Tijuana is on to the quarterfinals

http://www.youtube.com/w…D0X7x09t5Vs

Tijuana qualified on Tuesday to the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores after beating Palmeiras 2-1 at the Pacaembu stadium in Sao Paulo.

Attacker Duvier Riascos opened the scoring in the first half (26) and Arce doubled the lead (2-0) shortly after the break (51).

However Souza pulled one back from the spot for Palmeiras in the 61st minute.

The first-leg match, held May 1 at Caliente stadium in Tijuana, ended in a goalless draw.

Tijuana will play Atlético Mineiro on May 22 in the quarterfinals. Atlético booked their place last week after thrashing Sao Paulo.

Palmeiras, currently in the second division in Brazil and focusing on this tournament, started off the match with a lot of pressure.

Their first chance came in the 24th minute when Ayrton hit the crossbar on his free kick and Marcelo Oliveira put the rebound wide.

Tijuana´s game plan looked to be to kick Palmeiras around the field as they accumulated seven yellow cards with Pablo Aquilar getting two of those and sent off. Palmeiras were shown five yellows.

Palmeiras coach Gilson Kleina shored-up the attack by inserting Maikon Leite and Souza, who scored his first Copa Lib goal from the spot. Aguilar handled the ball in the box which gave Souza his chance to score.

Palmeiras tried to get two more goals which would put them into the next round by constantly attacking but came up short as they ran out of time.

This is the first Copa Libertadores that Tijuana has played in.

Vélez and Newell´s game to determine Argentinian representative for the quarterfinals of the Libertadores

The team coached by Ricardo Gareca managed to win in Rosario and will stamp its ticket to the next round with a victory or a tie, but they cannot get overconfident against a Newell´s team that must win by two goals, or by one goal if they manage to score two or more in the game, in which they are the viistors in Liniers.

"Every game in the Cup is more important, because now in the local tournament, we are a non-factor. We will bring our ´A´ game to play against Vélez, and if we pass to the next round, the next game will be the most important. But we aren´t going to forget about the championship", warned Martino, who will leave Newell´s at the end of the season.

For its part, Vélez reserved its starting squad with the objective of maintaining the advantage in the game. It is expected that star midfielder Fernando Gago will return to play after recuperating from his injury.

"We are going to defend the result of the game that we won in Rosario, but we will do it with the Vélez philosophy, which is going out to attack and win", said midfielder Francisco Cerro.

The game will be played fom 7:15 p.m. local time (22H15 GMT) in José Amalfitani stadium and will be officiated by Argentinian Néstor Pitana, who will be helped by Juan Belatti and Gustavo Rossi.

Corinthians, out for revenge, hosts Boca in Libertadores competition

Corinthians will come to the game ready to play this Wednesday, motivated by their 2-1 victory this weekend over Santos, in the first game of a two game series. They are playing Santos as part of the ´campeonato paulista´ - a Brazilian tournament - and they are close to winning the title.

But they will also be slightly worried for the missed opportunities on goal that could have added to their margin of difference agianst Santos. In this game against Boca Juniors - six time Libertadores champions - it will be necessary to take advantage of those opportunities to punch their ticket to the next round of competition.

Against Santos "we lacked a little precision. With how the team played, we were close to scoring more points", recognized the coach of Corinthians, Tite.

Boca Juniors won in the first game against Corinthians, beating them in La Bombonera in Buenos Aires 1-0. The goal was scored by Nicolás Blandi (59).

For Boca, who are passing through historically bad times in the Argentinian tournament, this game also will present the opportunity for revenge. It was Corinthians who beat Boca last year to win their first Libertadores championship, and Boca would like to replace that loss in their memory with a victory now.

With the result of the game in Argentina, Boca only needs to tie to keep going, or to lose by no more than one goal if they score a goal as visitor. Corinthians, on the other hand, needs to win by two goals to pass to the next round, or by 1-0 if the game reaches penalty kicks.

The game will be played en Pacaembú stadium in Sao Paulo at 10:00 p.m. local time (01H00 GMT Thursday). It will be refereed by Paraguayan Carlos Amarilla, with help from his countrymen Rodney Aquino and Carlos Cáceres.

Seleção boss Scolari backs Neymar to rediscover form

Seleção boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has defended the inclusion of Neymar in his Confederations Cup squad over criticism of the player´s recent form.

Critics have pinpointed Neymar´s disappointing form for Santos as a reason for dropping the player from the squad but Scolari has dismissed such calls.

"Neymar has been playing well," Scolari told reporters. "I understand some people are going to disagree. He´s playing very well from our point of view. It´s what we expect.

"Many times we´re criticised for picking A, B or C. I was criticised several times for having Costinha on my team when I was in Portugal.

"Costinha gave me everything I needed in a defensive midfielder, and he wasn´t unanimous at his own club either. That´s the criteria I adopt here, how important a player can be for the team."

Scolari also revealed that there will be further opportunities for Ronaldinho and Kaká should they impress for their clubs.

"History is not over for the veterans. This list is for the Confederations Cup only. We have a project to watch other players who might add more to our group to the World Cup.

"After the CC, we´ll be going to Europe, to places like Russia, Ukraine, England, to watch players from there. We´ll see how this ones go and who else can add more to us.

"To everyone who was left out: play, show us your football, prove you can add to the squad. They could be planting a little seed for the future."

Bayern deny interest in Neymar

Bayern Munich has denied any interest in signing Santos star Neymar, despite rumors in Brazilian press recently.

Former Santos official Vicente Cascione claimed that a deal is already in place, and that Neymar will join the German club in August, he added that this is a fact nobody can deny.

The German club´s official spokesperson Markus Horwick talked about the rumors, he said: "Those are not true in any way, they are absurd, there is nothing true about them."

Neymar has also been strongly linked to Barcelona and Real Madrid although Santos keep denying that any offer has been made.

Santos are, however, believed to want around 50 million Euros for the percentage of the young star´s rights the club own.

Neymar´s contract with Santos expires after the 2014 World Cup and attemtps to extend it have failed so far.

Man City target Fernandinho calls on Shakhtar to lower valuation

Shakhtar´s Fernandinho claims his move to Premier League giants Manchester City is being threatened by the club´s high valuation of the player.

The Brazilian has called on the Ukraine club to lower his value so that he can join the Citizens, who are reportedly put off by his price.

Fernandinho currently has a £40.5m release clause in his contract according to reports and the player believes the club has promised to compromise should a top club come calling.

"The day I signed, the club´s director guaranteed me that was normal with his players, and that in a transfer, we could negotiate and reach an agreement on the price," said Fernandinho.

"I trusted them, and I didn´t think about the consequences it would bring me in the future. My dream is being threatened because of the high valuation."

The midfielder has recently turned down an offer of a new contract and is adamant he wants to leave the club this summer.

Ex-Liverpool boss Roy Evans: Coutinho can emulate Jan Molby

Former Liverpool boss Roy Evans belieces that Philippe Coutinho is comparable to Anfield legend Jan Molby.

Evans says the Brazilian has the same qualities as the former Danish midfielder and could become a huge asset for the Reds.

"He´s got the same type of vision as Jan," Evans told LFC TV after Coutinho set up two of Daniel Sturridge´s goals against Fulham on Sunday.

"Jan might tell you he could see a bit more than that, but to be fair he does have that kind of vision.

"Steven Gerrard has had that vision over all these years - especially with the longer balls.

"Coutinho has got that little bit of cuteness about him that means if you make the run, you´ve got a 90 per cent chance he´s going to stick it in the right place for you.

"This guy knows how to pass it. I´m not trying to say or put too much on him just yet because he´s still a young lad of 20, but he´s got class. That gives you great confidence to go and make the runs.

"Coutinho is benefitting everyone - not just Sturridge. Jordan Henderson is making runs into the box and he´s finding him too."
