Corinthians set to sign Chilean midfielder Claudio Maldonado

Corinthians are close to announcing the signing of experienced Chilean midfielder Claudio Maldonado.

The Chilean player played for Flamengo from 2009 to 2012 and has been regaining his fitness at Corinthians since January, when he underwent a knee surgery.

Maldonado has attracted Corinthians´ interest due to the need of having a player to replace Ralf when he is not available.

He has vast experience, having played 44 times for the Chilean national team, and winning several titles in Chilean and Brazilian football.

Corinthians´ director of football Roberto de Andrade talked about the negotiations, he told ESPN Brasil: "We are talking, it´s very advanced, but let´s wait until next week to finalize it. Maybe it will work out."

Corinthians face Boca this week for the Round of 16 of Copa Libertadores, and Santos next weekend for the second leg of the São Paulo State Championship final.

Bernard´s mother indicates her son could be set to join Dortmund

Bernard´s mother Dona Nélia commented before the state league final between Atlético Mineiro and Cruzeiro that the winger might be close to joining a German team.

Atlético Mineiro won the game 3-0 and are now close to winning the Minas Gerais State League title.

The Galo are also in the quarter-finals of Copa Libertadores, which is Atlético Mineiro´s main competition this semester.

Am eventual transfer of Bernard is expected to happen only after the competition is over in August, unless Atlético Mineiro are eliminated in an early round.

His mother Dona Nélia suggested that the move might be close to happening, she told reporters: "We will wait for a definition, but if he is to live in Germany, then my husband will go with him first, and I will join them later."

Corinthians 2 1 Santos: Advantage Timão after first leg of Paulistão final

Corinthians hold the advantage in the final of the Paulista championship after beating rivals Santos 2-1 at Pacaembu on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Paulinho and Paulo André were enough to give Tite’s team a valuable first leg lead, with Durval getting a goal back for Santos with less than 10 minutes remaining.

There was a full house at Pacaembu for this highly anticipated final and, in the blazing sun, the home team got off to a great start when a free kick from the right hand side from Romarinho fell into the path of midfielder Danilo. The veteran managed to prod the ball into the path of Paulinho, for him to drive past Rafael in the Santos goal.

Corinthians were by far the better side during the first half and managed to contain Santos superstar Neymar, who cut an isolated figure for Muricy Ramalho’s team.

The game stayed at 1-0 until just 15 minutes to go when the Timão took advantage of some shocking Santos defending to grab their second.

A corner was swung in from the left and, despite having plenty of chances to clear the ball, the Santos defence could only clear to the edge of the box, where it fell to André who smashed it into the roof of the net.

Santos got a goal back with nine minutes left when Durval headed in Felipe Anderson’s free-kick from the right to give them a lifeline going into the second leg.

Independiente: Brindisi valoró el 0-0

BUENOS AIRES -- El técnico de Independiente, Miguel Angel Brindisi, valoró el punto conseguido ante Lanús como visitante "por la jerarquía del rival" y consideró un mérito que el adversario, uno de los candidatos al título, no le haya marcado goles.

"Antes del partido no me conformaba con un punto, pero teniendo en cuenta el desarrollo del juego y la jerarquía del rival, creo que fue bueno haber sumado sin que nos convirtieran goles", sostuvo Brindisi tras la igualdad a cero en el estadio del Granate.

Reconoció que su equipo no jugó "tan bien como contra Tigre" pero resaltó el orden "incluso después de la expulsión" de Cristian Tula, a los 31 minutos del segundo tiempo.

"En ningún momento pasamos zozobra. Es más, en un partido con pocas situaciones, tuvimos la más clara nosotros sobre el final en los pies de (Adrián) Fernández". agregó.

Brindisi no habla de la permanencia y menos de cómo encontrará a Independiente en el final del torneo.

"Mi norte es el próximo partido y me alegra sabe que el equipo va mejorando y que para el que viene vamos a contar con (Fabián) Vargas", celebró Brindisi.

VUELVE UNO Y FALTAN DOS

Independiente se jugará una patriada el domingo próximo ante San Martín de San Juan en Avellaneda, para el cual tendrá el regreso del volante colombiano Fabián Vargas, pero sufrirá dos bajas importantes.

Es que Independiente no podrá contar con el zaguero Cristian Tula, expulsado ante Lanús, ni con Federico Mancuello, quien sumó su quinta tarjeta amarilla.

Caruso disparó contra sus jugadores

SAN JUAN -- El director técnico de Argentinos Juniors, Ricardo Caruso Lombardi, fue muy duro este domingo con sus jugadores luego de la caída frente a San Martín de San Juan al considerar que "no se dan cuenta de lo que se están jugando".

"Fuimos un desastre. Así no se puede jugar. La diferencia de los seis puntos hay que defenderla a muerte, pero hay que hacerlo de otra manera. Me parece que mis jugadores no se dan cuenta de lo que se están jugando", disparó Caruso Lmbardi en rueda de prensa tras la derrota, que lo complica aún más en la pelea por escaparle al descenso.

Y luego precisó: "El rival de Argentinos somos nosotros, fuimos un desastre, no vinimos a Santa Fe. ¿Qué vamos a esperar? ¿Que pierdan los demás? Hoy fuimos una vergüenza".

Previamente, cuando todavía no había abandonado el campo de juego, el entrenador del equipo de La Paternal había dejado una frase que vislumbraba disconformismo.

"No, bastante tengo mirando el equipo mío. Con eso es suficiente", respondió Caruso cuando el periodista del programa Fútbol para Todos le preguntó si iba a ver el partido de Quilmes, que se juega también la permanencia, ante Colón.

En tres partidos, Independiente le descontó a Argentinos siete puntos y ahora está a seis, en la tabla de promedios.

Como de costumbre, Caruso se quejó del resultado al afirmar que "no fue una derrota justa".

"Nos agarró mal en el primer gol" dijo y volvió a inyectar enigmas en una elíptica queja al árbitro Carlos Maglio: "A veces pasan cosas...la expulsión (de Fabio Vázquez) condicionó".

Barros Schelotto: "Delfino no incidió"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Lanús, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, aseguró que el árbitro Germán Delfino "no incidió en el juego" ante Independiente, a pesar de haberlo expulsado en el primer tiempo, y valoró la actitud de sus dirigidos en la igualdad sin goles.

"Le dije al línea que abra los ojos porque Fernández (Adrián) había bajado la pelota con la mano. Ahí lo llamó a Delfino y por eso me echaron. Creo que Delfino no incidió en el juego. Interpretó que la roja de Pizarro era para roja", comentó el director técnico en conferencia de prensa.

En cuanto al desempeño de su equipo, Guillermo analizó: "Nunca fuimos superados por Independiente, estuvimos bien defensivamente y se notó el hombre de menos en la ofensiva porque Guido (Pizarro) es un hombre importante para nosotros".

Y agregó: "Me voy tranquilo por la actitud que tuvo siempre el equipo, siempre estuvimos bien parados y nos faltó un poco más en los últimos minutos, pero sentimos el desgaste que tuvimos".

Además, sobre la pelea en el campeonato, Barros Schelotto admitió que "Newell´s, Lanús y River tienen ventaja sobre el resto" y que estarán en la lucha hasta el final.

"Tenemos que ir a ganar a la cancha de Tigre, de acá hasta el final vamos a estar primeros, segundos o terceros. No nos podemos caer y hay que tener fortaleza para seguir prendidos", expresó.

GOLTZ SÍ CUESTIONÓ AL JUEZ

Paolo Goltz, defensor de Lanús, criticó el arbitraje de Germán Delfino durante el partido que el Granate igualó 0-0 contra Independiente por el Torneo Final.

"No solamente nos perjudicó en esa jugada (refiriéndose a la expulsión de Guido Pizarro), sino que en cada jugada dividida cobró en contra nuestra", señaló Goltz.

El jugador de Lanús expresó que esas decisiones de Delfino "nos sacó a todos (los jugadores)", pero reconoció que contra las decisiones de los árbitros "no se puede hacer nada".

Cuando se le pidió su opinión sobre el trabajo de su equipo, Goltz puntualizó que "quizá lo que más rescato es la actitud que tuvimos, ya que jugamos gran parte del encuentro con un hombre menos. Quedamos un paso detrás de Newell´s (el líder del torneo), pero vamos a seguir luchando para recuperar la punta".

Flamengo dismiss Ferdinand and César reports

Flamengo have rubbished reports linking them with a move for Manchester United´s Rio Ferdinand and QPR´s Júlio César.

The England centre-back is out of contract this summer and reports linked the Manchester United star with a move to Brazil at the end of the season.

But Flamengo director of football Paulo Pelaipe has dismissed any notions of an approach for the defender.

"I haven´t talked to anybody about it, and the board haven´t told me anything on the subject."

Vice-president Wallim Vasconcellos also added: "There is nothing about Rio Ferdinand."

Vasconcellos also made great pains to distance the club from a move for Seleção star Júlio César who is set to leave QPR this summer.

"Julio Cesar is a great goalkeeper and could play for any team, but he is not one of our concerns right now."
