Santos considering move for Roque Santa Cruz

Santos are considering the possibility of making an offer for Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz, who is currently playing for Málaga in Spain.

The striker has been offered to Santos and would reportedly be interested in playing along with Neymar.

Roque Santa Cruz is under contract with Manchester City until the end of the season, but is playing for Málaga.

He has been linked to other Brazilian clubs, most notably Botafogo, with whom his agent had talks last months.

The striker´s salary is one of the main obstacles for a move and was a problem during the negotiations with Botafogo.

Roque Santa Cruz´s nationality is also an issue as Santos have three foreign players already - Miralles, Montillo and Rodríguez.

If a fourth foreigner is signed, one of them would have to left out of the matchday squad due to Brazil´s foreign player restriction rules.

André, Giva and Miralles are Santos´ main strikers, but they have failed to impress in a regular basis.

AN ANDALUSIAN SUMMER OF MAGICO

While South Americans have dominated Spanish soccer for decades, much rarer is the successful player from the Northern half of the hemisphere. For every successful Mexican like Hugo Sanchez and Rafa Marquez, a disappointing Omar Bravo returns home with his tail firmly tucked between his legs. For Central Americans, the numbers are even sparser. And that´s why Jorge Alberto "Magico" Gonzalez´s 1983 season at Cadiz was so unforgettable.

Many South American stars seemingly cakewalk to the big European leagues. They effectively intern as teenagers at a big Argentine club like River Plate and, in a few years, a payday of Euros lands in their lap. At the other end of the spectrum, the Central American trail to Europe is far from a beaten path. And that´s especially true for Magico Gonzalez. Nicknamed "mago" (wizard) and the "flor blanca" (white flower) in his native El Salvador, he plied his trade in relative international obscurity at C.D. FAS in El Salvador. Despite guiding the Salvadorean national team to a World Cup berth, he still garnered minimal interest from abroad.

After Espana 82, though, it was a different matter. In the first group stage, El Salvador lost every game and conceded 13 goals. Despite this putrid collective result, Magico Gonzalez put on a show for the ages. Gifted with searing pace off the ball and with it at his feet, he broke more than a few defender´s ankles figuratively if not literally. Nobody could nick the ball off him. And tricks? Foot-skills you ask? The Cruyff turn. The elastico. Step-overs. Magico mastered them all. His elastic legs and quicksilver feet knew no mortal limit like the laws of physics. My favourite move of his was the audacious "autopase" (self-pass). Time after time, Magico simply poked the ball past a defender´s left foot and himself dashed around the defender´s right hand side.

In sum, Magico´s relationship with defenders was a mix of sadistic square dancing and Stockholm Syndrome - defenders wanted out, but couldn´t escape nor did they dare. Even though he hailed from the then-soccer outback of Central America, any scout with eyes could see a future star. After the World Cup, Spanish club Atletico de Madrid offered him a pretty pay package, but Magico settled with Cadiz, even though the Andalusians played in the second division. It was more than a wise choice: it was a match made in heaven.

At Cadiz, a laid back coastal town with a population of about 130,000, Magico was embraced with open arms and patient hearts. Patient hearts, you ask? Yes, you read that right. For all his tricks and skills, Magico´s love of the nightlife sometimes impacted his ability to kick a ball during the light of day. Of course, Cadiz CF, founded in 1935, had only recently tasted topflight football for single-year spells in 1977 and 1981. Thus, the local fans appreciated moments of genius in sporadic fits. There were no capital city sports dailies to moan Magico´s misses (on and off the field).

Magico´s goalscoring touch led Cadiz back into the topflight during his first season. His pace and technical ability was simply too much for second division defenders. However, a look at the roster raised serious questions - could the Andalucians surround Magico with top-tier talent? Would they? The answer was a simple no. Like El Salvador´s shellacking at Espana 82, Cadiz´s 1983-84 La Liga season was a collective failure. They won only 5 games at home and a single game away as visiting team. They managed a single big scalp: beating Atletico de Madrid 3:1 at home.

Nevertheless, Magico Gonzalez lit the nets aflame. He finished with 15 goals, two shy of pichichi-winner Jorge da Silva and three more goals than Mexican Hugo Sanchez (then of Atletico de Madrid). The highlight was his amazing slalom goal against Barcelona. Picking the ball up just behind the halfway line, he simply outran one midfielder, duked and sidestepped one defender, slowed down, pushed off a defender, froze another, and then calmly slotted far post. If you didn´t believe in Magico before that goal, you couldn´t help but be a believer afterwards.

Despite his individual heroics, Cadiz finished six points from safety and were relegated. It was the brightest of flares that shot out from a sinking ship. Magico departed for Valladolid and first-division football, but returned to Cadiz after only a year. Andalucians´ warmth had never left his heart. Yes, his career was marked by collective failures with bursts of individual brilliance, but, in the bigger picture, Gonzalez blazed a trail since followed by Wilson Palacios, Roger Espinoza, and other Central American players now plying their trade in Europe. They can thank him for opening doors, and we can thank him for the unforgettable moments of magico.

Liverpool´s Coutinho grabs second successive player of the month award

Philippe Coutinho has been named Liverpool´s player of the month for April, retaining his title from March.

The young Brazilian has been recognised for a series of superb performances, culminating in his role in the 6-0 rout of Newcastle United.

Upon receiving the award at Melwood, he told Liverpoolfc.com: "I am very happy to receive this award, taking into account that the voting is done by the supporters and that gives me more confidence on the pitch.

"I have to thank my teammates and the supporters for their support and I hope to contribute with my performances. I have been working very hard to be able to adapt very quickly and I think everything is working out very well.

"I thank God and my teammates for making me feel so welcome and for helping me a lot on the pitch. I have to improve a lot and learn much more in our training sessions."

Coutinho has mainly been deployed in a role on the left wing by Brendan Rodgers, though his outstanding performance at Newcastle came from a central position.

He said: "I like to play football, I like to enjoy myself while playing. I play in any position - I have no preference but it all depends on the manager. My duty is to do what he asks from me.

"I am very happy to receive this award, it means a lot to me. I think we have performed well and had some good games. This award is for the whole group."

Pinga to leave Santos at end of contract

Former Torino and Siena midfielder Pinga will leave Santos once his contract expires later this month.

Pinga joined Santos in January, after a spell at Al-Dhafra, from the United Arab Emirates, but he could not live up to the expectations.

This was his second unsuccessful spell in Brazilian football, as he played for Internacional from 2006 to 2007.

Most of his success happened in Italy, where he played for Siena, Torino and Treviso. He also succeeded in the Middle East, becoming one of the best players at Al-Wahda from 2008 to 2010 and also played for Al-Ahli and Al-Dhafra.

He played only four games for Santos this season and was not included in the lists for most of the team´s recent matches.

The club´s director of football Nei Pandolfo talked about the decision, he said: "His contract expires this month and we have no interest [in keeping him]."

Durval could also leave Santos, but Nei Pandolfo has expressed his intention of extending the defender´s contract.

Juan Pablo Pompei: "Me desubiqué"

BUENOS AIRES -- El árbitro Juan Pablo Pompei, admitió que se desubicó al empujar al entrenador de Newell´s Gerardo Martino, y sería sancionado por esa actitud.

En tanto, el técnico reconoció que se "predispone mal" cuando sabe que lo dirigirá ese referí.

"Me desubiqué, me desubiqué, pero también uno tiene pulsaciones tanto o más que los jugadores. Martino protestó del minuto uno hasta el minuto que lo expulsé. Luego me desubiqué yo. Uno tiene sangre en las venas. Los dos reaccionamos mal, el actuó y yo también", dijo Pompei tras el partido que Arsenal ganó 2-0 a Newell´s.

Por su actitud, Pompei podría ser sancionado a raíz de que un juez debe impartir justicia y no sumar agresividad.

Martino reconoció que Pompei lo "echó bien" y que después de la expulsión "le dije algo que justificó" que lo echara.

Asimismo, Martino sorprendió al confesar que tiene mala predisposición cuando lo dirige Pompei.

"Me predispongo mal cuando sé que el árbitro es Pompei. Lo debo confesar. No tengo ningún motivo pero me predispongo mal", reconoció, enigmático Martino.

Pompei, al saber que ésto dijo Martino, consideró que "es un problema de él" y aseguró no tener "nada" en contra del entrenador.

"Tema terminado. Ya habrá revancha y nos volveremos a cruzar y nos pediremos disculpas, o no", cerró Pompei.

Riquelme intensifica su recuperación

BUENOS AIRES -- El capitán y símbolo de Boca, Juan Román Riquelme, se entrenó con mayor intensidad en la búsqueda de superar un desgarro, aunque aún no tocó la pelota, y su evolución es una buena noticia con miras al partido de la semana próxima por la Copa Libertadores.

En ese contexto, el crack xeneize comenzó su rutina con tareas diferenciadas y luego se unió al grupo de aquellos futbolistas que no actuaron el domingo último en el empate con River Plate (1-1) en el superclásico, y realizó piques cortos y largos. También saltó conos, en una señal clara de la evolución de su lesión.

Es muy probable que Riquelme sea titular el miércoles próximo ante el Timao en el partido desquite de los octavos de final de la Libertadores, luego de haberse impuesto por 1 a 0 en La Bombonera la semana pasada.

En tanto, el DT Carlos Bianchi dirigió un ensayo de fútbol en espacios reducidos en los que utilizó a varios de los futbolistas que estarán el sábado ante San Lorenzo, en el Nuevo Gasómetro, por la fecha 13 del torneo Final.

En ese contexto, Bianchi pensaba utilizar el equipo que enfrentará al Ciclón el miércoles contra River en el cruce de la división Reserva que no se jugó el pasado fin de semana, pero finalmente no lo hará y asumirá el compromiso con mayoría de elementos juveniles.

Respecto de la formación que enfrentará a San Lorenzo, si bien aún es prematuro, una probable equipo sería con Oscar Ustari; Emiliano Albín, Claudio Pérez, Lisandro Magallán y Nahuel Zárate; Guillermo "Pol" Fernández, Gonzalo Escalante, Nicolás Colazo; Leandro Paredes; Sebastián Palacios y Lucas Viatri.

De esos jugadores, únicamente el tucumano Palacios, Viatri, el Chiqui Pérez y el arquero Ustari estarán mañana a las 15.30 en el partido de Reserva ante River a jugarse en Casa Amarilla.

Es decir que la formación boquense será con Ustari; Jonathan Castillo, Claudio Pérez, Dino Castagno y Agustín García Basso; Francesco Celeste, Gabriel Ferreyra, Nicolás González; Viatri; Palacios y Juan Imbert.

Respecto de los lesionados, siguen adelante con sus tareas diferenciadas el uruguayo Ribair Rodríguez y el tucumano Franco Sosa, ambos desgarrados, y es probable que la semana próxima se sumen al plantel.

En tanto, Pablo Ledesma, desgarrado en el superclásico, tiene para unos 21 días de recuperación, mientras que el Burrito Diego Rivero, con un problema cardíaco, estuvo en la práctica y dialogó con Bianchi, aunque aún no se sabe cuándo se sumará al grupo.

Federico Bravo: "Fuimos superiores"

BUENOS AIRES -- El juvenil volante central de Boca Juniors, Federico Bravo, habló por ESPN Radio en Rivadavia.

"Mentiría si dijera que estamos felices. Queríamos ganar y creo que fuimos un poco superiores, tuvimos mejor actitud que River".

"Admito que no fue un buen partido. Se dio un encuentro friccionado y con pelotazos, estaba complicado jugar por abajo. Es un partido con un marco distinto a cualquiera, los dos equipos nos preocupamos más por llegar rápido al arco rival y no pensábamos en armar el juego. Nosotros sabemos que tenemos que mejorar futbolísticamente, sin dudas".

"Sobre el final, la gente nos empujó muchísimo. También, estamos contentos porque muchos chicos tuvimos la posibilidad de jugar y le estamos eternamente agradecidos a Carlos por eso. Es algo muy positivo para el club de cara al futuro. Y siempre es fundamental el apoyo de los más grandes, nos brindaron toda su confianza para jugar tranquilos".

"River pudo haber hecho más goles en el primer tiempo, nos agarró con un gol de entrada y nos desesperamos. Pero en el segundo tiempo fuimos superiores".

"El gol de Lanzini fue una jugada muy rápida, aunque no hablamos nada de eso en el entretiempo a modo de reproche".

"Creo que Delfino estuvo bien, quizás con algún error esporádico, pero manejó bien los tiempos. No creo que haya influído en el resultado".

"No sé por qué lo expulsaron a Ramón Díaz, yo estaba metido en el partido con mis compañeros y no escuché. Pero sin dudas le vino bien a River para enfriar el encuentro y eso Ramón, con su experiencia, lo manejó muy bien. Aunque no creo que lo haya hecho a propósito".

"A los hinchas les agradecemos todo el apoyo. El uso de las bengalas y los fuegos artificiales puede que no sea la forma correcta de manifestarlo, pero nos ayudan un montón dentro de la cancha. Siempre se hace sentir contra cualquier rival y me siento orgulloso de tener esa hinchada".

"Preocupan las lesiones, no estamos teniendo suerte. Es una mala racha, pero existen para cortarse. Es cierto que son muchas lesiones musculares, pero no coincido cuando se cuestiona el trabajo de los preparadores físicos ya que estamos muy conformes con ellos. Probablemente tenga que ver los nervios y las tensiones, pero insisto que es mucha mala suerte".

"La Copa es el objetivo principal que tenemos. Para los más chicos es un honor jugarla teniendo en cuenta lo que significa Boca en ese torneo".

Francescoli: "Todos fuimos a la B"

BUENOS AIRES -- Uno de los máximos ídolos de River Enzo Francescoli contradijo al entrenador del club, Ramón Díaz, y dijo que "los hinchas también se fueron a la B".
"Todos somos hinchas de River y todos estuvimos en la B", le comentó Francescoli un diario deportivo.

Las declaraciones de Francescoli están relacionadas con el gesto que realizó el domingo Ramón Díaz, quien le respondió a los hinchas de Boca que él no se fue a la ´B´, en relación al descenso de River a la primera B Nacional.

Además Francescoli subió la apuesta al declarar que "después de haber estado más de diez años en el club, prefiero irme a la B en River que haber estado en otro club".
