U-17 Sudamericano: Uruguay defeats Peru after qualifying for the World Cup

http://www.youtube.com/w…v0ycs2vylYg

Uruguay beat Peru 4-3 in the final round of the Sudamericano tournament in Argentina. Uruguay had qualified earlier to the 2013 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates when Brazil and Paraguay drew 2-2.

The Uruguayans finished the tournament with 8 points behind Brazil (9) and momentarily tied with Argentina and Venezuela (both 8) who play later for the title at the Juan Gilberto Funes stadium in the city of La Punta, San Luis, 800 kilometers west of Buenos Aires.

The top four teams have qualified which means Paraguay and Peru are the two teams eliminated.

Uruguay got goals from Franco Acosta (3 and 30) and Franco Pizzichillo (30 and 65). Peru´s goals came from Beto Luis Da Silva (20 and 64) and Dangelo Artiaga (69).

Peru played their best game of the final stage and came within a whisker of an equalizer, but ended up with nothing and now go home without getting a point.

The Uruguayans, world runners-up, had a mixed performance in the final round in which they got two wins, two draws and one defeat.

U-17 Sudamericano: Paraguay draws with Brazil and is out of the championship

http://www.youtube.com/w…xqDufef_eo4

Paraguay was able to get the tie in an electrifying game where the Brazilians were playing for their eleventh regional title.

With the draw Brazil reaches 9 points and is the current leader ahead of both Argentina and Venezuela who have 8 points followed by Uruguay (5), Paraguay (4) and Peru (0).

The Paraguayans opened the scoring through a Ronaldo Martínez Rolón header at the 18 minute mark. Brazil´s Kenedy (32) was able to level taking advantage of a defensive slip-up and then scored again in the 78th minute with a header.

It appeared that Brazil was going to go home with the win if not for Antonio Sanabria (90+1) who was able to get the tying goal in stoppage time.

Paraguay, who reached the final round as the leader of Group A ahead of Argentina and Venezuela, got a win (Peru 3-1) and a draw, while losing to Uruguay, Venezuela and Argentina.

For their part Brazil qualified for the final round as leader of Group B and then got two wins and three draws in the final stage.

The World Cup in the UAE will be held October 17 to November 8

Argentina under 17s claim the South American championship

http://www.youtube.com/w…HTF6iiBJnpA

For the third time in history Argentina won the South America under 17 championship despite failing to beat Venezuela in their final game earlier. A 2 – 2 draw was enough to hold on to top spot and although they were level on points with Venezuela and Brasil the superior goal difference granted Argentina the trophy. Brasil’s earlier draw with Paraguay meant Argentina needed only a point and despite falling behind in the 16th minute, a Leonardo Suarez brace gave Argentina the advantage. Venezuela scored a last minute equaliser but the point was enough to claim victory for Argentina. Internet sensation, following his spectacular overhead kick, Sebastian Druissi ended as Argentina’s top scorer but the tournament’s golden boot went to Uruguay’s, Franco Acosta.

Valencia closes in on CCL berth

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Haiti´s Valencia took a massive step towards qualifying for the 2013/14 CONCACAF Champions League with a pulsating 4-3 win over Portmore United, while Boys´ Town reignited its campaign with a 2-0 victory over Bayamon FC on Sunday at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Valencia leads Group Two with maximum six points from two games, three ahead of the Jamaican pair of Boys´ Town and Portmore United. Puerto Rico´s Bayamon FC is still looking for its first points.

A top-of-the-table clash between Valencia and Portmore produced a seven-goal thriller on a cool and windy evening.

The Haitians jumped out to a sizeable advantage, scoring three goals before 35 minutes had passed.

Jean Robert´s 21st minute goal was sandwiched by an Augustin Walson brace. The 24-year-old struck in the sixth and 34th minutes to take his tournament total to three.

Portmore United staged a furious second-half rally in an attempt to salvage at least a point. Sue-Lae McCalla pulled one back in the 69th minute and captain Adrian Reid nodded home 12 minutes later to slice the deficit to one.

Substitute Joseph Roody sealed the win for Valencia, though, with his first goal of the competition in the 83rd minute.

Ricardo Morris netted for Portmore´s third in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

In the nightcap, Boys´ Town topped Bayamon courtesy of a double strike from Marvin Stewart, who scored in each half.

Stewart converted from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute after referee Brian Willett whistled for a handball in the box.

The 29-year-old made his presence felt again in the 53rd, slotting home from close range off an assist from substitute Adrian King.

The competition continues on Tuesday with Portmore taking on Bayamon at 6:00 pm, followed an encounter between Valencia and Boys´ Town at 8:00 pm.

Vasco U16 team subject to racist abuse by Juventus youth players

Vasco´s under 16 team were subjected to racist abuse by Juventus youth players as they were facing the Italian team for the Cittá di San Bonifacio International Tournament.

The Brazilian team won the match 1-0 with a goal scored by Bruno Cosendey, but Juventus players racially abused Vasco players throughout the match, by calling them ´monkeys´.

Vasco have officially protested, expressing their disgust over the events that happened during the match and demanding that the tournament´s organization severely punish those responsible for the racist abuse.

They released a note signed by club´s president Roberto Dinamite describing the incidents and reminding that UEFA, FIFA and other football organizations want to kick racism out of football.

Vasco also mentioned that they were the first team in Brazil to sign players from African descent, thus being one of the first to fight against racism in football.

Besides beating Juventus 1-0, Vasco also beat A.C. Sambonifacese 4-1.

The tournament includes other traditional teams such as Inter Milan, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Barcelona.

Shakhtar boss lauds Fernandinho after title success

Shakhtar Donetsk manager Mircea Lucescu has praised midfielder Fernandinho and Croatian full-back Dario Srna for their contributions to the team´s title success on Sunday, in a 1-1 draw with Metalist Kharkiv.

With the team virtually assured of the title anyway, thanks to a 15-point gap at the top of the table, it looked like they would have to wait to celebrate their success as Marko Devic opened the score for the visitors in the first-half.

Lucescu, though, rang the changes at the break and reserved special praise for both Srna and Fernandinho´s role in turning the game around.

"In the first half, we probably played below our capabilities, he said. "Metalist could have scored more than one goal, they created more chances.

"The opponents were better in challenges for the ball in the middle of the park, and in the area where Douglas and Taison played, on their part in particular, there was more aggression—they had the advantage. We expected it to be like that, but we did not expect to concede a completely unnecessary goal.

"In the second half, everything changed on the pitch. I would like to mention the character of two players in this regard - Fernandinho and Srna.

"They showed by their game that they couldn’t leave the pitch today without winning the title. They were a sparkplug for the rest.

São Paulo manager Ney Franco says they need to improve to beat Atlético Mineiro

São Paulo´s manager Ney Franco believes the team need to improve a lot if they want to beat Atlético Mineiro in Copa Libertadores.

The Tricolor struggled to beat Penapolense 1-0 at the Morumbi stadium for the quarter-finals of the São Paulo State League yesterday.

The manager commented after the game: "If we are to talk about Atlético Mineiro, I liked what we did here [at Morumbi in the group stage when we won 2-0], but to beat Atlético Mineiro we have to do a lot more than we did against Penapolense."

"We will talk about this soon, we have to rest and rethink the team, the transition problem. In order to win, we´ll need to play the same way we won the first time."

São Paulo will face Atlético Mineiro on Thursday for the first leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 16, and they will meet arch-rivals Corinthians in the São Paulo league semifinals next weekend.

Yordy Reyna leading Peru´s next generation

Name: Yordy Reyna
Age: 19
Club: Alianza Lima
Position: Forward
Nationality: Peru

The South American Youth Championship is always a good opportunity to spot rising stars of the world game. After all, in 2011, the likes of Neymar, Lucas Moura and Oscar all featured in Brazil´s squad alone, while in 2009, Eduardo Salvio, Sandro and Salomon Rondon were just some of those who announced their arrival as potential forces in world football. There can be little doubt, then, that some of the many stars of the 2013 tournament will also go on to achieve much greater things, and there are several players already well on their way to doing so.

One such player is Peru forward Yordy Reyna, star of domestic giants Alianza Lima, and one of the most highly rated young attacking players on the continent. It has been a busy few months for Reyna, who has followed up his success at Under-20 level with three senior caps, and it appears that his progress will continue to gather pace for some time yet. While there is no definite talk of a move to Europe this summer, his exit is already being widely anticipated, as Peru looks to Reyna to help lead a very talented generation of emerging players.

In recent years, Peru have been one of the weakest footballing nations in South America, but times look as though they are about to change. Besides Reyna, the country can boast a series of young players who have the potential to make their way to the elite rungs of world football. The likes of Paolo Guerrero, Juan Manuel Vargas and Jefferson Farfan, too, still have a few more years left on the clock, and they will surely play an important role in guiding youngsters such as Luis Advincula, Yoshimar Yotun, Cristian Benevente, Christian Cueva, Irven Avila and Hernan Hinostroza through into the senior side. There is enough talent emerging to suggest that World Cup qualification in 2018 is now a real possibility.

Reyna, though, is perhaps the brightest of the bunch. He is already playing regular first-team football for his club and boasts a more than respectable goalscoring record. He is, though, facing some important career decisions in the coming months. Having finally settled upon an agent, ending a dispute between two potential representatives, Reyna must now work with Raul Gonzales - also the agent of Farfan - to secure a suitable next step. Suggestions have been made that Reyna will join his elder compatriot in Germany with Schalke later this summer, while Shakhtar Donetsk are also believed to have taken a liking to the player.

The player himself has thus far remained quiet on talk of a move, but has confirmed that Alianza hope to earn $3 million for his services. It is a very affordable price tag, considering both his age and talent. However, with just over 12 months left on his contract, it is now a case of the club needing to maximise their potential income on a player who is highly unlikely to renew his current deal.

It is easy to see why the freshly-capped Peru star is attracting interest. A versatile forward, Reyna is blessed with extreme pace, as well as good close control. At 5´7”, he is never going to be a target-man as such, but he runs the channels well and has enough core body strength and technical ability to hold up the ball when required. He is perhaps, though, most suited to operating as a second striker, and it would also be easy to imagine him starting life in Europe from a wide position. Indeed, given his stature, pace, attacking nature and origins at Alianza Lima, there are similarities with the rise of Farfan at around the same age.

If there was any doubts as to Reyna´s ability to cope with the increased physicality of football in Northern Europe, they will have been lessened following the attacker´s composed display in a fiery derby fixture with rivals Universitario recently. Reyna was handed some rough treatment in a game that would eventually see four red cards handed out - the majority for violent conduct. The teenage forward, though, kept his bearings in the heat of battle, and popped up with the game´s decisive goal with just six minutes remaining. It was the one moment of real quality from either side and a fitting way to settle the encounter. With self-belief in abundance, Reyna has shown that he is not afraid to go toe-to-toe with overly physical opponents - both of which are qualities which can only serve him well in the coming years.

Whether or not he is able to reach the top levels of the game remains to be seen. He has, though, the basic tools required to at least make a good attempt at doing so. Wherever he should end up moving, though, he must ensure that he gets playing time. South America has seen many talented players head to Europe over the past few decades only to see their career stall in the face of a lack of minutes on the pitch. Reyna is talented enough to make an immediate impact later this year, he simply needs to select a club where he will be handed that opportunity to impress.

Queretaro feeling the heat of relegation

Though Liga MX may follow the style of most American leagues by deciding a final champion based on a playoff system, it also emulates European promotion and relegation. At the end of each Clausura, which is the closing leg of the two championships in a season, one team leaves the competition of 18 clubs to go down to the Ascenso MX level.

This year, the mathematical formula that determines relegation (a points-per-game ratio over two seasons) has put Queretaro in that danger zone. The club is all-but-certainly fated to fall, but the knowledge of that outcome has not dimmed the fighting spirit of the players.

A Gallo Blanco, or White Rooster, might be Queretaro´s mascot, but they did not show any white flags of surrender to Guadalajara, which still had a ghost of a chance of making the playoffs if they could manage a victory at home. Yet even while playing a man down for a large portion of the second half, Queretaro refused to admit defeat or even settle for a respectable draw. They clung on to their advantage over Chivas, pulling out a 2-1 victory that doomed Chivas to a record fifth loss in a row.

http://www.youtube.com/w…Ew-q-7UKcBU

One win won´t really change the likely descent of Queretaro, but it does seem a point in favor of the argument that relegation really does make each game count for something. Queretaro´s salvation now lies in not only winning the next match, but also hanging 11 goals on Pachuca. Granted, that´s very unlikely, but this is a club that has demonstrated a willingness to try for the nearly impossible.

Chivas, meanwhile, appeared to give up not only on the playoffs -- they seemed like a club that had given up entirely. It´s been a horrid season for them, and perhaps the only thing that can wake and shake the organization back on track would be an ownership change.

For most other clubs in Liga MX, playoff positioning was more of an issue. Monterrey might already have its hands full with the possibility of becoming a three-time victor of the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday, but the club didn´t want to give up on the dream of the playoffs, either. It wasn´t an easy task versus derby rivals Tigres, but with a goal from Leobardo Lopez, Monterrey managed the feat. The club still needs other results to go their way in the final weekend, but the playoffs are within reach.

http://www.youtube.com/w…sDbSHsRHxAY

Pumas, meanwhile, was one of the clubs that sought a spot in the playoffs with authority, defeating Jaguares by the score of 3-0. Javier Cortes scored twice. The sprightly little forward seems to be rounding into top form at the perfect time.

http://www.youtube.com/w…kJrGJoCr-D8

No forward, however, could be on more of a scoring tear than Club America´s Christian ´Chucho´ Benitez. The Ecuadorian striker recorded a hat-trick versus Pachuca in a 4-2 game that was a showcase for his skill at putting the ball in the net. Benitez may indeed be feuding with his coach, but it seems to have only fueled his hunger for goals.

http://www.youtube.com/w…mdLjuQ5_qbw

Another club on the hunt is Cruz Azul, who confirmed their spot in the playoffs with a win over another club that had already clinched a playoff date - Santos Laguna. Christian Gimenez scored the lone goal. He and others on Cruz Azul have pointed to the Copa MX trophy as a turning point for the team. Perhaps clearing the hurdle of winning a championship has opened the floodgates for Cruz Azul, leaving them eager for much more.

http://www.youtube.com/w…r1WA5NrKY_4

Tijuana, though, is now completely out of the running to defend their previous championship, after a loss to San Luis.
Morelia, in contrast, is a club with a lot of momentum following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Toluca.

http://www.youtube.com/w…edudgptNmGs

http://www.youtube.com/w…P5DUyhIykqM

Though safely in the playoffs, Atlas appeared listless in a 1-1 draw versus Puebla, drawing accusations from Queretaro fans that the Atlas players didn´t try hard specifically to doom the White Roosters to relegation. Even if the claims are baseless, it is worthwhile to note that the possibility was even raised. When games are analyzed not only for outcome, but for effort, they really do matter.

Martino: "Scocco y Vietto, notables"
