Hey guys. I just thought I’d throw out a teaser regarding the discovery of Inter phone calls. Remember that Moggi and Bergamo were accused of handpicking referees in Serie A but were found not guilty after it was proven that referees were assigned to matches by random draw in the presence of officials and media? Well the Coppa Italia is a bit different. For the Coppa referees are simply selected by the designers at will.

Why do we care?

On the 10th of January 2005 at 12:20 referee designer Bergamo and Massimo Moratti discussed the prospect of having referee Gabriele officiate the upcoming Coppa Italia match between Bologna-Inter on the 13th of January. The game would end 3-1 for Inter and Inter would go on to win the Coppa Italia. Some may recall the immense controversies regarding that tournament (i.e. handball goals allowed to stand in the Inter-Cagliari semifinal etc). This revelation now casts a major shadow over the tournament.

------------------------------------------------------------------

La Stampa conducted a brief interview with Moggi’s lawyer, Maurilio Prioreschi today. While the tapes will be presented in courts April 13th, he sheds a bit of light on what may or may not be in there. Translated interview after the jump.

Lawyer Maurilio Prioreschi, you defend Luciano Moggi in the Calciopoli trials in Napoli: Why have you only recently found the telephone calls between Bergamo, Moratti, and Facchetti?
«It’s a question I’ve asked myself, together with another: Why were they not transcribed? Why were they hidden? It’s curious.».

How did you come about finding them?
«Calciopoli consists, globally, of 171,000 intercepted phone calls. We checked Bergamo’s usage, the relative traffic arriving and outgoing, hence the discovery. But this isn’t really a discovery, but a confirmation. At the time, to call the referee designator was lawful, and everyone did it. I repeat: Everyone.».

The difference is in the contents however, don’t you think?
«I don’t exclude that that they are totally innocent, the recordings that were made of Moggi and Bergamo, respective to those that we believe we’ve found».

Where are you at in the tapings?
«Of the 171,000 in total, we’ve listened to about 30,000. And some important ones have already emerged».

Even those of Moratti and Facchetti, then?
«Yes, also from other Inter directors».

Moratti has suggested that it wasn’t he who made the call, but the referee designators.
«That changes little, I would say.».

One of the most “endearing” was Cagliari’s president, Cellino.
«Exactly».

Galliani?
«There are discussions between him and Pairetto, the other referee designator.».

Between Gallani and Bergamo?
«Didn’t appear. The references of the then League President (Gallani) were with Pairetto.».

Can one listen to the conversations?
«In principle, yes, and some we have already listened to. They are interesting….the contents will be divulged ind ue time. Perhaps at the next hearing on April 13th.».

Why “in principle?”
«Because some of them we have not been able to open.».

In summary?
«They [the referee designators] spoke on the phone with everyone, but for Moggi, the connection became a morbid fascination for others, it was a distraction or maybe a priveleged connection. I repeat: In the 2004-2005 season, you could have called Bergamo and Pairetto. It remains a mystery why the discussions between Bergamo, Moratti, and Facchetti were not taken into consideration by Auricchio.».

As to not have aroused suspension, perhaps.
«The clarity and completeness, in these cases, would have contributed a lot at the start to have removed slander and the “dark shadows.” Inter received a Scudetto from Juventus from this “diversity” of evidence.».

“Something will be missed,” rationalized the prosecuter Narducci.
«Only something?».

There has always been swirling reports of Inter’s involvement in Calciopoli, be it that they were guilty themselves, or that they had been actively working to create the whole thing. Most Juve directors accepted their punishment without appeal, simply because they wanted to get the whole thing over with and move on. Lucky for us, Luciano Moggi, in true “Old Triade” style refused to accept his punishment, and has been fighting his ban and conviction through the courts the last few years. A few weeks ago, you may remember his lawyers found evidence of tape recordings involving Juventus that had gone missing; key prosecution witness Attilio Auricchio, a good friend of anti-Juventino Franco Baldini, responded that “he couldn’t remember.” Auricchio, if you didn’t know, is an ex-policeman in charge of handling the wiretaps, who has an outstanding charge for tampering with a mayoral election evidence in Rome. Many of the wiretaps Auricchio “lost” had been used to convict Juventus.

Auricchio has stated the same thing today, in response to a massive change in the case. Moggi’s defense team has found evidence of many phone calls between Inter’s management and the referee designator. For those who don’t know, essentially Calciopoli was charges of a lot of wrongdoing, but at the end, the only thing Juventus were convicted and relegated for was, basically, too much contact with the referee designator, Bergamo. Moggi was accused of having too personal of a relationship with Paolo Bergamo, and exclusively so. There were no convictions of Moggi manipulating the transfer market, there were no convictions that Juventus had actually fixed or altered the result of any game. (Lazio and Fiorentina were busted for match fixing)

Today, Moggi’s lawyers uncovered some bombshell evidence. Phone recordings, for “some” reason TIM and the police investigating never submitted to the sports tribunal. The first is a conversation between Moratti, Facchetti, and the referee designator, Bergamo, as well as the secretary of the Italian Referees Association, Maria Grazia Fazi. In the recording, they speak about a dinner the four had the night before an Inter 2-0 win over Livorno (which was back then, a team challenging for UEFA Cup) that was riddled with refereeing controversy. In addition, Milan manager Adriano Gallani who avoided Milan’s relegation by claiming it was low level management (Meani) speaking with referees, is recorded on tape with the other referee designator, Pierluigi Pairetto. Information about the tapes are not completely available yet, but one conversation Milan had stated that referee designator Paolo Bergamno stated, “I just got off the phone with Moratti and he wants to have dinner with me and Facchetti about the referee situation.” This is was what started the investigation into Inter’s relationship with the referees.

Theses wiretaps, which will come out more fully in the future, cast four huge doubts over the Calciopoli case:
i. Moggi was convicted of having an exclusively close relationship with the referee designators. Obviously, the other big teams had a very close relationship with Bergamo as well. (Pairetto and Bergamo always maintained they were in contact with other team managers as well. They claimed everyone was in contact, thus it was impossible for them to be favoring one team or another, as they couldn’t favor everyone.)
ii. The missing Moggi tapes, used to convict Juventus become even more important. Where are they, and why have they been lost?
iii. Moratti and Facchetti claimed they never spoke with the referee designators, obviously they completely lied about it.
iv. If TIM and the police never handed these tapes over, what other tapes are there out there? Why were only the Meani and Moggi tapes introduced?

Lastly, these aren’t from Tuttosport, this report is from a credible source, La Stampa. Knowing our management, they won’t pursue anything, but I think I speak for all Juventini when I say FORZA MOGGI, keep digging!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Bergamo: "President, I talked with Facchetti to confirm this climate of cordiality which of course is something that you and I know, however, the group appreciated the work that we did with Gabriele and Palanca, and then I thought to bring them back for the Coppa Italia, one for the Inter game and the other for Milan"..

Moratti: "Okay ..."

Bergamo: "We wanted to give them a good image..."

Moratti:´´Sure, sure ...".

Bergamo: "Facchetti said yes, yes I agree ...".

Moratti: "Okay, I´ll go talk to him on Wednesday before the game ..."

Bergamo: "This will please him ...".

Moratti: "I´ll go say hi ...".

Bergamo: "Since there is no draw I sent you Gabriele accompanied by 2 very good assistants ..."

Moratti: "No, no, Gabriele has always been a good referee, regular, I never had any complaints ..."

Bergamo: "A greeting will fill him with joy ..."

Moratti: "Thank you, I will be there on Wednesday if needed, I´m going to meet him before the game ...".

Secondo me sono tutti innocenti”
