Vasco eye move for Benfica midfielder Pablo Aimar
Vasco da Gama are eyeing up a move for Benfica midfielder Pablo Aimar this summer once the Argentines contract expires with the Portuguese giants.
Aimar, 33, has had a stellar career in European football since leaving River Plate in 2000, firstly with Spanish giants Valencia, where he won two La Liga titles and the Uefa Cup, then with Real Zaragoza before more recently with Benfica where he is an idol to the club’s supporters.
Aimar’s salary may be a stumbling block for Vasco and they are hoping that the club’s kit manufacturer, Penalty, may help out. However, executive director René Simoes is refusing to talk about the transfer in hope of jinxing the deal.
He told Globo Esporte: “I´d rather not talk about it. Earlier this year we lost players because their names had been disclosed ahead of time.”
While Vasco are still suffering from the financial difficulties which have dogged the past few years, the club hierarchy sees the Argentine playmaker as an ideal star to help lift some of the gloom around the club.
The possibility of the transfer has also been helped by the fact that the Vasco director of football Ricardo Gomes used to play for Benfica and is a keen follower of Portuguese football.
