Soccer roundup: O’Higgins on top after weekend of upsets
O’Higgins 2-0 Unión Española
Triumphing in a crucial encounter with the former leaders, third-place O’Higgins leapfrogged into pole position Friday, leaving all to play for in the final stage of the season.
Unión Española got off to a promising start with several early chances, of which Gustavo Canales’ strike from outside the box, which hit the crossbar, was the closest.
O’Higgins came back soon after, however, with a textbook finish from Carlos Escobar 19 minutes in to put the team from Rancagua ahead.
Matías Abelairas came close to evening the score for Unión Española in the second half, hitting the post from a free kick.
Luis Pedro Figueroa soon put an end to the home side’s hope of evening the score though, as he cooly slid the ball past the Española keeper in a nice bit of counter-attack play from O’Higgins. Sebastián Jaime kept things interesting, hitting the framework for “Los Hispanos” for the third time, but it was too little too late for the table leaders.
The defeat adds to Union Española’s recent poor form, finally knocking them off top stop after dominating the first part of the season. In contrast, the team from Rancagua now have a slender one-point lead with only four games left to play.
Universidad Católica 1-1 Deportes Iquique
“Los Cruzados” failed to capitalize on last week’s win, only managing a draw against struggling Iquique. Despite dominating most of the game, Católica quality in front of goal and were too- often no match for a strong performance from Iquique keeper Rodrigo Naranjo.
Enzo Andía headed Católica into the lead 38 minutes in, but the home team’s elation was short-lived thanks to Rodrigo Díaz’s equalizing from a free kick seven minutes later.
The second half saw plenty of chances, but good saves at both ends kept the two teams at deadlock.
Saturday’s draw means Católica missed the chance to go top, but remain very much in the race equalling second place Unión Española for points with an equal number of games played.
Everton 3-0 Santiago Wanderers
Wanderers went into this derby on the back of three straight wins, but its ambition of sneaking into contention for the top spots was checked by a strong showing from its old rivals.
Everton took the lead 18 minutes into the first half thanks to Emilio Romero’s calm finish following some strong counter-attack play from the home side.
Ten minutes later Alex Von-Schwedler furthered Everton’s lead, heading home a free kick from Ángel Rojas.
The second half was no better for the visitors as Everton continued to dominate.
Running down the left flank José Luis Muñoz beat his man before knocking the ball into the far corner, increasing the lead to three with only 12 minutes to play.
Wanderer’s woes were not quite complete, however, only two minutes after conceding Ezequial Luna’s flailing arm earnt him a second yellow card and a sending off, sealing the visitors fate.
Audax Italiano 1-0 Palestino
There were a few half chances in the first half but neither side looked too threatening until Audax Italiano broke the deadlock 66 minutes in.
Despite not actually making any contact with the ball, Sebastián Sáez laid claim to the match´s only goal after his bald head came within a hair’s length of Marco Medel’s goalbound cross. The Italiano forward is in impressive form this season, scoring more than 65 percent of the team’s goals as well as leading the league’s overall top goalscorer standings.
Spurned into action by conceding, Palestino fought back and had several good chances but were unable to even the deficit. The Italiano win means it sneaks ahead of Palestino on goal difference as both teams have 16 points.
San Marcos de Arica 1-0 Rangers
Underdogs San Marcos put in a strong performance against Rangers winning its first game since February 3, giving a much needed boost to its hopes of avoiding relegation.
The only goal came 70 minutes in when San Marcos winger Nestor Contreras’ header was manhandled over the line by the unfortunate keeper. It may have only been a few centimeters but it was enough to keep the Arica side’s head above water for a little longer.
San Marcos now have 10 points, putting them one win away from Antofagasta and Huachipato, 14th and 15th place respectively, while Rangers remain cosy in its mid-table obscurity.
Cobreloa 4-1 Cobresal
Bottom of the table landmark Cobresal went into this game as the clear underdogs and it did not disappoint, despite getting off to a promising start.
Jean Paul Pineda put the home side ahead beating the keeper to a cross and heading Cobresal ahead 28 minutes. Even a penalty couldn’t dent the underdogs lead as Cobresal keeper Sebastian Cuerdo saved a penalty from Argentine forward Marcos Sebastián Pol.
With the second half, though, came the inevitable Cobresal comedown. Apparently, still in shock at being in the lead, the home team conceded a spree of goals.
Gastón Lezcano was the first to lay in to the beleaguered bottom tablers, turning a defender before beating the keeper in the 50th minute. Pablo González was the next to heap on the misery with a second goal 15 minutes later. Three minutes later, Sebastián Pol made it 3-1 beating the keeper at close quarters.
Then, in the final minute of normal time, René Lima made it four, beating the keeper from a free kick.
Despite its abysmal point total, Cobresal are at least leading the pack when it comes to one statistic, goals conceded. At the other end of the table, Cobreloa’s win leaves it within three points of O’Higgins and the top-spot.
Ñublense 0-2 Unión La Calera
Maximiliano Bajter got the visitors off to a good start heading a cross past the keeper nine minutes in. Ñublense fought back and had some good chances, but a great shot by João Ortiz in the 29th minute doubled La Calera’s lead and took the wind out of the home team.
After the break Ñublense came out looking dangerous and created some good chances, threatening Alejandro Becerra’s goal on several occasions.
It was not to be though, first Mauricio Gómez then Emanuel Croce were no match for Becerra’s keeping, failing to convert successive penalties.
Sunday’s victory puts La Calera in 6th place, only four points of the heady heights of O’Higgins and the top spot.
Deportes Antofagasta 4-2 Universidad de Chile
Following upsets for Unión Española and Universidad Católica, Sunday’s match with 14th place Antofagasta looked like a surefire win for “La U,” but unfortunately for the visitors, the northerners hadn’t read the script.
Isaac Díaz opened the scoresheet, capitalizing on several shots and some scrappy defending by the home side to fire in a shot from the edge of the area eight minutes in.
Antofagasta hit back, though, as Javier Elizondo got past his marker heading the ball into the far corner in the 28th minute to score his first of four.
Fernando Hurtado kept things on an even plane for Antofagasta, saving a 38th minute penalty from Ramón Fernández.
Soon after the break, Elizondo headed the home team into the lead. Antofagasta continued its strong attacking play, earning a corner in the 56th minute. Herrera supplied Elizondo at the far post and he volleyed in his third goal of the match.
The excitement continued at the other end as Universidad de Chile’s Juan Ignacio Duma scored a spectacular goal with a cross/shot from way out on the right flank saving some face for the visitors.
It wasn’t to be, however, in the final minutes Elizondo made a great performance even better by getting behind the keeper on a long ball and beating the last defender to his fourth goal of the match in the 88th minute.
Colo Colo 2-2 Huachipato
Traditional powerhouses but current champions of mediocrity Colo Colo got off to a promising start Sunday, only to cement its reputation for underperforming by failing to maintain the lead against bottom feeders Huachipato.
The home side began well with a confident finish from Carlos Muñoz 15 minutes in. Gonzalo Fierro kept up momentum with a further strike for “Los Albos” just before the break with a well-taken header.
Things started to go wrong in the last half hour as some terrible Colo Colo defending allowed Braian Rodríguez to tap in a rebound unmarked.
One shocking disregard for the concept of marking later and Huachipato’s Felipe Reynero was able to even the scoreline with a header from inside the five yard box.
The upshot is a much-needed point for Huachipato and an unsurprised sigh from Colo Colo fans who watch on as their once-great club continues languishing in the middle of the table.
