Sources say Chelsea regard the €60million [£51.7m] fee agreed with Real Madrid, including €5m in add-ons, as a good sum for a left-back who is turning 28 next month and was keen to move back to Spain. Coming to an agreement for Marc Cucurella now means the sale can be put on the financial accounts for the year ending June 30, 2026, which is no bad thing for the books.
Jorrel Hato is being earmarked to take Cucurella’s position to the left of him in the team. Another measure of Hato’s rapid progress is that he is already deemed to be one of Chelsea’s ‘untouchables’. The club are not interested in selling, but their valuation of the defender, who is part of the Netherlands World Cup squad, has already grown way beyond what they paid Ajax for him last August. Another earmarked as a possible candidate for the future is U-21s defender Landon Emenalo, although there is recognition at Chelsea that he still needs more development.
While Chelsea have not confirmed it, sources in France have said that Valentin Barco is going to join from Strasbourg. He certainly fits the description of what they require because the Argentina international can operate as a left-back, a wing-back and in midfield as a No 6 or No 8.
Chelsea insiders say Xabi Alonso and the 5 sporting directors are aligned with their vision when it comes to their plans this summer. The Blues want to add a starting-level centre-back to their ranks - someone to partner Levi Colwill, who remains front and centre of the club´s long-term plans.
Chelsea´s ownership group are preparing to back Xabi Alonso like they have not done with any of his predecessors. Multiple names have been discussed internally, though sources close to Chelsea are keeping their cards close to their chest - a clear change from recent windows.
Chelsea want to add a central midfielder between now and the end of the transfer window; Adam Wharton is a long-term target but the Crystal Palace midfielder is set to cost around the £100million-mark. Chelsea are also hoping to add a left-sided attacker in the coming months. Morgan Rogers is someone highly rated by senior figures within the club but the Aston Villa and England star looks more likely to move to Arsenal at the moment.
