peralta 13 minutes earlier.

In a closely contested first half that saw the two Mexican squads combine for five yellow cards, Monterrey had the first scoring chance as Humberto Suazo nearly capitalized on a poor clearance by Felipe Baloy. But the Chilean international, who took a pass from Delgado, turned and fired from 10 meters, which was saved by Oswaldo Sanchez.

In the 16th minute, Santos had its first dangerous chance, when Carlos Darwin Quintero tapped from the edge of the six-yard box, but Jonathan Orozco was there to get a piece of the shot as the host had one of its four first-half corner kicks.

Three minutes later, Suazo turned provider, playing a through ball into the box to Delgado, but Sanchez pounced off his line to make a save at the edge of the six before Edgar Lugo cleared.

On the half hour mark, Aldo De Nigris had his first sniff at goal, turning and firing an effort from 20 meters that went right at Sanchez.

Three minutes into the second half, Suazo´s open header from 10 meters froze Sanchez, but the hammered off the post.

In the 53rd minute, Monterrey midfielder Walter Ayovi picked up a deflected cross, but his shot was off the target.

Four minutes from full time, Quintero sped toward the box and fed Gomez to his right. But Darvin Chavez blocked the shot and the ball went out for Santos´ seventh corner.

In the second minute of second half stoppage time, Leobardo Lopez made a desperation tackle in the box to ensure Gomez didn´t latch on to Mauro Cejas´ cross near the endline in the game´s final scoring chance.

VM-arenaen var delt i to.

Lanus drop more points making it tight at the top and Tigre pip Argentinos
Lanus drew 0 – 0 away to Union to go level on top with Newell’s on 22 points

but will be disappointed to see their lead cut. However, they remain unbeaten and don’t have the distraction of the Copa Libertadores.

Tigre left it late to defeat Argentinos Juniors 1 – 0. A feisty affair with three red cards.

Brazil 2-2 Chile - Neymar not bothered by fans booing

Brazil were booed off by their own fans during and after the 2-2 draw with Chile at the Mineirão stadium in Belo Horizonte.

The performance was once again below the expectations, leading the fans to express their frustration, and Neymar, as the team´s main star, was especially targeted by them even though he scored one of Brazil´s goals.

Neymar is not bothered by their reaction though, he said after the game: "It´s not good to be booed, but to be honest I´m not bothered. Our national team are booed in any place we play."

"It looks easy for those that are outside, but it´s hard on the pitch, as the team have not gelled. We have to get used to the booing so we can be on the pitch with a clear mind."

The Santos star took a knock in the end of the game and there were some concerns among the club´s fans.

Despite that, Neymar expects to be ready for the São Paulo State League quarter-finals against Palmeiras, he said: "I felt some pain in that last play, but I´ll now rest, apply some ice because I hope to be ready to play on Saturday."

Brazil 2-2 Chile - Scolari admits the Seleção need to improve

Brazil´s national team manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has admitted that the Seleção need to improve, following the 2-2 draw with Chile.

The poor performance has increased pressure on Scolari and on the national team as the fans booed off the players

Scolari told reporters after the game: "We didn´t play well, if we had played better, fans would have reacted differently."

"We didn´t have as many chances as in the other game [against Bolivia] and we let Chile feel too comfortable. It´s normal the fans react that way as we didn´t bring them to our side. I have nothing to criticize, when we play well, they will probably have a different reaction."

The Brazilian national team manager blamed the lack of time to train for Brazil´s poor performance, he said: "Our team meet on Monday, train on Tuesday and play on Wednesday."

"There is no empathy with the fans because there is no empathy with the team either. We´ll be in better conditions when we are training for the Confederations Cup. We still need to improve and we understand the fans reaction."

Scolari was asked by a reporter if he will quit if Brazil fail to go far in the Confederations Cup, he said: "No comments, this is a joke."

The Uruguayan Perspective

Villain or Victim?

So the news is in Jack! – Suárez is officially the FA’s personal doormat. Not that Suárez is completely without blame, but the FA’s 10 game ban – which will supposedly rule him out till October of this year – is a tad excessive, wouldn’t you agree? And it sounds more and more like the FA has a personal axe to grind, either that or the FA has a bug up their ass when it comes to Luis Suárez.

Is there a personal vendetta because it is Luis Suárez? Well you tell me, in a recent interview Gus Poyet brought up the example of Jermain Defoe who in 2006 did the exact same thing Suárez was alleged to have done last Sunday and Defoe only drew a yellow card for his troubles –– the disparity in punishments really calls to attention the FA’s role in policing the EPL. It seems to many, and that many includes us, the average Joe Schmo who watches from afar that the punishment does not fit the crime some of the time.
A double standard clearly exists, even Daily Mail columnist Martin Samuel wondered yesterday, why the FA waits for these bizarre incidents to take place before taking action and why the EPL’s referees escape blame when they do occur:

“Suarez will miss the rest of this season and as much as one month of next because, randomly, referee Kevin Friend was unaware of the extent of his transgression. Had he followed Bennett’s lead and merely booked Suarez, we presume nothing would be done. The governance of football cannot rely on oversights or bizarre twists of fate…Yet is this the way forward for the game? Are we merely to rely on a set of haphazard circumstances falling fortuitously if justice is to be served?” (Martin Samuel, Daily Mail – April 23, 2013)

When the FA comes down not only on Suárez but on John Terry too – no one is actually being helped. In Terry’s instance, he was all but booted out of England’s squad after being stripped of his captaincy. The referee who missed out on the part when Terry allegedly abused Anton Ferdinand escaped any reprimand, the same occurred when Suárez allegedly abused Evra, the referee wasn’t suspended or reprimanded either for his little role in the tale. Strange that the English, who want to clean up the game, even going as far as championing Goal-Line technology –– which the EPL will debut next season –– could care less about their referees. More often than not, while the player shares 90% of the blame when it comes to game violence/altercations, the referees who fail to catch provocations, altercations and “shit going down” are just as guilty.

Referees aside – Suárez went willingly into the bear-trap. When Mike Tyson is commenting on your life… MIKE TYSON!!! You know something’s not right in the world, but essentially what Suárez is guilty off is being the pantomime villain the world loves to hate. So you have to ask yourself, is Suárez sane? And I’m being serious here… I know there’s a thin line between genius and madman but you’d think after the excessive ban he served out last season, guilty or not, he would’ve learned his lesson by now… but he didn’t. And that’s the rub, there’s a part of Suárez that enjoys being the “Cantona” of the match, or the “Mike Tyson” of the pitch. Some athletes feed off negativity, I can recall the NBA’s Dennis Rodman engaging in whacko behavior of this type for reasons known only to himself and José Mourinho as well (remember when he poked Tito Vilanova’s eye… for fun?!) – but there you have it, Poyet said it best, “If you want Suarez to be a Saint, we’ll lose him” and this is true.

What makes Suárez, Suárez, is the way he reads the game – sure sometimes his judgment is off, like when he dived in front of Everton’s manager David Moyes to get a laugh… I laughed as I’m sure many got a chuckle out of that one too, but Suárez doesn’t care about the bullseye – this is what makes Suárez what he is. Other players, even some in Uruguay’s NT get down on themselves when things don’t go their way but Suárez even when he is misfiring continues to play his game, looks for the edge, tries to turn a negative into a positive, this is the underlying beauty of his game – this is what has made him untouchable on Uruguay’s NT.

In Uruguay, he was turned into a National Hero for the most innocuous action, deflecting a ball with a hand, an act which resulted in his ejection from the Quarterfinal match between Uruguay and Ghana in the 2010 World Cup. What made him a villain to the world was his celebration of Gyan’s penalty miss as he went into the tunnel. But who is to blame here? Suárez for celebrating or the camera for tracking Suárez as he made his way into the tunnel – it’s the media stupid! They turned Suárez into the “Bad Guy” and now complain that he “takes it too far.”

Taking it too far, would be like the Football player who gets on the pitch in the opening minutes of “The Last Boy Scout” with a loaded gun to shoot the opposition – that’s taking it too far or Cantona kung-fu kicking a spectator, or Rodman dropkicking a photographer after falling into the stands… that’s taking it too far.

The media continues to spin what is so easy to sell, Balotelli’s self-promotion, Tévez’ sulking and Suárez the out of control Tasmanian devil. But in creating this monster that now the FA wants no part off, the EPL, FA and media all share the blame, not just Suárez – it’s almost like when Batman and the Joker tangoed at the end of Batman (1989) on top of the old Church tower, each taking turns saying to one another, “you made me” –– it’s childish.
Sure there are those out there who aren’t completely satisfied with the game of football, but last time I checked, this is still a game. Even Mourinho, the text book example of the cerebral tactician treats this sport as a game

"Why so serious? It´s just a game!"
Because that’s the bottom line, it’s a game, with a round ball, it’s structured chaos, a man with a whistle, with cards in his pocket runs around and is expected to be on top of everything that goes on during the contest, and this same individual has assistants who run from the edge of the pitch with a flag often getting the call completely wrong! –– if you had to explain this to a Martian curious about the sport, surely the Martian would burst out laughing – but now we need to make this game more scientific, we need goal-line technology, and heck why not, more linesmen… ahh check that, must be politically correct, Lines-person to catch more “shit going down” to turn the sport into a stop-short contest, handbrake action, sort of what the NFL & NBA has become in North America.

But all this straying off topic doesn’t help Suarez’ cause. Clearly his behavior whether some get a laugh out of it or not, is not doing him any favors. There’s a football career at stake here, and the golden question here is whether Suarez is still interested in making his living playing football. Balotelli, four years younger than Suárez got the point that not everything was roses and went back to Italy, perhaps Suárez should take a page from Balotelli’s book and simply force his way out of English football as well. Suárez might be a villain to some but he sure as hell shouldn’t see himself as a victim, he can still salvage his career by getting out! If Suárez wants to stay, well… he asked for it, staying would prove to me that he is out of his mind –– as for me, as a spectator, I’m done with that shit-hole league. Keep it, fold it eight different ways and shove it right up where the sun don’t shine… oh that’s right, there is no sun in England!
