Is Botafogo’s title winning team set to be broken up? – report
The team that led Botafogo to the Carioca championship is set to be broken up, according to reports in Brazil.
Coach Oswaldo de Oliveira’s young team has improved beyond belief in the past year, culminating in the victory over Fluminense last week to clinch the Rio de Janeiro state championship.
However, their good performances have not gone unnoticed and there are rumours that clubs are eyeing up a number of their star performers, with Fellype Gabriel, Gabriel, Dória and Nicolás Lodeiro all being linked with moves abroad.
Lancenet are reporting that Fellype Gabriel, 27, who only joined Botafogo last year after a spell in Japan, could once again move East with a number of teams in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates after his services.
Defensive midfielder Gabriel, 20, has only just broke into the first team but has quickly established himself and, as well as catching the eye of national team coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, is being watched by a number of European clubs.
The report also reveals that both Dória, who nearly joined Juventus last year, and former Ajax midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro are being followed by clubs in Europe.
While Botafogo would love to keep this current squad together so to mount a serious Brasileirão challenge, the clubs finances are in such a mess that they may be forced to cash in on their prized assets.
