Botafogo crowned Campeonato Carioca champions
Botafogo have been crowned Rio de Janeiro State Championship champions for the 20th time in their history following a 1-0 win against Fluminense.
The match was played at the Raulino de Oliveira stadium in Volta Redonda, and was the Taça Rio (state league second turn) final.
As winners of the first turn as well, Botafogo won the full competition thanks to the second turn win.
The first half was nervous, three players were carded in the first 11 minutes, and both goalkeepers made good saves.
Rafael Marques opened the scoring for Botafogo in the 40th minute, after a shot from Lucas deflected in Dória and Bolívar.
Fluminense had many of the best chances in the second half, but Botafogo´s goalkeeper Jefferson kept having an impressing performance.
A penalty was awarded to Botafogo in the 79th minute, Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf took it and hit the bar, failing to extend his team´s lead.
Seedorf´s wasted penalty did not change the outcome of the game, and Botafogo celebrated their second state league title in the last 5 years.
