Fabrizio Romano shares what Chelsea are looking for in a new goalkeeper

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, but they want a goalkeeper “who’s strength lies in his distribution” according to Fabrizio Romano.

Despite signing both Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic last summer on long term deals, it was reported on Friday that the club were looking to sign a new goalkeeper to compete with Sanchez.

New boss Enzo Maresca is set to assess Sanchez and Petrovic in pre-season but reports have indicated the Spaniard is set to start the season as first choice.
Romano says Chelsea want a goalkeeper with good distribution

Chelsea wanting a new goalkeeper doesn’t come as a surprise and the club were strongly linked with several names earlier this summer.

What has come as a surprise is the news that the future of Petrovic is uncertain with the Blues reportedly offering the 24-year-old to Serie A outfit Genoa.

Petrovic joined last summer from MLS outfit New England Revolution and impressed after replacing the injured Sanchez, and even kept his place in the team when the Spaniard returned to fitness.

Sanchez struggled last season and made a number of errors, whilst there was a clear nervousness in the defence when he was on the ball, however Romano has reported he’s set to start the season as number one.

He took to X.com and said:

“Chelsea are considering to bring in new goalkeeper to compete with Robert Sanchez, who’s starting the season as first GK. Despite early links with Mamardashvili, Chelsea are keen on GK who’s strength lies in his distribution.”

Santos to return to Strasbourg

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are happy for Santos to have a reunion with Le Racing for the upcoming season.

A deal is already said to have been struck between the relevant parties and will be completed when Chelsea have played a number of friendlies on a pre-season tour of the United States.

Romano adds that Borussia Dortmund had expressed an interest in acquiring the 20-year-old´s services, yet Chelsea officials preferred Santos to move to Strasbourg due to their pending managerial appointment.

Former Hull City boss Liam Rosenior will be named as the successor to Patrick Vieira in due course, with discussions having already been held with Santos.

The style of play that will be implemented by the Englishman is allegedly an important factor behind Santos moving to Strasbourg.

LENS SET TO SIGN CHELSEA’S WANTAWAY MALANG SARR

Sarr will sign a two-year deal with the Sang et Or, and is expected to pass his medical visit this Monday. The Artois side have managed to quickly find an agreement on personal terms with the centre back, who is looking for a new challenge where he could have more game time, as he didn’t play a single minute with the first team last season. No transfer fee has been indicated by the French outlet, which states that the deal could be completed in the next few days.

The question of Conor Gallagher’s future took a backseat to our deputy captain’s involvement at Euro 2024 over the past month, but now that the tournament is over, we can probably start expecting a bit more clarity around the situation soon.

That clarity unfortunately is still leaning towards his exit, with no talk whatsoever of a new contract. Instead, we have Atlético Madrid making a renewed push for his signature.

Atléti already tried last month, but a €20m lowball was laughed off as we’re reportedly looking for something closer to €50m. Whether the two teams can close that gap is far from a given at this point.

That said, Gallagher would surely be a great fit for Diego Simeone’s style of football. And according to Diario AS, “Gallagher wants to come and that he will do everything in his power to end up in Madrid”. For their part, Atléti consider the 24-year-old as a “main target” for this summer, and have had Kieran Trippier whisper sweet nothings abou Atléti in his ears over the course the Euros as well.

Gallagher has just one year left on his Chelsea contract, so the one thing we cannot do is just ignore the situation.

Official: Chelsea sign Caleb Wiley from Atlanta United

Just before heading out to the US for our preseason tour, Chelsea have announced the signing of USA international Caleb Wiley. The 19-year-old will not be joining the tour however as he’s with the under-23 US Men’s National Team who are about to begin their Olympic tournament at the Paris Games.

Whether Wiley joins Chelsea afterwards remains to be seen, though rumors have indicated that the young left back will be heading on loan to RC Strasbourg instead. Strasbourg were heavily linked with him throughout the summer, but for whatever reason, BlueCo have decided to conduct this transfer via Chelsea rather than the Ligue 1 side directly. The transfer fee is only around €10m, reportedly, so it’s not a huge hit to our books, but Wiley now becomes yet another player in an already bloated squad.

That said, the youngster has plenty of senior professional experience in MLS already at such a young age, and has promise to match as well.
