The most baffling case of all to me is the club’s refusal to sign Jan Vertonghen. A tall, left-footed defender who could play at either center-back or left-back and was equally excellent going forwards, Vertonghen was the perfect Abidal replacement. The Belgian captained Ajax in the 2011-12 season and was named the Dutch player of the year, but Ajax are a selling club and it was decided early in the summer Vertonghen would be leaving. Here’s where it got crazy: manager Frank de Boer explicitly offered him to Barcelona. But the Catalans must not have been reading the papers that day, as they chose to ignore Vertonghen, who eventually went to Spurs for a mere €12m. Since then, Vertonghen has been a star at Tottenham, arguably their second-best player after Real Madrid target Gareth Bale and making the PFA Team of the Year.
So here we are: August 2013, with few, if any, viable center-back options left on the table. Luiz and Agger are both decent players, but very expensive ones, as neither Chelsea nor Liverpool want to sell, and both clubs have a shortage of quality defenders. Moreover, their backups, should Catalan media be believed, reveal the poverty of Barca’s existing scouting system. Jan Vertonghen, Vincent Kompany, Thomas Vermaelen, and Laurent Koscielny have all been mentioned; they are all Premier League players, all impossible to obtain or hugely overpriced. Rosell’s board has made an extraordinary amount of mistakes over the past five years to allow the defensive situation to come to this point, and we should all recognize that. But I firmly believe that past mistakes should not be atoned for with new mistakes.
In my opinion, if the €45m Barca could spend in the next few weeks on David Luiz were invested instead in a top-class defender at non-extortionate prices – like Garay, whose contract will be nearly up, or Mangala, once Porto are more willing to sell – a promising teenager like Tiago Casasola, and a Xavi replacement in Atletico’s 18-year-old genius, Oliver Torres, Barca will have taken the first steps towards atoning for their past mistakes in the transfer market.
